It's not light bleed

It's common. Just like every issue, not everyone has it, but quite a few people do. I think that we all agreed on a few things:
1. It isn't actually light bleed by the standard definition. It is light leakage around the bottom of the screen, reflecting off of the metal of the bezel.
2. It has been around since curved screens have been around.
3. It does not affect water resistance.
4. It isn't being caused by the screen lifting. It appears to be happening because the black around the base of the screen isn't flush with the bottom. Samsung is aware of it and they don't consider it a defect. It's more of a tolerance issue.
5. Getting the screen replaced isn't a guarantee of a fix. We had at least one person on the above listed thread that had the screen replaced and ended up with the exact same issue.
6. Getting a replacement device is not a guarantee of this being fixed and instead, you might get a device with this issue and some other issue.
7. Most cases will hide the issue.
My wife and I both have Note 8s and both of them have it. I just put the phones in cases and forgot about it. Given the number of things that can go wrong with one of these things, there's just no way that I was going to try swapping it when it is likely that I would end up with another device with the same issue and/or something worse.
Because of the nature of what may appear to be a light bleed, logic dictate to me that an exchange, or screen replacement will not keep light from reflecting off the edges!

If the black around the inside edges of the screen goes to the very bottom of the screen all the way around, then you will not have the light leakage. The reflection happens when the black doesn't go all the way to the bottom and light reflects off of the metal. This is why some people don't have it. In those cases, there is no light leaking out the bottom of the screen that can reflect.

Honestly, unless you getting "leakage" like this, there's no good reason to try and play the lottery. I sent it in to Samsung to get repaired. There's very little "leakage" with the new LCD panel and glass, but there's still a tiny bit, not super noticeable like before.
This is what I saw when looking directly at the screen. Yeah, it was pretty bad. You could see it during the day/lit room.

Look along the bottom edges of the screen. The actual image area does not go all the way to the edge of the bezel. All around, that portion of the screen is blacked out. If the black does not go right to the very edge of the screen, there's a very small area where light can escape and reflect on the bezel.

I'm asking what exactly is the "black" that you're speaking of? Are you speaking of the material that makes up part of the actual display? Is it the black paint on the side frame? What exactly is the "black"? Or is the "black" referring to the area where light is not reflecting?
None issue. I'd be more concerned about screen uniformity if I were a fusspot.[emoji9]

The black that I'm referring to is along the edge of the screen. It is the material that makes up the display, along the bottom edges. I don't know if it's paint or some other material.

I remember seeing it here somewhere as well. Someone even pasted in a conversation that they had with Samsung. In the conversation, Samsung basically said that it was normal, which to them means it is within tolerance. There is a much bigger thread somewhere in here about "light bleed".
I also saw it somewhere else on the internet, but can't remember where. I stopped thinking about this issue about three days after I got my phone.
I've found a pretty simply solution to this issue. Get yourself some of the glue that's included in the Dome Glass screen protectors. I know they sell similar stuff on amazon, it's UV glue or something, I'd make sure ppl talk about using it to glue on smartphone screens. Since the stuff has a really low surface tension, it sucks itself into any tiny crevices, which include the tiny concave space between the frame and the screen. This stuff blocks the light from leaking, and it's just more glue, which they used to glue the screen on in the first place.
You can use the UV light on it to cure it, or just leave it. since it's such a small amount exposed to the air it it will dry on it's own. The thing I used to hold the glue was super stuck to something the next day and I didn't use the UV light on that, so the stuff does air dry.
I noticed this when I put on my dome glass screen protector and the part where the glue spilled over had no light leaking anymore.

