Hello everyone,
I would like to know if anyone experience any issues while using their S pen? At times I would use my S pen to crop a picture but I noticed it would still move even if the S pen does not touch the screen it's hoovering over , also if I write a Note on my screen it will trail (if that makes sense). I tried syncing it again which fixes those issues but it seems like a temporary fix.
Do you have a magnet close by the phone? It interferes with the spen tracking

Thanks for your response and no I do not have any magnet close by the phone.

Starting a new thread since I could not find any existing thread on this and it is quite surprising since this is a widespread issue and for the same reason Samsung service here in Melbourne even refused to acknowledge this is an issue! There logic seemingly being if the issue is present in the demo unit in the store as well, it is not an issue! Vodafone has also refused to honor the warranty, even though it is in the first month of my contract and they should be replacing the handset and dealing with Samsung, and have instead told me to provide them with an acknowledgement from Samsung stating it is an issue! Talk about deadlocks!
Now coming to the issue, I have found out that there are sensitivity issues when using the S-Pen on the bottom right and left corners of the screen. There are issue on the top part of the screen as well but they arent as serious. I would also request you to check the same on your device and report back if you are also facing the same.
To check, first get into diagnostics mode by dialing *#0*# and then go to the S-Pen tab.
1. As you can see in the video, the bottom right and left corners have definite and serious issues with S-Pen sensitivity. I found this out, and it is also a use case and one of the major reasons that I went for Galaxy Note 5, while taking a screen grab from the middle of the screen right until the bottom right corner. I just could not do it. As soon as the S Pen reaches near the corner, the sensitivity issue makes sure that input isn't recognized. Not only this, even when it manages to identify the touch, the tracking is random with the S-Pen having a mind of its own.
2. The second issue is while drawing on the top part of the screen with the S-Pen but this one is not as serious as the first one. You can see in the video that S-Pen loses sensitivity in one particular area of the screen. This is easily corrected though, by pressing the S-Pen harder on the screen.
This is apart from the lag and slowness issues that rear their ugly head every once in a while and in a phone which runs an Octa Core CPU with a whopping 4GB of RAM. This is my first Samsung in a long long time and it has left me disappointed again exactly like it did in the past whenever I bought a Samsung phone. To me the level of polish of the hardware on a device costing as much as this is simply not acceptable. What are your thought? Please report in this thread if you are facing the same issue as I am with the S-Pen.

I have multiple stand-alone S Pens and don't experience what you're describing with them or the one included with the device.

Strange because I could replicate it on all the demo devices in the store. That is their reasoning for refusing the warranty as well.
I'll say this, the included pen is more responsive on the display than pens that are pre-Note 5 so something in the pen and/or display has changed.
Does it mean mine has a problem then? I am wondering if anyone else can also confirm the same?
I can confirm the bottom left and right corner of my note 5 behave just like OP's does... but wouldn't have found out if he didn't mention it

Thanks Alex. I found the issue because I could not take a screenshot which finished near the bottom corner of the screen. Now smart select is a headline feature of the phone and this hadrware oversight to be is just not acceptable. The Samsung service would not acknowledge it as an issue let alone do something about it. May be it is only on the first batch of phone. Who knows?
I checked my phone (SM-N9208 TW, mfg: will add later) and the bottom corners have poor tracking with the hover point flying off the screen when held above.
Overall this issue shouldn't affect the usability of the phone if you rarely use these areas since it's still possible though difficult to use the s-pen there.
Edit: I re-tested with my phone flat and s-pen vertical*. The s-pen can be used on the very bottom corners with precise movements, so I don't think will affect usability for most people most of the time.
*Having the s-pen on an angle can affect the tracking significantly as seen in your video. I think the only solution would be to modify the s-pen to track at the very tip. This would probably make the tip non-replaceable and/or more complex and expensive. If someone has time, try using the s-pen without a tip and see if/how it tracks.
Update: I tested a SM-N920W8 in store and it had the same corner issue.
I complained to Vodafone again and they decided to take the phone back. Back to trusty properly working iPhone 6s Plus 64GB. My last Samsung device no matter what the specs. I wouldn't be interested in one even if it will have a gazillion core CPU and few petabytes of RAM.
I have the same issue. Can anyone else, note 5 users confirm about this issue. (Bottom right hover issue)
I dont't face that problem
Edit: here is a screenshot
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5LZ1p_SFZ3faTFJNzBzZGlnbzA/view?usp=docslist_api
Mine does it a little bit.
It still passes the test so I believe it's within spec. I honestly don't see it being a warranty issue.

