Sudden White Screen - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. I was just using my Fire tablet normally. I opened up the YouTube app and I clicked on the subscription section then my Fire screen turned white all of a sudden. I forced shutdown, let it sit, removed the SD card and tried to charge it and it still is just a white screen. I connected the Fire to my computer (Kubuntu 16.04 LTS) and it would show up but I couldn't pull my files off of it. ADB doesn't work either. My device was never opened, I have not rooted it or installed a ROM onto it, I installed Google Play on it, I disabled OTA updates, and I installed Nova Launcher with widgets. So what went wrong here? Thanks.

Sounds like a hardware fault. Contact Amazon for an exchange if within the warranty period for your region.

Unlikely unless skilled in electronics diagnostics. Sourcing a replacement part would be the next challenge assuming you could identify the culprit. Most just purchase a used device with a cracked screen from eBay and start swapping components. Alternatively, look for a replacement at Amazon Warehouse. You can often find refurbs for about 60% the cost of a new one.

Thanks for your help, do you think there is any way for me to access my data? I mean its okay if I an't because most of my stuff is in the cloud, but it would be nice anyway. Thanks.

Quick update, my Fire tablet can make sound and can respond to touches and I get notifications. So I'm wondering if the screen is dead?

Possible the LCD cable has become partially dislodged. It so it's a fairly easy fix. See link below for teardown instructions. You want to check the LCD (vs. digitizer) cable. Once accessible gently push against the back side to insure it is fully engaged with the main board.

So I went and opens up my device and couldn't fix it. I'm just going to use my Fire for a scrap part for another Fire tablet. Thanks for helping me.:good:

Whats wrong with my HD 7, is this normal?

Ohhkay, here is my issue. If my phone
1. Dies, when i put it on the charger weather it be the wall or the computer, and then turn it on it wont turn on completely. It shows a picture telling me to connect my phone to a computer.
or
2. If i turn my phone off manually by the lock screen button and then try to turn it on it does the same thing as if the phone died.
The fix is to pull the battery once its on, and then turn it on. Is this a common issue and just a part of one of the many bugs with this new OS? Thanks!
No problem here... better take it back and let em check it

What do you mean by take a look at it, what can a bunch of t-mobile reps do? (referencing the reps at the t-mobiles near me because they don't seem to know much about ANYTHING.)

I wouldn't consider your issue a bug at this point. You might want to take it to the store and have it swapped. If it happens on your replacement then its a bug; if someone else mentions it then its a bug.
Again, start with step one, take the phone back and have it swapped.
How long/complicated/tiresome/time consuming is backing up my ENTIRE phone to my computer, and then reloading EVERYTHING back to the replacement?

I'm not sure what you mean by backup as WP7 doesn't have any backup abilities. Are you referring to your music via Zune. All the apps you download are via marketplace which is in the cloud. likewise your e-mail which is also in the cloud.
You've got 25GB of skydrive for your documents that are also cloud based hence no backup. Again you may want to give more details by backup/restore.

It isn't complicated. It's actually very simple. Sign into Live.com and that will sync most of your info. Connect to Zune and the rest will be loaded.
I had to do it 4 times. I'm on my fourth HD7. Stuff like placing tiles and the arrangement of you main page is manual, though.

Tiles and settings is what it comes down to? Ok well even with this issue I don't really care if its there. My phone only died once, when I first got it, and there was only one case where I had to turn the phone off because of an app. As long as its not confirmed by Microsoft that it is a hardware issue, I could care less, it will get fixed if it is software related. So this thread made me come to this conclusion. "If its not a hardware issue confirmed by Microsoft then I dont care"

I just remembered, you also need to manually install the apps you got from the Market. They don't install automatically yet...later in an update, hopefully.

Yes, I agree; having all your downloaded apps (on your phone) sync to ur computer visa versa (computer to phone) would be great. To take it one step further have them sync'ed to your live account! That would be cool. To just input your windows live id on ur new wp7 device and everything but the placement of your tiles and settings would be there. Ahhh, we can only dream, lol. (or hope)
and here is a picture of my screen when i plug in my phone after i get the "connect your wp7 device to a computer" screen.

