Does Contact Notes Field get truncated at 1.000 characters? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Could anybody please try to add more than 1.000 characters to the Contact Notes Field and try to sync in back to Google Contacts?
I still have the Huawei Mate 8, which has that problem since Nougat. The Huawei Mate 9 has similar problem, not sure what Mate 10 will bring. The problem is described in more detail here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-8/help/notes-field-contacts-app-displaying-t3418753
Or here:
https://support.google.com/mail/forum/AAAAK7un8RUYdC16dfv7ss/?hl=en
I'm thinking to switch to Mate 8 (Asia/Exynos Version), LG V30 or Pixel 2 XL, just because of my Contact data getting truncated and lost.
Could anybody please check, if there appears an obvious limit in the notes field within Google Contacts?
Thanks!

Alright, since nobody answered, I found the answer myself by walking into a Samsung store and trying it out.
The result: disappointing! The notes field is restricted to slightly more than 800 characters, even less than the 1000 of most older devices. So I guess, no Note 8 for me the then. Too bad.

I'm confused and wondering why you have 800+ in notes in contacts. Do you make a biography for everyone?

Something like that. I have over 4.000 contacts migrated through different technology/systems over the last 20 years of my life with corresponding updated information and contact notes for most of them. Some with more some with less detail.
But I'm not the problem. Samsung is. Since Google, LG, Asus or other vendors don't restrict/destroy basic features which I learned to rely on since years. And which get truncated with occurring data loss when edited locally on the device and synced back into my Google account.

I believe Google Contacts allows you to restore to a date, so perhaps your person-specfic novels (joking) can be recovered.

True that. But if you restore you would lose all newer changes and additions. And the truncations go back months if not years... So it's not really a practicable solution in this case. And also newer additions are not really a workable option, since you never know for sure when you would hit the character limit... I have that now with my Huawei Mate 8, where the function got crippled with the Nougat update... Unfortunately I figured that out only weeks later... That's why I'm researching a new phone without those restrictions.

Google Contacts was never meant to be a robust contact management system. I have similar history - contacts corrupted or lost to the mists of time, sync issues, 3rd party apps misbehaving (especially LinkedIn at least every other year), tried every 3rd party sync tool for Outlook going back to my Treo 270.
(Sigh)

Did you find a solution for this problem?
I'm having exactly the same experience with a Honor X...

[Q] Unable to unlock bootloader at 4.4.2, any solution?

I know there are threads on this problem with other Transformer pads, but I am wondering if anyone had this problem with the TF701 (WW)?
I just get the message about "Unknown error, might be network connection..."
Of course my network connection is fine, and I am using the unlock tool found at ASUS support site for the TF701. That is version 8.
I have tried this a couple of days, many times per day, it just gives me the same error.
I have read people with other Transformer models who contacted ASUS and gave them their serial numbers and MAC-addresses, which seems to solve the problem in some cases.
Others are refering to ASUS devicetracker (devicetracker.asus.com) which seems to be taken down, or is it just available in US?
I called ASUS, they never heard of the problem.
I am thankful for any help!
I think you ended up downloading the unlock tool for the TF700, not TF701. The latter only has one tool, version 1.
The former has the v8

Thanks, but version 8 is the right one. It's just called v 1.0 on ASUS TF701 support site.
Ok, in that case just keep trying. For some people it literally took 40 -50 tries and it worked all the sudden.
At the same time register your tablet on Asus VIP service, then conatct them and explain your problem.
The mismatched database entries was a big problem for many TF700 owners - haven't heard anything like that for the TF701 ever.
Send them a screenshot of your About Tablet page with each mail and ask them to check their database and correct the entry for your tablet.
Good luck

Thanks, I will do as you suggest and contact them via the support form instead of calling.
And I will continue hitting that button.
I just wanted to put in my two cents here. I've been having the same issues with the bootloader unlock tool for the last 3 months. I've called customer support numerous times and been told too bad. We don't support that. We don't care. I bought this tablet for its vast power but I am not even allowed to experience its full potential. I am deeply disappointed in Asus. It has been nothing but problems with this thing but through patience some have resolved themselves.
You're suggestion may have been the light at the end of my tunnel. I have never hears of the VIP support until now. I have done the same, registered and sent them a ticket request. I uploaded a screenshot of the screen saying password incorrect.
Here's hoping this can finally be resolved. If this fixes it, I'll be sure to tell everyone that's still having problems with the tool.

