Which Gear VR fits the Note 8? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Accessories

I noticed when I ordered my Note 8 that there was a link for a new Gear VR Note 8 Edition. Does this mean that the prior versions will not work? I've seen posts where some users state that the 2017 edition fits the S8+, but am not sure if it will fit the Note 8.

On launch day it was said a brand new Gear VR is coming out that will fit the Note 8, the current version will not work with the Note 8.

That makes no sense. Why does samsung keep on doing that.
They know there going to make another phone they should think ahead and make a bigger adjuster for different size phones.
I got one in all the promos and had one for each different phone. Ended ip selling them all off and just keeping the s8 one

I pre-ordered the new vr with my phone order on samsung for $20 off

there is a new model on the sammy site for the note8. i have an employee discount so i picked it up. looking forward to it and the free 360 camera...

No one is going to disagree.
I think the launch product design wasn't finalized until after the launch of the s8+
I am racking up those friggen VRs as well.

So I get the Samsung Gear 360 VR Camera on promotion with the Note8, but I can't watch VR videos that I make with it on my current Samsung VR Headset that I got with the S8+. Would've been nice to offer the new VR Headset that fits the Note8 as one of the new promotion options.

I wonder if it will be possible to mod the S8/S8+ one to fit. Otherwise I guess I'll see if they offer a % off coupon for accessories like they have with previous S and Note models.

Thats what I am thinking, should not be too much to mod but might be off center since one side is the plug and can not be adjusted. I don't know if I will do another VR unless we get really good deals. I have 3 VR's sitting here collecting dust now. I can't believe they did not plan for device adjustments for the note 8.

I just got off of a chat with Prasanna N. at Samsung Technical Support who said that they will have a port/adapter of some kind that will allow the Note8 to work with the previous model of the Gear VR. So maybe we'll be ok and not have to buy the Gear VR Note8 Edition.

Planned obsolescence.

The Note 8 version will be my first...never got to try the previous ones.

It's a tight fit, but, you shouldn't have to do any modifications to the older VR Gear:
FF To about the 12:30 mark
https://youtu.be/wvhWHvyppfg

The Note8 fits in the most recent Gear VR headset. No modifications are required. I have a very difficult time understanding why anyone has had difficulty with this.

Does not fit in the one I bought a month ago. The note8 will not sit flush on the snap in end.
And the text on vr boot up is not centered.

Daydream fits and is compatible day 1. Works great!

Note 4 or Note Edge

I'm just wondering which one are you all going to get... I'm going back and forth on which one to get... I mean the N4 will be great but that Edge looks nice and "the next big thing", but I'm hoping it's not just a gimmick... Also I'm wondering about development for the Edge... Since you all are experts here on XDA, your opinions are worth something... Thanks in advanced...

I'm left handed so Note 4 for me. Even if I was right-handed, I'd probably wait a gen to see what Samsung and devs can do with the Edge. The fact that it's supposed to significantly more expensive than the 4 (which is already $750-$820 off contract) helps with my decision as well.
The cost was originally stopping me from going with the edge. Just watched this hands on video a little while ago and I didn't like the looks of it.

I'd love to see a taskbar with all open apps on it kind of like a desktop computer. If they had that option out of the gate I might consider it, might be convenient. I know the N4 has the running programs soft button, but it's still nice to see all your apps on a taskbar. I'm torn, but I'll probably play it safe and grab the vanilla N4.
Note 4 for me. Some dev will probably port the the note Edge rom for the 4. That be the best of both worlds.
Love the Edge. But price and release date are evasive and will likely be prohibitive.
Dynamic notifications kinda kills the coolest part. However moving menu items and shortcuts to it can be such a Time saver.
The Edge is expected to be $1,000 for the 32GB model and per Samsung's presentation, the curve display is part of their "ecosystem" strategy along with the watch. I take that as, you need to use Wiz and the curve display is proprietary.
Seems the Edge might be the antithesis of a device for the XDA forum.
Note 4 for me cause I need me the Gear VR.
I just read on PA that the edge will start out in limited production this year.

No one is even mentioning any information about preordering the edge, I guess it comes out really late this year. Since i can't do VR, I am not interested in the edge. I don't think this device will be very popular.
Isn't the "edge" just a piece of the regular screen real estate wrapped around the edge? That is, we really aren't gaining any screen real-estate?

You actually lose .1" of real estate.
This could be the reason why there hasnt been any mention about preordering the Note Edge
Samsungs own president said the Edge is a concept phone and not intended for mass production. That equals very rare and very expensive.
The other thing I read about it is that it is shorter than the Note 4, but wider. I have a Note 3, and I have trouble reaching from one side to the other with my thumb (I play Ingress, so this happens often). If I ended up with a phone even a milimeter or 2 wider, it would be impossible -- and I've got large hands.
I think it is a novel concept, and I hope it sells enough to warrant a second generation. But I also hope they make something useful and usable as the second edition.

