Hello Everyone,
I live in Middle East but I bought My Note 8 SM-N950N from South Korea because 256GB is not available here.
Everything is fine till now except I noticed today that I cannot turn off the shutter sound even if the phone is silent.
There is not option in the camera setting to turn the shutter sound off, although my friends who bought their phone locally have it.
In the volume setting I mute all the volume bare (System, media, bixby ...) but still the shutter sound appear.
I asked Bixby to turn the camera shutter sound off, but no change.
My phone is not rooted and I will not root it soon, so I don't have access to system folder.
Any suggestion?

I just asked Bixpy to turn off shutter sound and she did it......not sure which setting she changed though as I can't find the setting anywhere. I am not a huge Bixpy fan, but I she does do a good job with settings
I heard that also & tried telling Bixby to turn off my shutter sound on my N950F, Bixby wouldn't do it. After root I simply renamed the shutter.ogg audio file to shutter.bak. No more shutter sound.
Later I flash the tmobile volte/wifi calling mod by Kalm_Traveler & that enabled tbe shutter sound toggle in the camera settings.
Renaming or deleting the shutter audio file is the easiest but you can try adding the following to get the toggle.
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>TRUE</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
I think in some countries, it is not allowed to silence that sound. So, the only way is to root and delete the system sound file.

Yup, that is true which is why I was not surprised when I found out my UK variant didn't have the toggle. I heard they tried to pass the same law in the US but I guess it never passed as all my US variant phones have the toggle.

I didn't see where the OP said he didn't want yo root. Normally you can't disable it without root. However I believe you can do it using Tasker. I've never tried it so I have no idea how to do it but if you search you'll find a number of threads.
There's also this, not sure if it'll work. Just a FYI, the post says Note 8 is compatible but I'm pretty sure that's the Note 8.0 tablet as the post hasn't been updated since 2013.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2502522
Is there a way to rename that file through adb?
(So that root isnt required)

I am in the same situation.. But I have found an workaround. If you change sound mode to silent or vibrate, there will be no shutter sound.

Doesn't work for the N models.

You might be able to add that CscFeature tag to your phone via ADB without rooting but I have no experience with that... my devices are rooted pretty much as soon as I get my grubby paws on them.
On my European SM-N950F Duos I used Tasker to set System volume to 0 when camera is open, then again set it to max when closing camera.
Try to put in a headphone plug (dont need the actual headphones) and attempt.

Ok, I get there could be privacy issues, but then how do you take pictures where sounds aren't allowed? For example in a library it is now becoming common practice to simply use Evernote to scan a page instead of going to the photocopier and making copies.
In quiet museum or at shows where photography is allowed all come to mind. If you can't shut off the shutter sound how are you supposed to take pictures at these locations?
Luckily in the U.S. it is a simple as asking Bixby to turn it off for you, but there are no settings to be found anywhere for it, so I wonder if she essentially does this work around.

Silly question, have you tried asking Bixby? I am guessing you have, but just a thought, as I said I don't have the shutter setting, but asking her to turn the shutter sound off did the trick. My Model is SM-N950U1 in case it helps anyone out there.

Yeah we know this already, read the thread, or even just the OP. Those who do not have this option don't have a US TMO variant.

DU Hellooooo00ooo,
Well, Hi there good people of XDA.
Using my S4 active for a good 2 months now (minus the month away fo replacement, water damage) but I'm getting really annoyed with the camera shutter and filming sound.
Looked on the whole internetz but could only find tips that didn't work.
So here's what I tried:
>> Phone needs to be rooted! > Downlaod "Note 2 hidden settings" from the market and disable shutter sound.
This works and is the quickest and most easy way to do it. You need to be rooted though!
>> "If the phone is rooted... goto root > system > media > ui
Under ui , rename the files shutter.ogg to anything eg shutter_no.ogg
do the same for camera...
Reboot....
Voila!!!! No camera sounds..."
This works when used with a ROOT explorer who can get W/R permissions
>>"If you want to remove it completely, try this app. It worked on all my previous phones.
https://sites.google.com/site/enforcedstreamsilencer/
You're welcome."
This didn't help either. (could install and use it but didn't change a thing)
>> "Click on the settings icon. Press it again for a window to pop up. Then select the most right tab and scroll down, you should see the shutter sound option. It should be second to last on the list."
This option isn't even there on my (unbranded) S4 active. (seems to be not available in some countries due to privacy stuff)
>> "If you are rooted, you can change the settings to give you the prompt on the menu. The file is root/system/csc/feature.xml. Change the "false" in the shuttersoundmenu line to "true". It will put the option on the camera settings menu."
This didn't work because when I tried to change the false to true it didn't let me save it.
So my question here:
Is there any other way to get rid of this shutter sound?
And if not. Am I doing something wrong with the file changing?
Thanks for any help in advance!