Hey guys, I got my Nexus One earlier this week, and I love it so far, but I have some issues with my screen.
There seems to be a checkerboard kind of print on it. I can't really explain it any better than that. At first I thought it was maybe residue from the plastic wrapping it came in, but after a week and some thorough cleaning, it's still there.
It appears to be finger grease, which indicates that there's a problem with the glass. After cleaning it with a microfiber cloth, the pattern is gone (or at least extremely hard to see), but after some use, it becomes clearly visible again. To me, this says there's extremely small deviations in the glass, which finger grease gets stuck in where it isn't removed by a quick wipe down. To further support this theory, the screen seems more rough swiping top to bottom, than bottom to top, which would make sense given the pattern.
Edit: After thoroughly cleaning the screen, the breathing on it (like a window), my breath makes the pattern clearly visible. Though, this doesn't really confirm anything.
Has anyone else had or seen this issue? Any recommendations on fixing it, or should I be calling up HTC?
I'll try to take a picture when I get home from work, but I doubt it'll be visible. My only other camera is an iPhone.
I think what you see is the digitizer. It is barely visible but you can see it on every touchscreen phone

Not to be one of those guys, but I never saw the digitizer on my iPhones, until I got my Nexus One. Had a moment of uh, my phone's screen is really going to be like that? until I realized what it was, and now I only notice it at an angle in bright light.
You are right, with you can see it I meant just in theory.
I saw it the first time on an n1 too, but only once or twice, but never saw it again since it is so barely visible

Yeah, I definitely knew what you meant. Just wanted to throw that out there.
It kind of sounds like your phone is suffering some form of Newton rings. In the phone world its when the front screen presses on the digitizer and creates light refraction, thus looking like oil swirls. My HTC fuze suffered this horribly and it gets worse over time as far as touch sensitivity goes. I would recommend calling HTC. My nexus doesn't have this issue at all.
I am wondering now if the shipping nexus ones have the LCD screens instead of amoled because of the shortage in amoled screens though.

I don't believe I'm seeing the digitizer. This is on the glass, not the display itself. It's visible on the bezel around the screen as well. I'll try to take a picture when I get home from work.
Edit: to be clear, it covers the entire front glass, over the display and the bezel, and is clearly visible even with the display on.
Strange issue. Never saw this when I purchased mine, though that's probably because I was excited to turn it on rather than inspect the body.
I think it probably has to with the adhesive material between the digitizer and the display not completely curing. When it does cure you don't see it very well but when you use the phone and it heats up the pattern comes back. At least that's my theory.

These are pretty accurate, in terms of what daily usage is like. The full screen one might be a bit much, I had to hand print it up to get it to show in the picture, but the one with with the display on is pretty much what using it (indoors) is like.
I've seen that sometimes on my phone, but it's not nearly as often as it seems to be with yours. Not sure what that is then.
I had a problem with my screen that can only be described as similar. One of the replacement Nexus Ones I received had an incomplete oleophobic coating where the entire bottom 1/4th of the screen would be very clear and the top would get cloudy after light use. There were also a few circles just like the bottom of the phone on the upper portion as well.
I called HTC and they just replaced it for me. Sounds like you should do the same.
Whoa, those look like the glass was machined improperly or that the adhesive issue I hypothesized about earlier could be the culprit.

Same here, they're extremely nice.
I wanted to get a replacement battery since mine has short battery life and constantly overheats, so they forwarded me to HTC but unfortunately for some reason they didn't have my IMEI or S/N on their records, so I couldn't do anything.
I've used the official quick circle case for about 9 months. I'm just now noticing a faint circle burned in to the screen. There is a barely visible thin bordered circle in the same spot where the white circle animation plays. Lame!
Either that or the inner plastic circle piece physically wore out the screen. Either way, there is a dim circle visible now.
Warranty?
My screen was burn and i never use that case.

Weird. So, there is some sort of burn in that can happen with this screen? Even though it isn't AMOLED
I find few g4's in my country (croatia) that have same problem.
Besides this burn-in possibility, do any of you have problems with dust gathering between the screen and the quickcircle flap? It feels like something is giving off static and collecting dust from pockets. I carry my phone around in either jeans pocket or jacket pocket - different materials, and no, the pockets are not full of cookie crumbles or sand. The phone might be in the pocket for as little as few minutes, and when I take it out, you can see a clear coat of dust under the covers circle edges and at the top of the phone. No such problem without the cover.
Also, the plastic back of the cover is already pretty scratched, after about 2-3 weeks of use. Being the silver version, it really shows under light.
Quite bad for a 30 euro case, will probably revert to leather back. Would love to protect the screen though, but dont like any additional bulk.

