Dex Not Working - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

When I put my phone in the station it goes black and my tv does the same for a second. Than te tv says no signal. When I unplug my phone it says "samsung dex"... Is it because my tv has only 720p?

I'm having the same issue. The Dex and monitor worked fine with my S8+ but just got the Note 8 and it's blank.

Nothing

Nothing happens for me and ive tried 2 dex stations. Could the dex software be missing from my phone?

I have used a generic USB-c-> HDMI/USB-A/USB-C adapter without issue. It was finicky at first. What are the origins of your phones?

I believe Dex actually specs 1080p as minimum requirements.

Elo

I have used an old Dell 19" 4:3 display. It's easily 10years old. It letter boxed it, but still worked.

Did anybody find out what causes this as I have the same issue with my note 8, tv says no signal but when phone removed from doc it says samsunsung dex?

I m having the same issue as well!

I was having problems with the DeX not detecting and also charging the phone every time I put it on, had to try 6/7 times, but it seems fixed after latest update

I had a Dex Station which would charge the phone and allow USB peripherals to be used but no video out or detection of it by my phone. I returned that one and bought another from someone else and it works perfectly. It could be a defective unit.

power supply can also be an issue. only my original note 8 works. I've tried with an s8 fast charger and it dont work. i have also tried with numerous 3rd party fast chargers and also did not work.( quick charge 2 and 3 compatible)

One other tip is, if you freeze or remove the Samsung Keyboard, Dex will not work. They are tied together.
After having issues with mine I found that little tidbit on line.

interesting.
but as any good trouble shooter would do, if it dosent work on stock rom and settings then issue is not on the phones side.

The OP did not state his phone wasn't modified. Mine was merely a suggestion that was proven to work, all things being equal.

it was December or January update not Oreo that fixed it, flashed Oreo on my other Note 8 but haven't tried that in DeX mode yet so not sure if there's any changes in Oreo there, I would imagine it can use the new DeX pad though

HDMI issues during installation

Hello,
I just got my Chromecast and it is pretty awesome. It's going to be great for business travel and I want to watch Netflix and stuff. I do have one concern though. When I first installed the Chromecast, my TV wouldn't recognize the HDMI signal. It was saying "no signal detected" our something along those lines. I unplugged the Chromecast from the TV and plugged it back in and out worked like a charm. I'm not an expert with how HDMI works, but should this be a cause for concern? I've tried to recreate the problem by unplugging it and plugging it back in (and even having it half plugged in) and I wasn't able to make the problem occur again. I guess I would just like some opinions. After all, I don't want to have a faulty unit, and if I do, I want to exchange it before my local Best Buy sells out.
Thanks!

I wouldn't worry unless I see it again multiple times
could be a fluke... we all know how hdcp/drm can mess things up
I can't get a signal on any of my tvs. Worked last night unplugged it during the day and tonight doesn't even show a signal.
Could the hdmi plug be damaged?

Thanks for the info! I didn't realize HDMI did a handshake before connecting. If I see it again, I'll worry more. I think if I see it again, I'll either take it back to BestBuy or contact Google for a warranty replacement. Do you know how I would do that? I can't seem to find a support website for the Chromecast.

I would try a factory reset either by using the desktop app or by holding the button on the back for 25 seconds. Also, even though I don't need it, I use the HDMI extender that comes with the Chromecast for two reasons:
1) so when I'm moving it around my house, I don't have to unplug and replugin the actual unit. If the pins on the extender get damaged, its cheaper and easier to replace.
2) for stress relief so the unit doesnt get bent/pulled down over time.

Experience with AA Mirror on XZ1 Compact?

Hello,
I am asking if someone have some experience with AA Mirror (MirrorLink for not officially supported phones) on XZ1 Compact.
I am basically asking if someone have tried it, if it works or works reliable or not. Usage will be simple only for GPS navigation - Sygic. Nothing more.
Reason is that to get AA Mirror on XZ1 Compact i need to root and unlock bootloader on quite a new phone, that still have about 14 months of remaining warranty period. So I would like to know if its worth of it.
Any info will be appreciated!
I'd like to know this, too. I was going to get a MirrorLink screen this week until I realized this phone probably doesn't support it natively...anyway, does AA Mirror do anything non-rooted?

