Reboots after I remove the batter

What the heck is going on?
I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with the ROM, because it did this with the factory ROM, Manila 2d and now WM6.5.
I turned the phone off, unplugged it, removed the battery. I put the battery back in, replace the cover and press the power button. Nothing happens. I plug the phone back in to the wall charger and put power, it turns on....for about 3 seconds then reboots and it would seem that it will do this for as long as I let it go. If I unplug the phone while this is going on, it will die.
The last time this happened, it took it about a day and a half to sort itself out. It almost seems like its a battery issue.
Any thoughts or ideas?

UPDATE!
I took the sim card out of the phone for a few seconds and the phone seems to be working now.... But its been up and running for about 20 minute now with no sings of acting up.

mine started doing that today. went to use the camera and it reset then when it came back on it said battery was drained(this happened around 1pm and i always get a full day out of battery) and reset. have it on a charge right now but will not turn on. took out battery and put it back in with no luck. i will try to fully charge battery and take out sim. if all else fails i will try to hard reset. thanks

tried to charge the pda all night the light stayed orange and never turned green indicating full charge. tried hard reset and when it goes in to prepare rom it shuts off like dead battery. when i plug in the pda to charge battery and then turn on the phone it freezes on splash screen. if i turn on phone then plug in to charge it acts like i havn't pluged in charger. is it the pda or battery?

I am not 100% sure on this, but to me it sounds like the battery.. and that is a MUICH cheaper option to test out... unfortunatly you ahveto wait for shippng typicalyl unless you have a friend who has the same phone.. I got 2 backups and a stand alone charger now... The other option could be your USB port... I have not heard this specific problem with them.... but I am a PC tech and have seen very simmilar problems with laptops... Usually the first think to for is the power port... Just like out phone, if the device is not on a flat surface and such when it is plugging it, it tweaks the port and it eventualyl breaks... on laptops it is not uncommon that when plugged in, the LEF wil light up saying it is getting power to charge, but it enver charges the battery, and even sometimes can;t power up the full system.. .It sort of sounds like this is what you phone is doing as well.. .If that is the problem the stand alone charger would work (my son broke off his usb all together and now syncs via bluetooth and jsut changes batteries.. he has 3 himself as well) If you search online, you can usualyl find a kti with a battery or 2 and a charger/dockign station for under $20US total. tried bootloader and installed official att rom and never shut off. when it was finished with install same issues appeared. help

For anyone facing this issue I would not recommend wasting money on a new battery as this issue has been around with few users since the Kaiser "Tilt" first came out and I've never seen ANY reports that a new battery fixes this. People have bought new batteries, fully charged their battery from a docking station, tried their friends fully charged battery all with the same result. I had this power down issue a Looong time ago my first week in with the Kaiser and managed a fix and am using the same battery now. Although it seems the battery is not being fully charged it's important to leave it charging until you'd assume it's fully charged and get into bootloader mode and flash an official htc Tytn 2 rom. It should flash completely, and the fact that it does not die immediately as on normal boot indicates it is not the battery but the rom. It did take me the whole afternoon of Flashing, recharging and repeating before it finally kicked in. Also, from reading older posts, it seems most if not all users like myself fixed this by flashing the older official htc wm 6.0; worth a shot at least.

Yup, that is what I had to today (I hard reset, actually), with barely enough battery life to do this.
Then the bloody unit came up and was charging - amazing, really!
(Was using the official HTC 6.1 upgraded WindowsMobile OS)

here is my 2 cents....
I owned five Tilts, replaced four of them with warranty issues ... so i have faced this dilemma on at least two of them.
First see if the USB tongue is loose. To do this try to gently tap it with the stylus. If the tongue inside the USB port is loose then you will be facing rebooting and other issues and troubles in the future. The USB tongue gets used and jerked every time you connect your device to your PC or wired headset. If you are still under warranty and the USB connector tongue is loose I recommend returning the phone ( if you still can) and getting a replacement. There is no easy fix for a loose USB connection tongue as i have taken one apart and it is very difficult to repair or replace and very easy to mess it up further.
So, my advice to all Kaiser owners... be careful when plugging and unplugging your phones through the USB. Do it gently as the connectors are very fragile.
For those that have the above issues, I recommend using a separate battery charger tray, avoid plugging the USB as much as you can, and if you must, then administer extra care. The rebooting will stop if you plug the USB cable to the device and move it up and down a hair then holding steady. And most likely you will not get a full charge or even a partial charge. The biggest culprit to this problem is car chargers, and second, is inserting the stylus by mistake (when it is dark and hard to see) in the USB port instead of the Reset hole by accident.

