How to get Android one version without project fi - Moto X4 Questions & Answers

Is there a way to order the Moto X4 Android One version without paying for the Project Fi service? I want the Android one software but would like to use it on my own Verizon mvno.

I think if you don't activate it with project Fi you won't have any bill with them and could activate it on any carrier.
Yes, there are other versions available, but if you are specifically after the XT-1900-1 Android One version, I think is only available through Fi.

Will the Android One version work on Sprint? I'm wondering because my wife has ordered the Alexa version from Motorola and we're on Sprint but thinking about switching to Fi. And I don't think the Alexa version works with Fi, correct? I think if we get her the Android One and use it on Sprint for now, we have options without having to buy her another phone if we switch. Thanks!

Correct, they have the same bands, just different software. So the project for one can be use on Sprint, but not vice versa.

Actually according to the Project Fi guy on reddit the Alexa version is 100% compatible with Fi. I'm to new to post outside links but if you search the ProjectFi reddit sub for "Will regular Moto X4 work on Fi" or "Does the Alexa version of the Moto X4 work with Project Fi?" you will be able to find more info.

Wait, what? Can you purchase ANY version of the X4, and it will work on Fi? That reads to me like you don't need the Android One version, but any variant of the X4 will work?

Yes.

I can confirm that my Project Fi Moto X4 purchased directly from Google work on Verizon wireless.
I picked up two of them as I am able to trade in a couple of Nexus 6's and receive a decent credit amount towards the purchased phone(s).

If I buy the one from Best Buy, would I be able to flash the Android One firmware and get updates?

Eventually, should be able to. Once we have root. And TWRP (or some other recovery). I'm not surprised if there is a way to flash things thru ADB with the new partition structure for Trebble.

Can someone here who does NOT have the Project Fi model please post your build, firmware, and baseband versions?
If someone is willing (non Project Fi), also do "adb pull /system/build.prop" and PM me a link to that file? (let's not clog up the thread with it)
We have a root method, but trying to determine if it is variant specific.
Thanks!

Non-Android One, Non-Amazon Prime, North America (USA). Near USB port says Model:XT1900-1, Type: M2997
Build number: NPW26.4
Firmware: That's what build number is, right? If not, let me know. "Motorola Version" says: NPW26.83-34-0-1
Baseband version: M660_7020.05.01.52.01R PAYTON_NA_CUST
Build.prop saved using an app from play store, and put in zip file. Attached.

[Q] Which Moto X ROM?

Having bought a Moto X off eBay that's preloaded with an American Movil build, I'd like to upgrade that to something more current. Assuming I can figure out how to flash it in the first place - haven't had any luck getting a reply to this proposed flashing process yet - what build should I apply given that it's an XT1058 device intended to be used on AT&T's network. I can apply the AT&T ROM, of course, but that reportedly comes with bloatware.
And in an ideal world, I'd get my OTAs from someone other than the carrier; currently America Movil, maybe AT&T in future. Is it possible, for example, to apply the Developer's Edition ROM to an XT1058 device, and if so, would I be likely to be upgraded more quickly? If not, does anyone have any recommended builds that are compatible with AT&T's network that are better than the AT&T ROM?

I would suggest unlocking the boot loader, flashing either cwm or twrp recovery and finally flashing superuser. Keep in mind that unlocking the bootlaoder will void your warranty.
The benefit to this route is you will maintain root access, also you can easily flash Roms without the problems that cone along with pwnymymoto and safestrap.
Cm10.2 is around the corner and there's already a T-Mobile ROM that has the camera update included

I would like an answer to this, if anyone knows.
I want to get a colored one through at&t, but I want the developer's edition rom with their OTAs. Kind of like how people are making their carrier HTC One's into google play editions.

don't think there is a dev edition rom to my knowledge. I haven't really read much about people saying the dev editions had anything different besides and unlockable bootloader which you don't have so you will only be able to flash roms through Safestrap if you haven't taken any OTA's yet.
While it should have been obvious, it's worth letting people know that the AT&T ROMs disable tethering. Again, most people probably know this, but coming from Nexus devices it hadn't even occurred to me. So if there is a dev edition ROM floating around out there where this isn't disabled by default, I'd love to see it.

There is a Dev Edition ROM and it is the exact same ROM as the T-Mobile ROM which is the only Retail ROM.

Only difference for you then is one is newer than the other. So use the newest (48i).
Further info: ALL Nexus 6 can use the same ROMs. The only difference is that some US carriers have specific ROMs to add functions or just so they can approve the builds themselves. So you just need to avoid the Builds that are specifically for T-Mobile or Verizon IF you want OTA to work in the future. Otherwise, you could use any.

Flash Android One (Project Fi) to regular Moto x4?

Hi guys,
Is there an option to flash Android One (Project Fi) to regular Moto x4?
Reef2009
Not now, but I really want it. Is very dificult to get a Moto X4 version Android One outside of USA... :crying:
No, but a guy in the custom roms thread was able to flash the retail Moto x4 ROM onto his Fi phone (as a last resort to recover his bricked device).
I really want this feature in moto... As I don't know the regular moto will get updates like Android one or not, as I know obviously the Android one get updates faster but the regular version will get same updates even if its late or if the Android one version will updated we can update the regular moto with root and custom recovery. Thanks in advance for your answers.

I don't think you'll ever be able to apply Android One Updates to a Retail model phone (even with root and/or custom recoveries). They are just too different in some basic /system features. In fact, right now; just rooting the phone screws up your ability to apply the updates for the Android One version TO the A1 phone. Even if you UNroot.
I just hope either the developers fix that or Motorola releases a true "factory image" that we can restore that will let us truly go "back to stock" (and begin receiving updates again). If Moto does that, you should be able to apply THAT to you Retail version (turning it into an A1 phone). That's your best hope.

Why not just buy the preferred version, initially?

The retailer one comes out full of annoying bloatwares. Actually I don't care about Fi Project, I just want have the cleanest UI possibile with only the strictly necessary. Oh, there are the security patches and os updates aspects too.

This reminds me of older non-nexus phones- we would have to grab the OTA and use tools to construct the stock rom in a form that was flashable/modifiable. In the pre-lollipop? times, the patches were file based, so it was much easier to modify just specific files. The OTAs are now block based, so they just modify the atomic blocks that need changing, so you need an exact copy of the file system in order to apply the OTA.

Moto X4 Models (NO Bootloader Unlocking)

Motorola X4 Models :
-XT1900-01 USA Carrier Friendly / Project Fi Model
-XT1900-07 Amazon Alexa Model
I spoke to Motorola to find out model numbers and if the 01 Model is Bootloader Unlockable, and unfortunately it is not.
what? then how come is root only tested and working allegedly on xt1900-1? I'm getting so confused haha. I only know mine is xt1900-6.
The bootloader is unlockable on the XT1900-01
I want to get this phone, but I'm afraid of getting the wrong phone for Verizon and getting stuck with a locked bootloader phone.

Yes hope for the best.
From what we've been able to discern from testing is just the opposite of what the CS agent told you. The Amazon version is the one you can't unlock the bootloader (probably because they are afraid you can disable the lock screen ads that way). Nobody's paid Amazon yet to remove them (apparently you can pay the difference between the "with ads" version and the regular retail price if you want Amazon to remove them), so we don't know if that enables bootloader unlock or not.