Actually I was more referring to the way Android 2.2 does it. Sign in to Gmail or the Market and all your apps will be restored. But that would be great...a bit thefty...LOL...if the apps could backup to the PC.
My phone does it too. But only if I let my phone die completely. After the "Break In" for the batt. I don't let my phone die. Usually always have some form of a charger close by. Should I look into swapping it out? I mean it's not that big of a deal for me but if it's something that should be avoided I'll go swap tomorrow.
I have had the issue a couple time but I figured out that I was actually pushing the power and volume buttons at the same time. I have the phone in the case from T-Mobile the Speck. The case seems to make the buttons super sensitive. I paid attention to what I was doing when I plugged it in and realized I was holding it in a manner while plugging it into the charger and computer that was applying pressure (not much pressure either) to the power and volume buttons. I took off the case for the day and didn't have any trouble. So it's back in the case now and I just pay close attention to where I put my fingers when plugging it in.

The same exact thing happened to my HD7 twice around four days ago right after charging (my phone is just 5 days old). I had to take out the battery for the phone to turn on again. Never happened again though. I must have pressed something.
If it's still showing the download screen even if you're not touching the volume button, then the phone is touching the volume button itself. Call 611 or 1-800-937-8997 to set up a warranty exchange. If you bought it second hand, you're stuck with it.

[Q] Register nook color with a broken screen

I bought a Nook Color from ebay that has a cracked screen. I just found out that the Nook is still under warranty but I have to register it with my BN account before I can return it. The screen is completely white and cracked so I can use it all. Does anyone know of a way to register/unregister a Nook Color via ADB?
Provided the touchscreen actually works and registers, you could possibly use the screen capture tool in the SDK package to see what is on the screen and just keep refreshing (don't know if this would actually work).
Have you called B&N. Did they state you must register to have them work with it?

Are you sure the seller has not registered it or has de-registered it? I would go there first before proceeding further. You cannot register it if it is still registered with the last owner and so far the seller sounds a little shady......
Awesome I'll try that.
Yeah they wont do anything if its not registered to me.

Chromecast red light (Think from new firmware)

My chromecast had a red light a week ago. I held the button to factory reset, it didn't reset instead it flashed white or pink (don't remember) and it showed the backdrop and worked fine. The chromecast is plugged into the USB port on the TV (WISELINK PORT, worked fine for a few months). Turned off TV, so that turned off the chromecast. Turned it back on the chromecast light is red, just noticed 2 days ago. Switched to chromecast as source and the TV got a signal but it was a black screen. Tried to FDR, didn't work so I just unplugged power and replugged it back in. Chromecast starts up with an exclaimation mark telling me to goto chromecast.com/startup-issues. Rebooted again, it said at the bottom chromecast with 3 dots (is that some old bootloader thing?). Tried using AC power adapter included in box, no signal still red light. Switched HDMI ports, no avail. I am scratching my head wondering what is wrong? From the top of my head I remember reading about some kind of hard reset on the chromecast subreddit, it had something to do with unplugging the chromecast still connecting power and doing something. The reset button isn't stuck (it clicks). The chromecast doesn't broadcast its SSID. Anyone have any other troubleshooting suggestions or things I should try?
Edit: The title should say "Chromecast red light (Think from new firmware 31432)
Sounds like your reset button is stuck.
Was your Chromecast rooted or stock?

My reset button clicks normally. It is stock. I fixed it one time by continuously turning it's power source on/off and turning it on it worked until I turned it off and back on again. (So it doesn't work , my fix doesn't work anymore)
In that case it sounds like it's (going) bad. I had one that was similar.
Call Google and get it replaced - the RMA process is pretty straightforward, at least mine was.

If you're within the store's return policy, replace it with them.
If not, you will need proof of purchase, at least that was the case as of last July.
Thank you for contacting Google. In order for me to process your warranty, I'll need to have proof-of-purchase from you validating the retail sale date. For proof-of-purchase, please take a picture of the sales receipt and send it over as an attachment to this email.

(They send you an email after determining the unit needs replacement on the phone call)
Micro Center may be able to look up your receipt in their system if you know the approximate date of purchase and you used a credit card.

Got the LCA43 update now watch dead

I was pleased to get the update, it asked that I get the charge up to 40% plus which I did and left it plugged in and proceeded. Took quite a while and then went to battery charge instead of reboot as has happened in the past.,, I did hit the power switch and it turned off, now nothing no charge indicator and no matter how long I hold the power switch nothing.. And other tips to wake this puppy up? I originally got it at Google IO.. Wonder if Google will help?

