Hello guys,
i'm thinking about getting this phone soon, but I have one problem with it : is the screen dimmed with PWM ? It has almost everything I want, but I am really sensitive to flickering, that's why I can only use flicker-free phones, like the Asus Zenphone 2 that has an IPS screen with no PWM. I already searched everywhere, and I can't find any information about it, the only thing I've found is about the Zuk Z2 (non pro version) and it seems like the screen doesn't use PWM, but 5.0" is way too small for me
So if someone knows the answer, or could test it for me, it would be really nice of him/her.
Thanks a lot !

Hi,
my standard test for this is pointing another camera at the screen and check if the pictures flickers - managed to pick out my laptop screen correctly (there are two different versions of the Lenovo X1 Carbon display). I just did the same test to the Zuk Z2 Pro and did not see any flickering. What other test do you normally do to test if a screen uses PWM?
Cheers
rien
According to notebookcheck it flickers but I personally didn't notice that.
I've already got ridden of my device (the stock firmware is unusable and i don't trust the only official one) so I cannot do any tests with it.
Thanks for the fast replies Rien and birdie

Did you change the brightness during the test ? Some phones seems to be flickering only when the brightness is low. Would be great if you could test it while changing the brightness from 100% to 0%

Yes I did, but indeed I'm not so sure any more. When I hold the camera close to the display there is hard to notice some flickering indicating PWM. I don't notice it myself, though with bare eye - but that doesn't mean anything for you.
As for the firmware - I specifically bought this device to be used with alternative firmware and I'm very happy so far.
Maybe if you record it you would see some flickering ? Because sometimes I can't see it just with the camera, I need to take a picture or a video to make it clear. But if there is still nothing , then it means the pwm is just too fast for us to see it, or there's just no pwm at all.

Good idea. I made a video for you, you can watch/download it here: http://www.xup.in/dl,64103604/2017-09-07_08-44-46.mp4/ I don't see any flickering.

Ahh thanks, so the screen doesn't flicker just like you said , or it's too fast to be seen so I should be okay with it anyways
I'll probably get it thanks a lot for the help !
If you don't see PWM effect with your eyes, it doesn't seem that it is safe for your eyes. Eyes see this flickering, but brains make this effect invisible. It damages your eyes so. Read about PWM more please. There is high flickering in z2pro, I've noticed. Did anyone try to fix it with Screen dimming programs?

since so many say that the xperia z comes with different panels i would like to know more about this
my main concern would be black level
when i first started up my xperia z i was shocked by the black level it was not black at all it was just like this
http://i50.tinypic.com/v8ao6.png
i made a thread about it and was told that the black level will improve itself through self callibration?
then i saw this video
skip to 1:03
makes the whole different panels theory more beleivable unless ofcourse that part of the video has no backlight allthough the first part of the video also has a very good black level it looks black it's even and it has no traces of light or white in it
could someone explain this to me
does the screen actually self calibrate after some time as the black level i saw at the sony boot logo was grey as the above picture
i will soon have two of these phones to compare to eachother seeing if their displays are different
i can also see people have found different names of panels in their phone JDI or SHARP which one is the better one?
and interestingly enough the phone i started/had had a very good viewing angle from what i could see i saw it for 2 seconds but i saw no actual changes in the picture from a different angle
WOW that was very apparent. bumping thread for interest, as those black levels were pretty absolute at 1:03
anyone know what that was?

yeah thats what i am wondering about aswell
it also can't be alck of backlight as the picture changes instantly to the homescreen without any change in brightness

Mine boots up the same as that. Grey at first then darker after the xperia logo has wiggled across a couple of times. No idea why though.

so the first sony boot logo animation is surrounded by grey and not black?
i sent a message to sony about this they said this
Hi there. The video provides the information you want...Specially in 1:03 and on. -Francis
i was now told they are the same panels it has been proven
It has being proven (going into the code itself) that the panels are all the same (docomo version and non branded Z) that same forum has the information on this. On the battery life check this endurance test by GSM arena: http://blog.gsmarena.com/sony-xperia-z-battery-test-is-ready-here-come-the-scores/

Hi,
Any of you encountered the Mi 5 screen is bleeding/wash out/overexpose under bright sun? I'm using CM13 2016-09 build.
Is this normal? If it's not, is it ROM or device issue?
Thank you.
Not happen to me on MIUI 8, but generally Mi 5 has sunlight display which should allow you to still clearly see screen content under bright sun. No idea if it can be calibrated from software or only a hardware feature.
Its because ,automatic screen contrast in screen options? Check It
I thought I was the only one that had this happening. I'm not bothered by it, in fact I think it's a great feature. I first noticed it while using MIUI and was mildly surprised when it worked EVEN on Cyanogenmod. So I guess it's a hardware feature.