[Q] Battery icon with a ?

When I try to boot my touchpad I get a battery icon with a ? In the middle. What does it mean and how can I fix it? I googled it and all I saw was people saying they had to send it to HP.
I finally had this device running perfect on CN and loaded 10gigs of ebooks on it less than a week ago. I guess if I have to webos doctor I will but it won't go into download mode. Also if I have to send it to HP will they refuse it because it is modded?

I'm in the same situatuon . I bought a new battery to replace what I thought was a bad battery. I put the new battery in and booted to the same battery with question mark symbol.
Desperate to fix my touch pad. Now since I've opened it I can't send it in for repairs. I'd like to fix it myself but can't find any spare parts. I'm thinking it might be the charging board.

I have read that this happens if you let your battery die while in Android. Actually dont know if it happens in webOS too. I guess it fails to recognize the battery after completely draining. I read someone getting it back to normal by removing the battery and charging it externally, however that is accomplished. Did both of you have your TouchPad run out of battery?

Yes mine did unfortunately run out of battery while running android. I have tried charging the battery externally. I even bought a new battery for it. Both were charged as they powered up and displayed this battery with the ? symbol. So it's not the battery.

i got the battery with ? mark all the time when i forgot to charge and it drained turned itself off, simply let it charge(do not unplug) and it should auto boot into cm9 or webos(this usually take half hour or so). if that doesn't work, read post #31 to get it work. good luck.

Did you get the battery with the ? mark? Or the low battery symbol. I have gotten the low battery before and just charging would solve that. I have left the Touchpad on the charger for days at a time with no luck. I have tried every available charger besides the touchstone. I know it's not going to just charge eventually. I have already taken it apart multiple times and replaced the battery and/or manually charged the battery. When the battery is re-installed it boots up to the same battery with ?. When I charge the battery to close to full manually the battery / ? icon stays on for hours then starts a boot loop sequence with the same logo.

i must have gotten the low battery symbol and thought it's the ? symbol. Have you tried "Press and hold power button(while still holding power button) keep press center button for 15 times?" to see if you could brought back the low battery symbol.

Yes, it does not work in this mode. There was another thread where a guy had two HP Touchpad's and confirmed it did not work in this mode. He was doing it correctly on the working touchpad but did nothing to the stuck Touchpad. I have tried it with no luck.
I'm stuck, I don't know where the problem is if it's not the battery. I'm out $35 for the new battery and still don't have a working Touchpad.
The thread in the original post has a guy willing to experiment with JTAG to repair. I'd be willing to send mine to him if he does find a solution.

have you tried to put back your original battery and try the Hold power then press Home key for over 15 times method?. what about disconnect the battery and see if it would even turn on at all?.

Hey kklown, I'm the guy from that thread, just started searching around once more to make sure nobody's figured something else out, and sure enough nobody's been bullheaded enough to plow through it yet.
I still want to invest into a JTAG box of some sort to recover my touchpad, and a hard bricked Evo 4g I still have. I will look you up when I get one (should be within the next few months) to keep you posted with progress. At the very least, it would be nice to know whether or not it's doable.
Anyway, if anyone knows anything we don't, be sure to speak up on this thread or the one I started at webosnation.

I'm thinking about getting a Li-Po charger just to keep trying to charge the batteries and hope that it will eventually work. I have 2 batteries now so it wouldn't hurt to charge one and plug one in for testing.
If you do get the JTAG to work I'd be willing to ship mine to you and pay you for your work.

