Time for stock. - Google Chromecast

It seems like it's time for me to flash stock. Bought Google Home and my rooted chromecast with old firmware does not support voice control.
Just wished we could get that latest working firmware and freeze updates from there. I think it would be sufficient version. (maybe)
Keeping one rooted for fun if something ever comes up.
So far I haven't had any use whatsoever for rooted unit but it was at least fun. [emoji16]

[Q] Are you staying on 4.2.2 and keeping root or taking the plunge to 4.4?

I just wanted to know if most people are giving up root to get the upgrade to 4.4 or if they're holding out to keep root. Yes I know the developer edition is different, but for most of us, it is a question worth asking. I will be staying on 4.2.2 as long as possible. I dont think kitkat is much of an improvement after getting the updated google apps and keyboard. Im sticking with nova launcher and my belover xposed modules. If you upgraded, do you regret upgrading?

I don't see any need to have Root on the Moto X.
Which, I'm surprised, fits me... and from what I've read, many others on here.
i'm thinking I would go crazy not having something to play with if I lost root. Haven't completely made up my mind but that's they way i'm leaning

I'm about where you are right now. I used to be a crack flasher, but prior to getting the Moto X, I had settled on a really nicely configured version of AOKP on my GNex. I said good bye to the device last week and upgraded to the X.
I haven't rooted my Moto X just yet, but I really would hate to give up the X specific features when going to another ROM. So, I'm waiting a few weeks before I do anything. Hopefully the bounty will work!
Got developer edition so I could root later if/when needed. But I had used one unrooted for about a month, and other than ad-blocking and tethering, I didn't miss root.
I am staying on 4.2.2 for now. I hate ads and the extremely ugly call interface. Xposed modules and full screen caller ID is what I like. Not willing to give them up just yet.

I am in the same dilemma. I have root and running Eclipses ROM and some exposed framwork. I want KK, but can't decide what to do. It might be a while for root and nitro had to sell his X. I just don't know what to do haha. Guess I'll hold off for a week or so and then get KK.
Staying on 4.2 indefinitely, even if 4.4 gets rooted. I have 4.4 on my N5 and I'm not a fan. My Moto X is perfect the way it is, why mess with it?

I need Xposed too. I'm giving root on the MotoX a chance for a few weeks. When Xposed Framework works on KitKat--then I'm going to make the choice and decide whether to sell my MotoX and get a Dev Edition or just upgrade to KitKat and get over the rooting stuff--which bothers me.

Who are the major exploiters? Jcase is one, Hashcode is another... other than that--I can't think of anyone. :|
I went ahead and factory reset the device and then updated to 4.4. I then installed the new Google launcher and some of the new Google apps, like the new Google Wallet. It works surprisingly well but the only thing I hate about it is that I can't hide apps. The new launcher doesn't support it but I like the design of it. I am just going to stay unrooted for now and root it when the exploit comes out.
I'll take KitKat when I can (T-Mobile). I'm currently not rooted. The only thing I really wish I could do on this phone that requires root is block the ads. But for me, the trade off to that is not being able to get work email on my phone (company uses Good for Enterprise, and has it check for root). Also, I'm Dev Edition so if I get super sick of the ads I can root later. (Trying to avoid unlocking the bootloader right away though.)
Decided to flash 4.4; this is my first Android phone and I didn't buy the developer edition to play it safe .
Overall I'm happy: both with the device and KitKat itself.
My only gripe so far is fairly minor (the lock-screen lag) -- in my case: clearing the dalvik cache helped a lot.
There's nothing in 4.4 that's begging me to stick with it; but so far I haven't had any show-stopping bugs, and I'm not going to flash 4.2 just to get MotoXposed working.
So for now I'm just poking around until an official T-Mo OTA comes out that I can flash.
Nope until 4.4 gets rooted and os is stable like current unlock problems and all. Cant image my phone without adblock, viper and xposed modules.I am more than happy with 4.2.2

I am sad.

This place is dead. Generic S6 forum is not much better. We have root, but nobody is doing anything with it.
Yeah.. it's seriously making me think of switching devices. I'm used to many custom roms, unlocked bootloaders, xposed, etc.. and this isn't cutting it for me. Sure, great device but.. I'm just not feeling it.
What is it you are wanting? We have cleanrom and a few other debated options and an available framework to let you customize the crazy outta your touchwiz. As far as AOSP or CM, give it time. It's a new device, a lot of hands are on it and after some time, more options will be available. When I bought my G2 on release day, it was a month before root and another before good rom options showed up and even longer before stable rom options we're brought to the table.

