I would love to keep using Textra as my default message app, but it cannot send Live Messages on my Note 8 (AT&T). It errors out all the time. So I tried to change the MMS setting from "system" to "legacy" as some people have suggested. It also errors out while sending Live Messages.
So I switched back to the default message app, and it worked really quickly.
Does anyone have this issue with Textra sending Live Messages? Any more suggestions?
Thanks.
Gifs, live messages work just fine on T-Mobile. Its a carrier issue.
Reach out to your carrier and express your concerns.
Google messenger can receive gifs just fine, but may not work to send them.

I have had the same problem with Textra. It is a file size issue that I havent been able to figure out. It will send a regular live message (smaller) but wont send one with the popping, glowing words as they are bigger in size. I have tried switching the carrier limit, but that didnt work. As with you when I switch to the Samsung messaging app it sends fine.
Thanks for the replies.
Can't reach out to the carrier since the default app works fine.
But, as you all know that Textra is way better than the default app in every other way. So, it would be nice to have it working. I've submitted a help request to Textra, but I thought that I'd get help here faster, if there is one...
The carrier is the reason these MMS type messages work or not. They have to have the infrastructure in place to allow MMS (aka live messages AKA gifs AKA video messages )
T-Mobile have the backend to send and receive these types of messages. Other carriers dont yet have this functionality (or its not yet "turned on") which is why some people can send receive these and others can't.
I've had the problem with my unlocked Note 8 on Verizon. I can only get GIFs to work receiving (sending was always fine) by loading either Verizon's terrible Messages+ app, or using Textra and setting the MSS > MSS Behavior to Legacy, then rebooting. Called Samsung, they said it's a Verizon issue; called Verizon, they said they don't have any information on the Note 8's messaging to help with a fix. I call shenanigans, since Verizon needs to test a device before they allow it out into the wild on their network, but maybe that's just me being crazy.
So I observed something today on this issue. When I used the default app to send a live message, it compresses the crap out of it, and also reduced the background pixel dimension (original is 600X600, the sent version was 300X300). I also found that AT&T allows up to 1MB of MMS per send. So I checked the original file, and the size is about 5.7MB. I checked the one that was sent out by the default app, and it is at 326KB. That is a damn big difference!
From this, I am thinking that Textra's compression capability might not be as fast or good as the default app for this to work.
As a loyal Textra enthusiast, I would love answers too. Maybe Textra needs work on their end? Let's contact the developer.
Textra does not compress the live message like it can with other MMS pics. The standard app as stated above does compress heavily.
EE in the UK has a limit of either 100kb or 300kb (my MMS messages only send to 100kb!) therefore textra must do some compression but clearly it can't to the live messages.
So my take on this is Textra won't currently work unless they put in a fix to allow Live messages.
I've now switched to the samsung messaging app for the time being.

yup thats my take on the issue - its a textra problem
Hi Guys, I filed an issue with Textra. A member of their team contacted me and said that they will look into this next week.
I went into settings, MMS, and changed the file to carrier has no limit. Live messages send fine. On TMO.

When you say that you changed the file to Carrier, what setting are you talking about? I dont have a setting in MMS called file.

Gotcha!
I have tried playing with the file size on mine and even tried playing with the System and Legacy options along with the APN settings and it will just not send. Works just fine with the default messaging application but not with Textra.
I hate it too, I would so much rather use Textra.
Just wondering what phone company is everyone using that is having issues? Mine is AT&T
Mine is AT&T.
Their help website says that the MMS limit is 1MB, so that is where I have set mine.
I have managed to send one live message through Textra, but it was a super simple thing. Size must have been really small. Anyway, the app team will look at this next week.
Google's Messages app won't send Live Messages either. Am on T-Mobile.
Any updates from the devs?

This worked perfectly for me, problem solved. Thanks man.
For those on TMO and using Textra, I've changed my MMS setting to no limit as well as to Legacy but Live Messages still not working. If I send Live Messages through Textra it appears to send but recipients still aren't receiving. I've tested with a few co-workers. So those of you on TMO that says it's working have you confirmed that they are actually being "received"?

