Couldn't find any way to change the background color when writing with the S Pen Note app. On my Note 5 (and on my old Note 2) you could change the background color in the Note taking app so you weren't always writing on a white screen. For instance you could choose from a yellow legal pad background or any other color background. I always take notes in meetings and conferences using the white color ink on a black background. The black background is less distracting for others in the room and something I have grown to rely on. Does anyone know if Samsung has done away with S Pen background options in the Note 8 or if we're stuck with our new S Pen writing on that blaring white screen?

I know the Note 7 Version Had it.
The store demo are on beta software. So im sure once we get them, we will be able to change it.
Would seem a bit dumb if they remove that in the finally build.

Got the T-Mobile variant and coming from Note II.
When I have multiple apps that can open a item, I would get a prompt. With my Note II, I could then specify to open it one time or always.
With my Note5, the prompt doesn't give me that option. I do get the option to select the application. I click the icon and then a get a popup reminding me how to clear the defaults.
But, I didn't want to set that application as the default. I still want to be prompted for selecting the app to open.
Is this new? Any workarounds?

yeah, this setting sucks. i don't always wanna open a file in the same program so i leave no default on certain file types.
Is there a way around this without root?

I've noticed that when I open filed via ES File Explorer, it still gives me the option.
Most other things it doesn't. I agree, its pretty annoying. Like attaching that photo to Tapatalk....

I've got the same thing going on over here, very odd indeed. The GS6 doesn't do this to me.

To be clear, Google does give you the option. The behavior you see is a change samsung introduced in the latest version of TouchWiz.

I've for the same thing going on here, except that when I press an app (eg Chrome) it automatically opens it in chrome afterwards, no option to reselect unless I dive into app settings). Still very dumb. A far cry though from the annoying dialog box in old TouchWiz. The one that reminded you how to clear defaults. Every. Single. Time.
Yeah, I didn't like the old dialog AT ALL, it asked and asked and asked... I don't see why samsung changed it from the default at all, but oh well.

I agree. Some things I made permanent but certain thing I liked to open differently from time to time.

I thought this odd as well and thought maybe there was a simple fix.. I Google'd terms such as default apps for note 5 etc and noticed a ton of people complaining about other phones and how every time it asked them what app to open and that it was confusing and they didn't understand why it kept asking them. I wonder if samsung thought that by taking the choice away it would make the software easier to navigate.. they should have made it an option to select one time only, even if they hid it somewhere in settings. So far the better open app linked above has brought this function back and I barely notice it's not stock.

This app works great for the note 5. Doesn't work for all situations, but does for most. Not sure why sammy would remove the choice to pick to open once or always with the app. I guess they are trying to simplify things, at the cost of functionality. At least with this app you can get most of that functionality back.
This has been driving me crazy...especially since the functionality is still present on the galaxy tab s2 running 5.1.1. I tried better open with and it didn't seem to work for me. Maybe I'm using it wrong? Any tips on the app?

Hello all this is my first thread so I hope you can be patient with me
I was wondering if anyone has noticed that there are a few functions missing in the S note app in the note 5 , that was present in the note 4 particularly the photo note "convert to edit" function ( where I can convert an image to digital art drawing ) , from what I heard from Samsung support staff that this "convert to edit" function have been removed from the note 5 and I wonder if there is any way that i can get this function back into my note 5 . Thanks guys

I never had the note 4 but I know you can draw and edit photos a couple different ways on the note 5.
One is to open a new note in s note, click more button at the top and insert an image and you can edit it.
The other is to go into gallery, open a picture, click on edit and then select 'write'. You get all the s note pens and stuff to edit with.

There is a function of note 4 "CONVERT TO EDIT" who do not have the NOTE5.
You take the picture and can convert into lines to edit.
this function is excellent but unfortunately removed the NOTE5.
Only a developer can maybe return this user function to a custom romm.
I had the galaxy note 4 and used the photo note and then converted to editable lines in s note. But now in note 5 there is no image conversion option in rows. Someone is going through it too?

