Can't access 5 Ghz wireless network - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On my Fire HD 8 7th Gen I can't access 5 Ghz networks. It accepts the password, and tires to connect several times before eventually saying "Wi-Fi Connection Failure". 2.4Ghz works fine. This happens on two different devices.
Any idea what could be causing this?

Disregard. Apparently the Amazon Fire doesn't support 802.11ac.

I'm pretty sure they do, but it's an option that isn't available to us in wifi settings which are incredibly limited.

I can't imagine why it wouldn't use the latest standard by default if it has access to it. Are you saying that it's there, but we can't use it w/o root?

Not sure. Like a lot of those hidden settings, they reset at reboot. If I had to guess, something in the framework settings is marked as 'persistent=false'

5th-7th Fire devices (Fire, Fire 7, Fire HD 8) do not support 802.11ac. SOC decision; likely a cost saving measure.

They don't have 5GHz hardware, I was surprised by this as well but it is understandable considering I purchased mine for $35.

not that app in particular, the superuser app in general. It's present in my friends G1 rooted roms, and I think that's why a few of the programs I want to use don't work and say I don't have root.

Oh okay. It was in myn's up until his most recent release... I'm not sure why it isn't anymore.
it has been in several releases in the past but has never worked on the vogue. I removed it from my builds because, if it dont work, why not remove if to save some space.
I gave this new SuperUser 2.1 a try using RogueTools as the test as it requires SU.
In any case. It didn't notifiy me that RogueTools was requsting su however it did halt and restrict RogueTools from changing both the frequency and lcd density.
YMMV.

lol, I'm still trying to figure out why the two tethering apps don't work and why bluetooth file transfer doesn't work. Both say I do'nt have root. Doesn't matter much now though, seeing as i'm upgrading soon.

Yeah, that's the one I was hoping he was talking about.

First time Nexus owner, few simple questions.

Just switched to tmo and purchased a 64gb Nexus 6 from Motorola. Should be here next week.
I had a few device & carrier questions being this is my first Nexus device (besides tablets)
I will be using this device on T-Mobile but it's from the Moto store.
Who will I be getting updates from? T Mobile or Google directly?
I plan on flashing a custom rom (most likely Pure Shamu from what I've gathered) being that one model of nexus supports all carriers (radios).. I read that T-Mobile will be pushing an update to support wifi-calling (which I need in my home). Will that work on my particular device or is there a specific T-Mobile Nexus that I'd need?
Lastly, I do use wifi tether quite a bit, and on my current devices rom they have the unlimited wifi tether hack.
Is that something built into a rom or has to be done separately?
Thanks for any help that can be given.
Oh, forgot one question.
Also read up on the encryption ordeal.
I don't need that on my device but is there any benefit to have it or not have it enabled?
Again, thank you.

Nexus is GSM unlocked and should theoretically work on all carriers out of the box. I bought mine from the motorola store and is working without any problems.
Updates come from google directly.
If you want to use Wifi calling, I believe that you do have to be running stock firmware, nobody will know for sure until it gets released.
I believe Shamu allows you to bypass the tether limit. I'm currently using CM 12 and tethering doesn't count towards my tethering limit.
The only benefit of not having encryption enabled is faster boot times.

If you root your phone, you can add the hack yourself. I am on a stock rom, and my grandfathered data plan has no tethering allotment, but i can tether to my heart's content. I copied this from another thread:
I was able to work around the issue by modifying the following sqlite database (you'll need root):
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
You need to add a new entry to the global table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0.
It looks like you need to do this because some configuration data was added to Android for T-mobile that forwards tethered data to this APN: pcweb.tmobile.com
T-mobile is probably checking to see if your account has tethering enabled when you go through this APN.
After I made this change I also needed to change my APN settings so that it uses ipv4 instead of ipv6. It seems like tethering with ipv6 does not work 100% yet.
I hope this helps.

Definitely rooting and most like run a stockish custom rom. Hoping that's built in if not I'll take a look into that.
Most of the custom roms I've run on t-mobile have that built in and are preset to ipv 4 not 6 for that exact reason.

What line of work are you in?

Internet Stick and Auto brightness

Hello.
In the very beginning of using my mtcb device, there was an option in the settings with auto brightness. It worked with the illumination wire.
I don't know really, what I changes, but it isn't working anymore or let's say, the option isn't there anymore.
What I have done is switching between different Roms and changed a few things in factory settings. Can there be the problem?
The second one: anybody here using a 4g stick? Is it possible? Which model are you using?
I am really unhappy my 3g stick, working with my old parrot Android device, is not working on this one. Which ones are you using?
Thanks for the help

I just ordered a Huawei wingle.
It's an USB-powered Wifi-stick.
It turns on by it self when it get's power, and then it makes a wifi-hotspot, that the radio connects to automaticly.
(I haven't recived it yet, but i hope that it works excatly as i described).
wifi isn't a problem, it's build in. i really just interested in 3g or better 4g

I'm sure it has to do with which kernel modules were compiled in. And as far as I know, we don't have any true original android ROMs for our units, so that's not likely to change soon.

Any ways to remove the ads with the build version V6.6?

Please let me know if you guys know a ways to remove the ads!
No way that we know of. You could return it for another one and NOT let it connect to wifi or put in a sim until after you have relashed it. All phones are shipping with 6.1, so it was your mistake to let it update.

Yeah I know, I didn't done the research before I made the update.
Thanks for letting me know tho!
Things just got more complicated because Amazon has stopped selling the phone! We will have to wait and see what happens next. If it were me, I would contact them right away and find out if a replacement is available still.

So, I'm an app developer and looked into this lately. The latest updates have hardened the lockscreen ads against removal - that includes against doing the above where it only causes a minimized ad on the lockscreen until reboot VS a fullscreen one unless there's a notification available.
(There's at least one way I didn't test such as reverting to the original shipped version of the amazon apps which could maybe work, idk.)
So the above can also be done using an app that displays a non-dismissable notification and starts on boot so that there's no longer any attention needed. Again, this just forces no fullscreen ads.
A newly found Linux flaw, which may work on the device as someone seems to have it working on android, looks like it could be used to gain access needed to completely remove the ads, but I don't really care to look into it and you do so at your own risk.
And of course as there's custom roms available, they won't have ads as well.
Stuff like lockscreen replacement apps - well I tried one and the amazon ad still appeared - the ad developer should have tested against these anyway. There seems to be better developer access to the lockscreen with android N that could in theory work against the ads, but the device OS isn't android N and I feel they wouldn't update it regardless if the ads were easily removed as that would be counterproductive.
If something isn't correct or becomes outdated in this post, just say below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/r1-hd/how-to/blu-r1-hd-v6-6-dirtycowed-f-amazon-root-t3490882
Now that we can root and unlocked the V6.6 version, anyway to remove the ads?
Why not just install the non-Amazon version of the rom V12 using Colton's easy method, and then update it to V17 using vampire's method. The non-Amazon roms don't have the ads to begin with, so there's nothing that needs removing.

Chill dude. Amazon announced extended show <24 hrs ago and explicitly stated no Fire 7. Will some crafty dbag try to port the feature from a HD 8? Probably. Will it work? Likely not (or not well) given limited storage/cpu on Fire 7s and different pixel count between platforms.