Hello everyone.. I'm sorry for bad English but try to understand it's important..
I think that Huawei cheated us with p20 pro..
We paid 890 euros for one of the best mobiles in the market and Huawei used second rate display of amoled.. And please tell me did you paid 890 euros for second rate display? I don't think so..
So follow the instructions and you will see what I mean.
Go on a completely dark room, without light at all..
Use brightness 100%
Click the video and turn your phone to watch it on full screen..
W8 for the a little bit and you will see white colours coming out from your screen and tell me..
Is that normal for amoled panel?
No its not.. Black should be completely black...
I took my phone to Huawei fix center and they refuse to see.. They don't recognize it as problem and they refuse to give me my money back..
What do you say?? Check the same with s9 and s9+.
P20 pro user.
no such problem on my device.

I can see what you mean. I can see it even on low brightness. I have never done this test before, so cannot comment on other oleds I've owned.
Could it be compression? I say this because after seeing the effect in this video. I tested others, and i found that the severity of the effect is lesser. Also the uniformity changed between videos, whilst staying consistant to each.
Your video was much more pronounced than some others, this makes believe that there is something else in the works.
I know when i use a pure black wallpaper, the screen is perfect black. Also im pretty sure the AOD has pure blacks too

Last night I tried some more test together with my OP6 and sadly I can confirm it! You can see in the attached files, the upper phone is the Note 9 while the lower one is the OP6. Both phone are on 50% screen brightness. The Note 9 has even the Video Enhancement enabled and I tried all the screen settings (adaptive, cinema amoled, pitcure amoled and basic) without any positive result. I took these pictures with my iPhone X and I can tell you for sure that the problem is even more evident in person!

Yes, unfortunately, I am experiencing the black crush problem on my Verizon variant. I also experienced this problem with my previous T-Mobile Note 9. The screen calibration app from the Play Store does help, but for a phone this pricey, this software quality control problem is unacceptable.

YES. That’s why I returned it. It’s incredible even considering that S9 had exactly the same problem when it was released. I really did think this time samsung could take care of it....but I was wrong.

Mine's going back today. And, unfortunately, I'm giving up on Samsung with these phones. It's too bad, beacuse everything else has been stellar, but my typical use case makes for this problem to be too significant and too frequent to overlook ?.

I don’t remember the episode number. It should be one at the end of the season. Anyway, you can see it by yourself that is dark. With such a problem when you look in a dark part of a scene (for instance someone's hair) you just see a black mess with no details in it. [emoji20]

not exactly what i said either.
does removing auto brightness and adjusting it a bit more help?
because it just seems that's the issue.
edit:
i did tests with the note 9, note 8, and note 3
while there are slight differences between each device nothing like the pictures you posted.
all screens had auto brightness at off and brightness at 50 percent which was more than enough.
lets not forget 50% on a samsung and 50% in another brand might not have the same intensity/range.
and something obvious but i feel i must add in this case is that samsung phones when video is paused will auto dimm the screen a couple seconds after playback is halted.
in order to do your tests i figure you also paused playback. i just hope you didn't take pictures of when it was dimmed... because lol well that would be dimwitted.
when i compare one phone dimmed and one not dimmed i get the exact same results as your pictures. a brief touch of the screen restores normal brightness.
I have a little black crush on mine. But some people forget we are watching stuff on a mobile device that is packaged for small screens. The video is compressed and sometimes even the data.
I made sure to watch some high quality content, not just 1080p or 4k. Dim and well lit content. Also, a wide variety of YouTube videos. I experienced some black crush and many times brightening the luxury of the screen helped. To conserve battery some content I don't need to see all the details. Other times I knew it was compression compressing all the colors and shades out it.
The best way to test for black crush are contrasty pictures. I see many of the complaints about videos but sometimes it can't be helped as I'll watch the same content (same exact file for scientific reasons) on my JS9500 which is semi calibrated and Bam! there it is still. I've tested some with the camera and sometimes I will have slight black crush in darker pictures but it would be a challenging picture anyways. Sometimes black crush is non contrasty dark content and/or compression and codecs.