I havent tried it, but since it needs low level USB access, I am sure it wont do anything, maybe not even install.
Problem is that MirrorLink support is really weak. Sony does not support it at all, and e. g. Samsung only on flagship models.
I still guess that I have to try it, not really appreciate it. I hoped that this forum section is more alive.
I have been using AA Mirror daily for the past 3 months. About one or two times a week the connection to Android auto is lost and I have to replug the phone in, or my car stops responding to touch response. This usually doesn't happen when I use regular AA apps. That's about the only issue I have and I haven't tried changing settings to fix it because it doesn't happen too often, everything works well enough for me to keep using it.
Edit: I'm actually using AAStream, a version that should fix some bugs

All on XZ1 Compact? That s really cool to hear!
Were there any special steps for getting it work ? Except of root of course.
Ok, I just realized that this isn't actually MirrorLink. It's just outputs Android Auto, not MirrorLink. OP, you got my hopes up for nothing...
Anyway, my searching indicates that non-rooted AA Mirror kind of works for mirroring only. The touch input doesn't, so you have to do it via the phone screen.

I know that. As far as I searched, for full and true MirrorLink you need to have manufacturer support out of the box. No one actually figured how to implement this on other phones. I guess that it requires custom kernel module or something closed source.
AA Mirror or AA Stream is sort of solution for other phones, but it works as screen mirroring utility only (you have to control everything from phone, not from car). I really dont mind, especially for GPS I always set up destination or changing it while not driving. So basic screen mirror is enough.
I already installed AA Stream / AA mirror and it really requires root. Without it doesnt work, which I have expected.

Yes all on XZ1 compact. And no special steps, but have to add I'm on the LineageOS rom. Just never have been able to get Netflix working as they block screen output to another screen, but that's a different issue. It's not perfect, but it's the easiest thing I have been able to do after rooting my phone. I have way more issues with banking or McDonald's apps than with AA Stream Still worth it though. In fact so worth it I refused a free iPhone from work as I rather keep my compact for these 'features'
So I just got a car radio that supports mirroring over both USB debugging and MirrorLink and it works perfectly without root! Including touch input via the car's screen. The radio says MirrorLink ("P-Link"), but I assume it's doing it through USB debugging. Which makes sense, since that's the same way most Android remoting programs work on PC. I haven't tested the audio but I assume that works, too. It has a huge 7 inch screen and was pretty cheap, so it'll be perfect for navigation.

Thank you very much. this is really helpfull !!
I am also considering LineageOS 16.0 RC6, because if I understand properly, that if you dont backup DRM keys you will loose official Camera and other functionalities after root.

Lucky you!
But this will probably not work on stock car display unit (like original 7" Toyota system) which almost all supports MirrorLink only. I will try it You have some additional app for that? Or just checked Dev. options on and all OK?
No additional app. Just USB debugging enabled.

Rog phone 2 streaming/screen capture with elgato nightmare

I bought an Elgato HD60S to be able to stream through my laptop or desktop from the phone. I connected the Usb C cable from sideport to elgato then HDMI from elgato to pc. Phone is recognized and its screen displayed in elgato's capture software. Now the issue; elgato loses image from the phone every other second or so and there's absolutely no consistency to screen capture. It also displays the gray distortation-like screen on every cutoff like old TV's used to do when the antenna wouldnt work. I looked it up and although there is not a whole lot of info on rog phone 2 regaering this issue, I read that a powered HDMI splitter would solve it, the issue being caused by HDCP. Ordered that, hooked it up, and still the same exact thing. Then, read elsewhere that the Asus Pro Dock is the only working way to stream from the phone. Ordered that, hooked it up, and still it's exactly the same. At this point I am absolutely clueless as to how to workaround this issue. Please help
FYI I am trying to stream PUBG and tried with both my laptop and desktop and multiple different cables, so there's that. Elgato doesnt mention the actual "HDCP" text until I reconnect the phone a couple times to it. Streaming works perfect with my Note 9 in the same setup.
Is it working now
Inorderd to bypass the hdcp block we need hdmi splitter
Is that working

