Guys I just bought a used Kindle Fire HD 7" (not sure it it's the current version or the original KF HD as it has 32GB of storage space on it) that has some major issues.
It alternates between either not showing anything on the screen with the only indications that it is turned on being that it makes a noise when I disconnect it from the computer I have it connected to, and the kindle fire hard drive disappears, and intermittantly it displays a little over half of the screen, with a distinct grey overcast, with a 1 inch or so band of solid grey and the remainder of the screen displaying as black.
When I rotate the screen the messed up portion doesn't rotate with the screen. And putting it into fastboot mode with a factory cable shows the same behavior with the screen either not displaying at all or only displaying half of the fastboot screen.
Is this a screen issue or a defective motherboard?
I would like to fix it and use it but want to make sure I get the right parts before I try.

Well you can try a full factory restore but you may be looking at a hardware issue.
Sent from my Nexus 7 Flo running Odex SinLess ROM 4.4.2 with ElementalX kernel using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I did use fastboot to recover it back to factory but it didn't fix the issue unfortunately.
I bought a new screen and digitizer assembly (basically the whole front of the kindle fire HD minus only the plastic that is attached to it with glue), that once I get in I will replace the screen on my messed up one.
the replacement screen fixed the issue, sorry I hadn't responded to update the thread.
Okay, so this is a weird one. My little brother has a had his Kindle Fire HD 7" since it came out and just recently the screen has gone completely black. But what's odd is that there is a voice describing what is on the screen, and it seems to still respond to touches. He claims he didn't do anything and that he just woke up to it being like that.
So I really have no idea if there is a way to disable the screen that he accidently enabled, or what. But I'm stuck trying to fix it for him now. My gut says that the screen is shot because even when I power cycle it I get absolutely nothing on the screen. ADB was never enabled on it either, so I have no way of reflashing it, except maybe with something called a factory cable.
Do any of you have any suggestions that I can try to fix this or any easy way to use a factory cable to give it a fresh firmware reflash?
Thank you for the help!
Very odd problem - I am using GPS Joystick:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theappninjas.gpsjoystick
It works fine. However on the Note 5 I cannot lock the joystick. Are you able to lock it on your Note 5?You are supposed to be able to lock the joystick by tapping the center. I can lock the joystick just fine on 3 Nexus devices, so I know it's not something I'm doing wrong. For some strange reason I cannot do it on the Note 5. I followed instructions elsewhere for updating the touchscreen firmware (*#2663#) but this did not fix the problem. I also tried changing the AMOLED display mode. I also tried using the S-pen. I wrote the developer, but they are stumped - there is no reason this should fail. The joystick just won't lock on the Note 5.
I am on rooted stock 7.0 with the app in system mode.
Same device and Android version
I can't lock it either most of the time but if you were somehow able to tap directly in the middle it will lock properly
I had to press it 20 times to lock it with the note's stylus before it worked
I am new to the honor play, so will have to ask for your help. I need to disable the lock screen what I switch off the mobile and then on again , I do want to go directly to home screen. I have tried finding the setting for this but could not, although done before for other phone. Thanks
I imagine, you just need to turn off all security, I have my phone set to be unlocked if my blue tooth is by the phone, which gives security and no lock screen.

I'm still on a Tmobile Note 8 and just got the One UI update today and was so disappointed to find that it doesn't have the 'double tap to wake' feature. I always thought this update would bring this feature. As I walked into a Tmobile store couple weeks ago and confirmed this feature was on a S10 so I thought this update would do it. Anyway, just wanted to know if any of you Note 9 owners who have the One UI update have this feature? if so, that would be awesome, and will get a Note 9 soon; if not, hmmm don't know, will just keep using my Note 8, thanks!!

sorry, I meant 'double tap to wake' screen, not always on display. this already works on my Note 8
Nope, d2tw is only on s10 series (that doesn't have the virtual key feature)

ok thanks for the info! darn. ahhhh!!
Honest question, why would you need that when there's the soft, pressure-sensitive home button? Doesn't it do the same thing, with one less tap?
because when I'm driving, I could easily wake it up by tapping anywhere on the screen. it's not that simple finding the home screen button when you are driving now that there's no hardware button. I know I shouldn't be touching the phone at all but at times there's still a need to. sure, I can unlock it with google and do some things (and bixby I think but haven't try it yet), but it's not the same as google is waiting for me to tell it to do something.

I bet a front facing FP comes in handy when driving and phone is on a mount.

do these usually work by pressing anywhere on the screen, or needs to press in a certain section of the screen?

I see. I personally don't think it's tricky to press on the soft home button while driving (it's not that fussy about where you tap), but I use Android Auto while driving so my screen is always on anyway.
Guys, please don't use your phones while you drive.?

+1
OP, you could try decreasing sensitivity of the button. Feels just like tapping plus having a dedicated area.
I'd your use case is while driving, a recommend turning on 'Skip Lock Screen' and adding your car's Bluetooth to trusted devices. This way, you need only a tap on the button and you can go directly to the home screen surpassing your lock screen and the need to scan fingerprint.
Also, did you know you can double tap any notification to wake screen. Enabling 'Skip Lock Screen' as mentioned above will route you to the app directly when you double tap it.
Hope this helps.

Coming from a OnePlus 3T, I do miss DT2W as well. Sitting in a meeting, in a bus, on a plane or in the car - you never have to "search for the right spot", you can just tap on the (dark) screen in order to wake it up.
I really miss it. Once you get used to it, you´re lost.
Hi. There is Fast Wake (not sure about translation, i have another language) by Double Tap options in Accessiblility menu.

Double Tap on Playstore works perfectly.
No ads, no internet connecting and almost no battery consumption.
Double Tap Off - Apps on Google Play
Double Tap on Home Screen to turn off the screen.Work with fingerprint & MIUI