Well, for me, I could leave it plugged into the wall charger that came with the touchpads, and it was definitely charging. I tested this by propping the touchpad's power and home(center) button so they were pressed, and left it for a few days (rebooting consistently when I left it). When I came back, absolutely no response from it, put it on wall charger. After a few minutes I unplugged it and rebooted by holding pwr+home, and it only had enough juice to show the battery question mark for one second before turning off the screen.
FWIW.
I'm waiting for my barely used Droid Razr to sell, and when it does the money from that will go to a JTAG box. Anyone want a mint Razr for ~275? haha.

I wonder if this has something to do with not charging the battery to 100% on first use. Was that the case with of you? Just a thought.

I've got the cash finally, going to make sure I have the right JTAG box before I purchase. Will update when I get it.

For sure! Ordered a Riff Box tonight from Hong Kong via eBay, should be here around 5/11-16... should be fun to mess with.

HP replaced my touchpad, their tech support sucks I had to give my credit card info to someone overseas and even tho it wasn't charged I had to do it to send it in. After an hour or so arguing with the dude I gave him my number and he then submitted the ticket. They sent me a box and pre-paid next day air label and the whole process took a week or so before I received my replacement.
The issue I had (Battery Symbol with ?) Occurs when you let the battery drain to 0 while booted in Android, doesn't matter what ROM you're on so don't cuss out our great devs.
The (Preventative)Solution: Use an app like "Tasker" to shut down your device at 5%.
I actually haven't accomplished this tho... Tasker confused me lol. I doubt every ROM dev is gonna include this "power off at 5%" "feature" because everyone wants to sip every last % of their battery. Maybe a flashable mod could be made or something but that is beyond me since I couldn't even figure out Tasker.
If you CAN'T send it in to HP for replacement then the jig stuff you guys are talking about is probably your only hope.

Well I tried manually charging my batteries again.... I don't have a Li-Po charger so don't know if that would fix things. It does charge the battery I am powered up again but still have the battery with ?.
I figured out that the gold button on the mother board is a shut off switch. If you hold it for a few seconds the device will shut off. Sometimes it will also turn the device on but so far it's been very unpredictable.
I'm going on vacation and really wish I was able to fix this thing so I could watch some movies on my almost 6 hour flight. Guess I'll have to resort to my Motorola Atrix with LapDock.

Good info about the gold button! I went and re-read some of a thread on webosnation about where the touchpad expects the battery firmware to be. Totally forgot that it was on the integrated flash storage... so if that's the issue, getting the file on there is the easy part, IF I can figure out a way to interface with the integrated storage.
That's the next piece to figure out anyway. Don't think the JTAG box will be used for that, but who knows, haven't found much info for reading/writing from embedded storage directly. I'm hoping that with the right pinout and maybe extra parts, I can use it as a usb drive or something.

about 2 months ago i modded my buddy's touchpad for him and everything worked fine. well he brought back the tp to me and saying its stuck and it wont work for some reason. also i am not able to charge with any usb cable it keeps saying
"to reliably charge, use the cable and power adapter that came with your device."
i just want to charge this thing up and remove classic nerd ics from it and simply make it stock web OS cause its become too laggy and glitchy for some reason and i dont know why. well to be honest i havent used it much this is feed back from my buddy.
i just need to get this back to web OS in a couple of hours cause he is a truck driver and needs it on the road. please let me know thanks

In WEBOS it will only charge with an original charger just so uou know..... in Android you can charge with most anything but anything less than 2amps and 5.5 volts is just gonna trickle charge
As far as the Android install it probably just needs an update and clean boot but if you took the time to tead you would find that WEBOS DOCTOR is used to wipe android off the Touchpad

So is the battery dead or are you able to turn it on? The TouchPad needs a certain amount of poswer to charge the device. Thats why the TouchPads original charger has such a big adapter. You chould probably get a slight charge with other chargers but it will take a long time to charge.
As far as android being buggy, I would suggest the same as cdzo72 and just reinstall it. And also like he said, the webOS Doctor will get rid of android. There are also apps in preware, I believe, that remove all traces of android after you uninstall it.

the battery is dead and it wont turn on im trying with orignal hp touchpad charger but there is no power...what to do next ? like its completely black there is no power at all not even a battery sign of charging or anything like that