Nope. Splitter didnt work for me. However, I did find a workaround which is to use "ASUS Pro Dock" in conjuction with Elgato. The culprit here is that you have to power the Dock with its Usb C port to make it work. When connected, it might seem like its still not working but it smooths out after a minute or so. Then when it is working, you can unplug that Usb C and it should remain working fine. In the end, I was still having issues with poor audio quality (crackling/popping and slowed-down speedwise), but got a fix for that as well.
The android 10 beta is here for the device try that and see if it works
@twinklejadoo bro i faced the same issue and solved it by using online hdmi splitter

I faced complete inoperability of Wireless display. DEX & SmartView stopped working, my phone just can't connect to any Smart TV and USB-C Monitor either (latter just blinks with no signal). DEX via USB cable (with Windows PC) works well though.
I searched the internet and found that somebody faced same issue for different Samsung phone models and found suggested solution like this:
Insert into
build.prop a parameter
"wlan.wfd.hdcp = disable"
I'm a bit anxious about adjustment of this file as I may brick my device.
Please advise how can I solve the issue.
Thanks!

Hello im facing the same issue... The command worked for you?

Chromecast Logo shows Up, then blackscreen (also FireTV)

Hello everyone
I'm desperately trying so solve a problem I'm having now for a few days.
I've got an older Samsung smart tv (think it's from 2012 - Model D5700)
Everything works like charm. My PC is plugged in, I can watch movies from a hard drive etc.
But when i plug in a Chromecast (2nd gen) and a firetv Stick I only see a boot Logo and after that a Black screen on 1080p (no "no signal")
I've already tried factory resets on every device, every HDMI port, plugging in with HDMI extender, without extender, with HDMI switch, directly into TV, multiple resets at the same time with every device.
I've also tried multiple power adapters and using the Chromecast/FireTV on a different device. (Both devices are working like a charm)
I've entered the TVs Service Menu and did a factory reset. Also I checked if the TV is showing some errors.
Can anyone help me with this problem?
I can't understand why the TV is not able to get a picture from the Chromecast. It's super illogical for me.
You don't know how thankful I would be when someone is helping me to solve this issue.
Have a great day
Kind regards
Tog

I had the exact same problem with a Chromecast Ultra. I tried everything, other TVs, other powersources, monitors, AV receivers, even dissembled it to clean HDMI contacts and whatnot. From what I read elsewhere and my own experience, once you have the black screen after G logo, your Chromecast is irreversibly dead.
Sorry to say it, but it's the truth.
Your display likely doesn't have [new enough] HDCP support.

I have the same problem, and tried all the steps to resolve. But in addition, I plugged in the Chromecast into another TV and it worked perfectly, so the Chromecast is not be dead in my case.
The issue - for me at least - is that the screen is black but the sound is fine, so I can still cast Netflix/YouTube/etc but there is no video displayed, just a blank screen.
My guess is that there was a TV software update and this has caused the problem, but I don't know for sure; it's frustrating, as I only use the TV to cast to.
If it helps, the issue first started on 26 AUG 2022 and the TV is a SAMSUNG UE32J5100. I've contacted Google and Samsung separately to see if they come up with anything.
I'll post an update if I find out anything else.

UPDATE: Samsung have suggested the problem is hardware related, basically the TV is knackered. So, in my case, the fix is to buy a new TV!
Not the answer I wanted but I have to lump it.

I have an apology to make. Despite doing everything I thought I could to fix the problem I neglected the most obvious and fundamental thing....
UNPLUG THE TV AT THE MAINS FOR 60 SECS AND PLUG IT BACK IN!
And now the problem is completely solved. Once again, my sincerest apologies but I hope this helps others.
