Is there a way to apply a PIN/password for shutting down or rebooting an unlocked and rooted NEM-L21. This is because if a thief gets access to TWRP, it will get a lot more power over the phone. I don't want thiefs to access my personal info just by deleting the password file in twrp file manager.

For some reason my pin code to unlock my phone has suddenly become invalid. Anyone know how I can get in without losing all my data? Can't even back up my recent contacts as I can't unlock the phone.

Depends. If you have 20L installed there's a pretty serious security bug you can take advantage of.
It's easy.
o If you have CWM installed, boot into it. If not, NVFlash CWM first.
o Make a backup
o Reboot
o Shut down, boot back into CWM
o Restore backup
The first boot after restoring the backup bypasses the PIN-screen completely.
(I cannot promise this will work for you, but it does for me everytime. There's a chance it uses a stored copy of the pin-code though, which I cannot test since my PIN still works.)
Sorted, thanks for the reply.
Is it possible to use adb?
If yes: Pull /data/system/password.key and remove all characters. Push it back and reboot phone
If no: Can somebody make an update.zip with an empty password.key file?
Edit: i made a zip, just flash in recovery

I have only tried it with Cyanogen and it worked for me
I was at a convention this weekend and when i arrived i had to turn in my phone since they are not allowed. I normally use pin or pattern lock to secure my phone but i decided to try password lock for more security. Well the password that used which i had to confirm before it locked i am typing it over and over exactly the same way i typed it when i turned it on but it is not going through.
I am using Knoxraid V 5.6 JB rom
I am able to access recovery through the power menu
I would like to find a way to unlock my phone without having to resetting my phone and loosing all my data. I use my phone heavily for work and will loose important info that could cost me $$$...
If resetting is the only the way to fix this then i will have to do it but was wondering how exactly i have to go about doing that..
Can i just go back into recovery select wipe 3x and reboot
or do i have to reflash the phone by going into recovery (not sure if i still have safe strap installed) selecting the file and then flashing on stock rom slot..
T.I.A.
EDIT: would any of these options actually work ?
http://en.miui.com/thread-5684-1-1.html
found this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2620456
and i am going to attempt the first option and flash the zip only thing is that in recovery i dont get the option to flash a zip i only get the option to update from ADB
update through zip on external storage and option to reboot
??
So I lasted about 3 days before I had to root my N6. So I did, using Wugs toolkit. After rooting and going through the process, my phone still said it was encrypted and I still had to enter the pattern to turn my phone on.
However, after installing TWRP recovery and manager, my phone says it's still encrypted, but I no longer have to enter my pattern to turn on my phone.
Is this normal? Is my phone still encrypted?
I know most people want to get rid of encryption, but I like having it and need it. Is there a way to make the pattern required to boot up?

its encrypted until you flash a kernel/rom that allows decryption, then actually go through and decrypt it.
Oooh. So was it when I flashed Franco Kernel? How do I bring back the pattern requirement when starting up?
set it up from scratch. main phone settings, security, screen lock.

Rooting or flashing custom recovery doesn't allow you to get rid off force encryption. Just follow this thread to disable the force encryption

Thank you. That fixed it.
My 4-digit password works just fine during normal use. But after upgrading to oxygenOS 5.0.1 (OTA) , I decided I wanted to revert back to nougat. So I load my backup in twrp and reboot, and it asks for my password rather than fingerprint to unlock screen because of reboot. And that's when my password is not recognized.
This is the only password Ive ever used for my phone so its definitely the right one. I can also see notifications and accept calls, it just won't unlock the screen. I also tried the default code for my simcard but even removing it doesnt make a difference.
Next, I restore my backup for 5.0.1. that I made prior to restoring nougat, and the same thing happens, password doesn't work. I had to do a factory reset to get my phone working again.
Still determined to get good old android 7 back, I install the original recovery as to upgrade from the oneplus website. And upon booting to recovery my password is once again not recognized.
I'm now back on twrp and have no problems with my passcode. But I think this is strange so maybe someone here has an idea about what's going on.
If you're restoring a backup, you have to remove gatekeeper.pattern (or password).key and locksettings.db, once removed it will work
I moved those files from data/system to data and it worked. Thank you very much!
I noticed this also removes the lock if you set it from another computer using the 'my devices' section of your google account. But it does not remove the lock notification, to do that you simply have to set a new password from your phone.
And that's how easy it is to "hack" an Android phone. Pretty sure you can do this using adb from the stock recovery. Maybe I will try it one day.

AFAIK stock recovery allows only sideloading via adb

Not sure about Oneplus, but we have a Prestigio tablet here and I managed to delete an entire partition from the stock recovery. Wipe data didn't help a bootloop so I actually wiped it for good.
I hope other manufacturers aren't that foolish, but I'm not sure they know better.
So, basically, i have ****ed up my device. it wouldnt boot after i did a reboot(using the ressurection remix ROM from this forum), so, i have tried to restore a backup and it didnt work(forgot to wipe everything) now, i can boot into TWRP but the screen wont response, i have tried to boot into TWRP via ADB but nothing works, im just stuck on that put password screen, any sugestions?
Did you remove the system password/lockscreen before upgrading?
If not, can you get in to twrp file manager?
As far as I can see with my limited knowledge you may need to remove the password lock in twrp file manager.
If that is it, you'll need to do some searching.
As long as the phone does something, there is still hope

So, ive no acess to TWRP at all, cant reinstall it and cant acess anything on it because the screen wont work(the problem is NOT with the display itself), i cant even do that slide thing to unlock the screen when it turns off.
I did some research and i couldnt find any way to delete that password without root acess(looks like ive lost it during the **** ive done), so to try this you have told me, i have to root my cellphone totally from ADB, without doing anything on recovery, any ideas?
Update1: remembered the simple pull comand and were able only to pull locksettings.db, twrp still asks for the password.
Update2: ive managed to install the stock recovery and then flash TWRP again, now its working. THX for all!
