Does anyone know if it is possible to get google apps back on the latest update? otherwise how do you downgrade back to a version that can?
* Update
I followed the steps in the thread below, this gives you root and gives you back google apps. This works to bring you from any OS version as of 8/23/17 and brings you to 2.0.807 with google apps.

Can not update from 4.0 to 4.1.0
Any hint?
Because it's a custom ROM. Maps have been tampered with so that Nav can work outside the US. So the upgrade cannot authenticate the version you currently use and make the install fail.
Just installed "3pei's DroidSense v0.2" on my magic.

I could install google maps 4.0.1 without any problem.
I managed to download it and install it on SuperHero v1.5. You just need to uninstall the old Google maps and download the new one. If you don't after the download it will fail at installation.
i download and install ok on my mytouch 3g. It's work Great.
there is 4.1.0 available in Market (europe) today with line in changelog

Installation fail
hi,
I tried to install directly with google maps 4.0.0 and failure has given me (I have version RAv1.6.3G)
I tried to uninstall google maps but only lets me remove the updates, not the application. Even so I tried to download version 4.1.0 of the Market but fail.
Does anyone have a link to the Google Maps 4.1.0 apk unsigned?
thanks!
remove google apps with ADB - search
thanks dk75,
I can finally uninstall google maps, so I can install the latest version of the market.
now the problem is that, being the original version, I no longer have the option to "navigate".
I'll wait to see if they have the unlocked version soon.
thanks.
what is strange Google did two 4.1.0 realases in 2 day - 4124 and 4126 and booth is called 4.1.0 in Market but when in notification 4126 was called 4.2.0 and that version did reboot to my phone durring update (and it was report earlier that it do that at the forum)
So again Google couldn't provide proper realase for it's application - lame.
The rebooting happened to me too. I also wondered about there being an update from 4.1.0 to 4.1.0.
Didn't notice about the 4124 and 4126 though.
What's the difference between both and how do you properly install the 4126?
Brut's 4.1.0 version is available now:

I bought this for my mom and I was wondering if the tablet did regular updates, would it lose google play? What would an OTA take out other than root?
I'm currently on 5.1.1(got mine the day the update was released and updated without knowing) and I was able to install google play and services and haven't had any problems with either. As far as OTA updates, I doubt it will prevent it from working but can't say for sure because we don't know what Amazon will do.

Others have mentioned that the Amazon updates are full images, so I would speculate that if you had root and installed to system it would probably be wiped out. If you used the script, it just installs like a regular app and should be retained through an OTA like all the other apps. That's not to say that an OS change couldn't cause the frameworks or app to crash\stop functioning.
Didn't some others say they couldn't install Play store completely on 5.1.1 ?

The current update may not break google play but at any time in the future a update may come out that does indeed break it. Why risk it? Just disable OTA.
It seems a bunch of people got screwed because they failed to kill OTA & got hit by 5.1.1. It's just foolish to leave OTA enabled. You can always apply a new update manually or even temporarily re-enable OTA if a new update proves safe & you want it.

This. Completely automatic updates are for the elderly that have to call their children to be reminded how to cut/paste in Excel.

The Google Play script from 5.0.1 works just the same in 5.1.1 without issue.
Mine is unrooted, and still on 5.0.1.
I want to root, maybe install a ROM that is well maintained, but definitely want to prevent OTA updates, use Nova launcher, gapps, and be able to install from Google play store, and apk.
What's my best course as of now?

Above all, keep wifi off until you're rooted, updated and OTA is blocked.
I suggest: (1) use RootJunky's script and the option for rooting 5.0.1 and then (2) go here to update the OS and install Gapps and block OTA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/howto-install-fireos-5-1-1-root-gapps-t3265594 This lets you keep the 5.0.1 bootloaders so you can load TWRP under OS 5.1.1 or 5.1.2. You can then use RootJunky script to install Nova.
Take the time to read this link before you do anything, it will provide you all your answers including how to go back to stock if needed.

Im looking to switch back to android from the abomination that the iphone is and was wondering if its possible to downgrade google play servies on the note to 12.8.74 or below? Or is it too new of a phone and it cant be done?
The only way i can think of off the top of my head would be to make an ADB and use the command to delete google play off of your device (assuming you're not rooted), download and install the version of the google play store that you need and make sure you don't let it auto update? Other than that i don't know any other way to get it off your device to be able to download and revert to an earlier version.
Why do you want to downgrade it?

Probably because the new changes look terrible.
I am currently on latest stock rom WW 17.0240.2009.49. I recently uninstalled some apps which are pre-installed from stock rom, such as Netflix... etc. However I didn't take any backup. In this case, how can I get those apps back? I know Netflix can be downloaded from play store, but some other apps are not available from there such as font apps as I remember.
I try to downloaded latest full WW firmware 2.28GB and placed in internal storage, rename it to UL-ASUS_I001_1-ASUS-17.0240.2009.50-1.1.225-user.zip (49 to 50). After reboot, system can detect new firmware and run the update. After second reboot, it report update failure.
In this case, is there any other way to get back pre-installed apps? Or do I need to wait for new official firmware later from Asus? I don't want to flash RAW firmware because I don't want to lost all data. Thanks!