Got my s6 vr. First impression.

Ok so I own a Galaxy S6 Edge and I got my Gear VR from best buy and my brother shipped it to Dubai from US. Costed me alot more than you folks living in states. Original price is 199$. I used my friend's Gear VR for note 4 with it for first time too so i can also kinda tell the difference... Ok so my impressions are,
1- The picture quality is better than Note 4. Well way better to be honest. In note 4 the pixelization is alot more than the s6 version due to the higher resolution the s6 has. The movies in s6 VR I think is above 480, kinda similar to 720p if not exactly.
2- Build quality is superb. It is lighter as compared to the note 4 vr.
3- Watched movie for 2hrs straight, no heat issues too, maybe because of the built-in fan? Did not hear the fan running though. But phone was not as heated as I heard it would be. Room was normal temperature. AC was not on my face directly.
4- No fog at all whatsoever.
5- Plugged in the charger, with samsung fast charger and samsung original cable, battery was exactly the same when the movie started till the end, 2 hrs of use. It does not charge the phone but does not let it drain also.
6- Note 4 has a better FOV. In s6 vr the side of the screen has noticeable walls. This is one downgrade in my thoughts but you will be lost in the details and movie that it might not bother you like it did not to me.
Overall I think it is a huge improvement as compared to the N4 VR but just the FOV is not. But seriously that can be forgotten easily once youre in and all set.
Great review. I have been thinking for a while to jump into S6 since I don't like the lag existing in Note 4 system.
Now with this review for the VR. Might have made the decision easier.

$99 Gear Vr and Note 4

Hello. I've been trying to find myself out but no luck. What happens if you cram an "old" Galaxy Note 4 into the new Gear Vr? I've already installed the Oculus App inside. Will it say that it's not compatible with the device? Or will it work just fine? Or might need a some sort of patch to make it work with my Note 4?
Thanks in advance

Im wondering the same, especially now that I've flashed my Note 4 with a Note 5 port and the model number actually says SM-N920C.
Just finished reading amazon reviews and people are saying that the Note 4 doesn't fit! Most of us Note 4 users expected a software limitation that could be fixed with rooting or spoofing, but a hardware size issue would be a huge disappointment. I contemplated buying this VR consumer headset knowing it's not going to be compatible with the expectation of making some modifications to get it to work, but if it doesn't fit that's ridiculous! Hopefully someone shares photos or videos of their problems, and maybe we can find a workaround.

Since the announcement of the consumer Gear VR it was clear that the Note 4 will not fit in it.
There is also a visible trend that new content is sometimes unsupported by the Note 4 (mostly because of the Snapdragon variant out there which somehow causes trouble to utilize the performance needed without overheating problems).
The Note 4 version is now over a year old and in my humble opinion it is/was a developer device but to get more testers on board it was called "innovator edition".
Porn still works. Thats all I care about. Can't wait untill my fleshlight arrives from Santa , oh ya!

I read the specs and the Note 4 and 5 have the same micro usb connector. Is this correct? So what's keeping a Note 4 from being hacked to work with New Gear VR?

I talked to a Samsung/Bestbuy Rep who witnessed the Note 4 fit into the new VR. Said it doesn't fit perfect and didn't advise it , but it does fit.
That's somewhat good news. Now someone needs to confirm that the software works. I am surprised a Note 4 xda developer has answered this question yet.

Dn5 for the n910c works perfectly with the note4 vr innovator edition. You need to install the oculus apps using n4 buildprop but after that you can swap back to n5 buildprop. I don't know much about the snapdragon variants but if you want to know anything about the exynos n4 and gear vr just hit me up

I'd also like to know what people mean when they say it 'doesn't fit'. I am interested in getting a VR device, but the Innovator Edition is ridiculously expensive for some reason. Can you squeeze it in? Or does it really not fit. Maybe I'll head to a Best Buy and jam my Note 4 in the Consumer Edition to see for myself.
Better to ask forgiveness than permission.
Edit: I found the Innovator Edition for the Note 4 certified refurbished at Amazon for $150 and made a separate thread.

Even if it didn't fit.. why couldn't you use rubber bands or something to strap it to the VR as a rudimentary workaround? Or maybe even take part of the VR's plastic off.
I was going to buy one to test myself. From what I understand, you can make it fit. With root , you can fake it to think it's what ever device you want it to be.
The problem will be overheating and under power, and screen resolution. But Samsung really screwed themselves with this non removable battery deal..

