I ask because after installing stock MRA58R the contents of my N6 were still visible in Windows Explorer. So I reformatted userdata & cache, and then used the new NRT 2.0.7 to flash MRA58R again - wipe, no root, no recovery, no no-encrypt, just bog-standard install. The "Encrypting device" appeared for literally a few seconds, and now as it's sitting re-installing my apps from Google I can still see the contents of internal memory in Explorer. No USB debug, just a "Use USB for file transfer".
I have a multi-digit PIN on the phone, set up as part of the initialisation process.
I went through all this because my wife's phone was stolen last weekend and it was a wake-up call for me about my data security.
I'm sure I'm being particularly stupid. Can someone please educate me?
Thanks...
And maybe I'm answering my own question...
The contents are visible to me because I entered the device PIN?
Anyone without the PIN gets to see nothing?
And that includes any access via ADB/fastboot?
But is this any different from a non-encrypted device?

It is a method to store data that is only readable with the key used for encryption.
Your pin is something different and is used for access permission of a device.
Thanks, but my understanding is that the device PIN is the encryption key. You can't set encryption without having a device PIN. What else could it possibly be using?
So I guess I still don't understand if having my device encrypted is any better than having a simple PIN-secured unencrypted device. If someone can see my data via bootloader mode or some other back door how secure is it?
If I look at an encrypted file I expect to see hieroglyphics. That's not what I'm seeing here. I see either nothing at all because the device isn't recognised by my PC, or I have full access to the data.
So what effect should I expect to see that is different/more secure than a simple PIN-protected device? What's the actual benefit of encryption?

Ill be honest. Your device is only as secure as the person that steals it. No amount of security has been 100% proven to prevent the data being attainable if they have access to the device its self. While I am not saying the average thieve will be bale to do it but, then all they care about is the device and end up wiping the device and reselling it without a care about the info inside it.

That wouldn't be a good encryption, you usually need at least 256 bits to encrypt a volume. The pin is only to unlock the encryption key that's stored on a separate partition. Also to unlock the phone.
If you stick a USB cable into a phone that's on, it switches to USB charging mode by default, so you need to unlock it to change it to MTP or Camera. If you want to connect as USB debugging, you first must allow the new computer's fingerprint to connect, so you need the pin to unlock the phone again.
If encryption is used correctly, then you must enter your pin to resume boot. But you can just set MTP as default connection in a custom ROM, build it as userdebug that doesn't require ADB fingerprint, and set pin for unlocking lock screen only
Thanks, people. It looks like encryption is pretty well pointless then if any Tom, **** or Harry can just install a new ROM or recovery and get access to the data... Burning my battery for nothing but a lot of security hot air...?
Speaking of which, I've just rebooted my phone and despite having checked the "Require passcode to start Android", which actually did work at least once (meaning I had to enter a PIN 3 times, for Android, SIM and device), this time there was no Android challenge, only SIM & device.
This security really isn't up to the job at all.
That is incorrect. With out knowing the key, as long as you select require pon at boot, the only thing they could do is reformat your phone and continue using it. No matter what, the key to your data is needed to access it.

I really don't get where this comes from?!? It's a very serious security measure, and it's really not its fault if people dynamite holes into the phone's security like using userdebug builds, and having custom recoveries.
The point is, you have to decide if you want a phone open for modding and to use to store sensitive data on it. There isn't a system that really can accommodate both.
But if you don't have any sensitive data on your phone then encrypting is really pointless.
Thanks again, guys.
@scryan - "select require pin at boot" - does this mean the "require PIN before starting Android"? This is what I mentioned I had but now I don't. An extra layer of security disappeared for no reason I can think of, and I see no option to switch it back on, since the only time it was offered to me was during the initial setup. I still have SIM lock and device lock, but more is better, no?
@istperson - I get the trade-off between security and flexibility. I would consider my photos, for example, to be secure data - even if I'm happy showing them to people I know, I don't want strangers poking around in them.
So bottom line - I still see no argument that says that encryption provides something that the PIN doesn't. How exactly is a PIN-protected encrypted phone more secure than a PIN-protected unencrypted phone?
Edit: I found the "require PIN on boot" option in one of the security tabs, and it appears to work. Back to 3 levels of security, but still in the dark about encryption benefits.

