I think trash is probably a bit harsh..... but anyway i was asking so i DONT loose the root
I did reset to factory defaults and did not loose root. Some people on this forum say that you will. I asked exactly the same question before resetting and was told root will be gone. I had to reset so i had no other choice however tablet was still rooted. Google play store was untouched too. Maybe i was just lucky.

So far have done a factory reset via the software option choice twice with root on the HD and have not lost it both times. If you do lose root as you have just Factory reset should not take that much time to put it back on the HD.
Superuser and the 'su' binary reside on the system partition.
On the original KFs, the stock 'factory reset' wipes the data and media (sdcard) partitions. On 2nd devices, there is no media partition, only one large data partition is used for both, so that gets wiped.
Wiping the system partition would leave you without an OS to boot to and with no way to restore it, so it is left alone, thus you keep your "root".

Erm,,, sorry. Please excuse my mild retardation...
Does that mean if i do, do a factory reset my root/gplay/SU files will still be there? (that that i took from what you said but wanted/needed to be sure!)

Superuser and SU are untouched. Gplay, I'm not sure about...it depends on where everything is installed. I say that because on my 1st gen, where GApps were installed via recovery, the "com.android.vending.apk" is under '/data/app' rather than '/system/app' (not entirely sure why). The GApps.zip package itself doesn't contain a vending.apk so I'm guessing(?) that it's installed after the fact...but to be honest with you, I have no idea.
You should take a look in your '/data/app' folder to make sure there are no Gplay dependent or other necessary packages and make a backup of your data partition just in case.

thanks for your help mate..

JaffAWooD,
Absolutely. When you perform a Factory Reset, everything in /system/xbin is reset to factory defaults.
The su binary is stored in /system/xbin.
You will have the false appearance of being rooted since the /system/app is kept intact, this is where
you will find Superuser.apk. Although, sometimes Factory Resets are needed to solve major issues
and re-rooting is not difficult:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069117
I lost root after factory reset. But it was easier to root the second time. Be sure to be careful with what files you do/did change. I messed up some factory files because of tinkering before reset..

Hi,
Thank you for your reply. I have the feeling i have opened a can of worms here - i understood the (basic) defination of 'root' was the ability to get into the system/app folder to load apps/games/loaders etc, etc.. Is this not the case? because after the reset i can still do this using ES File Explorer..?
My brain is beginning to ache! lol I appriciate all the help though...

JaffAWooD,
No worries, we are here to help you. Ask as many times as needed until you obtain the answer you need. This
forum was not designed for all experts! To Root the Kindle - the term 'Root' is to give the user 'Superpowers'
which allows you to change the Kindles appearance, install Google Play Store, change the Graphical interface,
etc. When you have Superpowers or specifically Superuser Powers, you will be able to move or remove
programs in the /system/app folder. Now these Powers need to be used with cation since they can also damage
the Kindle if you remove the wrong program that is dependent on the Kindles primary operation. You can install
most programs and games without Root. It is the more advanced programs that may require 'Root Permissions'
to run. Read the description in Google Play Store, it will specifically say 'requires root to function'. Most
Launchers like Go Launcher do not need Root access to function properly. Google Play Store on the other
hand requires Root to install and function properly although most of the Google Applications can be
installed without root. One of the ones that does require root is Gmail since it is dependent on the
Sync Services which is installed directly into the /system/app folder. You will be able to use ES File
Explorer after the Factory Reset, although you will not be able to move or remove anything in
/system/app - does this help a little?
I have 2 issues that are really starting to tick me off. At first they were just an annoyance, but now... GRRR!!!
1st issue:
Randomly, my D3 will just reboot, and it goes to ROM Manager's Recovery and stays there until I do something. So if this happens at say 3AM, I don't have an alarm clock any more as I get a list to Reboot, Backup/Restore, Update from ZIP, etc.
2nd issue:
Everytime the phone reboots, the same 32 apps are uninstalled. No, not just missing the icon, COMPLETELY uninstalled as reloading the Homescreen DOES NOT load the applications, they are still uninstalled. It also refreezes an app I have to keep unfreezing. Some of the apps are installed to the phone, some are moved off the phone to the media area, some contain no extra data/download.
Things I've tried:
1. Mounting system as RW, reinstalling them all, and rebooting, no luck.
2. Mount system partition, used Permissions Pro to reset all permissions (I don't like some games having to load at boot, I think it's stupid, so I denied them that) and performed step 1 again, no luck.
3. Used ROM Toolbox Pro to fix permissions, and performed step 1 again, no luck.
4. Moved the apps that were in the media area back to the phone, back to the media area, and back to the phone, no luck.
5. Reinstalling and unfreezing and rebooting without doing anything special, no luck.
6. Yelling and screaming at it, as well as threaten it's life, no luck.
7. Begged it to behave, no luck.
Droid 3, Rooted, ROM Manager (with ClockworkMod Recovery), Titanium Backup, a few of the VZW bloatware removed.
I'm willing to do a factory reset, but will I have to re-root? I don't mind losing ClockworkMod Recovery if needed, as I want to safestrap it anyways. I have searched many forums over and over, includling those not for Droid 3 devices, but they all have to do with the app appearing uninstalled, not actually being removed off the phone.
Thanks greatly.
I'm pretty sure you should NOT use rom manager on you d3 to flash anything. Sounds like it might be time to sbf back to stock, reroot and start fresh with safestrap.

