So I know that this phone has a locked bootloader, but is there a way I can still root? Bolt loader allows people to download custom roms but i don't plan on doing that. Is there a way I can root without the intention of downloading custom roms?
Also im.new so sorry if I'm doing anything wrong.
I'm a long time Android user that used to be big on rooting and ROMs. That said, using ADB and Swift Installer or Substratum, I've got every mod I wanted without root.
ADB allows you to remove bloatware from your default user profile, but allows software updates as well. This prevents such apps from ever running in the background.
Swift Installer or Substratum combined with themes gives you great customization of the interface such as background color, accent color, and icon style. It can even theme apps that the Samsung store themes cannot. Samsung has left access to these theming engines enabled in the software for the Note 9 so far, but this could be blocked in a future update.
I love Swift Installer and it can be downloaded from the Play Store. Make sure you're on the default Samsung theme before applying themes.

There is no root as yet for the Note 9 U OR U1 model. It is being worked on though, and progress can be checked by going to the General Discussion section.

Can't you get exynos models from tmobile? Or do you only gets those from Samsung. And I really can't "trade" it in since it's being paid off.
All US Note 9 models are Snapdragon. Only the International versions (N960F) are Exynos. You can find them easily, but the warranty may be an issue.
Anybody tried this method for snapdragon models http://androidbiits.com/root-samsung-galaxy-note-9-sm-n960u-crownqltesq-easily/

Nope. Clickbait than a MOFO!!!
https://desktop.firmware.mobi/device:1950/firmware:19034
That's supposedly the files they point to but as you can see, CF-autoroot is not supported for our device.
Sites like androidbiits copy and paste the same article for every device they list on their site and simple change the device model. If the Note 9 was rooted by Chainfire, it would definitely be on the xda front page.

i'm not sure how safe this rooting app is, its the first i've heard of it, but that post gives me a little hope. i checked the firmware build number and it does match.
is anyone willing to give it a try and use some root required apps to verify it works?

hey, thanks for trying, i just got my tablet today,...suprisingly, native hotspot works without any limitations or extra apps (i still have UDP), but i would like root so i can enable all apps to be multiwindow! i use in the car with waze for navigation split screened with my podcast/media player app. waze isn't enabled for multiwindow, and neither are some of my other apps i use on a daily basis. overall though, i am impressed with the tablet, except the frame is plastic-y, wish it had some kind of metal frame instead but still nice. "upgrading" from note pro 12.2 verizon, but i think i'll still hold on to it because i have it working the way i want, bought this new one specifically for phantom 4, until i get comfortable using it as my daily tablet.
thanks again for trying the srsroot app. guess we're still **** out of luck rooting.
i think there is an app out there that EDITS/MODIFIES an apk to enable multiwindow mode, but doesnt work with all apps, and some apps that depend on certain services or accounts and verifying don't work properly, rooting was the only easy way to enable multiwindow for everything for me.
Note 8 : Options for Root Users
When T-Mobile started locking bootloaders on their devices I decided to not get the T-Mobile variant of the S7 edge and decided to get the unlocked version of the S7 edge. Luckily there were some developers who catered to T-Mobile users on the international variant and they enabled us to flash the T-Mobile CSC on their ROM’s after they made some modifications. This enabled us to run their Rom’s on T-Mobile while getting many things like Volte and Wi-Fi calling working. I’m wondering if this will be the same case with the Galaxy Note 8. I know we lose Samsung pay and Knox but there are many other benefits that we get with root that I have not been able to get on stock ROM’s. I’m currently running a S8 ROM on my s7 edge so I get extended use out of my device and I can also control any aspect of it I would like. Having Magisk also enables you to use android pay so I would much rather have root. Anyway, I wanted to see if there were any other users like me using T-Mobile and hoping for some support using international devices and ROM’s. I could survive without Wi-Fi calling but after hearing the quality in calls made over voice over LTE and T-Mobile decommissioning its HSPA in favor of VoLTE it quickly becomes apparent in the future we will need VoLTE. I assume one day Samsung may lock bootloaders on all their devices and that will be a dark day indeed.
Some root apps I use that I have not found good replacement for
• Viper4Android
• AdAway
• Titanium Backup
• BetterBattery Stats
• Being able to undervolt or control kernel performance
Instead of Adaway, I use dns66 on non rooted devices, which is decent, and barely uses any battery life. Also gives you a option to import other hosts, bypass blocking for certain apps, and use custom dns servers.
I also have PIA vpn which has an option to block ads within the app, but seems to have a effect on battery life. Here is a link to dns66 github.

