Capacitive buttons: does this happen to you? - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Sometimes, my capacitive buttons are not really responding, even if I press them they won't do anything. This doesn't always happen and it's not a software issue either, as I encountered this problem on other ROMs too.
I think I might have an idea of what's going on, but I need to confirm something.
You know how you warm your hands during winter by blowing hot air with your mouth in your hands? If I warm the capacitive buttons the same way, they are activated. Does this only happen to me or can you recreate this thing as well?
TL;DR: Warm your capacitive buttons with your mouth by exhaling hot air on them and tell me what happens. Between "warm-ups", clean them so there's no steam on them.

C'mon buddies, it's really easy to test this one out.

Sometimes they will activate when breathed upon. Other times, it seems the opposite, the moisture prevents my touches from activating the button for a short time.
I've had similar happen with the fingerprint sensor. After I've been holding a beer glass with condensation on it, and try to press the home/fingerprint button, it won't even register it was touched. I need to wipe the moisture off, for the button to work properly.

Tried it, does nothing. Breath alone won't trigger the keys on my 3t no matter how much I breath on them.

You kinda have to be really close. Like nearly having the buttons in your mouth )

Tactile feedback of power button...

Hello,
I don't know if it is common to the diamond, that the power-button gives nearly no tactile feedback by pressing it, perhaps its only with few devices.
When I'am pressing the button I'am only aware to have done it correctly, when the device gets on or off. The button is built relatively deep into the housing of the phone, so I have often press it twice.
Even If I press it gently with the fingernail to feel slightes response, I it is very hard to recognize the point where the microswitch is activated.
Is this a normal issue?
Kind Regards:
Token42
i suffer from no such issue, i think yours is borked

Thanks for feedback. Currently the button works for me, appart from beeing not suh responsive - so I keep the device until it gets wors.
If I press the button in the middle with my nail there is a minimal "click-feeling" , so the switch seems not completely broken, curriosely there is a little more tactile feedback, when I release it.
how long have you had it ?
I know at t-mobile if develops a fault within the first 28 days youre entitled to an exchange. If youve had it under a month it may be worth just changing it before a 28 day exchange turns into a 2 week repair.
Mine has the same thing too. It really isn't a big issue but it does get annoying at times.
Mine reacts the same way, as I think it has been designed into the device as a "feature"......in other words: have to actively press it to make it work, so that it cannot be turned on by accident (hence why it is mostly recessed)
I don't think your device is broken....suspect if you return it, you will get one with exactly the same feature
Many thanks for your comments!
I feel much better now, since I know others have the same issue and it has not be a fault on my device.
Even it where faulty, I could live with it, cause it works all in all, but I think it would be much better to have a decent tactile feedbak on the power-switch.
Perhaps the power-button is a solid peace of hardware, but often when I press it I think something like "how long will it take, till does not work anymore" - but this is only a psychological issue, perhaps.
Many regards!
the button should project just enough to feel it with your fingers
the earlier htc touch had a recessed power button which was a bit difficult to press....so the one on the diamond is relatively easier to press coz it projects out of the body
also, how ur holding the device whilst pressing the power button also makes a difference!

[Q] Power button issues

So, i was using xperia z for 2.5 weeks and everything was great so far.
But four or five days ago i noticed that power button changed the way it presses. Now, if i havent turn the screen on for some time, the button makes a little crunch when it is touched. This effect repeats in lighter way on the secong press of the button, and there is no such issue if button is in constant use. But the problem appears again, if device has not been used for an hour or more.
And the proccess of pressing is sort of going in two stages: in the beginning goes the crunch (the feeling is like the button scratches something with some resistanse. There is also a little dangle of the button while unpressed), next the gap ends, button touches its membrane smoothly and silently. Sure, the issue is not really unbearable, but it does concern me as it is the only big problem i experienced on my device.
So, should i wait for issue to disappear itself, is it possible to make any steps to improve the situation on my own or is it better to visit service centre at once?
I forgot to mention this: device has been used gently and carefully, it has never fell down, it has never been used or carried in conditions that could possibly make damage to button, neither sand nor dirt could penetrate button's mechanism and so on.
Get a replacement to be honest I wouldn't want water getting in. Sounds like the button has loosened or something.
This has happened to people with game controllers with the Wii, ps3 Xbox etc

The problem has surprisingly disappeared today. There is still a little gap, but annoying sounds went away and the pressing of button feels just fine.
I guess i'll immediately visit service center if the issue will happen again, though.

[FIXED]: Phone Laying Flat, HOME/BACK are Non-Responsive

So you've played with changing button sensitivity, heard about perhaps removing the screen protector, but still don't get it?
I think I might.
Try this, let me know if you guys can confirm, then perhaps we need to send info to HTC?
Unlock your screen
Place your phone on a level surface so its curved back can rock back and forth.
Enter the app drawer, so pressing HOME will actually do something.
As gently as you can, steady the phone with one hand, and touch HOME (It should work)
Now, re-enter the app drawer and press quickly on your phone's HOME key. This will cause it to quickly rock back and forth a bit and shake.
Press the home key all you want, it shouldn't work... especially the more you bang on it.
Wait 10 seconds.
Steady your phone again, press HOME gently. It should work.
The theory? Something is programmed in the phone that if it detects rapid shaking, like maybe in a pocket or being handed back and forth during watching a video... to turn off the buttons to prevent undesired actions. BUT, the curved back of the phone naturally lets this motion occur so it's triggering when it shouldn't.
If you're particularly twitchy, maybe that can cause it from time to time while even in hand too?
SOLUTION:
Run calibration tool a few times until the symptom goes away. Try alternating between pressing more firmly or more softly to make a difference. Take care to center your fingers on the letters.
If you experience bad button behavior while phone is on a flat surface, re-calibrate:
SETTINGS->Language and Keyboard->HTC Sense Input->Advanced->Run Calibration Tool
I couldn't replicate this problem. The home button works as intended while being rocked. I also haven't found to have any button response issues that some encountered.

