Black screen and only Clock, date and weather - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello,
My Huawei P20 Pro got stucked in a mode where displays black screen and only for about 40% of the screen, in the right it displays clock, date and weather. I can be called, the phone is charging but that's all. I had about ~70% battery when this happened. Reboot doesn't resolve the issue.
Any idea?
Thank you!

This sounds as if your P20 Pro is stuck in the mode for a closed flip case with a window (see https://i.ytimg.com/vi/G7sU3yGpRF8/maxresdefault.jpg).
That mode is normally triggered by a magnet located in the lid of the flip cover. Do you maybe happen to have a magnet too close to your P20 Pro?

Thanks
That was the issue. I just took off the case (which is not with flip) but it has a magnet for car. Thank you for your reply.

Go to settings -> Smart assistance and turn off Smart cover

hi, I have this issue. no flip case... n I can't into settings to turn off Smart Cover any ideas?

Anyone managed to fix this? I have the same issue. Tried everything, safe mode, recovery, restarting... I do not want to lose my data, is there a way that I can login and back up my data and then factory reset it? I cannot login because the screen is irresponsive and cant insert the pin for the screenlock, otherwise the screen itself works.

remove gently the back glass without damaging the finger print sensor flex and disconnect the main flex cable which goes from the second board to the main board, and start the phone without connecting the man flex, you will be able to go to settings and turn the slim cover option off

i have done almost everything talked about above on this phone for a week now but the black screen with date and battery percentage cant go off and the phone cant open anything else. its where it stops. what do i do . guys i need help i feel frustrated

Did anyone resolve this issue?I have same problem.however my screen did come back for 10-15 sec back and i manage to do hard reset but now i am stuck on black screen

Maybe too late, I was changing my battery already, then same thing happened to my p20 pro. I tried to use magnets to try unlock to no avail. Anyway read that the hall sensor is just at the upper left of the fingerptint sensor. After replacing the battery, turned it on, smart lock still active. Flipped it backwards, unscrewed the bottom right screws and gave it a few tap or knocks by hand an voila, screen is back to normal. I cant pinpoint the problem was, but thats how i fixed mine

Screen turns off when using magnetic dock in car

So I have a new magnetic mount for my car and when I put my phone on it the screen will turn black and lock.
When I hit the power button it will turn on to the lock screen and if I unlock the phone it will go to a black screen and none of the android buttons appear.
If I take it off the mount it works just fine.
I checked around and didn't see any dock settings or anything related to that.
Is there a way to disable this or figure out how to get around it?
Using MeanPop2.0 5.1 update.
So it looks like I need to find a way to disable the hall sensor.

You using a case to mount the magnet-to-magnet connection from phone to mount?
I have a case with the metal sheet inside the case covered with some tape. When i dock my phone to the mount it sticks perfectly and no issues.
I dont know if this will be any help but Magnet Unlocker in Play Store might help disable this?
Cant post link, noob here still.

Exactly the same issue with my N6 on the magnetic dock...
Had this been resolved? I'm having the exact same issues. Sometimes I get it to work with a reboot. But it's annoying.
Have you guys checked settings - > display -> daydream?
There is an option for when it docks, I'd suggest turning that off. Just a guess, I don't have anything magnetic to check.
It could also be tripping a magnetic "off"; say if you had a flip cover, it would turn the display off when you closed the cover.

I had exactly the same problem, with my LG Power X. Solved it by moving the metal plate to be higher in the case. Found that the magnet switched off screen and only displayed clock - when it attached to the lower half of phone; but when i moved the magnet around i found only certain spots triggered the display switch off. I suspect there is a magnetic sensor in the phone for some kind of docking feature.

S pen problem

Hey guys I have a question. I recently changed the screen on my note 4 to a new non cracked one. Now I tried the screen with the s pen before I took the phone apart so I knew it worked. Well once I got the phone all back together the s pen on the new screen doesn't work anymore. What would control the s pen in the phone hardware wise that would make it stop working? I tried all the software troubleshooting ideas other than reloading the rom. Anybody have any ideas?
Probably the s pen ribbon cable not connected properly. I had the same issue when I personally repaired my n4. Realized it after the same issues u have and had to separate the lcd from the frame to easily connect both ribbon cables the same time.
Thanks. I'll check it out.
Did you manage to fix it? I have same problem. I got mine fixed at a phone repair shop. When I remove the s pen, the air command pops out but when I touch the screen, nothing happens.

Stuck in weird screen after factory reset

I factory reset my phone to wipe all personal data and make it as new again. But as soon as it turned on again, It displayed the Huawei logo as always, then the logo of my carrier, and then got stuck in this weird screen (see photo) where nothing i press or swipe will give any reaction.
Tried the hard reset by pressing up and down volume and power at the same time. A different screen appeared for a second mentioning EMUI and below Installing update 5% and then suddenly an error appeared (see second photo).
Please dear experts here, let me know what is going on... I love this phone and was very happy with it until I decided to the factory reset which on other phones always helped me get original performance back.
EDIT: well this forum wont let me post links as a new member, i guess that includes images. so let me try like this

hope that works
No idea why but it's showing the smart cover lock screen when its supposed to only show with a Huawei P9 smart cover that is closed on the screen.
oh so you're saying it's showing the screen as if there was a cover on it? that would make so much sense because i've had the display replaced just a day before... so maybe they didnt do it right and now the phone has some pressure on the LCD and thinks it's a cover?
Yes, exactly as you said, it is thinking the phone has a smart cover on it.
How the smart cover works is phones is that they have a magnet on the smart cover that where if you were to put a magnet at the exact spot on the screen it will trigger the hall effect sensor (The spot where the phone would be told that the smart cover is closed).
Yeah sounds like something went wrong with the screen replacement but it's rather rare for this to happen as it would require an magnet to trigger the smart cover sensor.
so weird... i hope they can fix that issue it's still not working but i will bring it back today. thanks for explaining how the smart cover works!
do you know by any chance on which part of the screen those triggers are? or that trigger magnet, if there's only one?

