Note 8 : Options for Root Users - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Note 8 : Options for Root Users
When T-Mobile started locking bootloaders on their devices I decided to not get the T-Mobile variant of the S7 edge and decided to get the unlocked version of the S7 edge. Luckily there were some developers who catered to T-Mobile users on the international variant and they enabled us to flash the T-Mobile CSC on their ROM’s after they made some modifications. This enabled us to run their Rom’s on T-Mobile while getting many things like Volte and Wi-Fi calling working. I’m wondering if this will be the same case with the Galaxy Note 8. I know we lose Samsung pay and Knox but there are many other benefits that we get with root that I have not been able to get on stock ROM’s. I’m currently running a S8 ROM on my s7 edge so I get extended use out of my device and I can also control any aspect of it I would like. Having Magisk also enables you to use android pay so I would much rather have root. Anyway, I wanted to see if there were any other users like me using T-Mobile and hoping for some support using international devices and ROM’s. I could survive without Wi-Fi calling but after hearing the quality in calls made over voice over LTE and T-Mobile decommissioning its HSPA in favor of VoLTE it quickly becomes apparent in the future we will need VoLTE. I assume one day Samsung may lock bootloaders on all their devices and that will be a dark day indeed.
Some root apps I use that I have not found good replacement for
• Viper4Android
• AdAway
• Titanium Backup
• BetterBattery Stats
• Being able to undervolt or control kernel performance

Instead of Adaway, I use dns66 on non rooted devices, which is decent, and barely uses any battery life. Also gives you a option to import other hosts, bypass blocking for certain apps, and use custom dns servers.
I also have PIA vpn which has an option to block ads within the app, but seems to have a effect on battery life. Here is a link to dns66 github.

for the S8+ tmobile variant - before root, I was using adhell its free also has a package disable built in also, it doesn't disable everything but enough to feel happy as well as Samsung allowing us to disable more system apps than the Note 4,
I really was surprised by disabling system apps without issues, they are tending to our wants so we don't root, but I love my call record feature and that was the 1st thing I enabled with root.
also about the unlocked version... what some are doing is flashing the original Samsung firmware from tmobile or whatever provider they have by mixmatching and Odin flashing CSC and Modem if they preferred to the unlocked and having the wifi-calling feature, all the phones including sprint Verizon, were are all the same phones, and the firmwares have multi-csc for the other carriers to make most of the features work.
look at the Samsung galaxy S8 and S8 Plus area for more info... :good:

If you goto the Apps tab, and select the cog wheel, and select No apps bypass by default, instead of System Apps bypass by default. Seems to fix the ads appearing in app.
Need to figure out which system app is causing the ads to appear. If someone figures it out let me know.
***Edit***
Might have figured it out the ads stop showing in apps. In Dns66 under App section enable show system apps, then scroll down to the below, and click the tab so it turns grey.
1.) Android System Webview
com.google.android.webview
2.) HTML Viewer

It's safe to assume that root won't be available for the tmobile note 8, correct? If so, that's a bummer, considering they have the best promotion (buy 1 get 2)

Root on the Note 8 can be theoretically done if someone can get the same type of files used on the S8+.

Wasn't there root for the T-Mobile Note 7 (short lived as it may be), I believe root was possible...unless I am mistaken, why would it be different for the T-Mobile Note 8?

My concern regarding root is not that it IS achieved but what Samsung will actively do to prevent it with future updates.
Case in point:
wccftech.com/samsung-bug-bounty-200000/
It's becoming painfully clearer with each iteration of flagship Galaxy that Samsung wants to rein in any outside control.

Sorry, rocking which phone (Note7 or Note8)? Which variant (Snapdragon / Exynos)?
How did you root?

Guess he's talking about the Note 7 as he mentions still having 100 percent battery charge

sadly yeah, aslong as we could find a way to get root im happy. all i want is adaway.
I don't think it's dead
If they found a way to develop for the S6 edge then I'm sure there's a way for the S7 Edge
Why are they dead? I just got this phone and curious why?