for the S8+ tmobile variant - before root, I was using adhell its free also has a package disable built in also, it doesn't disable everything but enough to feel happy as well as Samsung allowing us to disable more system apps than the Note 4,
I really was surprised by disabling system apps without issues, they are tending to our wants so we don't root, but I love my call record feature and that was the 1st thing I enabled with root.
also about the unlocked version... what some are doing is flashing the original Samsung firmware from tmobile or whatever provider they have by mixmatching and Odin flashing CSC and Modem if they preferred to the unlocked and having the wifi-calling feature, all the phones including sprint Verizon, were are all the same phones, and the firmwares have multi-csc for the other carriers to make most of the features work.
look at the Samsung galaxy S8 and S8 Plus area for more info... :good:

If you goto the Apps tab, and select the cog wheel, and select No apps bypass by default, instead of System Apps bypass by default. Seems to fix the ads appearing in app.
Need to figure out which system app is causing the ads to appear. If someone figures it out let me know.
***Edit***
Might have figured it out the ads stop showing in apps. In Dns66 under App section enable show system apps, then scroll down to the below, and click the tab so it turns grey.
1.) Android System Webview
com.google.android.webview
2.) HTML Viewer

Wasn't there root for the T-Mobile Note 7 (short lived as it may be), I believe root was possible...unless I am mistaken, why would it be different for the T-Mobile Note 8?
My concern regarding root is not that it IS achieved but what Samsung will actively do to prevent it with future updates.
Case in point:
wccftech.com/samsung-bug-bounty-200000/
It's becoming painfully clearer with each iteration of flagship Galaxy that Samsung wants to rein in any outside control.

Well, nevermind. I'm on the official Oreo and I just got through same pop-up. That sucks.
a bit more info

Hopefully some developer will hack the whole theme-engine; Samsung copied this system from Xiaomi, the MIUI-shop works exactly the same, and you can download themes elsewhere, then apply them on your own device (and it's not illegal!). Besides, there are a lot of great free MIUI-themes available for years now.
Major bummer for some.

Thanks for the link, however, that was no more info at all. LOL. Just them repeating what we said, then guessing why Samsung is doing it, then admitting they don't really know either.
It seems this has taken everyone by surprise and Samsung has offered no explanation at all.
I just read this on some other site and it's retarded, some themes are meant to be released for free. I could get with getting a notification for making a donation towards the developer but forcing this on people seems rather dumb.
Just another reason to root our devices!
Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk
My guess is the low quality themes were negatively impacting performance. If you notice reputable themes are under 10 MB. Poorly made themes are much larger and run terribly. I prefer choice over the lack thereof but I've seen light and dark themes with various color options in the previews of Pie.
Still, I'm not a fan of the dead spaces and excess use of bubbles in Pie but I'll reserve judgment for the final product.

Yes, but the phone would have been way more expensive. And that's also not the only reason for me to root, there are several other reasons like using Titanium Backup, making a complete NAND-backup using TWRP, using Xposed etc.

That makes sense. Wish we could root without losing some of the core features though. I have a Snapdragon, so I don't have to worry about it. XD
So....theme expires, apply another one, go back to the one we want to use? I switch themes ever couple days so for me it's not a bahumbug. I haven't paid for any yet, I just stick to the free ones. That $2.50 is hard to swallow for shared icons and wallpaper with different palette. This is not to knock the actual creates here and some on there, but I've seen a lot of them release different colour variants for the same price and all that was changed was the colour. Wtf?!

