Coming from a nexus 10 it is painfully apparent that the internal is is insufficient to handle such a high res which is why im returning it in hope of picking an xperia Z up however having said that....
1) Looking at videos there seems to be a bit of lag and stuttering as people move around the interface.
2) People who have had experiences with the DNA might be able to tell us a bit more.

one of my friends with the DNA says its super smooth even with heavy sense skin on it and the hd display
the s4 processor is a beast.. so dont worry
and the videos dont do justice capturing the quality of the display and the smoothness of the OS.
but i would say once its out just try it out at a store.. and then go for it..
The APQ8064 is insanely fast and efficient with a very good GPU. It'll be fine. From what I've heard the Xperia Z is extremely smooth in operation.
The internals of the Nexus 10 seem fine to me

I own a Nexus 10 and have noticed very little lag. I think you are overstating the issue.
The ZL is speedy enough for me. Just about as fast as my Nexus 4, and the ZL is running very beta firmware. Gaming might be a different story, but most of the good games offer some type of resolution scaling.
I don't know whether the S4pro is sufficient to maintain a 100% smooth and fast ui experience, but the videos I have seen all seem to show that it is powerfull enough. Web browsing in particular seems super smooth.
My only concern with the XZ is the battery life, I really hope it's better than the XS.
Google knows best and they have access to both. They decided on the Qualcomm S4 pro for the Nexus 4 and the Exynos 5 for the Nexus 10. You figure out the rest. If Samsung/Google wanted to use the S4 pro, it wouldn't be hard considering Samsung is only Qualcomms biggest customer and uses their chips for the North American Galaxy S handsets.
I don't even think the Qualcomm S4 pro can even support 2560 x 1600 actually.
---------- Post added at 06:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:37 PM ----------
Yup, I was correct. One version of the S4 pro maxes out at WUXGA(with a modem) resolution and the more powerful one is a little higher at QXGA(without a modem) resolutiuon.
It can't even run the Nexus 10 even if they wanted to.

Enough said, the S4 pro chokes a bit on sense and 1080p. Not sure how much better the tablet Z would fair with 1920 x 1200.
You won't get much smoother than the Nexus 10. Wait for an update before you sell. When I had mine before my Brother went overseas and couldn't wait until Google restocked, my Nexus 10 was lights out smoother than my Nexus 4, which has an S4 pro and a much lower resolution.
The S4 pro no only handle high res. ITS MAKE CARNAGES AND SMASH HEADS!!!!!!:cyclops:
Hi Everyone,
It seems that i am in a lot of confusion over which phone to purchase.
After a lot of thinking, i have narrowed down my phone search to either the Xperia Z or Xperia Z1.
I absolutely love the looks of both these devices.
And so far following are the cons of both these devices :
Xperia Z :
Outdated S4 Pro processor, the processor is same as that of an almost previous generation nexus which is available cheaply!
Sub-par camera performance, one of my friend is using Xperia Z, the photo quality is definately lower compared to even an galaxy s3
Sub-par screen display quality, yes I have noticed the viewing angles and they annoy me
Xperia Z1 :
Heating issues, while researching the forum I found that majority of users are reporting heating issues even under normal web browsing.
Yellow tint on screen panel, discovered again while researching the forum. It seems that some one pointed out the batch numbers having this issue.
I would have almost definitely gone for the z1 if above two points had not come into attention.
My first question : Is the heating problem really that bad?. If the phone heats up even while browsing, then how can we even use snapdragon 800 for playing games?
Secondly is it possible to identify the batch number of a model before the sealed box is opened?. Can Indian users of Xperia Z1 list down the batch number of their devices and whether or not they have the yellow tint issue?
As far as usage is concerned, I would consider myself as a mediocre phone user. I play casual games which are not graphics/processor intensive ( read subway surfer, candy crush, etc).
I have tried hard core games like dead trigger/real racing 3, and I dont think I would be interested in playing such games on mobile device any time soon.
Can anyone please provide a personal opinion on whether the Z1 is worth shelling out an extra 10,000 Rupees for the sake of better camera and future proof processor. Any opinion on this part would be appreciated as i am literally bummed on it.
Please help
I need a new phone, and am currently interested in the Huawei P9 Plus or the Samsung S7 Edge.
The main tak of my new phone should be for video and photography (besides me using it as a phone )
Which one is the better camera?
Based on experience
For video the Samsung is the better phone (4K Video). Based on reading the spec sheets.
Moreover the S7E has the optical image stabilization (OIS) that is very useful especially for video recording.
And now the international unbranded S7E can be found with a price slightly lower than the P9+.
Huawei P9 plus
I have used samsung for 6 years .. I never saw any of their cameras that can match that of the P9 or P9 plus .
The P9 line has the Leica double lens technology , it does not need OIS to perform in a superior way .. I am now the proud owner of the P9 plus ..

Hello Craleb,
Why do you say that? Is that based on personal experience, or is that based om comparing the specs of both phone?