Did you try Adblock Fast that is build into Samsung 4.0? Download from App store and then manually setup using instructions.
I'm using it on my S7 with zero issues and no ads. Of course, limited to Samsung browser.
I'm using adguard which sets up personal VPN on phone to block ads. Seems to work for all apps but does hit battery life a bit. Worth it for me.

Yes. Legit. It got bad ratings but works perfect on my S7. I think people haven't realized you need Samsung Internet 4.0 or it won't work.

Bootloaders are locked. Flash secured and all. All us carriers, not the exynos, but all us snapdragons, including tmobile. We are on twitter and got a response from John Legere who claims to be working on a potential solution to at least getting tmobiles unlocked. Historically we have always been fine, but for some reason we aren't now. Doesn't make sense for the exynos to unlocked and SD to be locked imo

I'm sure something will come up eventually. Us folks on ATT are used to being screwed with the locked bootloaders. Think it might be new for T-Mobile users though. It might take a little longer, but ATT Samsung devices typically get root after some point.
I've had it since launch, my Nexus 6 basically died. I miss the debloating root allows, like how I'm forced to have the Directv app when I don't have any interest in having Directv. I do like it though it's a nice phone. If we can get root to remove the bloatware I'm for that otherwise I'll live with it for a year until something better drops.

I'm using it now as personal VPN on adguard was eating battery. Just make sure to set it for no ads (default is some safe ads). On some ads I was getting occasional pop-up ads.

VPNs like Adguard don't "eat" battery. What your seeing is that the system attributes all battery used by apps that access the internet to the VPN.

Seems like Pre-Lollipop builds were always hacked for root. Also, at least on my S5 G900A, Pre-rooted 5.0 was able to be flashed as long as the BL was kept OA1 (KK 4.4.4). But if you took the OTA to 5.0, no root ever! Also they totally locked it down with 5.1. FU ATT!!!!:silly:
But they sure did get into that S6 pretty fast, didn't they? Go figure.
I applied to this Samsung Mobile Insights program. Might get a free G935A or G930A if accepted into it. I do not know how I will live without root, but at least it has a sdcard. I do not have a good feeling about a battery that does not come out though...

Tab S2 SM-T817V (Verizon) and root using SRS Root?

is anyone willing to give it a try and use some root required apps to verify it works?

hey, thanks for trying, i just got my tablet today,...suprisingly, native hotspot works without any limitations or extra apps (i still have UDP), but i would like root so i can enable all apps to be multiwindow! i use in the car with waze for navigation split screened with my podcast/media player app. waze isn't enabled for multiwindow, and neither are some of my other apps i use on a daily basis. overall though, i am impressed with the tablet, except the frame is plastic-y, wish it had some kind of metal frame instead but still nice. "upgrading" from note pro 12.2 verizon, but i think i'll still hold on to it because i have it working the way i want, bought this new one specifically for phantom 4, until i get comfortable using it as my daily tablet.
thanks again for trying the srsroot app. guess we're still **** out of luck rooting.
i think there is an app out there that EDITS/MODIFIES an apk to enable multiwindow mode, but doesnt work with all apps, and some apps that depend on certain services or accounts and verifying don't work properly, rooting was the only easy way to enable multiwindow for everything for me.

VZW Bloatware - Not much on the N8

With my Note 7 and its inferior replacement, the S7E, Verizon had loaded both phones up with a plethora of bloatware. On top of what was preinstalled, I'd constantly find new apps magically appearing every so often.
I subsequently learned that the spontaneous new apps were installed without my permission by DT Ignite, malware (IMO) pre-installed by Verizon. Once that was disabled, things quieted down.
My Note 8 that arrived yesterday had far fewer initial crapware games and apps, and I can't find any evidence of DT Ignite in the Apps Manager. Has Verizon finally smartened up, or do you think they'll find another way to pollute our phones?