I doubt that Google will be able to help you. Also, since its being about a year now, your watch probably doesn't have a warranty from Samsung anymore. Might still worth a try though.
See if your watch is detected by pc. I remember my watch had a glitch once. It wasn't booting up and was showing up as a device in device manager. I forgot the exact name, but it was not something you usually see when you connect in fastboot or adb mode. If it does then there might still be hope.
Try to boot your watch into fastboot mode. You need to press the power button and slide with your finger on the screen from left top corner to right bottom corner. Just slide it multiple times while holding the button. If it boots then you can either do factory reset or full reflash.
Thanks for the tips, Samsung seemed quite accommodating and gave me a return ship label,, we shall see, hoping for the best and not outrageous... Xing fingers...

If they do end up "repairing" it, you will get a brand new watch. Samsung doesn't bother re-flashing or repairing old watches, they just send you a new one. Don't include your wristband though. You'll get your old one back... unless they lose it.

They were quite insistent that I send everything, band, charger and watch,, so we'll see..

Must be different in your country. Here is the instructions they sent me when I was sending my watch for repairs.
Shipping Guide Line
(1) Verify above information is correct
i.e: Name, Shipping Address, Model number and Serial number etc
(2) DO NOT INCLUDE ANY ACCESSORIES. (Cables, Remote control, manuals, Battery, Drivers, toner cartridge, imaging unit, transfer belt, waste toner bin etc), unless otherwise instructed.
(3)
a) Package Properly, this is the responsibility of sender
b) Include copy of this authorization in the package.
(4) Arrange shipping with UPS courier (United Parcel Service)
a) Attach UPS waybill on outside of the package.
b) write down UPS tracking number for your records

I guess it falls under "unless otherwise instructed" He was quite specific.. !!I did get the same printed instructions though...
As predicted Samsung sent an invoice for $188 to "repair" obviously not worth it with the new stuff coming out and particularly insulting since the OTC SW update caused it... Does not make me happy with Samsung to say the least...
I purchased mine from Amazon and in 6 months it was dead. Samsung would not warranty it in the USA because they told me that they didnt know where amazon bought it from and therefore wanted me to find out what country it came from and then they woudl give me that country customer service #. COMPLETE BULLcrap. amazon ended up giving me a refund.

Dead screen ?

My phone's screen just went black suddenly while i was using the phone last night. Nothing i do will wake the screen up, i tried rebooting by holding the power button, tried power+volume down also to boot into recovery .. no response. However the phone seems to be functioning as i can hear the screen lock sound. I think im stuck on the pin screen (the one to pass the boot-up-encryption). theres some vibration and feedback when i randomly press on the screen too.
The device is running Stock 6.0.1 , unrooted , stock kernel. Has this ever happened to anyone else ? could it be a software issue ?
I believe the LCD panel just went dead ..
Thanks!
Have you hooked it up to a computer and tried to see if it's recognised by ADB?

I had a nexus that had a faulty screen and randomly shut off or something half the screen will glitch out and one day it just stopped working but I could hear the lockscreen sounds. Your best bet would be to send it in for service maybe its a loose connecting or a hardware issue. When mine started acting up it was a loose connecting so if I hit the phone with my hand it would go back to normal and then it stopped working. Its a common issue if you do a google search many people have encountered this
That sounds to me like a return-under-warranty job. If you were in the UK you could quote the Sale of Goods Act, which specifies that an item must be of suitable quality and last a reasonable amount of time, but in my case when I returned my faulty N5 to Google after 18 months they were as good as gold, didn't quibble, simply replaced it with a refurbished one which appeared to me to be indistinguishable from brand new.
Since by definition your phone must be very close to its warranty period, depending on when you got it, I'd start with that. This is the link I used from the UK - maybe different if you're elsewhere, but you should find a link called "Get a call from a hardware specialist":

That makes sense. could be just a loose connector between the LCD panel and the MoBo ..
Problem is i live in Jordan and I got the phone from Dubai. Its still under warranty of the seller (Souq.com ; an online store .. kind of like Amazon of the middle east ), So i have to send my phone to Dubai to fix it. Now i could just go to a local phone repair shop and ask the guy to check the connectors, but im afraid that would void the warranty and not solve the problem ;( .

Well, if you figure out that it is just the screen, you can use this program for basic control with a lot of latency