I'm having the same problem as stated. My battery completely drained. When tried pluggin in it gave me the message "plug in original charger" which I have except for the cable. On the home button I had no chargin light. After a couple of hours I tried turning it on pressing power+home and I got the red battery, then immediately the plug in symbol, then the "plug original charger" message.
Then I decided to plug it to my laptop. The home charging light finally came on stating that it was charging. It's been a couple of hours and I was able to plug it back to the original charger on the wall and the home light continues to show that it is charging. Unfortunately, I've tried to turn it on and I still get the message. I'm going to let it sit for a while to see if it's just not charging fast enough to even power up. I am running CM9. Not planning on going back to WebOS anytime soon. If I get it working, I will let you know.
Oh, if you have the original wall adapter, you can unscrew the actual plug off the adapter by turning it counter clockwise. Then screw it back on. Supposedly that will fix something with the actual wall plug. I don't know if that's what caused mine to actually work again.

If you regularly charge it with a Touchstone charging stand, take it off, and plug it in through the outlet and the cable that came with it, and be sure to try charging in WebOS instead of Android.

Dead Screen or Nearly Dead Battery Issues

Okay, first thing to mention is that I have searched for information on my issue and while I have found (and tried) solutions that approach my goof, I need to post this:
Last night I finished reading from Kindle app, hit the power button to shut off the screen and laid it down. I know I should have plugged it to recharge but too late now. I am running CM nightly from 07172012, so I know I didn't download the nightly CM battery issue versions.
This morning the screen will not light up; I have tried charging it, hard reset with power and home screen buttons for 15-20 seconds (and longer), and nothing works. My concern is that the screen is dead. I connected the touchpad to my laptop and I get the connection sound from the laptop; it sees the TP but does not accept it as a portable storage device. Device Manager lists it as: QHSUSB_DLOAD with driver(s) not loaded.
When I try the volume rocker button I do not hear the small audible ping as volume goes up or down. Of course, with the resets, who knows where I am in the OS (or even if it is WebOS or Android).
I really didn't want to be a noob and post this, but I need some advice from the brethren here on XDA. Thanks in advance.

It seems to me that it's not even booting if your getting that strange device in device manager. Try the webos recovery tool from hp. It may help. Although it will wipe android off.

my son-in-law is in the same boat. Nothing he does wakes it up. I believe there are tp's out there with this hardware issue. I let my tp battery drain completely. It powers down around 4% battery. I place it on the touchstone, it charges backup and boots into moboot, then webos. I've done this twice. no problems. If it's under warranty still, send it in.

If you have a touchstone charger put it on that and leave it for a couple of hours and it Will come back to life.

I've had multiple instances of black screen of death failure.
The latest one I had, I was able to restore by using a standard USB to micro USB cable (and recently NOT the HP OEM cable) to connect to the computer I usually use to sync or use HP web doctor with.
Same symtpom as the OP, get the three dings when connecting the touchpad to the computer, no responses and the QHUSB driver load error. HP charger wouldn't chage it, touchstone would not charge it.
Anyhow, I left it connected for a few hours to charge connected to my PC. Then, I disconnected from the PC using the large USB connector and reconnected. Whamo, got to the bootloader.
I believe what happened was I trickle charged the touchpad enough to get the touchpad to boot.
You can try the various hard boot keypresses too, but wait for a few hours while trying to trickle charge the touchpad via the computer USB.

Update
Okay, so I followed the old rule of doing the simple (and/or free) solutions first and then move on.
1) I set the touchpad on the touchstone for several hours yesterday - no luck
2) I connected the touchpad to my pc through the USB and let it charge - no luck
3) I let it be plugged into the standard charging plug all night - no luck
4) I prayed to the great old god Cthulhu - no luck
My only option remaining is to use WebOS Doctor. One question on that: in all the literature I have read thus far (and perhaps I am mistaken), I need to be able to get the TP into USB mode to download the corrections/reboot back into WebOS. Is that right or can I expect that when the doctor sees the mangled mess of an OS through the USB connection, it will know what to do?
Again, as always that for the previous posts and for the support.