You need to use a root file-explorer and then mount the /system folder as RW - the options to do this should be in whatever root explorer you choose to use. Remember to remount back as read-only when you're done deleting, for security.
If you install the Xposed framework and then the Wanam Xposed module it'll offer the ability to shut off that/those sound(s) for you, as well as add a whole bunch of other functionality too. Highly recommended for such tweaks because it's easily reversible courtesy of a checkbox...

will test the RW thing tonight. Will let you know how it went

Xposed framework works fine for me on the i9295, but then it's a bit overkill for just disabling the shutter sound - if that's all you want to do, just use the file-delete method. I used ES File Explorer to remount the /system folder and make the change, and have had to redo it after every update of course.

That is unfortunately not true - Samsung is one of the companies that choose not to give the end user the choice to break the law.
Yes, in some countries it is apparently illegal to turn off the shutter sound, due to rampant upskirt picture taking and so on.

Really - although I should of course only speak for the Active since that's the device I own, I've heard repeatedly that Samsung owners have problems with this. Perhaps some devices are excluded - alas the international S4 Active is not.
Edit: I checked, and that option does indeed exist on certain versions of the S4 - not most of them, and not the S4 Active however, or at least not the international version. I'm guessing you have a regular S4 by the endline of your post - please note that this is the forum for the S4 Active, a completely different device.
Guys guys guys,
The shutter sound setting is there depending on country and their laws on those things.
At my S4 Active that option is not there, read the first post where I talk about changing a word from false to true to activate that option. Still didn't work.
The matter is solved for me but if you don't believe that there ISN'T a settings button... here's a screenshot

It's not entirely country-dependant - it's model and provider dependant. Samsung by default apparently removes the setting. A few providers in the US put it back in their custom versions of the phones - on the regular S4.
Don't worry, it's not an argument - I just think it's better if the real info is in the thread when people go searching for ways to fix this "feature".
i just change to silent mode on my s4 active int. version.
No shutter sound.

I like your ROM. Pretty good. If anyone installs this, first thing to do is: go to settings>apps>press on three dots menu>default apps>calling app> and set it to phone.
I found some bug.
Camera does not working without sd card.
The speaker is not active when speaking.
Can not switch between phonebook and sim card.
When you select the mms sound setting in the sound settings, it switches to the main menu.
I was able to disable media volume limiter through sounds settings for headphone and Bluetooth playing sounds, but when i watch Netflix, or any other video, it still gives me a message that listening to high volume media may hurt my hearing... It's really annoying! Is there a way to disable that message and if my volume is set to max, then it stays max for all my media players, either audio, or video?
Thank you in advance.
Would love to know this as well. It's annoying when I'm streaming on Bluetooth in the car and it's quite.

I could be wrong, but isn't this "feature" a requirement in the EU, and so maybe European models have the option disabled/removed, for compliance purposes?
(I hate it too, I generally use a headphone amp and/or hook it up to my car stereo - max volume on the headset is standard for me)
e: I should have mentioned - I have the UK model, and there's no 3 dot menu on that screen

So, I downloaded n app called shortcut master lite cuz I member here on XDA recommended it to fix LTE issues. Don't know of his name but I will edit with his name for credit. But I turned advanced LTE on(u must search for it).Did not notice any difference in LTE. Tried it initially but did not have VOLTE while making outgoing call. But when a call comes in and I answer LTE stays connected. So I went back into the shortcut app and looked up LTE Functionality. Found a setting in there which says VOLTE Test UI then in that setting I turned on the first 2 options which then have me VOLTE both on incoming and outgoing calls. Not sure if it breaks anything but I have mine off cuz not sure if it breaks anything.

How long have u been using it? I defiantly had issues.
Hi everyone, I'm using a note 8 N950N here and the camera don't have the option to remove the shutter sound, with root i am able to remove the shutter sound by removing the shutter.ogg from system/media/ui/shutter.ogg but for camcorder start, stop and multiple shutter it is still having sound,
Here are few things that i had tried,
1) remove shutter_multiple.ogg, camcorder_start.ogg,camcorder_stop.ogg
2) add in <CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu> in csc but still dont have the option to disable it.
Is there anything I'm missing here? is it possible that the shutter sound location for N950N is different compare to other version, if yes what could be the correct path?
Thanks

Hi, I am aware of the thread but the solution inside can't help me, or can u enlight me is there any solution in there that was overlooked by me? I open a different thread because my device is rooted while that thread the op obviously doesn't have a rooted device thus I'm expecting some different answer compare to that.
If you are rooted you can either flash a different CSC, or just delete the sound file.
Hmm. That is strange. Mine has the option to turn off the shutter sound in the options menu through the camera app.

Thanks

Before I had the toggle I removed the shutter ound file but I never throught to remove the sounds for video & bursts shots. On my F they are not named camcorder, they are cam_start & cam_stop. With the toggle, all the sounds are turned off.
Where & which xml file are you adding the csc feature line to?