Personal experience here:
Video : S7 Edge => OIS is a win. P9 Plus come with digital IS but your video will still be choppier and trimmed due to the technology.
Photo : S7 Edge => Much superior autofocus and low-light performance (f/1.7). Both perform admirably during daytime so the difference here come down pretty much to personal preference. I personally like the Leica interface and some of the modes come with that (shoot first, focus later, filters, light photography, night mode etc). P9 tends to get a little too grainy during low-light shots and slow to get a focus on things.
Black&White Photography : P9 Plus, hands down. No B&W filter can come close to the level of details and contrast that the dedicated cam on the P9 Plus can bring. The result is just gorgeous even when you shoot the most random stuff.
As far as the potential of the tech go, P9 Plus has much more potential. The post processing and the lowlight performance can theoretically be improved with a software update but I wont hold my hope for that. As is now, the S7 Edge still has the edge (forgive the pun) when you consider the overall performance for things you use daily. So unless you are a big fan of B&W photography, pick the Edge.
Great review. That confirms pretty much the general opinion on the online reviews I've read elsewhere. Have you played with RAW images at all? Just wondering if that improves things.
The S7 is sharp, detailed and hard to fault
but the P9 has its charms. It leans heavily on artistic styling, where image fidelity comes second. sometimes it has trouble focusing and without ois blur is fairly common in low light situations.
Some people look Samsung oversharpening filter as more detail... but it's really exaggerated on S7/S7E.

yer that's valid. tbh the output from the S7 cam doesn't show any improvement over the S6
compared side by side when zoomed right in, P9 pics do show a noticeable lack of detail however

One thing to consider regarding the P9 camera is that it has issues with popular apps. As of today, the camera doesn't work properly with WhatsApp or Snapchat. You get odd issues like auto zoom, slowmo videos, audio issues.....and no update from Huawei to fix.

Samsung can shoot 120 and 240 fps. Big deal for slow mo lovers.
Huawei p9 plus destroys samsung s7 edge in terms of camera,p9 plus can do manual configuration, just need to study about iso, exposure, shutter etc. just like DSLR,if auto i take S7 edge, but if manual mode,Big YES for Huawei P9 Plus.
1st of all the device performance is not smooth at all, even in the simplest tasks, swiping pics in gallery for example is not 60hz smooth, I can see the stuttering.
2nd, for all the phones/tablets Ive ever owned I usually use about 50% screen brightness, for this tablet I needed to go for almost 90% to have the same brightness, 50% is simply too dark.
3rd, this one is my fav, because its beyond ridiculous, different apps have different screen brightness, for example, home screen is bright/normal then when I go to firefox it goes dimmer!!!
4th, unlocking the boatloader is a nightmare with the "The Huawei ID used to apply for the unlock code has not been used on the device for more than 14 days." error.
5th, battery charging is slow.
6th, since my screen is 90% all the time, well, battery life is gonna terrible, I think.
Go to power saving features and switch from smart to performance. Huawei still has the annoying method of changing display brightness depending on the app on the lower energy profiles. Especially annoying since Chrome is one of the apps that use a lower brightness. That should also fix some other performance issues you have.
Hey, thanks for the tips, I turned power saving off and ROG on and I am quite happy. I wasn't disappointed before (I was just replacing a Kindle HDX 7in.) but I am happier now. I just use it for books and streaming video no games.
Sent from my BTV-W09 using Tapatalk
I never understood that power saving gimmick. It doesn't add much to the battery life and instantly sucks. I once send back a Huawei P7 because of the aggressive screen dimming and learned later that it can be turned off. I mean nowadays Chrome should be the most used app on any phone, why dimm the screen there?
Hope you enjoy your tablet now; one of the last things I dislike is the responsiveness of the screen and in another thread they just wrote about an incoming update to fix this. Yay
thanks for these remark, I think I will not buy this finally

@umibuzu For what it is worth, I got my unlock code right away. I did not encounter the 2 week message at all and the unlocking was a simple adb command.
"Huawei still has the annoying method of changing display brightness depending on the app on the lower energy profiles."
Thank you, this was really messing with my head.
I found that most android tablets take a couple of days to settle in. Although the power savings are okay, turning them off during this period will speed up the settling period. You may be able to turn the power savings back on after a couple of days. Good Luck! I'm waiting on mine from HK (wanted the international version with the phone capability).

You don't see much development for devices that don't have a snapdragon cpu. I knew before I bought the Mediapad M3 not to expect much more than an unlocked bootloader and root. If you want custom roms you need to do some research on XDA BEFORE you buy and look for a device with active development. If you had checked this forum before you bought the Mediapad you would have seen there is no current rom development.