Stock ROM.
if you made changes to settings, removed apks, device is not completely stock anymore
you should restore any stock apps you removed, best way to remove unwanted apps is to freeze with titanium backup pro, and unfreeze if needed
if you can not restore all stock app, made changes to settings, or still doesn't work
flash .xml recovery image, just use correct one, for your device and system version
menu/ system settings/about phone/ system version
if 5.6.890.XT862 use .5.6.890.XT862.xml and rsd lite

correct, just install minimoto, or XT861 5.8.25 Stock ROM. Android 2.3.6

Thanks! I am on .906, so I'm downloading that huge 450 MB 1click file, but I have a few questions..
1. Do I have to re-root?
2. Is this going to put me back to .890?
3. I can follow the directions here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1872206) to install and use safe strap (the 4th link) even if I don't plan to dual boot?
4. What's the difference between bootstrapper and SafeStrap, or are they the same?
Thanks very much for you help thus far.

Once you have successfully sbf'd you will have to reinstall the .906 ota. you can accomplish this one of 2 ways
1. Go to settings/about phone/system updates and follow the steps
2. Download the update from this thread push it to your EXTERNAL sdcard boot your phone into STOCK recovery pwr+x choose install update

they are similar, with safestap you leave stock rom, custom roms are install differently so you can switch back and forth between reboots
---------- Post added at 02:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:22 PM ----------
also ovelayer doesn't cover, wiping data
if phone bootloops, after flashing sbf, try wiping cache in android recovery
Android system recovery <3a>
with device off
hold X & power, when you see triangle, !, & Andy, press both volume buttons
if phone still bootloops go back to android recovery, and wipe data
or save sometime, and wipe data before flashing sbf
So, I did the whole 1-click-sbf thing, activated the phone, didn't install anything yet, but I did update all the system apps (GMail app, Play Store, etc) and everything was good. I also restored my text messages and call history.
I rooted the phone just fine as well.
Then I started to download and install some apps by using the market not my Titanium Backups.
Moved the ones to the Media Area that didn't automatically move.
Rebooted again, and some apps are uninstalled again, but this time, all of them are ones that were moved to SD card, but not all SD moved apps got uninstalled.
So, what I decided to do, is reinstall the missing apps and keep them on the phone to see what happens. The ones that were uninstalling are now staying installed, however, now some that never uninstalled (that are on the SD) are uninstalling themselves. GRR!
So, the last thing I tried is to now reinstall the uninstalled apps, move them back to the phone, and reboot to see what happens now... I finally got around to finishing up this and after this last reboot, NEW applications that never got uninstalled are now uninstalled.
Time for new phone perhaps?

Since the topic of this thread isn't about TiBu, let's go back to the original topic....
I got tired of the issue and random apps unintalling, so I removed my external MicroSD, did a factory reset (which didn't un-root, therefore, I didn't have to re-root), formatted the internal SD (Media Area) and went through the setup again, I didn't have to activate again though. I updated all system apps, rebooted. All OK. Installed a few apps, reboot, OK. Moved what I could to the SD, and reboot, all OK. Installed about 20 other apps and reboot, all still OK. Moved what I could to SD, and reboot. 1 app uninstalled itself. Completely removed from applications and reboot. All ok, no further apps uninstalled. Installed about 20 more apps, reboot and all is ok, moved over what I could to media area (internal SD) and reboot. 2 apps were uninstalled, both moved to media area and neither one part of the original 32. Uninstalled both from the applications setting and rebooted. 4 more apps uninstalled, none part of the original 32.
I'm at a loss here...
Does TEC from VZW cover this type of issue? I can un-root the phone and they'd be none the wiser.