did you manage to resolve the issue? i currently have this problem
smart cover works with magnet. One of the quick fixes is to take a magnet and pass it over the screen. As i believe because im working for huawei they send us some devices and seems like the microphone or the speaker was moved. Those two have magnet and so it conflicts with the smart cover. Try as i said to pass a magnet from the screen and see if that would fix it. I am going to highlight That, This is happening due a hit, drop or misplaced speaker or microphone.

then you are going to have a factory repair because its either the mic or the speaker in a bad position and its activating the smart cover since both of them have a magnet in order to work.

Stuck on "Cover View" after screen replacement

Hi folks,
I recently ordered what appeared to be original huawei p9 replacement screen together with metal frame and replaced broken screen. Phone now boots normally, I can also boot to fastboot and recovery, but unfortunately phone doesn't have ADB debugging and OEM unlock turned on.
When phone boots normally, I can get only to the lock screen of "Smart view" or "cover view", so I cant unlock phone or anything else. I tried also with mouse via OTG, no luck...
Anyone have some other idea that I can try? If i could enter settings to turn off cover screen all would be good
Cover is usually detected by magnet.
Could you try to play with some magnet or cover from another phone to get it unlocked for once.
Maybe, making an incoming call could help to unlock.
Once you get in (?), go to Settings, Smart Assistance and permanently switch off Smart Cover - it's by default on, most people don't have the cover and IMO it helps draining the battery

I tried the magnet, no luck. Also incoming call is impossible since I get no SIM pin input prompt at startup... Any other ideas?

You can move SIM to another phone and disable PIN, then put it back to Huawei.
Not sure would it help, you may have hardware problem with the replacement parts or work
To clarify this issue - the problem was in charging board, so changing it solved the problem. Other solution (if everything else works) is to remove charging board, boot the phone and disable smart cover in settings & then inserting charging board back.

My Note 8 (N950F / DS) Got Wet - A few questions

It's supposed to be water resistant, but I've never dunked it intentionally under water. Bought this in 2017. Unfortunately, I had an accident and it fell inside a sink full of hot water (while I was taking care of a patient) and it stayed there for a minute or two.
What happened are the following:
Power button no longer works - It was a little wonky as it kept turning the screen on and popping up the camera. I tried to turn it off, but it kept turning back on.
Stock camera app - doesn't work anymore. whenever I try to activate the app, it just crashes.
Rear camera hardware - focusing is gone. Using another app (camera zoom fx) I can access it, but pics are blurry. It can't focus on images 12 feet away.
Front cam hardware - there was a mist that fogged the camera. but it seems to be working fine after.
Screen - the screen was relatively ok after the dunking. However, water got inside the S-pen port. I immediately removed it and started drying the phone for 48 hours. I tried to return the s-pen after, but it seemed to trigger something and the screen started flickering. it lasted for a day but it's now completely normal.
Aside from those, everything is fine with the phone. I managed an online backup to Samsung account and everything.
If you're still here, here are some of my questions. I appreciate all your help.
1. I've now turned it off for a complete drying. Now I can't turn it on. Is there a way to turn it on? Is a USB C jig available to do this?
2. I left some sensitive data in the phone *coughbootypicscough*, is there a way to access the memory and wipe it? or maybe factory reset the phone without turning it on?
3. Can the cameras be replaced / fixed?
Hoping for all our help.

The fact that water was hot made it easier to gain access to the inside of the phone and personally I'm going to say it's now a hardware issue and the phone is likely no good anymore.. If you're worried about certain pictures on the phone just destroy the phone so no one could possibly take parts out of it and try to use them. Smash it with a hammer, drive over it, you get the idea.. Just get another phone at this point the reason I know it's a hardware issue is because of what your camera did so the water made it past the seals mainly because it was hot and loosened the glue to get past it.

it actually still works. I tried hard not to turn it off because the power button is broken. Last night, I fell asleep and forgot to charge it and battery drained and phone turned off.
It still charges but I can't turn it on because the power button is broken.
I was hoping if anyone knows if a USBC jig can help and turn it on for a bit or any other way to trigger download mode and then restart.
Try to hold Volume down + Bixby button and plug the cable in, it may be goes in download mode amd than you can reboot you phone. If not try only with Volume down and cable.

I'll try that again. For now, I'm placing the phone inside a box with desiccant to ensure that it dries completely. Hopefully, it restores some function to the powerbutton.

Try opening and removing the simcard tray while the phone rest in the box with desiccant. Hopefully can remove water vapors better and faster.
