Is there anyway to root or downgrade this so i can install a ROM any ideas? because otherwise, it's just a piece of junk that is annoying me.
Negative on root and not for the foreseeable future. I actually just sold mine the other day. $30. I bought it for $20 used, put a tempered glass protector and a case on it. All in all, if you got a decent deal on it (or if you still have the box) you can get pretty much all your money back selling second hand.

Yep - easily sold an unrooted 5th gen on CL. Still have a pair of boxed 5th gens with 5.0.1 bootloader that I might unload before the batteries go bad. While Fire 7s are quite serviceable (especially with one of @ggow's custom ROMs) I prefer the crispness/responsiveness of higher resolution screens on devices with at least 2GB of memory. Several options in the $50 USD range satisfy that criteria. Still use my remaining Fire 7 on occation; has never let me down.

I am partial to (used) 3rd gen Amazon HDX devices. Bootloader can be unlocked opening the door to a full suite of custom ROMs. Hardware is far superior to anything in the current Fire line-up.

Any current hardware you would recommend with stock android? I see quite a few other tablets in the $50 range now. . .and all three of my boys have destroyed their tablets in the two years they have had them (one fell off a car, another cracked in a backpack, and the other got stepped on). Two are still in use with screen protectors, but they should get replacements. . .but without root, not really interested in the Amazon devices anymore. . .

Sounds like your boys are tough on electronics. In that case a HDX would not be a good choice. You might be better off going with a prepaid handset such as the Motorola G4 which can be had for <$40 at Walmart. Don't activate; just use as WiFi gizmo. Better technical specs than any 5-7th gen Amazon tablet. No root - but really isn't needed w/Android 7.1.

Hm. Thanks. So 5.5" screen instead of 7" it appears. . .not sure lack of root is an option to lock down with Kidsplace properly.

Sorry - it is the E4 which is a slightly better device than the G4. You can compare specs online. Following link valid in the US as of the date of this post. Perpetually 'out of stock' online but usually available in stores. There is no further up-front commitment if not using cellular service (not does it matter if Verizon is available in your area). Note I'm not pumping this device; just offering it up as an example of what's available per my original post. May or may not meet your needs.

I want to get the best deal on one of these, is Craigslist the place?
Or should I buy new for $250? or are there some going for 200 new?
Retail, you'll find them new for $250. (I haven't seen them go on sale)
There was a deal on B&N's eBay store (that only applied to ebay purchase) for $50 off... making it $200. But that deal has since expired.
After that there is the Craig's List or ebay route to take your chances and buy a used one.
Although I'm sure most people will not have problems, I wouldn't buy a nook over ebay or craigslist and I'd spend the extra $50 for new. That way you have full warranty for one.
That's true. I'm trying to convince my mom to get one but she keeps saying that there will be much better technology in a couple of months...
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
There will be... for 600-800 bucks.
Though the new resistive Coby model looks very interesting for $170.

yeah, but that's like saying you should get a galaxy tab or Xoom over a Nook. For the price there is nothing like it. Sure in a year from now we might see more, but in two years from now, we'll see something twice as good as that, so it's all on when you want to get into the game. I personally bought the nook with the thought that a year or year and a half from now I'm going to upgrade and spend the good money on a good one (if I still want it)
There is always something better coming out tomorrow. You just have to figure out what it is that you want in a tablet. I for one wanted a tablet to mess around with a decent price point that has android on it and i can download some apps and have somehing to easily browse the web. I originally bought a archos 101 which is a very cool product but after a couple of weeks I realized i couldn't stand the viewing angles of it, i mean i could barely stand to look at it in landscape mode and it was unbeariable in portrait mode as it just messe with my eyes. So i got the nook color and the screen is fantastic. I've rooted it and installed my favorite launcher and some simple apps that i enjoy using. Plus the great thing bout the nook color is a lot of people are hacking it and developing roms for it and someday hopefully we will have a nice version of honeycomb to play around with.
This may or may not be of help to the OP, but, there is a $15.00 Gift Card offer available for Referral.
With the Groupon B&N GC, I made a small purchase and along with it a free trial of B&N Membership; also I registered my NOOK COLOR bought from B&N Ebay offer. Not sure, which one triggered it, but I received Email from B&N with the above offer.
So, you may want to check with your friends near you.
Regarding purchase for your Mom: her age, eyesight and nimbleness of her fingers, would be a major consideration to make sure a 7" tablet will suffice. Notwithstanding, these factors for older people, I feel this is the best bargain in its price range.

