It's the checking-for-updates icon. If you happen to have the notifications pulled down when the icon appears, that's what it says.

It appears by itself sometimes, without doing OTA check.
My phone is configured with italian language and with notifications pulled down I can read "Connessione in corso al server..." which sounds like "Connecting to the server..." and is very generic.

I tried that widget and it opens a shortcut to the Samsung Members app installer.
The strange thing is that it my wife has a S8+ and there's no trace of that notification on her phone.

Men!
This icon shows something is trying to access the permissions or a component of your phone. Like if an app uses microphone for an instance, this icon will appear. Similarly, if an app is trying to access camera, this will appear.

Yes, because the phone periodically checks for updates spontaneously.
To me it seems more like a service provider "bloat apps" function.?
See screenshots
Is it truly this icon though? If so , it seems like it's bloat .

The gear shaped icon in the picture appeared yesterday and I have no clue what it means. There's no information in the drop down and I've not installed or updated anything that I'm aware of. Anyone seen this icon, or know what it means and how to get rid of it? Not rooted. Thanks.

Go into settings apps..
start with apps you do not know. Look at there icon. see if you see one similar. If not then stop one app running at a time check to see if its gone . Continue until you find the program..

To expand on this I would check to see what apps are in menu > settings > application > running
Looks like the icon that pops up for watching porn. It's permanent. :silly:
Kidding aside, I don't know what that gear is, but on the SGS3 there was a similar issue brought up and it wound up being a notification bar notification toggle icon.

Do you have the Power Controls Widget installed? There was an update to this particular widget yesterday and now it's showing the same on mine (gear)... Not sure why they added it to the notifications ...
Have you updated your tablet yet might be the update icon if not its a persistent app that's running in the background and use a app called startup manager it will help you figure out the app.

That's definitely the power control widget causing that. You were able to hide it easily until the most recent update, and I haven't figured out how to hide it since

you can hide notifications for any app in jellybean - settinsg > applications > find the application > untick 'display notifications' (or whatever it says)
Don't forget about the new JB feature.
If you hold down a notification, it will give you an "App Info" selection.

Yeah, that's exactly what it is. When Power Controls was background updated yesterday, the setting 'Notification Icon' in the app settings was reverted to 'default' (which displays the gear icon). I had previously set this to 'transparent' but now notice that that setting still takes up a slot on the notification bar & looks weird when it's sandwiched between 2 notification icons. I've since set the 'Notification Icon' setting to 'Battery 3' and have removed my Battery Widget? Reborn! widget & notification icon. Thanks to everyone for their help & suggestions. hi,
Firstly, i had " something "similar (issue)
I my case i was missing my "auto rotate" icon, in my shortcut notification bar. I managed to sort it out, eventually.
I would suggest, try the following... it might work for you.?
1. check your notification shortcut "edit" to see if its not there.
If not,
2 Go to Samsung Store, search for "Quic Panel Restore app its a Samsung app.Install and" run " it. (see screenshot)
App is suppose to fix missing shortcut icons.
Plse note, that missing shortcut icons, is a common
" bug "for Samsung devices.!
From the then S6 device's (big issues then) plus all other Samsung models afterwards.
(You can Google issue and see)
In my case, QuickPanel Restore did not fix, nothing..!
I then had a idea, and downloaded 3rd party app" Auto rotate widget "
install it and switched /activated Auto rotate.
My icon showed up in my notification shortcut bar.! !
Yes, it a Samsung software bug !
Problem is, if i uninstalled" Auto Rotate widget "
my Auto rotate icon disappears from notification shortcut bar.! O, yes...
i do have the Mobile Hot spot (see screenshot)
Good luck

hi,
no, you are correct.! I did a search now and it's not showing.
Previous occasions it showsed for me.
Samsung must have "pulled" app from App Store.
Have you tried my last suggestion,?
re look for similar 3rd party app "Mobile Hot-spot"
Google or check Play store?
Install and see if it "enables" Notification shortcut icon for mobile hot-spot.
This method, worked for me re Auto Rotate and still does...... "forces" icon to show. up in Notification bar.
Good luck
Post note
Did a quick search Play store.
One app "Quick Settings for Android" (has Mobile hot-spot)
and a few others similar apps you can install and try.
Also make sure your carrier has not blocked Mobile Hot-spot ?
(reason maybe why not showing? )

I have a Note 8, not rooted, running 7.1.1.
In my drop down notifications, I have an active notification from the Secure Folder app saying that an update is currently being downloaded in it, even though there isn't one. The notification shows 0 of 0 downloaded along with the arrow that shows an app being updated, and has been doing so since around 7am this morning. I have tried force closing the app, clearing the cache in the app and the phone, and restarting the phone, but the notification reappears. I have even gone into the app itself in the settings, and it says I have the latest version. 1.1.07.6 is the current version of it that I have.
How can I get this notification to go away?
Sorry can't help you, is that Zamastro flip don't?

That thing is indeed annoying. I usually get that, when there is an update to something that's within the folder.. One of those apps. It's usually chrome for me (until I disabled it). But more than likely, that's what it is..

I have it working on my phone for both notifications by setting the filter title to:
Code:
(running in the background)|(High power usage reminder)
This is explained if you tap the (i) icon once you're inside Notification Blocking.
Update: and don't forget to select regex!

Don't know if this is still an issue for people, but this method worked for me on my 5T.
Basically you go to Settings / Apps / Application List / Select "all apps" from drop down menu / Select "Show System Apps" from top right (three dot menu) / Select Android System / Notifications /
then deselect "Apps Consuming Battery" and "High Power Usage Reminder"

I have noticed that since the last FW update (C432) I cannot locate a setting any longer to disable "wake screen on notification".
I went through each menu item in an attempt to disable it.
Anyone have an idea where this setting has gotten to so I can turn this wake scree off?

Nope. I have pulse light notification, but the top option is gone since I installed 131(C432)
I got 131 and I still have it on my p20 pro.

Ok.. Figured it out. I had to force stop "themes" and disable. Then reboot and the menu item returned. It was reproducible as well. If I enabled themes and set a different theme, the menu item was gone.
