[Q] Badge support for G-Mail (other than custom launcher) - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Peace All...
Does the Note 8 NOT support native notification badges for G-mail anymore?
I've noticed that there is no G-Mail notification badge. Is anyone using the STOCK Samsung launcher notice this?
---Also, PLEASE, before you make suggestions-- I am aware of Nova Launcher and Telsa Unread and every other launcher that supports notification badges---at this point in time I do not wish to use any of those launchers, I want to give Samsung's Launcher a try. My question is for those still using TouchWiz if they notice the same thing or is it just my phone.

I am having the same issue right now. Also, trying to figure out what combination of settings will make the Notification LED go on without vibrating the phone in vibration mode when I get an email.

I read from an S8 thread that to try Rad Unread from the Play store. It works.
Now I have to figure out the LED/Vibrate issue for Gmail.

For some reason i cant download Rad Unread from play store. Maybe I have to side load it
*tried to side load it--won't install on my phone*

Interesting. I loaded it from the Play store on my laptop. It's been working well.

I think I either have an app or a theme that is blocking it---the only thing i can think of is bxActions (Bixby remap button)

Perhaps that is the case. I am running stock everything. I haven't gotten to Bixby yet... LOL So many options to check and configure, I can't get used to this after 2 years of IOS.

I'm interested in this as well. I have TuneIn Radio installed, and always get the option to open that or Clock, but that's it. If nothing else, I'd like to open a slideshow or news reader.

FYI, I did find a thread on another board that suggested Desk Clock Plus... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.DevBob.DeskClockPlus. I can't try it out now, but it's supposed to show up as an option when you start charging on the TS

I've been waiting for an Android app that does the picture slide show like WebOS pretty much since CM9 came out for the Touchpad.
Maybe one day!

check out Desk Clock Plus that i mentioned above. I got to play with it a little last night, and there's an option to do a slideshow. unfortunately, idk how many more goodies we can expect to see for our old beloved touchpads.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Seems to need a load of permissions considering it's application (a clock) - I'm always wary of an app that wants loads of permissions and especially control of things like system settings without proper explanation, etc.

Yeah, I hear ya. It has a ton of different settings, I think including stuff like changing the lock screen and display/screen timeout, which I assume that is for. I wish there were more fine-grained permissions sometimes, or a way to disable certain ones and still have the app work, just not the particular feature that the permission relies on. I believe in CM that's possible at least to some extent.

[Q] ToDo list or calendar

Aside from the EasyDo smart assistant, is there any widgets I can use with the null rom that basically just present my ToDo list, or a calendar widget that maybe shows 2 or 3 events and when clicked shows the rest? I ask because I constantly find myself writing things on my hand like "bills" so I can remember to do them after work. It would be great if I could dedicate a homescreen to a widget for the same purpose and stop writing on my hand.
I'm using Google Calendar and Tick Tick on my gear. They both work nicely with syncing via bluetooth tether
I use Simple Calendar Widget.
It's scrollable and when you tap an event, it opens in calendar.
A bit fiddly to configure on the Gear, so I set up the layout on the phone and then export and copy to Gear.
I used to always be taking my phone out to check what room I had to be in. Now, I can easily check on my watch

Hi can you guide me on how do i install/configure this app to the galaxy gear?do i need to download the .apk and sideload it? Thanks
And also your layout/theme is pretty cool. How did you set it up?

You can either side load it or download via the playstore on the gear.
Once it's installed, you can select a 1x2 widget and configure it how you like in terms of colours, fields to display, font size.
The widget on the top half of the screen is Minimalistic Text widget. I have 1 instance of it with the time and date. And another overlapping instance with just the battery.
There is also the Noticounter widget which I have overlapping everything else.
[edit] As I mentioned, it's easier to setup the widget on your phone and then export it and import it on the Gear. The screen on the Gear is too small and fiddly. That applies to both Simple Calendar and Minimalistic Text [/edit]
Getting calendar apps to sync
I've got calendar apps installed ok, but they don't seem to sync, or at least don't show any meetings. When I open up Today's schedule (the stock gear app) it shows the days appointments fine. How can I get the appointments to show in the non stock apps. I'm running null_19 and had a look through the app settings. The google calendar sync and other calendar apps are set to off. I turned them on, but it killed the battery in about 20 minutes and still didnt seem to sync the meetings.
Its a major gap in the utility of the watch for me, so I'd really appreciate any help or advice. I've trawled all the threads the mention calendar, but I didnt find anything that helped.
Thanks.