I can send MMS messages on AT&T. Is there any fix?
Related
I've been having a lot of problems with MMS since picking up the Active and switching to AT&T.
I usually use Handcent, but right now it's pretty worthless when it comes to group messages or receiving a picture. in both the stock messaging app and Handcent settings I have it set to group messages, and to automatically download. when I receive an MMS, though, I still have to click on download (and they won't download at all in Handcent even after clicking).
say I receive a group text from someone and 3 other people respond. both apps now display 4 different entries, one for each person. if I open each individual's thread and click download (again just in the stock app) the messages will be removed from that individual's thread and then be added to a group thread.
this is pretty frustrating, and I really want it solved. is this an AT&T issue (I was on VZW riding the Droid train before) or something with the phone?
a little update on this:
sending of MMS is also way less than ideal, either not sending at all, or taking a really really long time. I tried to send a picture earlier and it took 40 minutes before it finally went through. my searching of the interwebs leads me to believe it's perhaps an APN issue? it would be strange if the default settings out of the box prevent it from working, though. anyone else have an issue with this?
MMS is horrible for me on Handcent, too. I have to open the stock Messaging app just to download an MMS and sometimes that doesn't work, either. I also tried AT&T Messages, but it won't ever even setup correctly.

I'm not sure if this is a moto X specific thing, but I've not had this problem on my previous phones.
So I noticed when I send a MMS to a friend (i'm on t-mobile , he's also on t-mobile with an htc one though i'm doubing that matter) he says it will say the image is too big and can't be sent or something like that. or that it can't be received.
I google about this a bit, and i saw a little bit of talk of it being a bug in the phone, and that you can't send MMS when on wifi but it would work when not on wifi (not sure how that makes any sense either). I saw some other posts about how if you send a message attached via gmail THEN send an MMS then MMS would start working , which also makes no sense to me as that seems so unrelated.
So previous to this phone i had a droid razr m (was on verizon before and even unlocked it for t-mobile for a bit) and i remember on that phone, when i sent an mms, sometimes the phone would say somethign like "this image will be resized before sending". the moto X never says that so is that a bug in the moto x? since i know that is an MMS size limit, but this phone never seems to prompt to resize.
anyway has anyone else had this issue?

YES, I have the same issue as well! Finally I found someone else that has the same problem as me haha.
When I first got my Moto X it worked just fine but recently I tried sending pictures to friends who also have T-Mobile and they all say that they can't see the picture because it says it is "too big", so along the same lines as the problem that you're having.
I going to call T-Mobile tomorrow and see if its maybe something on their side because when I check the details of the picture/message I sent, the size of the picture is under 1000KB (1000KB = 1MB which is the limit for sending MMS through T-Mobile, anything over 1MB gets stopped on their network).
Quick update:
I called T-Mobile an a representative told me that there were two ways of sending an MMS, specifically a picture, with the Moto X:
1. Stock Messaging App > Thread > Attach(Paper Clip icon) > Pictures. Then you select a picture from your gallery
2. Stock Messaging App > Thread > Attach(Paper Clip icon) > Capture Picture.
With the representative on the line, we tried both ways and figured out that option 1. works while 2. does not.
The conclusion that we came to is that if you capture a picture immediately, then it takes a full size picture and DOES NOT re-size it for MMS at all. HOWEVER, if you take a picture beforehand and then add it to a message from the gallery, it DOES re-size it.
I plan to call Motorola tomorrow and tell them about this issue so that hopefully they can either send out a fix or add it to an overall OTA update.
Hopefully I can contribute something to this forum haha

Same issue here. I am using the stock messaging app. I am on Verizon and am having trouble sending to T-Mobile. Haven't tried to other Verizon phones yet. I tried it over hangouts and had no issues, but then again Hangouts is using wifi.. Please let me know if you guys figure this one out!

