Disable Touch Input - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Ok so they say you can use your note 8 with the s-pen under water, but when water is on any touchscreen it starts registering random inputs.
My question is, have they found a way for this to not happen? Or is there a setting like on the new gear fit that disables touch input?
I remember when I had my Note 5 there was a way I somehow disabled touch input so it would be s-pen input only. Tried to find out how the hell I did this with no luck.
Anyways with my Note 8 arriving in a few days I'm keen to get this feature on it.
Anyone have any ideas?
Cheers

IIRC, if you pull the S-pen out and keep it close to the phone, it will reject all touches except for S-Pen tap, whether in air or water. Isn't that the reason you can draw with your palm on the phone?

That is correct but being in water the screen will register it as multiple touches and start going crazy. Being able to disable touch input will prevent that from happening and then only allowing pen input.
I ended up searching how to do it on the Note 5 (this is where I first found this feature) and found the app called GMD S pen control which allows you to set up an s pen gesture which will enable and disable touch input. The only issue is needs to be rooted. Going to test it later and hope it will work.

Nexus 7 touchscreen dead spots

So i've noticed a very strange issue with my Nexus 7. If I wake the tablet up while touching the screen I get some very strange touchscreen behavior. It's almost as if there are dead areas on the touchscreen that don't respond to touch. If I put it back to sleep and wake it up without touching the screen the issue is gone. I've made a youtube video demonstrating the issue but I can't post the link yet since I haven't had 10 posts yet. If someone PMs me I will message them the link so that they can post it to this thread.
Has anybody else experienced this issue?
I'm having the same issue. I noticed it while typing.

Any specific areas that are less responsive? I wonder if there's a touchscreen calibration app for the Nexus. I know there are for other devices.

+1 Definitely noticing this. It appears to occur randomly and inconsistently in different regions. The same region will not go dead again, necessarily. It seems as though the screen simply does not register those touches.

It seems to be towards the center most of the time and the dead zone appears to vary in size. It's possible the dead spot may center around whatever part of the screen was touched when waking the device. I'll have to do some more testing to see if that is the case.

Just got mine and it was sitting outside in the heat and the touchscreen was not responding well when I first turned it. After it cooled off and installed the update every thing is working fine.
Here is a video from the OP. He asked me to post it for him.
Is it possible that the capacitance of the screen is calibrated upon wake or something? Not even sure if possible, but it's a thought.
Edit: a drawing app may allow you to demonstrate a little easier.
I don't know if my issue is related but scrolling is totally inconsistent on my n7. Usually when I swipe it'll work correctly but one out of five times a swipe will be registered as a tap. This gets really annoying when you're trying to scroll but end up clicking something instead. Wonder if my n7 is defective.

I don't have my N7 yet so I can't test it out for you but that's definitely weird. Can someone with an N7 try to duplicate the issue?

I've also seen this happen on occasion when I trigger the issue. Swipes will sometimes register as clicks...
A good way to confirm the dead spot is to download a drawing program and see if there are breaks when you try to draw a straight line. Even though I can replicate the dead spot when scrolling, everything seems fine in the drawing program.

This is an Android problem as far as I am concerned. All of my android devices have typed funky while charging.

I tried this out in two drawing apps and got different results. In "Draw Free" when drawing vertical lines my line would stop at the beginning of the "dead" spot and pick up again on the other side of the "dead" spot. I could not replicate the issue when drawing vertical lines in the "Picasso" drawing app.
Not seeing this issue on my Nexus 7. Not very helpful in tracking the problem, but I figured it was worth mentioning that this doesn't seem to be global. I'll post again if I manage to replicate the issue.
I enabled show touches in developer options when it started happening, and I saw ghost touches nearing the middle left side of the screen when nearing areas with dead spots.
Seems like a grounding issue internally causing the touch driver to short in some places.

If it is due to a internal grounding issue I don't think it will be as simple as a software fix
I am on the fence on whether I should try and get mine swapped out with a new one at GameStop...At a minimum I am going to try and call google support at some point today and get their take on the situation.
I would definitely swap it out.
Hello to all. I don't have an Nexus 7 but i do have Nexus S and i noticed from some time when i take out the phone from my pocket if i touch the screen and then turn it on the display was not responsive on touch but did not make some tests to see if the touch before turning on the screen was the exact problem. Now i saw this thread and tried the "pointer location" in Developer options and got this:
Turning off the screen.
Put my finger on a chosen spot.
Turn on the screen.
Unlock.
Try to draw a line passing through the exact same place where my finger was when i turned on the screen.
The line get to the point and then make a half circle around the spot or it break the line and then continue after the point where my finger was.
After turning off and on the display again the non responding spot disapear.
Sorry for my bad english
I too am having this problem.
I bought one at Sam's because i was sick of waiting on the play store....now I'm trying to decide if i should take delivery in the hopes that the touchscreen bug is only on some...

Touchscreen or Software Issue?

Hi guys! I just upgrade from a Nexus 5 to S6 Edge. I am having an issue with this new phone not sure if it is affecting everyone or just me... :/
I am having an issue to swipe on some applications. One of the application is Swiftkey. I find it very hard to swipe to delete whole word. (You need to have Swiftly Flow disabled.) My music player (ZPlayer) i also hard it hard to swipe to skip songs as well. Is it just me or everyone is having this issue? I have used those touchscreen tester application and find my touchscreen to be fine.

Hey man, I'm having the same problem, definitely a software issue as I tested the screen via *#0*# and it's working.
Any updates on your end?

No solution so far but just living with it... I am surprised that this matter is not noticed by many users yet. :/
Had a problem with swipes being interrupted and taps registering multiple times. Got the screen replaced through warranty and the problem is gone. The problem seemed to be caused by pressure making the digitizer make contact with some other part causing erratic touch response.