Yes, officially Asus does not provide any support as soon as yu mention "unlock". That's why people were telling them thry could not get registered for Asus Device Tracker (same problem: no s# in Asus database = no device tracker).
The VIP service people seem to be a little more receptive than general support. But it really depends on who happens to read your mail...
That's why you want to be persistent. Turn yorself into a polite and friendly PITA and don't forget to attach a screenshot to each mail you send.

Do you get "password incorrect"?
I think you have to turn off two factor login on your Google account. You may also have to log in to your Google account website and turn on "allow unsecured apps".
Does Device Tracker exist anymore?

I am not talking about the "Unknown sources" in Android.
I don't know the exact description since English is not my first language, but if you log in to for an example Gmail, then go to your Google account up to the right, you will find an option for allowing "unsecure apps".
I hope it was understandable.

I think I found what you're referring to. It's in the Google account management section. It's the area where you can make your internet experience immune to Google's pull. You can edit adsense settings, see your entire Google history, YouTube videos you've viewed all sorts of stuff. It's really cool, but unfortunately the boot loader unlock tool doesn't come up in that list of apps. That list consists of third party apps that have all already gained access.
If you're referring to yet a different screen, maybe a screenshot would be helpful?

If you are not using two-factor authentication this link should work:
https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps
And some info:
http://www.ghacks.net/2014/07/21/gmail-starts-block-less-secure-apps-enable-access/
But at least it seems you have access to ASUS servers when you got the "incorrect password" message.

I think I was getting the incorrect password screen because Google was denying the Asus app access.

Yeah, this looks like the classic database mismatch problem. Keep trying to use the app and contact Asus.
It really depends on who you happen to talk/email to. So don't give up. Just read about someone who bought an unlocked TF701 on ebay which was totally messed up and he/she got an RMA approved without any problem...
Ask for a supervisor, escalate it... If you're willing to give up your warranty - why should they care?
So I walked away from it. Came back and for sh**s and giggles I hit the button and BOOM the lock on my bootloader was blown wide the freak open.

[Q] Any issues with Chinese version?

I am thinking of ordering the enhanced 64GB model from a Chinese seller (ebay or aliexpress). This would be the Chinese model. The sellers state that before shipping they install a multi-language ROM and Google Play, and that it will work no problem on my network (Canada).
Does anyone have experience with ordering such a phone? I have looked at the relevant threads on the forums of other Huawei phones and there seems to sometimes be problems with notifications and Chinese bloatware. I am also unclear whether I can expect to receive future OTA updates?
AFAIK at the moment a P9 Chinese version distribution has not yet been announced... and for the P9 the official availability is tomorrow 16th April.
The P9/P9 Plus presentation has been initially dedicated only to the European market, also prices where indicated in Euro, even if that event was held in London...

all I can say is, even with the Chinese ROM, you can get all the google stuff without issues, with the exception being Now on Tap because the Home button is mapped to Huawei's own voice assistant.
i did have some issues with notifs on the Mate 8 but its since received at least 3 updates. My P9 is too new for me to notice any issues

That's great - thanks. My P9 is currently on its way so that's reassuring. I am not bothered about Now on Tap.
Presumably HiApp is in Chinese itself? Is it challenging to navigate around it?