Eh, I've tried that and GO sms app and multiple other ones back when I had a Samsung Mesmerize. Maybe that's why I grew favor to the stock AOSP app compared to the Samsung and other third party apps. O well.
Quick troubleshooting update: Ever since we got the update to Kit Kat and the introduction of using Hangouts to SMS, I've stayed with the stock app instead of Hangouts just because I like it better. However, I will switch to Hangouts just to see if I can send pictures successfully through that. Crossing my fingers this will work and will report back if anything improves
P.S. sorry for the long absence; I've been busy with school and haven't had time to post
Hey guys, I have come back baring good things.
So I've been using Hangouts for a couple of days and MMS and picture messaging works. I can send a picture to any T-Mobile number and they can download it and view it .
The only problem that I have experienced is that sometimes I get double-texts from a friend (but that can just be due to a faulty BlackBerry ;P).
Looks like Hangouts is the way to go for now

I've read the same issue in another thread. and the 2 fixes you mentioned came up:
1. people saying using hangouts fixes the issue
2. People saying attaching to MMS works and capturing a photo doesn't.
It's a bug with the Kit-Kat AOSP messaging apk. Other phones have this issue as well. I'm assuming that Google removed the picture compression code in an effort to get people to use Hangouts for SMS/MMS as Hangouts will compress down the pic w/o notifying you.

same issue in Hangouts running the pre-installed and latest version. Also you need evidence to back that up if it's really a known bug and not a rumor.

Just a quick update:
I've been using Hangouts for a quite a while now and have not had a problem since. I have nothing against Hangouts but I would like to have a dedicated MMS/SMS application because I don't really want Hangouts to be checking for messages ever so often.
I have unlimited MMS/SMS and no unlimited data anyways
Hi guys,
I have been experiencing failed SMS sending using Google hangouts after multiple SMS sends. However, I was still able to receive SMS and use my data. I called Google but all they said to do was restart the phone, remove Sim card from phone or factory reset.
I tried restarting my phone and removing the Sim card but no luck.
What I did to fix this issue was go to settings, under wireless and networks, select more, then mobile networks, then network operators, then select automatically.
This seems to have worked.
I just changed the default SMS app. Go SMS, works perfectly fine. I think the integration with hangouts is stupid.

Good to know, didnt want to spend the moola on it and not have it work properly.
My reply may be meaningless, but I remember when I had my Gnex, certain messages like MMS would not work. It wasn't until I changed my phone to a Galaxy S2* on my account that I was able to get messaging working. I read somewhere, my phone needed certain information (APN stuff) for MMS. Will it work for this? Probably not and this post is probably stupid.
*T-mobile didn't have the Gnex in the list so I chose the closest model to mine
This sucks I'm still having the issue. Anyone else having the same problem? I am on Rogers.

iMessage works between phone numbers and Apple account (email). You don't need any registrations and it will automaticly detect if recipient can receive iMessage (based on phone number) - if not, it will send SMS.
If you want to use hangouts, you must register to Google+ and you must know recipient's gmail address, because it can't detect based on phone number etc. From my contacts, only 5 - 10% uses Hangouts. For reference, 90% my contacts uses Viber and about 70% uses Whatapp. Both Viber and Whatsapp are miles ahead of Hangouts IMO.
And another thing: I made mistake and hid my GF from "People you hangout with" list and now Im unable to unhide her. Now I can't see if she is online and if I can send her message via Hangouts. For that reason, I send her only SMS.
Just look how many Apple users uses iMessage and how many Android users uses Hangouts.

Hello,
I am using a BLU Vivo XL with metroPCS service and I am having a two MMS issues: 1) Every MMS is duplicated, and 2) MMS service is very unreliable over WiFi. Also, I have 1 sms issue where my messages from some contacts do not thread/aggreagate correctly. For example, I send a sms to ContactA and when they respond, it is in a new thread, I can then continue the conversation in that new thread.
I have updated my APN information to the t-mobile settings. I have had a "phone reset" by a metroPCS CSR over chat. Any ideas on how to rectify these issues?
Similar Problem
I have a similar problem on AT&T. I get duplicate group messages while using google messenger. It only happens with group messages and is fine with normal MMS. Sorry I was unable to help, but you are not alone.