Do not buy it.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
honestly I wouldnt buy it used.. I was considering buying one on craigslist and decided to go to the store... this is why i wouldnt buy it used..
My first nook.. returned it in less than an hour because it had rippling of the LCD beneath the digitzer.
My second nook, returned and exchanged it 6 days later because the bezel was creaky, volume button would stick on the + and it had horrible light leaking on the bottom right (Almost like a big yellow arc you could see at night no matter what brightness setting it was set to).
Now i am on my third nook color.. This one has dust underneath the digitizer between the LCD, creaks alot too..
Based on my experience i would highly recommend spending the extra bit of money just for the 14 day return\exchange policy coverage.. the quality control on these devices sucks.
I have no troubles, but highly recommend getting one new, just for the peace of mind of replacement if there is a hardware problem.
I think I'll pull the trigger once (hopefully) the B&N-Ebay discount happens again....I was on the fence last time last time it had a $50 discount.....
Mine is just perfect out of the box, not any single problem, love it so much.
Would anyone be able to recommend a reseller that ships to the UK? Or one that's based here preferably.

E Bay NC
Got a $200 one on E Bay from B&N New, tried booting Froyo from SD. For some reason the MicroSD went in between the back cover and Chassis. Since I had to take it apart to extract the card, and probably voided the warantee
I decided to go the auto-nooter route and use the sd for storage. Thr back does seem a little creaky now, but everything works fine. Hate those micro sd's, already lost one, and broke another.

I have a current model Coby, with the resistive screen. I don't like it. I'm use to the touch screen on my OG Droid. Also have a NC and I think it is a good tablet for the price. I couldn't see paying $600 for a tablet, especially if I bricked it from messing around with it.
it is true, the dev community for the NC is so much larger than the Coby community.

Thanks; the new Coby (shipping from Amazon soon) adds multitouch and a front camera, so it mimics the iPad2 to a tiny degree. Unfortunately I still don't know any retailers that carry it locally so I could see just how bad the touchscreen is. (I've used Windows Mobile resistive screens, and I think they're fine!)
Is it safe to order yet and NOT get a bad dock? I am debating ordering one from Amazon, but not sure if the dock issue is truely fixed yet.

Yep, tried to exchange it yesterday but the option to exchange was not available since it was under review. Got to exchange underway this morning.
My experience with Amazon's return policy is great. They give us 30 days to return items. And they cross ship so we dont have to ship the return back until the replacement arrives.

Well, I ended up buying a Surface Pro instead. Too many issues with the TF701 to feel safe ordering it.
I have a Dell V11 5130 with battery keyboard and completely impressed with it. It ironically does not have an sd slot on the keyboard like the 701. In spite of this, best device I have owned and would never thought an x86 Windows device could have 15 hours of battery life (counting keyboard).
Still would like the 701 for my next Android device. I might wait for price drops.

After Holiday deals, I got the 5130 with battery keyboard for $532, so too good to pass up. Display looks IMO better than the 701, due to better brightness and contrast. Only a 1080P display though, but very good none the less. Equal to my iPad 4 as far as display quality. Plays Unreal Tournament 2004, Halo 1, Burnout Paradise, Street Fighter 4 Arcade and all my emulators (MAME, NullDC, PSP, PS1, etc) all smooth as butter. Best device so far I have owned besides my S4 It even powers a portable Bluray player with one USB connection and no power supply needed. Watched Zombie Land
Enough tangents- I will wait to see if I can find a 701 discounted once the other devices are released. Whenever that may be? I might hold out for a 64GB model, but rare product.

You exactly pinpoint the reasons to take a look into that device.
For me gaming is not that important since I use the tablet complementory to my laptop. When travelling (I do a lot for work) I only take the tablet due to weight reasons inside my handluggage.
Next to that the formfactor (tablet with dock with extra battery) is very important while travelling for more than 12 hrs on planes etc. were the total time of travelling sometimes goes up to 24 hrs and that is why good battery life is very important to me.
So the connection problems with the TF701 were me giving quite some problems when using it on my lap on the plane for 8 to 10 hrs vice versa to Chicago last November. Very disturbing watching a movie btw.
So when Asus not solves this problem I will use my TF700 for now and probably go for this Dell or an upgraded version with more memory. When reading about the astonishing batterylife it gave me a big smile and reading your experience made me more smile.
I would not favor an I5 or I7 version because they are not optimized for a tablet and have a fan in the tablet to cool it causing poor battery life.
Unfortunately my replacement dock from Amazon is yet another 2013.10 build with connection issues. Trying again.
do people know you can set outdoor mode for extra brightness? i find it super bright when i put that on.
if not just pull down top menu and tap the sun.
i know a user on the jp forum was complaining about this then we told him of that and hes happy now.

