Stuck in weird screen after factory reset - Huawei P9 Questions & Answers

I factory reset my phone to wipe all personal data and make it as new again. But as soon as it turned on again, It displayed the Huawei logo as always, then the logo of my carrier, and then got stuck in this weird screen (see photo) where nothing i press or swipe will give any reaction.
Tried the hard reset by pressing up and down volume and power at the same time. A different screen appeared for a second mentioning EMUI and below Installing update 5% and then suddenly an error appeared (see second photo).
Please dear experts here, let me know what is going on... I love this phone and was very happy with it until I decided to the factory reset which on other phones always helped me get original performance back.
EDIT: well this forum wont let me post links as a new member, i guess that includes images. so let me try like this

hope that works

No idea why but it's showing the smart cover lock screen when its supposed to only show with a Huawei P9 smart cover that is closed on the screen.

oh so you're saying it's showing the screen as if there was a cover on it? that would make so much sense because i've had the display replaced just a day before... so maybe they didnt do it right and now the phone has some pressure on the LCD and thinks it's a cover?

Yes, exactly as you said, it is thinking the phone has a smart cover on it.
How the smart cover works is phones is that they have a magnet on the smart cover that where if you were to put a magnet at the exact spot on the screen it will trigger the hall effect sensor (The spot where the phone would be told that the smart cover is closed).
Yeah sounds like something went wrong with the screen replacement but it's rather rare for this to happen as it would require an magnet to trigger the smart cover sensor.

so weird... i hope they can fix that issue it's still not working but i will bring it back today. thanks for explaining how the smart cover works!
do you know by any chance on which part of the screen those triggers are? or that trigger magnet, if there's only one?

did you manage to resolve the issue? i currently have this problem

smart cover works with magnet. One of the quick fixes is to take a magnet and pass it over the screen. As i believe because im working for huawei they send us some devices and seems like the microphone or the speaker was moved. Those two have magnet and so it conflicts with the smart cover. Try as i said to pass a magnet from the screen and see if that would fix it. I am going to highlight That, This is happening due a hit, drop or misplaced speaker or microphone.

im not using a smart cover and i cant get onto my phone because it shows the screen that the smart cover would show if it was on. if only i could get onto my phone somehow and turn the setting off:crying:

then you are going to have a factory repair because its either the mic or the speaker in a bad position and its activating the smart cover since both of them have a magnet in order to work.

that's not a problem, when you call goes out not to touch the screen with the ear, is a proximity system and really get away from the phone and lights.

sorry to revive this thread, but I have the same problem. The problem is only when I'm outside with direct solar light. Inside a room it works well.
I'll try not to touch the screen next time, then post the results here
Already happened to other users, it's an HW problem, warranty repair is the best viable option.
How a small rubber could cause deadlocks...

Basically you're right. The deadlock is caused by the proximity sensor.
There are two possibilities:
1. some circuit could be broken (quite no chance to fix)
2. small grommet inside the display is missing (might be easy to fix)
On my device the little rubber grommet was missing....
Here's what happens inside:
The Milestone uses very comfortable proximity sensor to detect the reflecting light by the users cheek during telephone calls.
This sensor is using an external IR-LED to work properly and to increase sensitivity.
To prevent internal reflection inside the housing there's a small rubber grommet placed between the IR-LED and the sensor.
If this part is missing the internal reflection could cause phantom detection and leads to a deadlock if a call is initated.
@joaelvas: You might check if your device has already been opened.
There should be some sticker on one of the torx-screws at the backside of the case. If the sticker is broken, then your device had already been opened by someone. AFAIK, no warranty in this case.
Anyway you might try to give it to the service
If you're not scared, open the case yourself...
Please be very careful with the damn flex cables... you might ripp them apart so easily.
See here for some instructions how to open the case:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-Motorola-Droid-Front-Panel/2958/1
Although it's for the droid, it's the same for milestone.
Good luck,

[Q] Faulty Proximity sensor,is there a way to actually disable it?

Hey guys, sorry for bringing this up.
Whenever i dial, screen goes black and doesn't come back on.
If i place it flat on a table, then it gets lit but as soon as i rotate the device it goes black again.
My HD7 recently started having this problems...
It started happening after i replaced the micro sd inside with a bigger one.
So my concern is that somehow it moved or got dust when i removed the back plastic cover? Where is it placed anyway?
I tried hard resetting 2 times but nothing works. It would be cool if there was a registry or app to take control of it. Can somebody help?
PS. i cannot send it back because i live in Albania (no official htc shops either around here)
Thanks!
Hello,
The proximity sensor is located on the top left of the device, you can see it when viewed under a bright light. Have you applied any screen protectors which can interfere with them? Replacing the sd card should not have any effect on the proximity sensor. When you rotate the device when the call is placed, the screen should go black by default cause of the sensor
@rhn thank you for your reply.
My phone does not have any screen protector or cover of any kind. Also,if i rotate it while in call it still remains black. As soon as i press the call button, screen goes black and wont come back until the call is ended by the person on the other side.
Really really annoying... Oh sometimes it even flashes after the call has ended...
Sounds like a hardware fault ...have you tried updating your rom?You can find a compatible rom in the rom development subforum..
Yep,tried that too. Just updated today and still the same issue.
It also happened after i changed the micro sd,so maybe something has moved in there. There's no other way than try to open the device and check it out,i guess :/
If you can think of something else, let me know

S pen problem

Hey guys I have a question. I recently changed the screen on my note 4 to a new non cracked one. Now I tried the screen with the s pen before I took the phone apart so I knew it worked. Well once I got the phone all back together the s pen on the new screen doesn't work anymore. What would control the s pen in the phone hardware wise that would make it stop working? I tried all the software troubleshooting ideas other than reloading the rom. Anybody have any ideas?
Probably the s pen ribbon cable not connected properly. I had the same issue when I personally repaired my n4. Realized it after the same issues u have and had to separate the lcd from the frame to easily connect both ribbon cables the same time.
Thanks. I'll check it out.
Did you manage to fix it? I have same problem. I got mine fixed at a phone repair shop. When I remove the s pen, the air command pops out but when I touch the screen, nothing happens.