Another piece of black magic that worked for me and is worth a try as it is free. Connect Touchpad to standard HP brick charger plugged into power outlet. Unplug cable from charger, count to 5, plug it back in, count to 5, take it back out. Repeat the cycle until you get bored or until you get a red charging symbol. If you get the latter then let it charge up normally and you are back in business. The theory behind this method is that it takes a few seconds on plugging in for the circuits to realise they "shouldn't be charging" and this allows a little bit of charging to take place on each insertion. Repeat enough times and you get enough to kick start the proper charging. In my case about 20 times did the trick.
As I didn't want to get into this situation again I then set up a Tasker process to power down th eTouchpad if the battey charge dropped below 8% and I've been OK since.

RIP Touchpad / EOT
Well, I had to wait a day to get my hands on a WinXP laptop; I upgraded my Dell to Win8 about 3 months ago and WebOS Doctor does not play well with Win8.
While that time passed, the touchpad finally gave up the ghost. There is no power left in the TP. When I run WebOS Doc the laptop cannot see the TP connecting via USB. I also checked by connecting the TB to the Dell, since it would at least see the device. Not any more.
My thanks again to those that responded. I did try the plug in, plug out with 5 second waits between, just in case. You never know. However, after 50+ attempts I had to call it a no-go.

does your home button light come on at all? Are you able to see moboot bootloader at all or are you able to start the tablet in webos recovery mode by holding the vol key while powering it on? are you able to ./adb connect? Also I've never had much luck with the resest method youre using, holding down the power and home key, I always hold down the power key and press the home key 15 times, when I get hard freezes and lockups, it's always worked.

Mine is in the same boat for a couple of months, removed battery and charged. Boot loader is borked I get only get a qualcomm usb device but nothing thats of any use for webos doctor or qualcomm tools. We'll have to wait until someone figures out jtag or how to replace the bootloader with qualcomm tools. I'm amazed with the number of touchpads out there that something hasn't leaked from hp to fix it. Anyone got friend in hp or qualcomm :angel:

OP Update
Well, I thought this was a dead issue but here is the latest.
After wallowing it a pit of despair the likes of which can only be described as wretched, (I even coveted my wife's TP up close, almost giving into temptation and swapping decals to reverse ownership) I looked outside of XDA and did general Google searches and happened upon this site:

After reading a bit I realized that the touchstone may be able to recharge the dead battery even though fully drained. I began the quest that Friday morning the 24th of August, after verifying that my Dell laptop did not see the TP when plugged in via the USB cable.
I just did a quick check and the laptop now "sees" the TP when connected. Still no luck on booting into Moboot or the USB icon screen - neither Power and Volume Up or Power and Home buttons achieve anything. But I am glad to see that the touchstone has placed enough charge into the battery that the laptop is aware of the TP when connected.
I believe that given a few more days on the touchstone I should be able to boot into moboot.
@ haxin - I have nothing. Not a single light from the Home button - my only evidence that there is SOMETHING going on is when I connect the TP to the laptop and get my connection "sound". Again, I have high hopes that the touchstone will get me where I am going, albeit at a snails pace.
@ paddy - Yeah, I hope that when (if) I get to a lit screen, I am able to move past where you are at. My big concern is that I am toast even with a semi charged or fully charged battery from the touchstone.
I will update later on. Again, thanks to all for the input and probing questions. You have made me think harder and work a bit longer on this project.

OP Update - 31 August
After 7 days on the touchstone, the touchpad is currently showing the low battery charge icon; I have now plugged it into the A/C adapter.
Each morning I have picked up the TP, held down the power button and held the home button for 15+ seconds. Today it worked, turning on the screen for the first time in a week and letting me see the low battery image.
In my quest to resolve this issue, I have read so many variations on what buttons to hold and how long to hold them that after awhile you end up considering the possibility that SOME of the button options are not correct. That the operator has booted their TP up, but they misconstrued the actual solution; how else can you explain the idea that HP built so many different button combinations and hold times to boot a TP from a nearly or fully dead battery state?
Anyway, I will continue to post updates until my beloved TP is back to running CM9.
And to all those who gave their TP up because the battery got too low; find a touchstone or other "trickle" charger solution, connect and let it sit for a week or so.