Spen problems

Anyone else experiencing spen glitchy behavior? Example I'll be hovering the pen over the screen and it'll scroll or select things without me touching the screen and sometimes it won't register the spen touching the screen when I actually try to scroll, or I'll use the square app at work and when my clients need to sign the screen it'll register the pen before even touching the screen. I really like the spen feature but at this point it's too unreliable to even use, is this normal behavior? My wife's note 8 exhibits the same behavior. Tmo note 8 and we both factory restored before setting up and did clean install no transfer data crap.
do you have a screen protector ?
No not me works great and I use my Spen everyday.

No I do not, my finger touches are fine, it's only when I use the spen does it act glitchy, do you think it's defective?
No issues with mine on Verizon, with a screen protector.

Are you using a case with a magnetic kick stand?
My guess is yes.. can't use that with the Note's digitizer as the S-pen tech is magnetic based
If this is not the case (pun intended) then you probably have a faulty S-pen or Digitizer

No just a regular super slim case, it's so annyoing as it only exhibits the problem sometimes not always , I guess I'll have to take it back
You're not using a magnetic car mount either, right?

I do in the car but I noticed this issue immediately after first spen use and I didn't have a magnetic car mount yet, so I don't think they are related and I don't use the spen when I'm in the car
Some of the Same
I also absolutely love the S Pen and I've had the note line for years. This time around with the Note 8 I'm experiencing a weird glitch that's happening with Google products ie Google Chrome Google app Google Maps. Especially when I use the Google app to read different articles. When I open the articles it will literally freeze and not recognize any touch. However if I open that article with my finger and scrolled just a little bit with my finger then I don't suffer the same problem but if I initiate scrolling with the S Pen it freezes every time. This is really frustrating to the point where I have to force close the app to get it to respond at all.... Google and Samsung please figure this out!!!! It really is maddening!!!
At least Spen works with no issue on my phone. I use it pretty often for making notes and also I found it faster and convenient to write in chat messages..
Try changing the nib. I had similar problems which seem to have gone after a nib change, maybe coincidental.
No problem on mine at all. See if you can borrow spen from somebody and test with different pen maybe? Also I would reset the phone and test again, before sending it back.
I exchanged the phone and so far it's been good, fingers crossed
Are you maybe triggering some of the events and tools that the S-pen does without touching the screen? One place this first "caught" me off guard was reading email. When you hover just of the screen it gives you choices and can do actions. There are also scroll choices in Chrome that fire up by hovering.
Just to make sure, I suggest watching
.
If it isn't behaving like in the video and you know you aren't triggering hover events, then I would definitely get it replaced.
I can't understand why third party case makers continue making cases with magnets in them for our Note series. It usually causes issues with the S-Pen. Like, a foldable stand can just be designed to "click" in place when not in use. You don't need a magnet for that. And for the wallet type cases they can just use velcro or something to clip it back into place without a magnet.
Any update? I also sent my phone in for repair of a similar issue and when I got it back, it seems like nothing was fixed. Samsung wrote that they "replaced cosmetic" whatever that means?
I had a similar issue with my note 7, as the recall started and I refused to surrender my note7, claiming warranty was not an option, I bought a spen, and, that solved it, to this day works fine, in this case with a note 8, you must go and claim warranty or, try with some one else's spen to sort the problem out
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately in my case it seems like the s pen is not the issue. I've gone into a Best Buy and used their pen and I still encounter the same issue :/

I had the same problem when searching with Google and the result was shown in Chrome. Using the SPen and the site hang. Using my finger no problem. I then changed from Samsung Internet Browser to Chrome as default browser. The problem was gone.

Air command starts-up during startup even when the spen is docked

I am a first time Note 8 & Samsung user. So far I am have been using Nexus device with Google Android. I am using a SM-N950F with android 8.0.0.
After playing around with the newly purchased device without google id & samsung id, I did a factory reset and set up the phone with my google id and created a samsung id. But on startup I have the air command icon already opened up even though the spen is docked. Also when the screen in locked, on undocking the spen, I don't have the option to take notes (screen off memo) even though the option in enabled. Shouldn't the air command only show up when the spen is not docked?
Now I just formatted the phone and its without google or samsung id. I still face the issue. What could be the issue effecting a fresh install without any extra apps?
Even in safe mode, I am having the same issue.
Is my spen having some issue? Is there some diagnostic tool to figure it out?
That sounds really not good. Did you feel a vibration feedback when you pull the s pen in or out? There should also be a swipe noise audible
Edit:
But before you set the Google account and add a Samsung account it was working?
Gesendet von meinem SM-N950F mit Tapatalk
1. Did you buy new or used? Authorized seller? Are you sure is genuine Note 8?
2. Could be defective sensor which detects presence of S-Pen. (the little lever one could kill with Note 5 by putting S-pen in slot backwards...)
As suggested by Logel, check for the feedback effects (sound & vibration) when removing the S-pen, ensuring those options are enabled in S-pen menu.
Its a brand new device and I did manage to find the issue. Its rather hilarious issue.
I found this post at Samsung forum which actually helped me out:
I haven't experienced this, but are you guys using cases with a magnetic clasp? That can interfere with the S-Pen.

I actually bought a protective case with a flap which has a magnetic clasp, that was the culprit.

Note 9 S pen

Hello everyone,
I would like to know if anyone experience any issues while using their S pen? At times I would use my S pen to crop a picture but I noticed it would still move even if the S pen does not touch the screen it's hoovering over , also if I write a Note on my screen it will trail (if that makes sense). I tried syncing it again which fixes those issues but it seems like a temporary fix.