It appears Amazon is denying replacements of the keyboard dock now. When I requested a replacement for the second defective dock I received an email stating I would receive a refund rather than a replacement.
Amazon said:
Hello,
I'm sorry to hear the replacement ASUS TF701T-DOCK-AD02 Transformer Pad had the same problem as your first order. This usually doesn't happen. Since it's likely another replacement would arrive defective, I won't trouble you with another replacement.
I've requested a refund of $135.15 for the full amount of this shipment, including any shipping costs. You'll see this refund to your original payment method in the next 2-3 business days.
You can view the status of your refund in Your Account here:

Okay, I jumped the gun a bit. After a couple email correspondences with Amazon Customer Service they apologized for issuing a refund rather than an exchange. Hope I can get a newer batch as it looks like a couple others have had good luck doing so.
So i'm thinking about selling my nexus 6 on a facebook community buy/sell.
I usually give my devices to my family, but its not needed this time so i'm after some opinions on how much i should be asking for.
The phone is 3-4 months old, i lost the reciept recently but its around somewhere... 32GB, bought outright, so unlocked from any network, in perfect working condition. etc, there's just like maybe, 5 to 6 tiny little dints in the screen from keys in pocket :/. You literally cannot feel them, nor see them when the screen is on and takes certain angles to see them when screen is off (thats the only thing wrong with the phone, which i plan on telling on my post). I paid $876 AUD, do you think i could ask for $400-$500?
Opinions? If you were going to resell, what circumstances would you lower the price for & if you were i, how much would you ask for?
amazon is selling the n6 brand new at 399 for the 32gb version, so your $400-500 would be considered a joke, especially a device with a little bit of damage.

But Amazon is still selling it for much cheaper brand new. Most prospective buyers will look on Amazon first to see what prices are for both new and used.
What local retailers sell them for brand new means nothing when it can easily be attained somewhere else for a cheaper price.
I normally give people hell on those Facebook groups for asking entirely too much for a phone or tablet. Especially if it is used with even the slightest damage.
For instance, a woman was trying to sell a Droid Maxx for almost $400 USD claiming it was new and never pulled from the box, but her pictures clearly showed otherwise because of the damage on the phone and the fact that it didn't have any of the factory protective film on it anymore. The device in mint condition used only goes for about $150.
Basically, it's better to be fair instead of thinking you can charge top dollar for it. Much less troubles in the long run.
Good luck.

I agree with checking eBay or local buy/sell/trade sites for prices to get a feel for how much it will cost.
Note this, however: Amazon Australia does not sell the Nexus 6 that I can find. It is true that there was a Prime Day deal today in the states for it (pretty sure it's over now), but Prime Day is only for the US site, not for the international versions.
Plus $500 AUD is $368 ish USD.
Mate. Put it on Gumtree. You could likely get around 400 to 450 bucks for it if it is indeed in the condition you say.

Yes - as been documented elsewhere in this forum in multiple threads. Always check before downgrading as bricks are a common outcome with Amazon devices. Only certain versions can be rolled back to specific levels. 5.3.2.1 is not one of them (source or target). Sorry for your loss.
If the device is still within warranty contact Amazon for courtesy exchange.

Also consider a refurbished device from Amazon Warehouse. Aside from packaging indistinguishable from new and typically arrives with older firmware. Price is nice too.

Best Buy typically matches Amazon's promotional pricing, plus local returns. Same models as found online.
I bought an Amazon Fire 7 for my 80+ year old dad thinking it was like any other android pad such as those from Asus and so on, only to find it (the fire) is a conduit to the Amazon sales dept. You can't even start the thing up without an Amazon account, to their defense, you don't have to give your payment info up front, but everything else... yes. So I am returning it to Amazon, as I have had no luck other than installing the Play store, that gets a little glitchy with account issues. Every fix, or root process is for OS's lower than the 5.6.0.0 that is on this device. So does anyone have a favorite Android pad suitable for my dear old dad they could recommend? I'd really appreciate it. What about the RCA Voyager?

Tough to answer as everyone's needs differ. I could easily suggest several older Amazon devices equiped with custom ROMs which make excellent Android devices at favorable price points (banging this out on a 3rd gen HDX rocking Android 7.1 that will run circles around most contemporary phones and tablets). But that involves some work on your part with questionable benefits once all is said and done.
I have a fair bit of experience with seniors and gizmos. In most cases simpler is better. Suggest a used iPad mini or (wait for it) a stock Amazon device like the Fire HD 8. While both may make YOU hold your nose pop will probably be quite happy. Good luck.