Yes, you need to have Null ROM installed to be able to use any widget.
Then, you just set the widget/s on your homescreen.
For syncing, you need to setup your google account in the system settings on the Gear (need Null ROM for that too) and then set it to sync the calendar.
To sync, you will need to setup bluetooth tethering between the Gear and phone. (need Null ROM for that too).
I don't leave it tethered all the time to save the battery. I have tasker installed on the phone and Gear and it enables BT tethering for 2 minutes every hour. that is frequent enough for me to have the calendar on the watch updated.

Are you also on NULL?
i'm on null 11, and yesterday there was released null 20. it is in active development, you got your info all wrong.
The developer stopped providing support through the main thread and PM. He is distributing the Rom through another forum and to be honest still ridiculously active and supportive through multiple threads. However, I think its fair to say he's here to develop, not play helpdesk.
But yeah, as others have said, if you skim through a bit more of the front page of the gear forums, you'll find plenty of discussion showing the null rom is well and kicking.

Thanks for the advice around syncing Rich. I have syncing working fine - I'm usually permanently tethered, probably unnecessarily. When I check the google sync settings it always shows a recent last sync'd time. However, none of the meetings are being loaded into the non-stock apps for some reason. I'm keen to check out the new null_ so I imagine I'll be doing a few full resets as part of that to hopefully clear this odd blockage.

GUIDE: Note 9 Debloat & Customization "Beast Mode" *NO ROOT REQUIRED*

*Disclaimer*
Use these customization tools at your own risk! I'm not responsible for any damage that may happen to your phone.
I'm a big Samsung fan, but I'm not a fan of the animations/UI/bloatware that slows down my phone! So I'd like to share my "Beast Mode" Note 9! I've used these mods since the S8+ in 2017 and 2 days on the Note 9, on the S8+ I've installed OTA updates from my carrier with no issues since release but please proceed with caution per the disclaimer.

All these custom modifications require ADB and the latest Samsung USB Drivers.
How to enable USB debugging and disable Animations: On your Galaxy please go into Settings > About phone > Software information > Tab on Build number 10 times > Go back to main settings page and scroll to the very bottom > Developer options > Enable USB debugging > *OPTIONAL* Scroll down and disable Window animation, Transition animation, Animator duration scale
How to install ADB and setup ADB commands: https://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/system-wide-access-to-fastboot-and-adb-tools/
Samsung USB Drivers: https://developer.samsung.com/galaxy/others/android-usb-driver-for-windows

Uninstalling Bloatware
You can completely remove bloatware from the system permanently using ADB commands. Package list from the Play Store will show all the installed apps/services on your phone for removal, linked below is a list of bloatware that are safe to remove and you can remove the remainder using Package List (CAUTION: Uninstalling some apps/services may cause force closes and unresponsive apps).
Tutorial: https://www.xda-developers.com/uninstall-carrier-oem-bloatware-without-root-access/
Safe to remove list: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73894621&postcount=23

Hiding the Status and Navigation Bar, disabling the Navigation Bar and enabling iPhone X Gestures
You can enjoy your beautiful display without worrying about burn-in from the Status Bar and Navigation by hiding them through enabling Immersive Mode with ADB, after enabling this you'll just have to swipe from the top or bottom of the screen to display the hidden Status/Nav bar. If you want to install a custom bottom bar navigation gesture like the iPhone X, it can be annoying seeing the (hidden)stock Navigation bar everytime you swipe up, luckily these Gesture apps also have the feature to completely disable the stock Navigation bar so it will never appear. I've tested many Gesture Apps and there are 2 that I recommend.
Hiding the Status/Navigation Bar: https://android.gadgethacks.com/how...re-screen-real-estate-no-root-needed-0177297/
Gesture Controls app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.conena.navigation.gesture.control&hl=en_US
Navigation Gestures app: https://www.xda-developers.com/navigation-gestures-iphone-x-app-xda/

Samsung Gestures and Updated Recent Apps look aka "Samsung Android P"
Samsung uses the Edge screen for navigation gestures instead of the bottom, also they have updated the recent apps to look more like Android P. Linked is a Youtube video that showcases these "Samsung Android P" features, but do not download them using the links in the Youtube description. The links in the Youtube description are outdated versions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q38DoGTX4M
How to download: You can download these in the Galaxy Apps store. Search "One Hand Operation +" and "Good Lock 2018".

Enjoy!
noob question here , can that flipboard app be removed using this method? I didn't seem to find it in the lists of safe to remove apps. I also could have missed it. if I understand it right , by using this process I can remove any app without having to have root , or "tripping knox" .

Yes, the flipboard app can be removed as well as other apps. The worst thing that will happen if something does get removed and it was necessary for another app/service to function, it will force closes and your device may become unresponsive. A factory reset or hard factory reset will resolve any errors.
Keen to try this
Thanks very much for sharing these. Immersive mode all the way, YEAH!
I'm about to try this. Just one question, besides the speed of your phone, has this helped with the battery life at all?