I'm trying to use my BLU Vivo XL with Chomp Messenger (AT&T). It seems to work other than it won't play any notification sounds no matter which one I choose. It's not blinking the message led either.
I was having the same issue on T-Mobile, my solution was to go through each contact and make sure there were no spaces in any contact numbers. Example: 1 (123) 456-7890 would give me problems, but 1(123)456-7890 worked just fine.

Exactly the same with me on AT&T. Any time someone sends me an MMS, I get 2 pictures instead of just one. Crazy. I also get the issue where I send a SMS, and then when they reply, it starts a new thread instead of appearing in the one I just sent. Weird. Let me know if you figure this out.
I seem to have found the CAUSE of this problem, but I have yet to find a solution. I had the same problem as the OP when receiving MMS. Instead of getting one picture, I would always get 2. No matter who was sending to me. Also, as the OP stated, "messages from some contacts do not thread/aggreagate correctly. For example, I send a sms to ContactA and when they respond, it is in a new thread, I can then continue the conversation in that new thread."
I remembered that when I got this phone, I replaced the stock messaging app with Google Messenger (I thought the stock messenger was lacking). I had a hunch that the 2 messaging apps were somehow conflicting with each other. So I deleted google messenger and had my daughter send me a picture. Boom. Problem fixed. I received only one picture from her using the stock messenger app. So I re-installed the Google Messenger app from the play store and had her send me the same picture again. This time, I received TWO pictures. I have no idea how to fix this behavior as you cannot "disable" the stock messenger app. I probably could try a different messenger app other than Google Messenger, but that's the one that I like. Anyone have any ideas?
EDIT: I deleted Google Messenger and tried a different messenger just to test, and it worked as it should. So it must me some kind of incompatibility with Google Messenger, and I'm guessing other messenger apps.

Yup, there appears to be a non-stock messenger app problem. Both Google Messenger and Textra were resulting in duplicate MMS.
I saw this thread and thought I would jump on here real quick. My GF also has metro PCS and she keeps trying to swap the default messaging client out with say GO SMS pro. And whenever she gets a new text she doesnt get any audible notifications. And the LED doesnt light up so she has to manually check her phone all the time. Has anyone else experienced that? Have a fix?

Phone type: Blu Life One X on Android 5.1 (whatever happened to Blu promises for a droid version update? Word of caution: Don't believe Blue marketing 'promises'. Nice phone, but don't buy it unless its the OS you are willing to live with until your next phone)
Ever since google began sending love notes about its texting app becoming obsolete and I began using a different texting app (forget which one), I started having problems with duplicate messages being received. Last night I installed Textra and thought the problem was finally gone. Today while looking at the same texts received during testing last night, I suddenly have duplicate texts from last night for some messages (they were single copies last night). Really bizarre. I have also noticed that with Textra, the double text replies seem to now be only with my group texts.
Reading various threads, I became suspicious that maybe something in the Google contact phone numbers has become corrupted. Sure enough, some of the group contact phone numbers could no longer be easily edited. I messed around with the suspect contact information until I could edit the phone number to its simplest form (from +1 (123) 345-7890 changed to 123-456-7890). Seems to be working now. Will need another day to see if the texting acts up once again.
Now to figure out what is corrupting my Google contact information...
it's the 6.0 marshmallow update ..my Blu Vivo was just fine until i updated my phone i suggest you factory reset your phone.
I had to use 3rd party messaging apps like Textra to be able to send GIFs, but now it seems that since the stock messaging app utilizes Live Messages by converting them into GIFs, we can now send GIFs in general without size limits. Can anyone confirm this? I would love to be able to take full advantage of Live Messages and sending random GIFs without size limits using just the native messaging app.
Lol that was the first thing I thought of as well during the conference

I had to use 3rd party messaging apps like Textra to be able to send GIFs, but now it seems that since the stock messaging app utilizes Live Messages by converting them into GIFs, we can now send GIFs in general without size limits. Can anyone confirm this? I would love to be able to take full advantage of Live Messages and sending random GIFs without size limits using just the native messaging app.