it isn't in Chinese.. Once you've chosen English in your first setup step, all system apps show up in English. with the exception of bloatware. I believe there's a guide here on xda some place teaching folks how to download all the google stuff too. basically you'll need google play obviously, google contacts sync and google calendar sync. these are the basics you need to grab off HiApp. Then you can start using Google Playstore as normal to setup account etc
permissions are important as they are very strict and sometimes restrict first, and never ask later. be sure to check there often. Enjoy!
Just Got Mine Yesterday!
My P9 from a shop on aliexpress just came yesterday... and oh yes, it is pretty awesome! Going to use it a couple days and plan on doing a extensive comparison review to my LG G5 in my series of review called "Some Guy's Review..." I did one comparing LG G5 to the S7 Edge and people seemed to appreciate it... I have no brand loyalty so it a pretty honest review IMO
I try to sum up the general user / pro-user experience... what most people run into and care about.... plus stuff I always look for that are my "musts" for things I do in my daily life...
Not getting deeply into it, here's a quick 12-hour impression:
1. Design - It's a pretty phone, I got mine in Gold because the 64GB / 4GB only comes in Gold in China (EVA-AL10 Version is Chinese Version of EVA-L29 International Dual SIM). Let's say a Sony Xperia Z5 and an Iphone had a wild sexual encounter.... the result is a Huawei P9 (Basically an all metal Z5)
2. Snappiness - This phone rocks... didn't slow down even during setup... have yet to notice it heat up either! Have to put it through my grueling non-scientific testing of playing Clash Royale... hahaha. Really though, I won't do a AnTuTu or anything like that because those tests are pretty much meaningless to real world experience usage. Hope to have more later
3. Camera - have yet to take a "real" picture with it... tried it out, seems to have a lot of custom settings and a really good "pro" mode. more to come
4. Battery - seems spot on to all recent Huawei Phones, big, long lasting (that's what she said.... :silly: :good
5. EMUI - I am actually a fan of EMUI... especially with another launcher laid over (I use a HTC Sense Launcher Port). The amount of customization may annoy the regular user... but coming from having a Huawei Mate 8, I understand what you need to do to get everything working like you like. I will give more details later if it suffers from the "sleeping sickness" as I call it... this is where due to all the great battery customizations Huawei throws in, certain app notifications stop working after awhile because the app goes into hibernation and never comes out... time will only tell.
Look for a review probably Monday or Tuesday! I may even do a 3-way just for fun....!!! :good: :highfive: (3-way review... get your mind out of the gutter... hahaha)
I received my eva-dl00 yesterday. (Chinese Dual-Sim 32GB) from Ibuygou.com
Everythings seems to be ok, but Contact Syncing is not working. Any hint?
First impression: Nice phone, very solid quality! But coming from Vanilla....i don´t like EMUI.
Maybe i have to get used to it.
But the P9 with Stock Android would be awesome!
How are u finding notifications inflow? They come on time or with delays?? IMs like Whatsapp Telegram etc giving instant notification even when phone sleeps for 30 plus mins?
Seems to be ok. But it is only a first impression. Could be wrong.
Has anyone from Europe tried if the dual sim works for Chinese version ?

Having Issue With Stock Contacts App!

For some reason, when I try to edit my contacts in the stock Contacts app, I get that stupid "Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped" message. Does anyone know why this is happening, and perhaps how to fix it? I tried deleting the data & cache and force stopping it, but nothing works. I did end up getting a more stable contacts app called Contacts +, but I'd still like to get this resolved anyway.
Thanks.
I can edit contacts within stock app. Not sure why its force closing on you.

I C. That's cool.
I may just use Xperia Companion to reinstall the software then.
But will using Xperia Companion to "repair" the phone's software mean it installs the INTERNATIONAL firmware, or the US? lol If I get the US firmware then I'd have to get the software to reinstall the fingerprint software too b/c we both know Sony Mobile idiotically decided not to give the US version that.
It will install whatever you currently have on the device.

Ok thanks Augie!
I went ahead and used XC to do all that to resolve a few issues. Hoping it will do so.
I'm having the same issues, no way to reinstall the app either I've cleared the data but nothing. Maybe it's a region of use thing? Maybe the way contact files save in the US?