If you do buy the newer version, let us know what the issue with the fit is. If it's something that can be remedied by modifying the back cover or removing it, I might return the Innovator Edition I just bought and get the Consumer Edition.

I was just given one of these as a gift. Love it! The new version has a power port so you don't drain the battery. Instead of separate cartridges for each phone all of the devices fit into one set up using Springs and spacers. I'm running this with my note 5 and couldn't be happier.

How snug is the fit of the Note 5 in terms of it's width? The Note 4 is only a few milimeters smaller in terms of width, but I bet that could be the difference between wedging it in and not getting it in at all.

Since it is the largest device this was designed for; the fit is very snug. You would have issues with the corners if you tried to fit a note 4 into this. Your best bet would be a refurbished innovator edition.

Is it worth jumping to the s7

Do you think think its worth jumping to the s7 from the s6? what are your guys thought?
I'm thinking about it. I'm interested in the bigger battery, the IP67, and the return of the SD card.. Th IP67 is a big one for me.
However I'm also really interested in never spending that kind of money for a dang phone again, so there's that. I really like the Mi5 if we can ever get it, and I'd like to see Moto's next gen stuff. I almost went X pure instead of S6, but I didn't want that big of a phone.
It is a personal decision for sure but I have been on the Galaxy line since S3 and all of them right up to my current S6 have been rooted and absolute work horses with each subsequent phone being that much better.
Can someone explain to me how jump actually works? I have an s6 edge. If I trade it in for an s7 edge do they credit me something for my device? I put 200 down and paid another 200 towards the balance. I just don't want to be out 400 bucks only to start over.

can you send it to me as well. im in the same delimma, im already over 200 in and i dont want to start over on another phone. im also on Jump 1. you think its better to stay on it or go to on demand?
I think liquid cooling may be enough for me to jump on the band wagon. I also like the ip68 water resistant protection. As far as liquid cooling goes I find my s6 is to sluggish when temperature throttling kicks in. This is a huge flaw imo. It heats up too quickly especially since I am a multitasker. Also the gear vr is almost unusable because it turns into a pancake griddle after 10 min of use. This time I am going to see if the s7 will be a better fit.

Jump on demand doc:

I'm really torn about upgrading to the s7 myself. Unfortunately, I opted out of the Jump program when I got my s6, so I'd have to sell my phone myself and can't trade it in.
Sammy's made all the right improvements in the s7.
It's very tempting for me but the removal of the ir blaster closed the deal for me :/
Honestly once we get mm on the s6 most of my quirks with the s6 will be gone and I'll be a happy customer once more. I might even try to put a s7 battery in my s6.
Sent from my SM-G920T using Tapatalk
Honestly, I am going to wait for like 3-4 months until after the s7 has been released. This way I can see if there is support for great custom ROMs like XtreStoLite or XtraLite as well as kernels like arter97. I wouldn't be able to bring myself to get a brand new phone without root, have to deal with bloat, and can't customize it with ROMs for months to come. Also, it's generally a good idea to get the newer devices a few months after launch so that many of the bugs can be ironed out. I prefer to have a flawless and bugless experience when upgrading phones!
I pre-ordered... A few reasons why...
1: I'm on Jump on Demand and have 3 trades left in 8 months
2: The preorder extras (GEAR VR and year of netflix)
3: The IP68 and memory card reader
Those are my main reasons for switching... mainly the Jump on demand, the rest is just extras on top

It depends on which Jump version you are on. Theres V1, V2, and On Demand.
V1 is every 6 months you can trade it in, regardless of what you owe. They'll pay off the balance on your EIP.
V2 is every 12 months, and you have to have 50% of your phone paid off. They'll pay whatever is left of your EIP after that initial 50%.
On demand is the lease program. You can trade it in up to 3 times in any 18 month period. You don't technically own the phone so the whole EIP thing doesn't exist.
edit: just learned no IR on the S7.. Dangit Samsung, you've always got to screw up at least 1 thing!

There are different ones? I thought they were the same. Anyway, yes it will fit. Side by side the S6 and S7 are the same size. The volume buttons are slightly lower by a few millimeters but that's it aside from the beveled edges and other very minor changes. I tried it in my S6 case and it fits (not as snug but it would work if I were in a dire need). I'll be picking up my VR's at the store tonight so I'll try my S6 in them... before I leave the store since I have to hand over the "old" phone.
I've loaded this phone with every benchmark app I can think of and it's coming out with double the marks of the S6. 3DMark running the Slingshot ES 3.1 test got 2555. The S6 gets around 1220. I'm at work so I can't type everything, plus this isn't my thread. That said, I assume you know to take benchmarks with a grain of salt. Even so having double the numbers speaks to the S7's capability on paper and under real stress. I'm done with my tangent now :silly:

I think the tradeoff is having the ability to save photos in RAW

It does. The S7 is nearly identical in size and dimensions to the S6. I played with one at Costco and was surprised at how identical it was. The only difference was the color. Fortunately I had my Gear VR in my bag (was letting coworkers test drive it that day) and was able to plug it in. Fits exactly like my current S6 edge. It prompted to download the software so I ejected it but it does work and fit.