Glad the Touchstone worked for you , don't know why it has taken so long to charge but when your up an running properly Llama is a good app to install as
A:You can set alarms for when the battery gets to a certain level/levels
B:Have it shut down when the battery gets to a certain level.
I use 20% for an alarm and 10% to shut down which allows me to sleep easy and not worry if someone else is using it . .

I am up and running. I most definitely will load that app on my TP, plus my wife's and a coworker who bought a TP because of mine.
I don't know either why it took so long; I am just glad it worked and I have it back. I am on it right now.

HP Touchpad sleeping and will not turn on
Just a note to those HP tablet owners who experience the Black screen of death or sleep of death.
I am the proud owner of 4 HP tablets and two of them so far have had the black screen of death. I have read forum after forum trying to get answers to this problem. There was only one posting that has made cense to me. Someone posted that the tablets symptoms are very much like when the Phones use to go to sleep. The solution was to disconnect the battery for a few minutes then plug it back in. Then simply hit the hold the power button down to turn on the tablet.
The problem is taking the TP apart. There is a video on youtube on how to disassemble the tp. It is a little annoying that you have to go to such lengths to reset the hardware but HP will charge you 250 dollars to fix the problem. After you watch the video on how to open the TP, remove the 3 little screws holding the battery. Now slowly pry the battery up, they use double sided tape to hold it in place along with the screws. Wiggle the battery side to side and try to disconnect the battery connector. This can be done without removing the boards in the TP. Wait 1 min then try to replace the connector in the socket. It is on the underside of a board so when you have it in place use something to make sure it is tight. Plug the charger in to the USB cable. Without closing up the unit hold the tablet power button in until you get the battery charging symbol on the display. Let the unit charge while it is still disassembled. Just in case you have a problem. Once everything is operating disconnect to charger and replace the battery screws, now snap everything together.
This was the only way I was able to fix two of my four TP's. I am sure I will have to do this again because my kids always let the tablets go dead and they don't pay attention when placing them on the Stone for charging. If the tablet is not properly placed on the stone the tablet will not charge.

I realise this is an old thread, but I recently had a reoccurrence of the black screen of death issue and thought given the number of touchpads still out in the wild, I would share my experience on the off-chance it may help somebody.
My first experience of the black screen issue was a few months after having my touchpad (many years ago). The screen just went black and no combination of holding the reset keys for any period of time would restart the unit. I had suffered lock-ups before and found the reset combination to be successful, but this time none of that worked and I had effectively what appeared to be a dead unit.
Having contacted HP, I returned the unit under warranty and a unit was returned working. I say “a unit” as I was never quite sure if it was the same unit or a refurbed unit, but to be honest given the speed the units went out of stock during the fire sale, I was just glad to have a working unit again.
Well this week after several years of use including the installation of Android, the black screen occurred again. As before, no combination of the keys / holding for a period of time / pressing them a number of times etc had any effect. The unit was three quarters charged and I was using it up till the point the screen went black. :crying:
Given that the unit has no warranty and it was “dead” anyway, I decided to take it apart. Despite watching YouTube videos, this appeared to be more troublesome than I thought, but eventually I was in. Interestingly, the backlight on the screen was still lit, suggesting the unit was still powered. I did consider disconnecting the battery, having removed the screws as per the previous poster, but mine seemed to be well and truly stuck down and I felt I may damage it prying it away from the base.
However, looking around inside the unit, I spotted what was clearly a surface mounted switch that faced upwards towards the back of the screen. Out of interest, I pressed on this switch with my finger nail and my unit powered off (shown by the backlight turning off). I then pressed the normal power switch and the unit powered up as normal. I have attached a photo of the switch which resides close to the popout tab with serial numbers on that can be found on the right hand side of the unit.
It does appear strange that HP put this “reset” button inside the unit, facing inwards rather than outwards where a small hole in the back of the case could be used to press it. So if you do get to the opening the case stage, consider this as an alternative to prying the battery loose. Also if somebody can work out a way to make the button accessible from outside the case it might be a useful modification.