Damn, I'm using the same (knockoff) one, but haven't noticed any problems. My phone had the hardware failure and Sprint just replaced it so I'm basically on a new one but it had the same serial #, same batch, so I wont' be surprised if it has more problems.
Yeah, I got the dust circle all the time with the case. I actually looked closer at the surface of the screen and it isnt screen burn-in that I am seeing. The official LG circle case has worn away part of the screen in certain places. I think it is the hard clear plastic circle piece that they added around the inside of the circle. Lame!
It is barely visible, but just knowing that the screen is somewhat damaged from their official case bothers me. I wonder if it could be covered under warranty.

It isn't bad at all when the brightness is lowered, but looks absolutely disgusting when using the phone for GPS at night.
Last thing I want is for a $1500 phone to look cheap.
Apparently this is "natural" because of the glass and how it reflects light, BUT... all they had to do was wrap the black around it to block that reflective exit alone the edges.. But they didnt.
I may just take my note 8 back over this. I couldn't stand this on my note 7
OP, you should max the brightness, show a white image, and put a credit card on top of the screen and then take a picture.

You probably aren't noticing it because it takes a relatively bright image closer to the edge for it to appear.
View a white image with maxed brightness while covering the majority of the screen, and you will literally see a white ring around the edge of the phone.
Super damn annoying -_-

After reading this post, I immediately took it out of the case, cranked the brightness up, turned the lights off, opened a web page, seen it! Aghhhh! On mine, it seems worst on the right side. Put it back in the case, took a shot, and now trying to forget it was ever there or my eyes will look for it every time, because it IS ANNOYING now that I KNOW it's there!

If it makes you feel better, its only noticeable when the brightness is at a decent level. Plus using a case will get rid of it entirely.
I'll probably whip out the microscope and apply a fine line of black paint along the edge of the glass lol.
I wonder when they're going to get rid of light bleed. I've literally had it on every device with a screen that I've ever owned.
I thought that OLED devices weren't backlit. Blah blah blah individual pixels lit. Isn't that supposed to be a selling point of OLED screens? Where does the light bleed come from?

It happens because the glass is still thick enough to allow light to travel along the inside and exit throughout the edges.
This is such an easy fix too, which is why I don't understand why this hasn't been fixed. All they have to do is literally wrap the glass around the edges with the same material they're using the the top and sides anyway..

Ahh, ok. Makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. It's different than the standard LCD light bleed then.
Hopefully I won't notice it much while it's in a case.

A blast from the past. Identical thread in the Note 7 and nearly all other forums concerning the 'edge screen design'.
It is not technically "Light bleed" That term is reserved for a phenomena (problem-fault) often common with IPS panels.
What you are seeing is......how can one write.......light escaping NOT into the screen as light bleed but light escaping from the screen.....There is a gap between the body and where the display ends, this tiny tiny tiny space, in certain situations, can indeed shine light OUT but not into the screen and there is a difference but both can be annoying IF we become OCD about it. I guess this situation is part of the edge experience? As suggested by peers, a case will stop such micro reflections or light escaping.

So this is a known issue with Galaxy phones?
I've never experienced it with the Note 7 or currently with the Galaxy S8 plus. Is this enough to get a replacement?
Wow, this thread is like dejavu, I had to really look for it with max brightness in a dark room to find it on both my note 7's. I didn't think it was a big deal but some did. If I get the note 8 I will look for it.

It sounds like you might have to go through more than one replacement to get one that doesn't do it.
Just for fun, I always follow the release of the new iPhone on Macrumors each year, and there's always a huge light bleed thread. I know (now) that this is something completely different than what happens with these phones.. People over there go through numerous replacements to try and get a perfect screen. Many never get one.
I will have my phone in a case from day one, so I guess that I won't see this.
Mine's good... no light bleed at all.