Moving apps to the "media area" is a kludge at best and I avoid it. Every once in a while I check settings->applications to see if any apps snuck their way there, and I move all of them back to internal.
So I wiped the phone again, repeated the whole 1-click file thingy as last time, seems to be going rather smooth this time around. While poking around, I noticed a built-in (and probably bloatware) application not installed. I tried to google it to see what it does, but nothing is really all that clear. The package is called 'com.verizon.permissions.appdirectedsms' and I found it missing through TiBu. However, SMS works just fine.
Anyone able to advise what the package does, or did? I haven't updated to 906 yet, so perhaps it's something new with that and that's why it's missing? Guess I should update first shouldn't I? Ok, I will. I'll update when it's done.
Many, many thanks to all of you!
what do you mean not installed, if its in the system apps folder its installed
not all system apks show up in apps drawer

App source: https://www.cerberusapp.com/
This app is mainly to protect our phone and helps to locate our device in case of lost or stolen.
Obviously, needless to mention that the device needs to be magisk rooted. Rooted with latest magisk version is good.
Why this module?
See screenshot for reference. Why we need this magisk module? Cerberus app needs to be placed in system/priv-app in order to use the "SIM checker" settings to work. This settings is very handy to include mobile numbers to be notified in case of device loss/stolen. Also, we can confugure under this settings to localize the device with a "cerberus find" sms message without a password. This means that we can find the finder location / device location in no time in case we lost it.
By the way, you have to create account in https://www.cerberusapp.com to use this app.
This module installs the app in system/priv-app folder. Flash this module in Magisk Manager and reboot device. After device boot you will see this app in app drawer in the name of "System Framework". I have used Cerberus Disguised apk and this is why the name of the app is not obvious (i.e "System framework"). If anyone needs magisk module for the named app, i.e Cerberus, please place request in yourt post. The named app will apprear in app drawer in the name of Cerberus with the developers app icon.
Without this module, we still can manually move the app folder from data partition (after we install normally) in to system/priv-app folder and set permissions to 755. But on several occations error message pops-up on each device boot.
If the developer of this app has any objections to this work, please PM me.
Usual disclaimer: I am not responsible if you break your device. You are using at your own will.
Module file attached and also it can be downloaded from this LINK.
I tested it on an old device. An LG G2 with cyanogenmod. Android Marshmallow.
First I uninstalled Cerberus completely. I rebooted the device and checked to see if there were any file remnants in Data / App. There was nothing else there.
Then I installed the Magisk module and restarted the device.
Upon restarting Cerberus was properly installed. I launched Cerberus and set it up properly.
Then I went to the System / Priv-app folder to check.
There I found the System Framework folder. Inside was only the SystemFramework.apk file, but there was no other folder like I had seen in Data / App.
Then I rebooted the device to TWRP and did the factory reset. I did on the following:
Wipe Data
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik / Art Cache
Then I restarted the device.
Upon restart there was no remnant of Cerberus (System Framwork). Cerberus has been UNINSTALLED.
I accessed (via computer) the Cerberus website and tried to track, but to no avail. Not tracked.
I wonder if I made a mistake in the procedure?
I am thinking to test in my Xiaomi Mi A3.
@FredMontteiro That is expected. Magisk stores it's files in /data/adb, so any app that is moved to /system through Magisk will be removed if /data is wiped.

So the Magisk module doesn't really install the app in /system then. Right? It only makes it look like it. So a factory reset makes it dissappear...

Yes. That's always been the main function of Magisk, making system modifications without actually touching /system.
Call me crazy, but... isnt this the sole purpose of cerberus? to be installed as a system file, survive factory reset and be found in case a person loses a phone or gets it stolen/pickpocketed? I mean... is there a way in 2020 that cerberus not only survive a factory reset, but actually works after it, meaning: the phone that gets factory reseted keeps its roots functions and stealthly sends info to the cerberus website etc?

Yes, but it doesn't work like this on a Magisk rooted phone.
I see. In 2020, is it possible to have a root that isn't systemless and a phone/apps that won't lose a lot of functions? Or if they do, workarounds that are effective? Honest question.

It has nothing to do with Magisk being systemless root (so was SuperSU). On most devices you can still edit /system, but most modern devices are now SAR devices (system-as-root), so in order to edit the system partition you actually have to edit the root directory (/). It's up to the app developers to make that work.
But, Google has twisted it a bit further with Android 10 and there are now devices that have completely read-only system partitions that are impossible to write to. You can still do systemless modifications with Magisk, but features like Cerberus' factory reset protection won't work.
What I've written here is quite simplified, so if anyone is interested to know more I urge you to do your own research. There's tons of stuff written about this already...
I posted a thread that allows the Cerberus app to survive a factory reset. (Even if your device is rooted with Magisk).