Yeah....... it could be any of those. It was suggested to me to just wait and Sony may very likely send an update to fix it. I'm using Contacts + for now and it's been working just fine.
I have the same issue on the contacts app. I have both the X and XP but somehow X works perfectly but not the XP. I even did a repair with XC and it still doesn't work.

gclancer,
Ok so it's not just me. lol I also did a repair with XC and yeah still not letting me edit contacts. I'm not sure what to do but for now I'm just gonna use Contacts + until it's fixed. If you figure out a way to fix it, please let us know.
I also notice Google Messenger, which always worked before on my Z3 and S7, doesn't work so well for MMS messages on the XP. In group texts, the recipients I send to would get my group response AND the same response would be sent to each one individually. But I went back to using Textra which is also great and now at least that issue's been resolved.

Tks Rockstar. I am actually using simpler dialer and contact app for now. I just find it stupid that my X works perfectly and the more expensive XP doesnt. Hopefully an update will fix it.

YW gclancer!
Yeah that is some BS. One guy on here who bought the int'l XP from the same retailer as I did said he doesn't have that problem anymore after using XC (he did initially though), but we still do. Don't get it, but yeah.........hopefully an update is sent out SOON by Sony to resolve this matter.

So I loaded both the X and XP with the same apps and it turns out the speed difference are pretty minimal despite having different processors. I am seriously considering selling the XP and just keep the X. But yeah hopefully an update will be out soon to fix your problem. I am using the X now and maybe its a keeper for me lol

My contacts app is working fine on the xp. Granted I started the phone through initial set up as a new phone. Not restoring any back ups during the initial process. I went to the contacts app and it was working correctly then I imported from Google account after the fact.

gclancer,
Yeah but for me, it's not just about the speed. I love having the IP65/68 rating as I sometimes have to take calls while in the shower (I leave phone near bathroom door, not in shower lol). I'll step out and take them with wet hands and face......so for me, the XP is a must since the X doesn't have that feature. Being slightly faster is not a big deal, you're right there........but I'd still prefer it.

MGS,
Yeah the 2nd time around (maybe 1st too?), which was when I used XC, I made sure to choose the option to set up as a new phone too. I didn't really have any backups to restore anyway, so this was the only option. Yet when I went to the Contacts app it still wouldn't let me edit random contacts, though everything else worked fine with it. So not sure but since everything else is fine with phone, I'm just gonna let it go since I now use Contacts + anyway and it's much more stable.
I have been having the same issues. I have tried factory resetting it different ways. The sony bridge repair tool does not even list the Xperia X Performance on its list of phones yet. So, that's a bummer. There's this site that gives you 4 ways to do a hard reset. However, on the 4th method where you are asked to download Sony's flash tool, the X Performance isn't even listed on the supported devices.
I do wish that Sony sends a fix immediately.
mac,
I returned the phone (which had other issues too) to my Amazon seller (NGP) and the replacement they sent me this morning came ALREADY set up. Normally I would be mad about that, but the Contacts app WORKED! Didn't close out when I tried to edit it. I wanted to make sure it was fixed though, so I did a factory reset, and ughh........ it's not working now again. I e-mailed NGP and asked them to tell me what they did. I hope they can tell me so I can do it too and fix this. I will keep this thread posted.
You're right, it's very annoying! MGS told me he factory resetted but didn't use backup during setup or even log in with Google account, and it worked for him. But when I tried that........nope! Even tried creating a new account, and nope! Very weird, but again I hope NGP can tell me what they did.
Mine seem to work alright, I can edit the phone number and or contact details.

I did factor reset, in the store, I just briefly set the phone to test it for dead pixels and other functions, after that I reseted it to do fully setup with my own data.