You can see what you want to see. I don't care.
If you want to believe that I took pictures of two phones letting one dim itself just to waste my time here writing this post...well do it.
I owned all Samsung phones since the first galaxy...let alone the many other phones I owned...S9 plus and Note 9 have such an issue. I read that S9 was updated back in may to solve it (although some say it's not solved at all). I don't feel like waiting 3 months to see maybe this problem solved. I paid a lot of money for note 9 and as I did for S9+ I decided to return it for this reason. Nor I feel like crancking all the way up brightness just to be able to see some details in dark areas nor even up to 60 nor 70% (thus you feel better?!?) when my other phones don't have such an issue (nor even my s8+ and note8).
Maybe for someone else this is not a problem, especially if they don't use the phone to watch movies or series on Netflix or other streaming services. I do. And I don't waste a thousand euros for something that won't let me see a decent image quality.

Oh well....my others mobile devices packed for small screen don't have such an issue. And I can watch whatever I want...but one has it and the other one doesn't.
There cannot be compression when we are talking about the same video on two different phones one showing the issue while the other one don't. I mean I even posted pictures showing the issue. And believe me when I tell you that they don't make justice to the real difference between the two devices....it was really worst in person. I don't need to be convinced of the contrary thanks.
Maybe the most clever way to answer could be "sorry pal, you got a lemon". I cannot exclude it (although after owning S9+ with the same issue I'm a bit suspicious about it). But no settings nor codec nor compression.

Lol. Drinking orange crush and Bombay Sapphire.
that brightness slider must be really heavy. wonder which is more difficult:
- moan about it and return the device
or
- move it 1/4 of an inch to the right. (that's 6.4 millimeters to you)
so can you take a picture of the same scenario as before but with a bit more brightness? its for science
now take an other picture of both phones maxed out. its for the win
For the last 2 weeks i have identified an issue with its amoled screen. Under low light condition, with brightness level at its minimum, and with dark gray color as background (e.g. Dark mode in facebook), I noticed some lines of black and white which irritates my usage. I compared this with my mate 20 pro and I have not seen any of it. Iv tried to look about this in the internet but Im not sure. There are articles that say its banding, some say glue gate issue. Any thoughts?

They hadnt heard about this problem yet but they promised to check it up and get back to me.
I also informed him about my camera problem which is that pictures taken in normal cam mode ends up brighter and HDR like. This is not a problem on my mate 9 and mate 20.
Only way of getting pictures right is to switch to pro mode or change the filter....

Jolly good, mate!
But it would be nice knowing what kind of display they will replace with... Hopefully Samsungs or LG's.
I hope Ill get mine fixed. They pain is to start all fresh from scratch after though... Even with backing up Ill always end up having to manage my themes, icons, Apex launcher, modded apps/games, game data from Super Clone etc. Not to speak about Dual Space app(s), Google Play Storet etc etc....
Hmmmm...
Last night I discovered another screen/image issue...
I have a photo of my son as wallpaper. When I lowered the brightness to minimum (in a dark room), the photo looked like a 8-bit coloured photo from the 80's... Low colours, high contrast and looked like a sketch!!!!

Hmmm.. seems like weve got an option after the update for the screen. Anti flimmer on/off. I turned it off and it helped me a bit I think.
Check it out!

Nope... Problem persists...
Just wonder how to explain properly for Huawei support here in Sweden in order for a replacement. They still havent got back to me yet......
Any updats about the screen issue, Zaxarive?
Huawei support, Sweden just called me.
1. They will escalate the issue with the camere higher up and get back to me.
But I guess the issue with "brighten up"/processed images from "normal" camera mode is caused by Huawei's new feautre "Ultra vision/Cine"... Never the less, it would be nice beingbable to turn it off when needed. I mean the whole thing just basiclly feels like a "HDR function", something that on iPhones have been a feautre the past 10 years. Apple lets you turn it off/on...
2. Most likely our problem with our displays in low brightness comes from having a OLED instead of a Super AMOLED... It just works in another way... Pity but the truth..! OLED has a much better blackness BUT with the costs of much harder to get a "sharp bright" image i low brightness mode....
Ill let you know when Huawei Support has got back to me.
Few months after any update?