I'm not seeing any either even with the brightness turned all the way up and various bright pictures. There's a slight change in brightness but that's to be expected with the curve but nothing like the pictures.

at least one guy on another forum has reported his light bleed and is getting a replacement in exchange.
So maybe some were built with more of a "gap" there than others.
The way my luck with electronic devices works, I'll definitely have it. Glad that it won't be noticeable when it's in a case. I won't even look for it, because then I'll know it's there for sure and it will bug me.
Is anyone else's xz1 compact body bent or not straight?
I have had mind a couple of weeks and been super careful with it, so I don't think I bent it or something. I didn't notice until today when I set my phone down on a flat table as I was finicking with it when I noticed it rocked back and forth and wasn't perfectly flat to the table. It is particularly noticeable in the front side (I think part of this is due to the edges around the screen not being completely flush or evenly flat. The back does it much less, but I think that may because of the curved back on the back. After looking down the back side of the phone I realized it was clearly not straight and could see It curve.

The top and bottom edges of the phone are protruding to protect the screen from being scratched when placed face down.
Though it does not rock for me.

Mine doesn't rock when on its back, and I have a screen protector on the front which is slightly taller than the top and bottom metal caps, so it is also stable.
When I bought my phone in store, per procedure they had me inspect the phone for obvious damage or defects.
The first unit I got unfortunately had assembly issues with the top and bottom metal caps, there was a noticeable gap on both ends and they protruded unevenly. One end protruded to the front, and the other to the back.
At first they tried to play it off as non-issue, citing manufacturing tolerance, and refused to let me exchange a new one, but I insisted and eventually they agreed to give me another unit, which is the one I'm currently using.
Does your unit have similar unevenness with the metal caps? Maybe that's the cause of the instability. I do not perceive any curves on the body of my phone.

I didn't think about the camera, good point, that may be some of the issue when it's on its back. The rocking when it's on its back is mild, so it may be the camera lens ring. However, I can look down the phone close with my naked eye and notice the bend pretty easily.
I do realize the front 'metal caps' protrude a little to protect the screen, but as mhaha says below, those edges are not necessarily uneven. The top metal cap sticks out further, in general, than the bottom. Individually, if I run my finger down the cap edges on the face of the phone I think I can feel where they get closer/further from the screen in places (it is very slight, so maybe that one is more in my head). I also didn't notice the uneven gap edge until you said that, I can't really physically feel that one so I think it's a little less of an issue. But, yes, on the left side of my screen it's super snug up against the side bezel and on the right I can see a very slight gap, in comparison.
My phone rocks bad on its face/front , diagonally from the cameras corner to the corner opposite.
I have actually requested my return (I ordered mine online) and will very likely be sending it back. I am not sure ill get a replacement either, for now just the return.

Yeah, my top metal cap isn't as in line as the bottom, now that I see that. Thanks very much! That would definitely contribute to a wobble on a flat surface.
But, there are still all the other issues I've noted, so I'm quite confident it's a number of issues contributing to it all.

Yeah, my top metal cap isn't as in line as the bottom, now that I see that. Thanks very much! That would definitely contribute to a wobble on a flat surface.
But, there are still all the other issues I've noted, so I'm quite confident it's a number of issues contributing to it all.