Yes and it works on other devices too.
Does anyone know if this actually works for the Galaxy S10?
I've checked the notes on google play and the only thing I've seen is that it works for pie (which I suspect means will work on the S10) and that for themes they need to be updated for the s10 (or pie). I'm guessing as long as it's all updated for pie it should work on the S10?
I've downloaded them, but I'm not quite ready to plunge into applying a theme - I've read a few comments it that they work with one UI but not all parts theme yet.

I'd like to ask you guys, if it would be worth to root the phone and install a custom ROM / kernel
I can't see a percentage for the brightness, which is annoying, and the clock is on the left, I'd like to have it centered or on the right
With a good kernel, would it help to improve the battery life?
Thank you very much, in advance, any advices are welcome
With Samsung once you root and trip Knox you can't go back to stock - ever. And some apps will not work anymore. This is actually my first phone where I haven't seen any need for root anyway.
Take a look at good lock, with it you can customize allmost everything, incl. clock postition.

latest july build seems to have decent battery without the need to root.
also using samsung goodlock and its various components, you will be able to do a lot of stuff that were only possible on a rooted device. such as move clock position and much more UIwise.

so play around with all the goodlock addons 1st and see if its worthing staying on stock. as you know rooting will kill Spay...so
( i can never stay on stock since its much to fun to flash roms every now and then)

other than this i really dont see the need for root-custom rom for my phone.
i will wait till the end of this month and see.

you should be on may release. manually download it and flash it with Odin.
I'm in the same boat here and am quite surprised by it. I ALWAYS root my phone, first thing, asap. I specifically bought the exynos version of the N9 so I could root. But after playing with it I find myself wondering why I need root.
Ad blocking - kind of miss this but using Brave browser mostly fixes that.
Customization - GoodLock is AWESOME. Takes place of rom customizations and Tasker, which was a must have for me.
Call recording seems to work, which it didn't on my Pixel.
Get to keep Samsung pay, which is much better than Google pay. And secure folder is a lot better than the name suggests, since it provides doubles if apps allowing multiple active logins.
Someone convinced me why I need to root this phone??

to have fun with it and try new things. ( i get bored fast and quickly want more)
if you want to use the phone within the allowed parameters and not want anything more than you already have, than don't root. because the 1st thing happens when you root is that knox fuse gets tripped and apps relying on the device's security integrity will stop trusting it and fail to work. but apart from S pay you can get prety much all apps working one way or an other on a rooted phone just as a stock one would.( lately secure folder was found to work! thx dr
.ketan). people have turned to google pay instead of S pay.
but i do understand that its like: why break what's not broken?
some of us like the freedom and ability to do more. its not essential but since we own the device i guess our though process is what can we do to get even more out of this device.( price is not cheap so we need a reason to justify having bought it guess and have our money's worth ! lol )
but it is true. with good lock the visual aspect that was once one of the big reasons of rooting is now less and less of a reason. same goes with themes as well. nice alternatives to the stock themes and store bought ones like the wonderfull app: #hex ( xda made! search for it here and on playstore) allows you to theme. it has slimmed the gap even more between the need to root and not having to.
one aspect though that is important is being able to remove content and aslo add content like unsupported region carrier specific features eg:CSC , i put canadian CSC on my n960n.( somewill argue rhat if i had bought the canadian variant i would not need to do this. but the other reasons outlined in this message outweighs this.)
all in all im happy with my decision. and i have no trouble understanding that you or others are also quite happy with not having rooted.
what is good is that rooting has put pressure and have given samsung and other device companies examples and insight on what the community wants. by rooting and modding the device we show exactly what we need/want. and the result ( goodlock and other additions) that are aosp inspired has really made the device shine and be an attractive experiance to the general public and rooted user alike.

I've definitely rooted a bunch of phones. Every phone in my signature that could be rooted, and many friends phones etc. I've been a huge proponent of root. This phone just seems to not need it, at least not yet at this point. When sammy stops pushing updates in timely manner I will probably reconsider.
You are absolutely right that root, and the xda community in particular, has really pushed OEMs to make things better. Its great progress.

goodlock can be found on the Samsung store.
there is also an alternative called nicelock in the guides forum.
basically goodlock in it self is nothing but a downloader/manager or various plugins. they are the ones that modd the system.