Heh, come on man... the phone has BOOM Sound, it was meant to be rocked, no?!
Serious note though... yeah always have thought the buttons worked fine too and thought other people were crazy...
I lay it flat though casually press them, they go away and don't come back.
Also couldn't replicate it. Basically the home/back buttons work when they want to, which apparenlty is about 95% of the time. The other 5% is just purified annoyingness.
Allegedly HTC has fixed the button problem in 1.29.XXX.12 which so far has only rolled out to unbranded phones in Europe and Asia. However if you have the international phone you can install the newest Android Revolution ROM which is based on the .12 software. Everyone who has .12 seems to agree that the button sensitivity issue is gone.
Re-ran calibration tool pressing normally and it seems to have fixed it.
No amount of shaking or rapid pressing causes the phone to miss a button press.
This is with US Version of phone w/ screen protector.
If you experience bad button behavior while phone is on a flat surface, re-calibrate:
SETTINGS->Language and Keyboard->HTC Sense Input->Advanced->Run Calibration Tool

Capacitive button worries

So on Monday I went out and got a shiny new Turbo. I'm loving it so far and hoping for root and or bootloader unlock eventually. This morning though something odd happened. For a period of about ten seconds my capacitive buttons quit working completely - no vibrate when I touched them, no nothing. The phone wasn't frozen or anything. Then they suddenly started working again. About five minutes later it did it again, but it hasn't done it since. Should I be worried? What should I do?
I'm having the exact same issue, seems to be random.
Ok I have the Moto Maxx and noticed that too... then I figured that in my case it happened because I was touching the screen with my palm while tying to reach for the capacitive buttons. The buttons stop working while you are touching the screen. Check if that is what is happening to you.

I've even had it do that if there is any liquid on the screen...like maybe a few small drops of water after you just washed your hands or something like that.
Does the proximity sensor disable the buttons? Thinking that if the phone thinks it is near your face for a call, it might shut off the screen and buttons to prevent accidental presses.

They will automatically dim and turn off when in a well lit area/room. If you are in a dark environment they will always be on.
Just hold the device under a lamp and watch buttons dim slowly off. Turn lamp off or go to a dark room and watch them illuminate back to life after 8-10 seconds.
Pretty standard, however, if they are going on and off constantly in the dark, than most likely a defective unit.

I'm pretty sure this is what happened to me, after playing around with it I noticed my phone does the same thing. That's a load off my chest, I was a bit worried about it. thanks!
Screen pinning vs Long press for menu
Just a note, I recently discovered that if you have lollipop screen pinning enabled under the security settings and also the "Use long press for menu" setting enabled under display settings, they seem to conflict and cause all kinds of key lag with any of the capacitive keys. Must be because both utilize a long press of the recents/overview key. As long as you only enable one or the other it should be fine. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
I have had this problem too, it simply has to do with the fact that the screen is and capacitive keys are combined. You can use one or other, but not both. If you encounter this, just mess around on the screen for a few seconds and the keys should work again.
Clear cache. That usually fixed the problem for me.

Anyone else hitting the middle button sometimes when they bend their hand?

Doesn't matter on the placement too much as sometimes my watch will reset because I bent my hand and it hit and held the middle button causing it restart. Is there something I can fill in the space with to stop the button from pushing down? Maybe a very tiny elastic band?
Or you can wear it on your right hand?
Go to a watch shop, most new watches come with the crown held out with a small plastic disc. Maybe one of these might fit.

You must be double jointed or something, I tried to bend my wrist a half a
dozen times as hard as I could and even slid the watch as close as I could
to my wrist trying to intentionally press the button but I could not do it.
Good luck!
Have a great day!
I have done it twice in a week.
Happens to me all the time, also beware the button is easily broken as I have learnt. The watch fell while putting it on and landed on the button and it no longer works

Happens to me Several Times a Day,, many times it will reboot,, if i try to attach my watch higher than the wrist bones my shirt or jacket will cover the watch face and i will have to use my other hand to expose the face,, very annoying when all you want to do is Glance at the Watch face for the time or messages that just came through,,, By the Way Switching to my Right Hand Does Solve the Issue of Accidentally Pressing the Button But Very Annoying and Makes it Extremely difficult to press the Buttons with my left hand
This was one of the most frustrating things I ran into with my ZW3, as it happened all the time. However, there is a fairly easy solution. Flip it around so that the buttons are on the opposite side, then run Set Orientation to force the screen to match. Problem solved.
If you are comfy setting up your phone as an ADB bridge, you can upload the APK on the fly. Otherwise, you will need to plug it into a PC and upload over ADB the ordinary way. However, getting the Set Orientation app on the watch is the hardest part of the whole deal.