If they hit you on the head, take your phone, tear it apart, and remove the sdcard, it won't be readable because of the encryption. If it's unencrypted they can access every data.
But don't store naked selfies on you phone. or in the cloud, then you're safe.
Also the pin to boot doesn't go away by itself without tinkering. Go back to Settings/Security and switch on the Require pin to boot, or whatever it's called.
Basically encryption is how the data is stored on the device. Instead of the normal readable format, its scattered all around in a pattern that requires a key to calculate how to put it all back together.
When you computer goes to read a file, it pulls out a chunk of data, looks at what the right pattern is, then ignores the pieces it doesn't need.
When you phone is running you dont see any of this, because your phone is always in the middle decoding.
If I tried to access your data by circumventing the OS and its checks, all I would see was scrambled randomness.
Decent little wiki entry from arch linux
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Disk_encryption#How_the_encryption_works
Its more aimed at computers, but its the same thing...
"it won't be readable because of the encryption."
That I understand - thanks. I suppose I was just a bit uneasy because it seems a bit too simple to get in, but obviously tinkering with my own device is far simpler than tinkering with someone else's.
I'll put this one to bed now. I'm very grateful for everyone's patience in answering my questions.
Hey guys I recently purchased a used SM-T580 Galaxy Tab off of Amazon and the device came with and FRP lock that I can't seem to figure out how to bypass. I've been on YouTube for the last few days just trying nummerous different methods like the SideSync, OTG, Odin, and Realtek method just to name a few, however none of them are compatible with this tablet. It's very frustrating because I need this tablet working in order to take notes in my college classes. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks.

The tab is compatible with odin, i would recommend flashing twrp, and installing a frp bypass zip, they exist but i don't know where one is, either that or find someone willing to send you a activated twrp backup, you can get to download via home + power + volume down and recovery via home + power + vol up(releasing vol up after samsung shown on the screen)

Also you can try flashing a firmware update in odin from SamMobile
flashing would not help to remove frp there are some other things into that

Thats why a recommended installing a frp bypass zip through twrp first, much more likely to work.
well i m not sure this tab is supported or not bu i cna try to reset frp remortly. if u wish

I was having the same problem, but i figured it out last night. Without OTG cable, Odin, SideSync, Realtek, or a PC. I'd been messing with it for 3 days, so Im not 100% sure of what everything said and i'm definitely not going to relock it to try an duplicate it, but if you've been all over youtube then you've seen methods that require a wifi connection, (I found it easiest to use my phone's wifi hotspot) you disconnect your hotspot or unplug your router immediately when it says checking for software update, which appears after clicking accept on the privacy policy. (Again it's easier to just turn off the hotspot than to unplug your router" When done correctly it souls say "couldn't sign in" and then the next screen will either ask you to set up time and date or it asks you to add a name to the tablet (can't remember which is first) then asks to set up a screen lock passcode or pattern (set up either one), after doing all this 100 times I noticed it asked me if i wanted to set up a IMAP/POP3 account to use within the Gmail app (which I'd been skipping) but for some reason it didn't give me this option every time. You have to be connected to the internet for the next part so if you haven't already go ahead and turn your hotspot back on or router and add any email address other than a Gmail (I used my yahoo account) then follow through with the setup into it takes you back to the very first screen you see when you turned on the tablet. Now just turn the tablet screen off and back on (just the screen, do not power down the tablet) put in your lockscreen password and now In the top right corner there should be a little yellow icon which lets you switch users (if you see this, you've got it beat) now create a new user signing into your Gmail and Samsung accounts (if you don't have one, create a new account) once you're done with that it will take you to the home screen, pull down the notification bar and go into settings (notice since you're on an added user you can't factory reset the device) find "Users", and then switch back to the owner profile, it then tells you that you still need to set up the tablet to continue. Once i clicked okay it now let me pull down the notification bar to access settings, but this time you're on the owners account so you can factory reset it, go to "Back up and Reset" and then go ahead and factory reset it again. If done correctly the FRP will no longer be on the tablet. I know this probably sounds extremely complex so if you have any questions feel free to message me and Ill give you my email and phone number and ill help walk you through it
You are a life saver!