I don't understand why people buy a phone like this an expect a ton of development on it. Everyone knows AT&T locks bootloaders so there will be no AOSP ROMS for this device, especially with it packing an exynos processor. The root exploit has been patched in 5.1.1 so don't expect root unless you plan on tripping KNOX or never upgrading again. People really need to do research before they go out and buy a phone. If you need that much development, buy a nexus.

Exactly. I knew this going into getting another ATT phone (Active). It was either getting a phone I knew would work out of the box or getting a toaster oven with an 810 SOC. HTC and LG both failed this year IMHO and OPO2 will also be throttling back the 810 2.1 SOC. I wanted the active because of the bigger battery, but if those wanted ROMs on a S6 they should have just bought an international model outright.
I bought this phone expecting no development. The fact there's even root and roms for it is more than enough for me.

I went from a Nexus 5 (chronic flasher) to a no root Note 4 (now obviously s6) and I discovered that not having root or a million roms to flash caused almost zero issues. Having root and debloated roms on the s6 makes me completely happy. I just flashed XtraStoLite and it's awesome, even more customization and you choose only Samsung apps you want.
I haven't even rooted yet. Works fine for me. First phone I didn't root right away.

Yeah, the issues that made me feel like I absolutely had to root in the S4, S5, N4 are pretty much non issues with the S6 so I'm happy not rooting.

Probably the built in themer.
For everyone: when you buy a phone with a locked bootloader, you buy a phone that will have very limited development support (if a hack is found all the better, but don't count on one being found, they ain't easy to find). If you buy a Lamborghini are you going to complain you can't put the turbo you saw on your friends Mazda on it?

Alliance Framework and soon 3minit. You just need to flash a deodex ROM and to top it off, we are now seeing that you can flash roms from the international thread. I will attempt this myself 4th of July weekend and post videos on my channel if successful.
Honestly I think it's quickly getting to the point where rooting will be an afterthought. I rooted my S6 Edge and flashed back to stock within a week.

It's not hard, most are just an Aroma installer. I'm running one and it works great. The only weird thing was the Aroma installer screen flashes while you're selecting options you want to add/remove. I have an ATT S6 as well.

So I can Flash the deodexed ROM linked earlier with Flashfire then add the alliance framework with flashfire too? Still Kinda new to this(Had the s4 rooted and never flashed anything till after getting the s5 which was rooted with a custom ROM) and it seems like its a different method every phone. Im trying to read up on the different threads but dont have much time usually. Need to take a day and figure it out. Thanks for the help.
I'm not asking for cm or aosp (neither appeal to me), and neither do i want some shoddy kludged together community rom.
What I'd like is to see something like Xposed,,which works without issue on a completely stock+root install.
I've been doing this since the G1 days, and i just dont have the time or patience for it anymore. I have a hobby that to me, is far more satisfying and fun than jacking around with phones.
All i really want is to remove the volume warning and the redundant wifi notification.

Xposed is in alpha or pre alpha for TW devices. So it is in the works, just a ton of bugs and the install is pretty in depth at the moment.
Don't know about the volume warning, but the WiFi notification is easy if rooted. Get the CSC editor and search for WiFi. Blank this value and reboot.

I have up on roms (TW or AOSP/CM) based a long time ago due to glitches and bugs. The last thing I ever did with root was adaway but now many all developers and websites are getting content past adaway and ABP, so no point there even.
I had a problem with my Tab S not taking the lollipop update after rooting then un-rooting which kind of soured me it in general. I got it flashed back to stock at bestbuy and updated, but settings menu still shows status as Custom even though download mode shows Knox 0x0

What is taking Samsung so long to update to LP 5.1.1 ?

I heard that LP 5.1.1 is the most stable. We are stuck in 5.0.2 on Note 4. So is my Tab S. So is my Alpha phone. All at 5.0.2
Why is Samsung so slow? I think they might have abandoned us.
Samsung screw up on Note 5 and all the updates are slow.
Its a bad company.
It's not Samsung. They updated. The update is now with US carriers. They are holding it up. Sprint, I believe, already pushed the 5.1.1 update to their phones a couple weeks ago.