I have already installed all the extensions the problem is that the function convert to edit photo does not work it just takes a picture and glue. It's the same function insert camera image. This is not photo note. It does not make a school whiteboard in lines of s note. Do you understand now

this feature has been removed! I went to a store to see a NOTE5 and could not use the "CONVERT TO EDIT" the note 4. I'm using the rom erobot port 11 note 5 and also has this function. It would be great if the dev could include this user function in rom there would be best!!
I too am missing the convert to edit on my Note 5. Out of all the features, this is the one I actually used and Samsung removed it from the Note 5 software.

I wish I had seen this before I spent over an hour on a call with Samsung trying to figure this out. Convert to text is definitly missing, so all you end up with is the ability to slice the image into sections of smaller images. Very disappointing.
I bought the note 5 only because the camera set + photo note. If all we open a complaint with Samsung we can force them to fix functionality.

it is easier to ask a developer of xda here to create a solution. using the rom note 4 believe is possible.
Very frustrating and disappointing. Worked so well on ythe Note 4, used it at work all the time for snapping whiteboards. Note 5 less than useful. photo note......not really. Should have renamed it to photo chop. The note functionality is gone.
I found that the app Office Lens works like the former version of photo note. It creates editable text after using it to take a picture.

With Note 5, Photo note feature has been modified to exclude the text conversion.
Photo note will only allow to select particular portions in the picture and insert in S Note. Text present in pictures can not be converted to editable lines in S Note.
But as we said earlier with every new version features are added, modified and removed. Text conversion feature in photo note may be introduced again in future versions of S Note.
We can not confirm if this will really happen but there is always a possibility.

Is the Photo Note app the same app that was on the old Note 2's and Note 3's where you can take a picture and makes notes on the (virtual) back of the photo? I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge now and that would be one of my most desired features! Is Samsung NOT putting it on other phones because there is no S-Pen? A don't think this was meant to see the light of day, and a reckon giving sammys history this isn't the finished article, ps this will not be available via kies etc, most people reckon it's been a error on sammys part releasing it ! We can hope that Samsung will restore its former behaviour of updating the TouchWiz of an old Samsung device into a new and refreshing one, and that happened when the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0(GT-P3100) received the 4.2.2 XEF(French)-Jellybean update as the weather widgets and icons are identical to the Galaxy S4

But the Galaxy Tab 2 had a very lucky situation when it received its 4.2.2 JellyBean update but it's up to Samsung to do it!
I dont know if its fake or not.
But it seems to be fake because cant came so earlier even earlier than S6 or S6 Edge & even Note 5 is still updating

It started by buying new Galaxy S8, before that I had Galaxy J5 2016, and there I had theme called ,,1. High Contrast Theme", but when I moved to my new Sam Gal S8 I was unable to find that theme in theme store.
Unfortunately I have absolutely destroyed my J5 and was unable to download that theme from there.

Samsung themes are not APK files (at least not direct from the theme store)

Samsung themes are not APK files (at least not direct from the theme store)

There's a modded version here also (this is an APK if the link doesn't work for you) but it will require some fiddling to get it to stick

And I don't like that second (High Contrast II)
Because I want the original one from Samsung.

Yes that's it, the other link I posted is pretty much the same APK, just a little updated for the S8 I think...
Both will work with note 8 but you will have to follow the instructions on how to get it to stay applied.
All Samsung themes installed via APK are only trial themes, you have to freeze the trial in order to use the theme permanently.

It started by buying new Galaxy S8, before that I had Galaxy J5 2016, and there I had theme called ,,1. High Contrast Theme", but when I moved to my new Sam Gal S8 I was unable to find that theme in theme store.
Unfortunately I have absolutely destroyed my J5 and was unable to download that theme from there.

I had the same issues with a theme I was using on the S8+, wasn't in the store. Found a FB link for the themer, sent him a FB message and within two days the theme was available for the Note 8.

Thanks but, this theme is developed by Samsung, so there is very small chance that they will add support for my Galaxy S8.

So was the one I contacted them about. sd_black was in the Samsung theme store for the S8+ but not the Note 8. I messaged them and told them I was using it on the S8 and S8+ and would like to use it on the Note 8 and the had it available in the Samsung theme store within 2-3 days. Won't hurt to try.