Bought a used Note 5 today for the wife, no Google Account restore upon setup

I guess I just assumed this was always an option, it has been for all my devices. My wife's Nexus 5x took a fall today and while I wait for replacement parts I bought her a used Note 5 for temporary use. During the initial setup I was surprised it never asked to restore from a backup on Googles servers after she added her account. So now she has to go through manually and re-add all her apps.
Am I missing something, is this not always an option?
Thanks!

Older android version means older google apps installed means feature you want is not available on older gapps.

I actually was playing around with the phone and I put Google information in during the new setup and it gave me an option for both my phone and my work phone. I'm starting to think maybe my wife just didn't have a backup account set up on her phone.
Regardless, I fixed her Nexus 5x and I will be selling this phone now

Do not buy mate 10.. Or anything by huawei for that matter

The cliche of Chinese products being flawed is unfortunately extending even to well known brands like Huawei which I was hoping wouldn't be the case.
Not long ago I returned yet another dysfunctional piece of kit from a Chinese company and I'm on the verge of returning my Mate 10.
If I knew better I'd also return my Mate 9.
The Mate 9 has had a lot of issues (GPS for example) and for me, ruining my holiday, the random inability to change network settings to allow data roaming. Only a back up and hard reset which took the best part of a day worked.
Now the Mate 10 has the well documented horrific flaw of not updating widgets. What's worse is there is COMPLETE silence from Huawei over this issue despite repeated attempts through various channels for a response by me.
My phone is pretty much unusable. Widgets are the crowning glory of Android and the reason I jumped ship from iPhone and stayed. Without reliable updating widgets the phone is little more than a brick.
With my two experiences with Huawei phones I can categorically say that they are just unreliable sub-par products sadly.
My Samsungs have all had hardware issues (battery related), btu at least whilst they were intact they worked flawlessly as advertised, fit for purpose. The Huaweis are not even getting to the stage to be used enough for the hardware to fail as they are just not fit for purpose - far too buggy.
I hope I never touch a Huawei product again and can only hope that the competitors build phones with specs good enough to compete.
ok

Thanks for the feedback. Perhaps the 10 Pro is different.
For me and for many others (check the threads) this is a big deal that is as yet unresolved even with yesterday's update.
No problems here with my Mate 10.
Using Huawei phones since 2013 and no plans to change yet.

Hehe I could do, but I don't hate Huawei really, I just wouldn't recommend people buy their products based on my (and a whole multi-page threadful of) experiences on the flaws with this phone and Huawei's comically bad response to it, which so far seems to be "if widgets do't work that's not our fault - they are third party apps - you wouldn't buy a car and put a truck engine in it so why are you installing widgets?"... no BS, check out the thread. They are ridiculous. But nowhere near as Apple and their deliberate slowing of phones. My Mate 9 actuall gets faster with use - exactly as Huawei claims., They do do some stuff right!
The widget updating issue is frustrating, but rooting (as I explained in the thread) solves the issue by letting you freeze the responsible system app. You may not want to root -- and I agree that you shouldn't have to root to fix this issue -- but you might be a much happier camper if you did.
Mate 10 pro here and no problem with my widgets.

Not sure which Widgets you use, but it's mainly the scrolling types that freeze up.
Ok. No scrolling widget. Will try my mail widget later.
Had a p9 since they first came out and now a mate 10 pro. Best phones I have had and don't see any of those issues. Neither of them were rooted either.
No problem on my mate 10 pro. It's strange this message. Just now that the all patriotic America has fear of other smartphone maker. There aren't just apple or samsung...

Ah... it's such a big thread it's got to 12 or 13 pages now (yes guys.... this is a big problem and no i'm not the only one) that I must've missed your solution. Every solution' has come back a couple of days later with "no sorry the problem persists". I'm open to rooting if need be I'm just scared to do it largely because mine is a CHinese one with an international ROM put on it, I have no idea how that will pan out. Or how it will affect other aspects of EMUI. Might be going down a rabbithole there... might be best to return it and buy... well... there's nothing else that comes close to this sadly Grrr.