The photo isn't quite a good descriptor of the problem though.
The photo suggests that it's just the way the metal end-caps are installed is what's causing the rocking.
If you run the link through a translator, the author states that the metal caps are misaligned because the plastic/glass-fiber body itself is warped.
So you may want to look at getting the phone replaced.
I dropped my phone on the road 2nd day of use. The metal edge got scratched, but the phone survived. The only other issue I noticed was twisted body. Looking from the edge, the twisted edge was easy to notice, and surface wobble was also there. I held the edges of the phone and put some pressure in opposite direction (trying to twist it back), and now my phone seems straight/aligned).
Please don't try this at home and come complain to me if something goes wrong. Since I dropped my phone, I couldn't just return it and get it replaced. Also not sure if the drop twisted it, or just pressure in my jeans pocket. Also not sure if the twist will come back. For now, the phone is fine.
I just bought XZ1 (not XZ1C) in UK, and having similar issue.
I'm not sure if the "cap" in misplaced or the whole body is twisted, but when I put the device face down, it rocks

Thanks for the further insight, I'm grateful! I will be returning the phone. I'm undecided on whether or not I would like to purchase another after. I kinda wanted to see how the future quality/reviews are more. Based on some with similar issues, I'm not sure ill be getting another, but I'll see I guess. Thanks again!

Thanks very much for your input! I appreciate it. The body twist and warp (these are better way to describe it, thanks, as the phone isn't so much curved/bent as it, or the single piece back/body specifically, is warped) is quite noticeable with the one I have too (looking at the edge like you said). However, I don't think I've dropped the phone (too hard at least and no visible scrathes, scrapes, etc.) I also keep a phone in a coat pocket, bag, or just take it out and set it down when I'm not out and about, so I don't think I would have caused the warp myself. Thanks again!
Before I installed UV screen protector I noticed this stripe under UV lamp. Is that normal?
I saw that too, when installing the Whitestone Dome, and have not noticed any problems.
I noticed the same thing when installing my whitestone... assuming it's normal, my display is good under normal circumstances as far as I can tell

it's basically the same shape that shown on my screen whenever the screen display dark color contrasts (but not true blacks)...that seems to resemble a burn-in.
Hi everyone, I don't think this is anything to worry about. I found the same blob on my Huawei Mate 20 Pro whilst I was trying to cure my green screen.
I then checked my partners s9 and it also had the same blob so it's definitely not screen burn.
I was told it's the loca glue used in the manufacturing process. Same thing on the Pixel 3 XL's and Note 8's. I wouldn't worry about it.

Theres almost no way it's a burn in. I have this on my brand new unit that i noticed on the 1st day of use before installing my Whitestone. At this point the screen and only been on for about 20 mins. I know this because my phone as of now only has 31 charging cycles on it.

Yup normal. However I seen a user on here who had it discolor and could be seen under normal use.
Been looking into it why I'm at work. It is an optical adhesive and perfectly normal. However from what I'm guessing Samsung let a few out with bad adhesive and that's what causesd his what he thought was burn in.
But normal to see it under uv under certain wave length's. If you see it without UV light then that is an issue. Or if you have your display on and can see the outline of it.
Same Norland adhesive we use at my work on some of our optical stuff.
Just a heads up. The light they give you with the dome is not the right wavelength for the adhesive they use. Final cure you will wanna do 2 min total for each top and bottom. If not the adhesive will still be green "not fully cured" the adhesive they use is on the cheeper end of the spectrum but fine for what it is being used for. That much adhesive in a top of the line product would be around $30. But I used it on my. Did a final cure of 2 min top and bottom. Checked it out under a high power microscope and it was fully cured. No issues with it lifting.

So you've been meaning to say that if we see this without UV light (which I see in my device when I'm in a dim room and I let my phone show dark grey to dark green colors), then it's not normal? Then if it's Samsung fault, would they fix it in a repair center (hopefully free of charge)?
Im just quite pissed off for this since I came from S9+ and I havent had any issues with the screen. Couldn't they be at least consistent with things like this given the fact the display is one of the most selling point of this phone?
p.s. and oh, just to add, what's appearing on mine is not just some rectangular flat discoloration on my screen, it has dark polkadots lined in a grid inside just like many others have been complaining about.

note 8 had that too.
I saw the same when installing my dome glass. No issues with the display.
My 3 month old Note 9
Can see green polka dot kind of burn in during normal use. Phone is only 3 months old. I take care of my phone religiously. Just noticed a few days ago and now it's all I see.