From someone that has theirs, it's well worth it. Of course this is all personal opinion.

What did you get? the flat or the edge? after playing around with it for a while, is there any major difference that you notice or its essentially the same with some added features?
i got the 128 gb s6 so i dont really know if it worth change to a 32 gb with a micro sd.
one thing that annoys me about my phone is the texting. I have a lot of texts or if i text fast, theres lag on it and not fluid. you guys experience the same? any other texting apps that are better then stock?

Getting Note 8 Today...Anything I should be aware of or change?

I am finally leaving my Nexus 6P for the Note 8. My phone went dead while on a call and I still had 30% battery left. Google said they would give me a refurb 6p but it's a 2 year old phone...time to upgrade. I took advantage the $250 off deal from Best Buy and the Verizon payment plan...
Anything I should be aware of or settings I should tweak right away? I haven't had a Samsung phone since the Note 4 (I had the Note 2 before that)...Is Touchwiz any better than it was with earlier phones? I watched several reviews and it looks so much better then I remember...
Thanks!!!
Save yourself the time and hassle.. get a whitestone dome tempered glass screen protector.. it's worth it.

Personally I've never used a screen protector on any of my smartphones dating back to the T-Mobile G1 and I'm presently on my 19th. Never had a scratch or an issue with any of the screens. There are some new things for Samsung now, you can use Substratum with out root, you will need the Sungsratum add on too. There is also a thread on layers where you can get dark notifications and change the ugly Samsung nav bar icons. And get a good case, it's an expensive phone to replace if you drop it.
Keep your receipt ( jk ).

Get used to poor sounding speakers especially noticeable coming from 6p and tw which is not great.
Other then that great phone
Touchwiz isn't the monstrosity it use to be, it's actually enjoyable since the S7, it manages resources well. I only get 2% drain. Overnight. Your going to probably love the note 8. Battery life is really impressive and I came from a s8+

Many do for receiving calls, ringtones, notifications, YouTube and speaker calls.
Look I'm being quite picky perhaps because I've been using iphone 8 plus and HTC u11 my expectations for a flagship phone.

Yes. $45 for the only glass screen protector worth getting on this phone. Take a look at what it actually is.

Not to be a jerk but the reviews are not that great. I would just take my chances with a $8 film. Did I look up the wrong product?

I've used it. works fine. look at what kind of product it is and the installation process. You're bound to get people complaining because they couldn't do it right. You could argue it's whitestone's job to make the application process as foolproof as possible, but ultimately, they have a product that works, and an installation process that works. So many of those ratings aren't ratings against the utility and functionality of the product, it's ratings against their inability to apply it for whatever reason.

Keep in mind that they changed the installation process like 2 or 3 times since it first came out so a good number of those reviews were people who were using the early versions of the product.

Ah OK that makes more sense. I just picked up a Note 8 yesterday so I'm new to the scene here.
Thanks for all the tips everyone! I am LOVING this phone! I never realized how slow my Nexus 6P has become until I tried the Note 8!!! The speaker worked just fine on speaker phone, the fingerprint/face/Iris scanners all work flawlessly. I ordered a case and the flat wireless charger for my nightstand and plan on ordering the wireless fast charging charger on Friday...
Any other tips...settings to tweak, cases that work well., accessories that are useful?
Thanks again!!
you have to check the respective forums/threads for all that type of info man..plenty of stuff out there, but this isnt the thread to discuss all those various topics..

You just left the last of the grown up phones from Google. Now they make phones for kids. Pixel? What were they thinking? Anyways the Note8 is a great phone. The best phone I have ever had. My 2nd favorite phone was my Nexus 6. That was the first phone that I actually kept for the full 2 years and never got tired of. You will like the Note8 it's a great phone. Guess we can hope that Google will bring back the Nexus line.

This IS the Questions & Answers forum right? Why not have ONE topic with everything in it...
I agree with you Jason; I still have my Nexus 6, and it still works just fine, but this Note 8 is really something..
I've had many Sammy phones over the years, but didnt care for them much recently; now that touch jizz is easily bypassed, and there is more than enough power in the Note 8 for doing all sorts of stuff, this is the premier phone out right now..sure, it would be nice if the bootloader was unlocked on the snapdragon model, but frankly, I couldnt care less about rooting it right now, since it works so well right out of the box..
Really? I find the battery life on this terrible compared to S8+