I heard from an a distant uncles girlfriend, second cousins best friends brother we should be getting it very soon.
There are a few 5.1.1 custom roms available. But if you are not rooted or you need T-Mobile features, you'll have to wait for T-Mobile to push the update.
Best decision I ever made was to install a custom rom. I currently have 5.1.1 and do not have to deal with the ever slowing TouchWiz. After StageFright was announce the very next day the developer of the rom i'm currently using patched it up, the only downside is I did have to sacrifice Wi-Fi calling but soon enough Android M will come out and that will fix it.
geez cant you wait, you see the C is getting the update, and then you make unnecessary threads about the update, just be patient..
if you cant wait, ill buy your note 4 for 200$ :victory:

Been using PopRocks v10x and it is amazing, fast and stable. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...procks-rom-v1-tw-rom-bases-tmo-stock-t3096286 ). Now if you want to try 5.1.1 there are many choices to choose from and can recommend them all.
Just me, but I think Samsung is in no hurry to push it 5.1.1. I guess there mentality is if they (note 4)users want 5.1.1, buy a note 5, which for me it ain't happening.
My note 4 came with 5.1.1. There should be a few customs floating around, such as TekXodus.
Samsung and the note 5 is very disappointed. I will stay on Note 4
FUN FACT:
Tmobile already has 5.1.1 and it is installed on Note 4s with the SM-N910T3. You can buy it in the store right now or warranty your phone and get it. Both of those options will be faster than waiting for the carrier to release it.
Tmobile gets a thumb down for this move. Uncarry that update Uncarrier.

WARNING: PingPong Root Users Do NOT Update to 5.1.1

I have gotten a few private messages plus some people have posted on the threads with the updates.
Do NOT update to 5.1.1 if you want to maintain root.
After days of tinkering, here are your possible outcomes (none of which are what you want):
A. Continuous soft reboot after upgrading via FlashFire updates.
B. Use ODIN to flash the system/boot partitions or properly done FlashFire update... Hoorah! You're on 5.1.1, but your fingerprint sensor and LTE are dead - plus no root.
C. You try to downgrade after B, and you no longer have signal under any circumstance.
Personally, I am now just going to flash the OI2 ODIN files in full and be done with it until a new root method is available. Sorry guys, I have tried everything that I can think of. As you can see above that something in the 5.1.1 kernel/system images require the latest bootloader which is what allows us to downgrade and get root from OE2 using PingPong.
There is a possibility of a new solution soon enough... see progress here for other models of S6: UniKernel
Yeah I ended up tripping knox in my attempts at working something out. Fortunately I was able to revert but thats only because I didn't dare try and flash the bootloader or modem. Man this is like a sick mind-game. I wish I would have had more experience with Samsung and AT&T before I bought this damn phone. This is my first phone on AT&T and my first Samsung. It was the perfect **** storm... I never anticipated this bull****, after this long... And I can't even get rid of the damn thing. Nobody wants it.

Forgive my ignorance here...I've not kept close track of the progress of unikernel. But it was my impression that without a custom recovery option, we are entirely SOL regarding custom kernels. Gah! I don't even use custom roms. Stupid Textra App has this ****ty ghost notification that does not work on 5.0.x android. I would go to 5.1 unrooted but I just can't stand the thought of not being able to get rid of annoying notifications (wifi, etc). Plus all the custom easy hacks. So lame. Never going AT&T again. Why do they make it so difficult anyways? Tmobile doesn't.
They make the majority of their money from enterprise customers. These customers desire the locked bootloader as to avoid security risks. Since this is AT&T's main source of profit this is their main consideration. In short this phone and its software was not designed with our consumer use cases in mind. We are merely an after thought. I have waited too long I am jumping ship, just ordered a Moto X Pure and as soon as it gets here I am leaving this phone behind. Had it since launch and haven't been able to accomplish my original intention since then. Never buying from AT&T and also I am staying far away from anything with an Exynos chipset. Touch Wiz is a lag fest nightmare. For this to be pretty much the most powerful chip in the mobile space and to experience such a lag on it is truly unnerving. Samsung is all too eager to jump the Android band wagon all together and probably intend to do so as soon as they feel their tizen offerings stack up. And I sincerely hope they fail miserably. They are a good hardware company but they should just give up on software. They just don't get it at all.