Oh I was so keen when I came across this post. A Reset Button! How great would that be?
Tried it, unfortunately it did not resurrect my dead as a doorstop TP. I was so hoping...
I just put a 'new' EBay battery in it a couple of days ago and tried trickle charging with a 1000mA charger for 24hrs. No joy there either.
All I get when I plug it into the PC is that it shows up as a "QDLoader 9008" (QHSUB_DLOAD driver) .
No flicker of life or light whats so ever...

Try to borrow a Touchstone conductive charger if you can. It's the only thing that has worked for me when it has totally drained down.

That's what I was thinking - no joy there either... It is not even showing signs of getting the least bit warm.
I keep thinking and hoping that there is some way to resurrect this one but I may be wrong...
It's currently trickling on a 1000mA charger. Tomorrow I'm going to try the Touchstone behind it.
If that doesn't start something then I'm going to yank the new battery and along with the old battery charge them like an RC device.
(if I can ascertain the proper way to do that --- )

After several days on the trickle, still no life.
Took it apart at lunch and with the battery still connected to mobo it is showing 3.1V across the red/black. So I figure the battery
is good. Looks like the mobo is gone.
Not sure what else to try.

Asus Memopad (me176cx) dead?

The tablet is dead, it was suddenly. Won't charge or turn on and it's not recognised by the PC. Recovery mode (power button + volume-) doesn't work either.
I know that is not the screen, because the PC doesn't detect the tablet at all. I tried with another battery (my wife has the same tablet), but I had no luck. I also know that the charger and the usb cable are fine.
What else I can do, any ideas or suggestions?

Are you using the OE usb cable? Have you tried charging using the OE wallwart?

Yes, I'm using the OE usb cables (I have 2) and the OE charger.

I had the same symptoms after disconnecting and reconnecting battery,I hed to disconnect it for like an hour and then three times try to power on the tablet and it did power on. Maybe your battery is dead so after another hour you may try to use the other battery. If it will work, try to connect the batteries together so the dead one can get a little charge (but do some research I am not sure if it won't have a chance to damage anything) then the same after an hour connect try power on and if it powers on immediately give it a charge.

Just wondered if you had tried this and if so, how you got on? Asking because I bought my daughter one off ebay and it was working fine when I got it, am sure I recharged it once , she played it and then again in morning and thinks she played it till battery ran out. I have since tried charging via pc and mains power, and have disconnected battery twice (case was v. easy to remove so concerned this fault may be reason it was sold), but cannot get a flicker of a response on screen. i got my daughter this as she was desperate for an android tablet for mods for minecraft as I had bought her a Amazon Fire 7 and from what I could see just after xmas, it wasnt possible to root it or sideload at that time, and she said Amazon had no mods compared to the play store and she had been ecstatic with the mods she had found for her android for the short time she had it. I do know when I plug it into the wall charger that the motherboard area gets warm if its been plugged in for a while? Bit of a noob on this stuff,and off sick with probs with my nervous system so my concentration and memory can be a pia. Anyway I was wondering how I can find out if its goosed or what I can try? One of the batterys advertised on ebay is about £50 which seems steep to me, esp. if it doesnt fix it, and esp since I have been unable to work for a few years cos of this illness. I only bought the tablets cos I had extra money after I finally applied and got pip, and got it backdated. Any recommendations for a reasonably priced option for her for her minecraft? Should I go the tablet\notebook type route or can they not handle minecraft? Bit confused by these new notebooks esp touchscreen ones as new ones seem to have small amounts of ram yet are v. popular.

Firt I would try to trickle charge the battery.

BEFORE YOU DO THIS:
Remove the SD CARD. I forgot to do this and snapped my card straight in half removing the back cover.
This started happening to my ME176 as well but of course not until after I retired it and gave it to my mom.
I would start by letting it sit on the charger for about 30 minutes (since we don't know the current charge state and if the overcharge block is functioning). This will give it a slight charge if dead.
Disconnect charger and remove the back cover and disconnect the battery (as posted earlier). Push and hold the power button a few times even though there is no power.
It may take a few tries of disconnecting and reconnecting the battery before it decides to power up, so keep the cover off while doing this.