Sometimes, it is the Cover magnet.
Sometimes, it is the Cover magnet. . Try to remove you phone from it and try the s pen in the touch area in question. It worked for me with in a leather flip cover. The same for the s note stopping error message.

if you have magnetic casing will get such problems ....
or fake s-pen need to replace with original or better fake quality
My stylus is overly sensitive; so much that I can't write properly. All text is in continuation even when I lift the stylus off for whitespace. I even followed the article on adjusting the sensitivity of the S Pen by removing the click-button cover and adjusting the Potentiometer. However, the note 4 s pen is entierly different as it doesn't have any Potentiometer under the click button. Link to article:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2191333
What annoys me most is that I never had this issue before I flew overseas last month. I started experiencing this issue after I came back and it has rendered my s pen useless. Has anyone found a way to adjust Potentiometer on the new S spen yet (it might be located under top cap but i'm not sure how to open it).

I am having this same problem. Did you ever find a fix for it? Thank you!
Yes confirmation of problem
I found the same problem. If you try to draw a square in the S pen test mode you cannot draw a square in the bottom left or right corner. The square will turn into some kind of strange wiggle shape.
I live in Malaysia and went to the official Samsung head office service center and they confirmed this is a problem with all Note 5 models and the lady showed me her own personal Note 5 which had the same problem (actually worse than mine).
The service technicians said they do not know the reason for this problem. But as an electrical engineer I suspect there is some sensors in those areas which cause interference with the S Pen.
Hi everyone,
So I got my brand new note 5 yesterday. It's a gift actually. I love it till now specially cause I have been using a note 3 since quite some time now so the note 5 seems like quite an upgrade.
The issue is that my spen isn't working properly. I don't know why but it requires too much pressure in order to write something. The hover feature and the button work perfectly but when you want to use it to write or to scroll or when I want to touch it to the screen in order to select something or draw etc it requires too much pressure. I have tried changing the nibs but that doesn't solve it. I used the spen on my note 3 in order to check if it was the phone or the spen and the note 3's spen worked fine on my note 5 while the spen of note 5 required a lot of pressure in order to write on the note 3. I even checked another note 5s spen today on my note 5 and it worked fine. So I'm sure it's my spen.
In the previous versions of the spen, removing the button on the spen showed a small screw which was used to adjust the sensitivity of the spen but in this one that sensitivity is not present beneath the spens button and removing the button on note 5s spen shows up nothing and instead ends up removing the button which I then had to put back using some scotch tape.
So does anyone of you have any idea how to adjust the sensitivity on the note 5s spen because I don't want to spend $35-50 on purchasing a new spen.
Thank you for reading through this long as essay but in my defense, I didn't know how else to explain the whole problem. Thanks in advance.
I am having a hardware issue with my phone. I was wondering if there might be a software work-around to it. The sensor that detects the removal of my s-pen fires off randomly. I've set all of the settings so nothing happens (no air command, no vibration or noise) when these misfires happen, but it still wakes up the phone randomly. The misfires do not happen when the pen is removed. I tried a new pen but that didn't help - so the issue is on the phone.
So, I was wondering if there is some software solution that will trick the phone into thinking that the pen is always out - basically disable the signal from the sensor. I opened the phone and I found the magnetic sensor that triggers this but I really don't want to remove or replace it. It would be hard if not impossible since it's right on the board. I know this is an odd problem and I've not seen any reports of anything similar, but I was hoping that there might be some ideas out there. Thanks for your help!
PS: My note 4 is rooted.

Thanks. I think I fixed it. I had replaced my screen some time ago. The adhesive had become undone and it was pulling away from the board. I opened it up and glued it down. Seems to have worked.
Anyone else experiencing spen glitchy behavior? Example I'll be hovering the pen over the screen and it'll scroll or select things without me touching the screen and sometimes it won't register the spen touching the screen when I actually try to scroll, or I'll use the square app at work and when my clients need to sign the screen it'll register the pen before even touching the screen. I really like the spen feature but at this point it's too unreliable to even use, is this normal behavior? My wife's note 8 exhibits the same behavior. Tmo note 8 and we both factory restored before setting up and did clean install no transfer data crap.
do you have a screen protector ?
No not me works great and I use my Spen everyday.