Hi,
I've been a lurker on this forum for over 3 years.. I never got round to signing up.
I've just created account, with the purpose of telling you how grateful I am, I have been looking for a solution all night.
Nothing, literally NOTHING! worked, but your solution worked with no issues, I even had my old apps restored.
I spent HOURS reading through countless posts, watching youtube videos.. trying everything..
I must admit, your post was a little complicated, I ended up giving up 2 or 3 times to try other things, but eventually went back to it, read everything super carefully, and it worked perfectly!
Thank you so much!!!
Mike.

Wow, it's pretty awesome to see someone else was able to use my crazy instructions and come out successful. I spent almost two days doing the same thing. I can't even count how many forums I read, videos i watched or methods I tried. I was driving myself crazy (and everyone around me) i was beginning to think it was impossible on this device. I have been using xda for many years and I'm thankful for all the knowledge I've gained from this forum so when I was able to beat it i felt I was obligated to pay it forward.
I wish I had the time to create a video explaining how to do it, I'm sure it would make a lot more sense that way.
Anyway I'm so glad I was able to help

THANK YOU!!!!!!! in large shouty caps.
I screwed up my Samsung Tab E the other day, saw your workaround yesterday, and after a few tries I am in my tablet again this morning. I don't use it for much as I have other computers, but I do use it for a few things and having it rendered useless was a pretty big pill to swallow. I still need to make the new account the primary user, or get back in to the original account, but I'm going to leave that for right now. I'm just happy as HECK that i bypassed that gmail thing and got in. Wish I'd found your post right off the bat, but mostly just happy I found it at ALL. Many thanks!!!!!!!

The PG1 can be downgraded to T580UEU1APF5, then it will work. However, I have to create second user in order to switch to owner account.
A message will pop up which says " To use this tablet, you first have to sign in to an owner's google account in use on this tablet when it was last reset."
Reboot the tablet, it will go straight to owner's account. Remove any Google account before doing the Factory Reset, you're done.
I successfully bypassed FRP on 3 tablets by downgrade from PG1 ( released July 2016 ) to PF5 ( released June 2016 ) . The PL4 ( released Dec 2016) , QC2 ( released Mar 2017 ) will lock the downgrade attempt. This downgrade will work on the SM-T580 with firmware build PG1 or older.
Look at the last 3 characters of your build, the alphabetical order will tell the year and month
PG1
P= 16 or 2016
G= 7 or July
PG1= version 1, released on July 2016.
The PG1 can update to PL4 and use the method that can download Google Account Manager . This app allows to sign in with your own Google Account.
Be aware, each method will work with certain build and model, you should know more than one method to bypass FRP.

I've downgraded to PF5, done a factory reset and wiped cache. Followed the instructions and unplugged the router just as it finished "checking for updates". This gets me to the point where is says "there is a problem with the Google servers. Try again later." But when I click next, it just loops back to the "agreement" screen. What am I doing wrong?
edit: Or, can you point me to a post with the PL4 Google Account Manager method?

When downgraded to PF5, it should work but you have to use Personal Hotspot to quickly disconnect at the step checking Software Update.
Use your router is too slow for quick disconnect. Try again by using your phone connection, I also have done over hundreds for FRP Bypass by this method.
You only need Personal Hotspot to create first user with PIN, the rest no need internet connection to add second user. When finish the profile of second user, reboot.
Your tablet should boot to the welcome screen with PIN, unlock it then you're ready to do the Factory Reset. The whole process takes less than 10 minutes.
If it's not working, upgrade the firmware to PL4. I have done bypass FRP over hundreds of T580 or P580 by this method, guaranteed working.