Individual apps through cmd on your PC or you can purchase the package disabler from the play store (which I don't really know why you would whereas you can do it on the pc) that is complicated to use

Yes, that's normal, because this method doesn't delete apps. It just hides them(the ones that you can't disable) from the system. You can't just remove system apps without root.

I use an app called granular for this, which also lets you set for all the apps too, which gets rid of the slight delay if you leave it with the samsung default.

Download an app called "package list" and use it to locate Samsung cloud and remove it with CMD. I've removed every Bixby related crap and it didn't break anything. If anything happens, you can always back up your phone to an sd card through smart switch then do a factory reset through recovery.

I chose to map a single press using a Bixby Quick Command. It's setup like this: What you say to Bixby "Google Assistant", What Bixby does "open assistant". It seems to work just fine.
I haven't received the update yet on my Note 9. Even went into the Galaxy Store and no updates are found.

Check the Galaxy Store application. Go into it's settings and enable notifications for app updates and also look at your "My Page" and you will see the "Update" section which will list all of your pre-installed Samsung apps that have available updates. The "All" section is all of your apps installed from the Galaxy Store.

Am I the only one that doesn't appreciate some noisy bugger popping up to ask me questions? Feels like having microsoft clippy on your phone.

What?
Step in the right direction, but you are forced to enable the single press of the button (either to bixby or app action) and this is not good as it will lead to unwanted app/bixby launches.

There is a way. Just install the google assistant launcher application from the link below and that's all.

Double tap power for camera.
Any way to get the screenshot with single press Bixby button. I tried but it gives me a voice command and when screenshot is taken you can see "take a screenshot " message on the top of the screenshot. Any workaround?
Hi,
Is there a way I can remap the Bixby Key to toggle b/w silent & loud on off screen?

Question Disable Google home news (left swipe home screen)

I don,t know how to really call it, but how to disable the Google news feed on the swipe left home?
Another problem is sending a contact shortcut to the homescreen. it says its already there bu its not.
Lucky i didn,t get this phone myself, its UI is just horrible ****.

If you do not like the UI change it or get rid of the mobile. For you it is horrible but for most of users not. It is a matter of taste.
Good luck with it.

Thx, very helpful
use a third party launcher to get rid of google page (lawnchair launcher 2,nova launcher)
and make sure you haven't locked homescreen when adding contact shortcut
I accidentally found a way to remove the Google feed.
I tried installing 'Breeno feed' from APK mirror. The phone required rebooting before it appeared on the left of my homescreen.
Most of the features didn't work properly, probably due to my phone being from the UK. So I uninstalled it (on app menu shows as 'Quick Glance').
After uninstalling it, Google feed no longer appears on my home screen, in fact I can't swipe left at all now
It stayed gone after a reboot and hopefully won't cause any issues.
Just thought I'd share this info and hope it can help someone.
After another reboot today Google feed reappeared..
So I just quickly repeated the steps and it's gone again. I guess it doesn't remain after a reboot.
Hi I've upgraded to this phone today from my find X2 pro and I saw this thread so I extracted the Smart Assistant apk from the find x2 installed it on the find x3 and it works fine but you only get weather, calendar and step counter features with my apk I've attached below if any of you want it.
Edit: there's a bug with weather not updating but otherwise it's better than having google on it I guess
Install apk and reboot.

Excellent it works weather hasn't updated yet but at least it's not an eye sore like the Google feed!

Yh it doesn't update for me either I'll have to let people know that
There is another solution for disabling it completely which was shared by wedaxi on reddit:
Hello, maybe it's late to leave an answer but this is how I removed the google feed completely from the home screen.
You need to enable developer tools on your phone: https://developer.android.com/studio/debug/dev-options
Download Android Studio on your computer (this is the easiest way to install adb wich you will need, but you can search how to install adb independently)
Connect your phone to the computer with usb cable (you can also connect the phone wirelessly but the cable is the easiest method https://developer.android.com/studio/command-line/adb)
Once you are connected use this command from the computer console to disable google feed app
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox
This only disables the app, it does not uninstall it, to do that you probably need to root the phone and I just don't recommend it.
I'm sorry if this method is not the easiest, this is what I did after not finding any other solution and It works.
However the Goolge-App and Lens won't work afterwards!
Hey there,
I found a way to "disable" the Google feed without installing another launcher.
If you hide the Google App in the Privacy Settings, when you swipe left, nothing happens. The icon at the bottom which indicates how many pages there are is still visible but honestly it doesn't bother me much.
Hopefully, Oppo will add the option to hide the Google Feed page.
Cheers