No I do not, my finger touches are fine, it's only when I use the spen does it act glitchy, do you think it's defective?
No issues with mine on Verizon, with a screen protector.

Are you using a case with a magnetic kick stand?
My guess is yes.. can't use that with the Note's digitizer as the S-pen tech is magnetic based
If this is not the case (pun intended) then you probably have a faulty S-pen or Digitizer

No just a regular super slim case, it's so annyoing as it only exhibits the problem sometimes not always , I guess I'll have to take it back
You're not using a magnetic car mount either, right?

I do in the car but I noticed this issue immediately after first spen use and I didn't have a magnetic car mount yet, so I don't think they are related and I don't use the spen when I'm in the car
Some of the Same
I also absolutely love the S Pen and I've had the note line for years. This time around with the Note 8 I'm experiencing a weird glitch that's happening with Google products ie Google Chrome Google app Google Maps. Especially when I use the Google app to read different articles. When I open the articles it will literally freeze and not recognize any touch. However if I open that article with my finger and scrolled just a little bit with my finger then I don't suffer the same problem but if I initiate scrolling with the S Pen it freezes every time. This is really frustrating to the point where I have to force close the app to get it to respond at all.... Google and Samsung please figure this out!!!! It really is maddening!!!
At least Spen works with no issue on my phone. I use it pretty often for making notes and also I found it faster and convenient to write in chat messages..
Try changing the nib. I had similar problems which seem to have gone after a nib change, maybe coincidental.
No problem on mine at all. See if you can borrow spen from somebody and test with different pen maybe? Also I would reset the phone and test again, before sending it back.
I exchanged the phone and so far it's been good, fingers crossed
Are you maybe triggering some of the events and tools that the S-pen does without touching the screen? One place this first "caught" me off guard was reading email. When you hover just of the screen it gives you choices and can do actions. There are also scroll choices in Chrome that fire up by hovering.
Just to make sure, I suggest watching
.
If it isn't behaving like in the video and you know you aren't triggering hover events, then I would definitely get it replaced.
I can't understand why third party case makers continue making cases with magnets in them for our Note series. It usually causes issues with the S-Pen. Like, a foldable stand can just be designed to "click" in place when not in use. You don't need a magnet for that. And for the wallet type cases they can just use velcro or something to clip it back into place without a magnet.
Any update? I also sent my phone in for repair of a similar issue and when I got it back, it seems like nothing was fixed. Samsung wrote that they "replaced cosmetic" whatever that means?
I had a similar issue with my note 7, as the recall started and I refused to surrender my note7, claiming warranty was not an option, I bought a spen, and, that solved it, to this day works fine, in this case with a note 8, you must go and claim warranty or, try with some one else's spen to sort the problem out
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately in my case it seems like the s pen is not the issue. I've gone into a Best Buy and used their pen and I still encounter the same issue :/

I had the same problem when searching with Google and the result was shown in Chrome. Using the SPen and the site hang. Using my finger no problem. I then changed from Samsung Internet Browser to Chrome as default browser. The problem was gone.
I just received my Note 10 Lite and I notice a minor issue... on the bottom right corner, ~5mm right above the speaker hole there's a slight inaccurate with S-Pen drawing/pointing, has anyone noticed this issue? There's a small spot that my S-Pen just "go around" it.
My theory is that this phone's speaker magnet is improperly shielded, the magnetic field has messed with the Wacom panel receiving the field from the pen, can anyone else confirm it?
would be ideal to get a screenshot or something pointing to the exact location for someone to try and replicate it. i'd be happy to confirm if this is the case.
I confirm...same is happening with me..i think the cost cutting method of Samsung is responsible for this. So annoying.

Is not because of cost cutting or anything like that. Is pretty normal for this kind of inaccuracy to happen in smaller devices like phones. You can search and you see that other phone models (Galaxy Note models) and even some tables also have this problem.

Pretty sure it's a piezo driver, no magnets.
The speaker likely isn't the cause. Try calibrating the screen.
Clear system cache, hard reboot, etc.
It could be a firmware or display flaw as well.
It shouldn't do that... no issues like that on my 10+