It's a background app installed by carriers that will download and install games and apps on your phone whether you want them or not. It's very annoying to purge your phone of bloatware only to see it come back mysteriously by itself.

I had used PDP (Package Disabler Pro) to disable nearly everything it recommended on my Note 7 and the S7E that replaced it, at least until Nougat was released. After the upgrade PDP didn't work anymore, but I pretty much knew what to disable by then and DT Ignite was at the top of my list. Nothing came back after I shut that down, and the 2 or 3 security updates VZW has pushed since then didn't re-enable it.
I'm cautiously optimistic that the Note 8 will stay fairly clean ... at least until Oreo is released for the N8.
et t-mobile tu, brute?
interesting discussion chaps.
i know this is a VZW thread and i apologize for the intercept, but is tmobile likely doing the same thing?
would this ignition program find such apps on t mobile? i get the note8 friday from tmobile (my other phones are unlocked non carrier version so this is the first time ill need to look for stuff like this)

Most of the totally useless crapware cannot be disabled without a package disabler app
FWIW, the one I usually use (Package Disabler Pro) is not working on my Note FE, but, BK Disabler is.
I'd say it's well worth the couple of dollars vs dealing with unwanted bloat ware...

I avoid disabling anything to avoid issues when updates are pushed - I never disabled DT Ignite on my VZW S8 and I never had anything pushed on my phone. Also if you don't want to be tracked, you're using the wrong operating system to begin with.

Good for you, seriously, but that wasn't my experience. I'd wake up to new, unwanted games and apps on my Note 7 and S7 Edge pretty regularly. And after disabling DT Ignite, I never had a problem with any of the updates, including the Nougat release for the S7E. I had to disable DT Ignite again after that installed, but the 3 security updates since have all installed just fine.
Not sure if this is the right place but here it goes. I actually use some VZW stuff. I like the native VZW to VZW video calling. I also love the VZW premium visual voicemail. The VZW cloud is handy, but I can do without.
Anyone know how I get this stuff?
You mean on a non Verizon issued Note 8 or something?
Not bloatware, but I'm pissed ours didn't get the upgrade for the swipe down on homescreen bringing down notifications rather than a 2nd app drawer command.

I just got off the phone with VZW. My HD calling, video calling and visual voicemail isn't working. Not sure if the CSR was right, but she said there is an advance calling setting on the VZW N8 that I couldn't find on my unlocked Sammy N8. I said maybe mine isn't provisioned correctly. She said she wasn't sure. I am going to call back tomorrow to speak with tech support

If you really want it, Nova Launcher can do this. I actually prefer using the fingerprint reader for this, though, and you don't need Nova Launcher for it (although I'd rather have Nova Launcher than not).
Yes action launcher does too but the Note is the only phone I usually use the default launcher with. The sensor isn't convenient to me yet.

To root or not.

Mod edit
Hi. My old phone is rooted, and i have repetitouch on it. It served me well with the macro recordings.
However i am unable to find any macro recording app similar to repetitouch that can run on unrooted phone.
Now on my note 9, i am not sure to root it or not.
Or do you guys have an alternative app similar to repetitouch which i am unable to find?
Dont do it. I did away with rooting since the Note 8 and i am now well satisfied with the Note 9's performance amd the phone as a whole. Try to weigh what advantages rooting will bring you vs not rooting. I no longer believe that is necessary any more. Just my two cents.
I agree. There was a time when I flat out wouldn't use a phone without rooting it first. As phones and firmware have improved over the years I see fewer and fewer reasons to do it.
I know there's probably the odd thing you'll miss but you'd be surprised how quickly you adapt to not having them.