This method is not working with Android 7, so don't try. The current Android 7, build QF1 can downgrade to Android 6, build PL4 with ease.

Well i have found a way to baypas all of that, sory for not writing corectly but im learning englisch!
So my method works on latest update and latest android version for sm-t580 that is Nougat 7.0
When you are blocked by google mesage that says that you need last used google mail before reset, go back to scren where you chose wifi network, and click create new, then when keyboard shows up, click on setings sign at botom.
Now you have a samsung keyboard writen i left uper corner, click on that so that you get one step back and now you should see 3 options, the second one should be Google Voice typing, click on that( you should be conected to internet before you get here), now on new menu click on YOUR FEED and activate it, it should show blue screen with some writing, and at bootom you have two options, SIGN IN and NO THANKS.
Select no thanks and it will take you on new scrren with search engine, from there type Samsung Knox apk, it will take you to internet and from there on try to find any latest version and download and install it, set up knox, create account, from knox setings on phone set knox as main usser, than make backup from phone, now login on my.samsungknox DOT com with same login as you created and used on knox on phone, now from website aces your device, and fully reset it, VOILA, after it reboots it will take you trought setup proces like new device but now your FRP google protection is removed.
I have spent 2 days figuring out how to aces and bypas this bu.sit on my device, like its my tablet , i have forgot my mail, so what now i need to depend on google to say whats mine what not, i share my method with you guys so i hope that i can help someone, if i helped im glad, you can clik thx or like what so ewer on this site and thats all.
BYE :highfive:
PS
One small hint, you can first install some custom louncher so it will be faster to doo all this..

No you dont need to downgrade, read my post above
OK, this is not strictly a OP3T problem but that's where it happened to me. I run Norton Mobile Security on my phone, which is encrypted. Just recently enabled Web Protection to see if that would help speed up the incredibly long time Norton takes to analyze links before it allows pages to load. When I set it up and enabled Norton Security Services in the Accessibility menu, there was a fine-print screen that said Norton would be taking over some of the lock screen functions. No big deal.
When I rebooted the phone, it went straight to Android, without asking for the encryption password. I booted into recovery, same thing. I tried disabling Norton Web Protection, still no password. Uninstalled Norton, still no password. The Security menu shows the phone is still encrypted, which I figured because the installation didn't take long enough to decrypt the phone, and because it doesn't work that way anyway.
I tried this first on an LG G2 running Lineage 16 , but didn't notice the lack of the password prompt until it was too late, and I had done the same thing to my daily driver OP3T.
After about two hours on a chat with Norton support, they escalated me up to senior support, and said I'd get a call back in a couple of days.
So, I turn to this group. There's only one way I can explain this behavior: it appears Norton Mobile Security might be modifying the bootloader to preload the encryption password and bypass the prompt. This effectively disables decryption, since anyone can now boot my phone into recovery and ADB pull whatever they want.
The phone is fully functional, but also wide open. Short of copying everything off the phone, resetting and starting from scratch, does anyone have a suggestion? I do have TWRP backups that include the bootloader, but I don't want to overwrite the bootloader if that risks breaking the encryption entirely and locking me out of my phone.
In the meantime, be careful with Norton Mobile Security!
If memory serves me right (ha!), disabling the boot password is supposed to happen when you enable any accessibility settings...
That makes sense. The warning looked like standard Android boilerplate. Is there a way to re-enable the password prompt?

Yes, disable whatever accessibility setting you enabled. It's got nothing specifically to do with Norton....

I disabled everything I could find related to accessibility - the Norton services and the Android accessibility shortcut. What am I missing?
Also, the problem affects the recovery partition boot, which has also stopped asking for the encryption password but decrypts the phone must fine. Doesn't seem like changes to the Android options would change that.
You might have to reenable the boot password in the security settings as well.

Yes! That did it. Opening the PIN option on the security screen brought up a prompt asking if I wanted to have the PIN prompt on boot. It now asks for passwords on both system and recovery. Thank you for the last piece of the puzzle.