I just watched a Youtube video where the guy explained that with Live Message you can create a message by writing/drawing with the S-Pen and it converts it to a standardized GIF so any phone can see the animation. It's not like Textra where they have a dedicated link to grab GIFs and attach to your text.
Check this video out:

i've been playing with Live Message on my Note FE with Hangouts; when done, i have to "share the GIF" as a picture versus sending right away to the person i'm texting. seems like a nice feature, not sure how often i would use it tho.
So now it looks like they updated their native messaging app able to send up to 10mb size on the Galaxy s8 series, not sure about lower models. Unfortunately, when using third party keyboards on the native messaging app, the GIFs are still sent as a link unless you download and save them to your phone and send it as an attachment. This is will probably be the same for the Note 8 as well. Why cant they just embed it like the rest? oh well....baby steps I guess. =/
No live messages

This Sucks I got my Note 8 two days ago and you will have to us Textra or another app to send Live Messages. So my question is why include the feature that you can't use with downloading another app on the NOTE 8?
I have the unlocked version of the Note 8 and just sent a live message using the stock messaging app just fine.

Tetra won't compress the image like stock will. In Textra I tried to make an image and it was 9mb, system wouldnt send. Used stock app and it compressed same image to 600kb and sent fine. Tetra or any other app needs to make that adjustment and it doesn't.
I have seen weird behavior with live messages and the stock messaging app. It will play an animation, but often it is truncated, and doesn't run at the proper speed when using the "share" function of live messages. I haven't tried saving them and sending it via an attachment or something else.
Likely something to do with the compression mentioned above I would think.

Same thing here. Using the Note 8 app ports on my FE.

If your sending to anyone who doesn't have a Samsung device on the same carrier as you it compresses the hell out of the message..... Of you send to someone with a Samsung device on the same carrier it uses Samsung's "RCS" and doesn't compresses so like me and my dad send each other cool fully animated ones... But the ones I send to my fiance's iPhone get all pixelated and choppy.... But it's better than nothing. On my s8 any gif over 1mb would fail. Now it just compresses them for me. I'd rather have that than trying to find another app all the time.

Can't you go into settings, and change image size from best available to original? So the images will not be compressed.

I read that if you change the MMS setting in Textra from System to Legacy Live Messages will send. Lots of positive feedback too but it does not work for me on my AT&T N8. Works fine in stock message app and people who received the GIF say it looks fine. They are all iPhone users. I prefer to use Textra. Gifs also send in Yappy SMS app.

Those settings are only for "chat" meaning other ppl with a Samsung phone on the same carrier as you if I'm not mistaken. Because mine is on original and it's the same outcome as I stated before.
I was able to attach the Live Message GIF to Textra once already in the app, then sending to my wife and daughter who also use Textra was fine. Once or twice it came back as failed, but after a retry, it sent. But I really hate that the native messaging app doesn't allow for adding random animated GIFs like it does in Textra.
While I have only used Live Messages on Twitter (actual tweets, not direct messages), and know it can be accessed from the stock Samsung keyboard (which I hate) and Air Command, I believe they can only be sent in apps that allow animated GIF files to be sent. Most likely, with Samsung's stock messaging app, they probably are being sent as MMS messages, unless there's that extended SMS technology (I forgot the actual name), but I'm not sure if that's true because I don't think the carrier I'm on supports that.

I think Gboard can do that through its blue suggestions, but can't really remember because I have that disabled, and I doubt the Samsung keyboard supports that. Even then, I don't like the stock Samsung touch keyboard, for similar reasons to why i have a "stock Android" theme applied on mine.