Edit: Both are nonroot.
I didn't root my Note 7, S7E, S8+ or Note 8. The main thing I miss rooting for is Titanium backup of apps and their data. It's the app data that one can't get transferred over 100% when switching to a new phone. Plus it is just nice to have an app and it's data backed up for several reasons. There is a non root app/data alternative with Helium, but it doesn't work on all apps.
I would probably still be rooting if Samsung didn't punish us by locking our phones down to 80% charging limit. But that negative is too much for me to take, so no root. These phones work very well now without root, except for app/data backup as I stated.
If it's the snapdragon model then root won't even be available for it.

Google Samfail root 80%
The Exynos is for rooting.
Love TiB, AdAway and others to name a few.
Is it a deal breaker to NOT be able to root? A few years ago it was, today not really.
I just wish that all phones on all platforms had a switch that the user could decide whether or not they wanted to unlock the bootloader and do what they wanted and accept the risks involved.
I'm using Acr call recorder and it doesn't require root.

I have acr pro. It works great and don't need root. I do need to root since I need titanium to restore my data from swype (themes and backup words) which they stopped development so cannot retrieve backup data, theme or words without it. Also, you have lmt if you want to add quick launch app and add the menu button which is gone for android. As well as many other apps like titanium, viper 4 android, screen timeout, adblock plus, no ads YouTube, ...
Downside, it can break screen mirroring, samsung pay...

This is ridiculous I won't be able to root my note 9 if I knew it before I would buy exynos version from abroad. I can't live without ad away, unlimited hotspot, and all modifications. First modification I thought it will be sound level as it so quite compere to s9+
No problem buddy, happy to help.

Pretty sure Samsung locks in your charging limit to 80% on all their newer Snapdragon phones. They've been doing this for a while. If it has changed to our benefit (no 80% charging limit), then I would seriously reconsider rooting.
I don't use that app so I don't know of any alternatives, but if there are none then my advice is simply to go ahead and root (so long as you can live without the things you lose with root). Do a cost/benefit and see if it's worth it to you, unless someone suggests an alternative app that wouldn't require root of course.
Oh and if people are going off topic then just politely bring us back please...no need to throw a fit (see rule 2). It's a community, not customer service.

Unlimited hotspot?

Note 9 sm-n960u bootloader

So I know that this phone has a locked bootloader, but is there a way I can still root? Bolt loader allows people to download custom roms but i don't plan on doing that. Is there a way I can root without the intention of downloading custom roms?
Also im.new so sorry if I'm doing anything wrong.
I'm a long time Android user that used to be big on rooting and ROMs. That said, using ADB and Swift Installer or Substratum, I've got every mod I wanted without root.
ADB allows you to remove bloatware from your default user profile, but allows software updates as well. This prevents such apps from ever running in the background.
Swift Installer or Substratum combined with themes gives you great customization of the interface such as background color, accent color, and icon style. It can even theme apps that the Samsung store themes cannot. Samsung has left access to these theming engines enabled in the software for the Note 9 so far, but this could be blocked in a future update.
I love Swift Installer and it can be downloaded from the Play Store. Make sure you're on the default Samsung theme before applying themes.

There is no root as yet for the Note 9 U OR U1 model. It is being worked on though, and progress can be checked by going to the General Discussion section.

Can't you get exynos models from tmobile? Or do you only gets those from Samsung. And I really can't "trade" it in since it's being paid off.
All US Note 9 models are Snapdragon. Only the International versions (N960F) are Exynos. You can find them easily, but the warranty may be an issue.
Anybody tried this method for snapdragon models http://androidbiits.com/root-samsung-galaxy-note-9-sm-n960u-crownqltesq-easily/

Nope. Clickbait than a MOFO!!!
https://desktop.firmware.mobi/device:1950/firmware:19034
That's supposedly the files they point to but as you can see, CF-autoroot is not supported for our device.
Sites like androidbiits copy and paste the same article for every device they list on their site and simple change the device model. If the Note 9 was rooted by Chainfire, it would definitely be on the xda front page.