Amen. Well said. Bravo.... I feel your pain. My first real SmartPhone was the Fire Phone with AT&T, exactly a year ago, and I took its enema for 10+ months before I finally decided to just add payments for the S6 and finally have a good phone I could root. So now I'm paying for both, and the more I search for help and answers on here, the more I feel like my kind aren't welcome. Not by the community, but by ATT and Samsung. Gee thanks.
Well, at least I have a new phone... I'm totally down to build and burn a 5.1.1 effigy with you, if you want.
Well I have already given up on this phone. See my post above. My sister has already agreed to take over the line and the phone payment and I just bought a Moto X Pure outright yesterday. Just waiting for it to arrive now.
I've been thinking of just doing an Odin back to stock (unrooted) and OTA update up to the newest 5.1.1 on my 925a for a week or so now. For anyone that is already on OI2, how is it working out for you? Is the phone still slow at times? Does the memory issues still exist?
I recall seeing an app a little while ago that is able to freeze/disable apps without root. What was that app? Has anyone tried doing something like this? How did it work out?

Is there any worth to not using a custom rom

I'm ordering 2 of the 7" tablets for my 4 and 2 year old kids for some games and videos. While I understand the benefit of CM or slim I guess, is there any reason not to leave the tablet stock? Looks like if it arrives with the 5.1.1 I can still put on CM12 if I decide later. I just don't want to have to deal with no vibrations, no camera or whatever other feature doesn't work of that is the case. Or maybe these bugs have been resolved. If I don't want to change too much of the tablet, couldn't I just install Google play store and go from there? Or is it really that much better to prevent the update to 5.1.1 if it arrives with a prior version? Remember these are kids who will use it here and there. If it was for myself, I'd probably root. I just feel sometimes custom roms have their quirks, which is why I like the nexus line.

Thanks for the feedback. I had a few more questions. I believe I saw you can disable ota updates to 5.1.1. If I wanted to try out the stock system if I get a lower version is this the recommended approach?
If I went to cm12 is this step still required since the bootloader is locked and I want to prevent future updates?
Since I ordered two, can one backup serve for both of them or is there even a need to backup a branch new tablet? Can I just get a factory image to put it back to stock if need be?
Thanks in advance

If I got another Fire under version 5.1.1, I would immediately block any updates. It sounds like it would be unlikely at this point.
I have one for my 2 year old as well, mainly for movies but she's really gotten into several toddler learning games. I left Fire OS (5.0.1) on her's and blocked updates, rooted, and installed the Play store. She can navigate and choose her game readily with Fire OS, it seems more intuitive for her. She could only pick icons on the homescreen with CyanogenMod. I look at blocking any updates as "future proofing" since I'll likely update to a different ROM once she has better coordination using the tablet.

Assuming you start with 5.0.1 and want the intended Amazon experience, you have two options which will leave the TWRP option open:
1) Keep 5.0.1 and disable OTA. Recommended, since you'll probably figure out in about 30 seconds whether you love or hate the interface. If you hate it, moving to 5.1.1 won't make you any happier.
2) Upgrade to 5.1.1 FW + 5.0.1 recovery as detailed in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/howto-install-fireos-5-1-1-root-gapps-t3265594 and then disable OTA.
I personally could not stand the stock FW and in general I do not allow billboards into my home.
Edit: Forgot to answer your second question. If you let Amazon do the uploading for you, they will install their 5.1.1 recovery, you will lose TWRP, and you cannot downgrade to a TWRP-able version yet. The game we're playing right now is you have to keep 5.0.1 bootloader on your Fire at all costs.

Well I guess to a certain point this topic is meaningless. I was hoping to get a version under 5.1.1 but I did not, at least on the first device i opened. So I guess I need to at minimum block updates to 5.1.1 and install playstore. So I will have to find some threads on how to do that.

Slip seems to be the only custom ROM that supports SD cards over 32GB, so that would be one reason to keep the stock ROM over CM or AOSP at the moment.
I was able to get 64GB and 128GB cards working by formatting them as NTFS rather than exFAT.

FireOS v5 works well for many, has integrated parental controls and is arguably more approachable for some communities. While installing Google's Play Store/Services is one option (you'll find several how-to threads in the forums) also consider an alternative marketplace like 1Mobile which emulates the Play Store. Sideloading and Amazon's own Underground app store are also good resources that don't involve messing with the device.
Used super rep o script to add in playstore. Didn't root. Wanted to block updates but saw that requires root so I'll look into if I'm going to do that. Right now for the price and even with the odd launcher it uses, the thing works pretty well. I only with the parental controls would include any installed app. Looks like only Amazon app store apps can be selected.