ZUK Z1 - Hardware button light intensity

Hey all
After reading this forum for ages I took the plunge on a Z1, and am not disappointed!
I had one question, if anyone is able to help.
The hardware buttons light up with a nice white LED.
However, the one on the left (select open apps) is much, much brighter than the one on the right (back).
In fact, it's almost as if the right hand one doesn't work at all.
Is this the same as everyone else's phone, or does mine have a defect?
Many thanks to anyone that can compare theirs.
Uri
P.S: I have the grey one with the black front, which may make this more noticeable.

Is a hardware issue, I think.
My 2 buttons has the same light intensity and is a good intensity.
In my previous prone, a OnePlus One, I have suffered this issue: the back button had a lower light intensity compared to the other buttons.

Thanks very much for the quick reply
To be honest, everything else about the phone is perfect (screen, fingerprint scanner, buttons don't wobble, etc), so for the first time in my life I might just live with "almost-perfect".
I had too many issues with iPhones and am worried if I swap it out, then the replacement will have some other defect like screen bleed, etc, etc.

If you can live with this issue: Don't return it!
I also haven't returned my OPO. Is a small detect I think
Easy to fix
I had this issue too, but it is easy to fix. When you open your phone backcover, you only have to remove the speaker and reposition the led. The led is loose in a cable and so you can reposition it until the buttons have the same intensity and fix it with some glue.
On my phone the intensity is now exactly the same and i only needed half an hour for it.
When you remove the backcover warm it up a bit and use a sucker to avoid scratches in the frame.
Well I can confirm that I have the same issue on my white Zuk! But it's not very noticeable so i'm keeping it like it is!

Wasn't very hard to remove, i didn't brake any clips. Use a sucker and as soon as you see a little gap, use a plastic pick or your fingernails to gently pull up the backcover.
After i opened it i removed the tape from the phone and the backcover. After the work is done you can simply close the Backcover without tape or something. I didn't use tape and had no gaps afterwards.

Same for me. back button light intensity is very low compared to menu button. Its not a big issue. My friend also having same issue. you may get same problem in that replacement unit also. So,better keep as it is.
@arunpkrt and @aniketsabarad If you don't mind there is also an option inside the Zuk Z1 lights configuration to switch off this little ugly menu LED and back LED. The function itself stays active and the touch area is large enough to hit the sensitive zone blinded easily .

You guys are right. I faced this problem initially. The phone was perfect, I set it up nicely and was using it. But after a day or two this back button led issue started frustrating me. I applied for a replacement and was surprised to see that even the replacement unit had same issue. So really no point getting it replaced. If it really bothers, you can take the risk to open up the back case as other members suggested.
I also have the same issue but its not important because im using onscreen keyboard.
Overall is perfect but one thing is missing. We still dont have marshmallow to enjoy before Android N release.
Edit: Happy 500th post to me! God Bless!
I don't have the issue, but if ever I had it, it won't matter as I disabled the hardware buttons once I started using mine. 5.5" is too much of a screen and the 3 on screen buttons don't take up that much space. I am much worried about pressing the hard home button because I read from some users that it failed after 2 or three months of using the phone. I only use it for finger print. No need to press it. Double tap to wake, double tap to sleep. No hard buttons to wear.

Black screen and only Clock, date and weather

Hello,
My Huawei P20 Pro got stucked in a mode where displays black screen and only for about 40% of the screen, in the right it displays clock, date and weather. I can be called, the phone is charging but that's all. I had about ~70% battery when this happened. Reboot doesn't resolve the issue.
Any idea?
Thank you!
i65.tinypic.com/351fvhx.jpg
This sounds as if your P20 Pro is stuck in the mode for a closed flip case with a window (see https://i.ytimg.com/vi/G7sU3yGpRF8/maxresdefault.jpg).
That mode is normally triggered by a magnet located in the lid of the flip cover. Do you maybe happen to have a magnet too close to your P20 Pro?
Thanks
That was the issue. I just took off the case (which is not with flip) but it has a magnet for car. Thank you for your reply.

Anyone managed to fix this? I have the same issue. Tried everything, safe mode, recovery, restarting... I cannot login because the screen is irresponsive and cant insert the pin for the screenlock, otherwise the screen itself works.

remove gently the back glass without damaging the finger print sensor flex and disconnect the main flex cable which goes from the second board to the main board, and start the phone without connecting the man flex, you will be able to go to settings and turn the slim cover option off

Maybe too late, I was changing my battery already, then same thing happened to my p20 pro. I tried to use magnets to try unlock to no avail. Anyway read that the hall sensor is just at the upper left of the fingerptint sensor. After replacing the battery, turned it on, smart lock still active. Flipped it backwards, unscrewed the bottom right screws and gave it a few tap or knocks by hand an voila, screen is back to normal. I cant pinpoint the problem was, but thats how i fixed mine