I didn't. I looked for a replacement of nexus 7 ii. But cannot find it for more than a year. I just can't imagine being stuck with manufactures unterstock forever. Why anyone ever buy this. If you don't need development or this is for your granny that's knows how to push two buttons why bother just buy ipad
Just my 2 pence:
The price performance is good compared to other tablets especially compared to Samsung Galaxy tablets. The housing etc. is well crafted. It´s also perfect for (mobile) movie consumption, really good internal speakers (very impressive what Harman Kardon did here) and a bright 16:10/16:9 high resolution display. Most other tablets do use the 4:3 aspect ratio for their displays which is inconvenient and annoying for movie playback due to letterboxing. The 8" size is also perfect for mobile use, not as small as 7" but also not too big like a 10" Display. The tablet supports also HEVC/H265 playback which is not standard for most android tablets.
The original ROM is already on Android 6 and Nougat is in pipe so the tablet is not going to be outdated so soon. EMUI is probably not everyone´s favorite but in that case there should be enough alternative launchers available.
The tablet can be easily rooted, kernel sources and a TWRP are also available, so the base for an original android development is already there. XPosed can be installed and is working. The downside is the complicated bootloader unlocking due to the english webpage not properly working.
There had been reviews criticizing the perfomance of the Kirin 950 but this is IMHO due to using the intelligent power plan instead of the perfomance setting. I think the intelligent plan could be improved on Huawei´s side also concerning those automatic display brightness issues. But overall there is nothing I would consider as a no-go.
I've had my tablet now for about 36 hours. No it's not the latest software and no it's not the fastest hardware. But what I did right was found a model with the phone availability and while I'm not convinced I am getting LTE signal because I show hspa+ and at&t says the APN settings are right, I am truly more than happy with the capabilities of this tablet. I can use one device that I can physically see because the text is big enough and I don't have to carry a phone with me anymore. I love this thing and will use it as long as I can. My best suggestion is find a model that can make calls. It made my day and I bet it would make yours.

have a problem with that tablet fingerprint sensor, it works when it wants and after a while the fingerprint sensor stops working. Even the menu settings disappears, fingerprint ID is gone when I restart the effect is zero only when I reset the factors it works but after a while the fingerprint sensor refuses to work again. Does anyone has the same problem? What should I do?

Hi, thanks so much for this, I have just ordered my Huawei MediaPad M3 and since I consume a lot of content in H.265 format in 1080p I was a bit worried.
I'd like to confirm if you've used the MediaPad M3 for this purpose too? Have you experienced any lags or any other complaints you may have?
Many thanks in advance
Actually I´m using regularly mostly videos with h264 but I just tried also HEVC/h265 @ 1080p, for e.g. with this video encoding -> MediaInfo:

I've been using a MediaPad M3 for a week, replacing a frustratingly slow iPad 2. My phone for the last year has been an excellent Huawei P9, and since it is still as snappy as the day I got it (unlike my old Samsung Galaxy which was getting quite laggy between apps after a few months) , I decided the M3 was a good choice. And it is - it's really an overgrown P9, just as fast, but also great for watching videos on long haul flights. I've yet to find a file it couldn't play.
Only minor annoyances are the Micro USB plug, rather than Huawei's usual/newer Type C used in my P9, and the fingerprint sensor being a bit awkward at times - particularly during setup. While doing the initial finger/thumb scan, after you've scanned 50% and for it to 'see' the rest of your print, you're forced to position your finger/thumb way too close to the screen which then thinks you've tapped an [exit] from the scanning process. I really like my smaller P9's rear fingerprint sensor, but I guess on a phablet fingers don't naturally fall on any particular spot on the rear of the larger case.

just came out today,? is will their be a mod to put note 8 120hz or im i going to hear the magic words ...no its hardware thing?
Um ... why , 2k screen at a 120hz would take some power. Plus with small size really wouldn't be worth it. High fps really only matters in shooters on pc. On a phone there are too many weak links to make it good for games that would call for 120hz..

Hz (refresh) is not the same as fps (framerate)...
And higher refresh rate actually makes everything smoother, including simple animations, etc. For example, I have a three monitor setup (2 x 60hz, 1 x 144hz), and you can easily see the difference just by moving the mouse cursor. Much smoother and easier on the eyes.
Razer includes a 4000mah battery...if Samsung bumps up the Note's battery capacity again in the future (and/or introduces further OS optimization for increased efficiency) then it could mitigate any additional draw in power. Personally, I think a Note 9 or 10 with faster refresh would be sweet

Yes it can be done, the Razer just did it. Not likely on the Note 8 though, but can't really say for sure. I do know that the refresh rates of some monitors can be overclocked, but it only works up to a certain point (much like ram or processors). So even if it were possible to increase refresh on the Note 8, I don't think it would be anywhere the Razer's 120hz. Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong though.

Just found this article which explains a lot:
https://www.androidauthority.com/120hz-displays-the-future-or-just-a-gimmick-782717/
Sounds like the refresh rate on the Note 8 could theoretically be increased through software alone, but that it would likely introduce issues such as screen tearing, etc. In contrast, the Razer's panel (for example) has hardware technology to reduce or eliminate these types of artifacts. So I'd say yes it could techically be done on the Note 8 to some degree, but even then the results wouldn't be great. Better to have the hardware that makes it work right and delivers the desired/expected visual experience.
OLED is not able to do those high refresh rates yet.... Its hardware
Even if you got it to work it would absolutely kill the battery and if/any games even are optimized for 120 hz is another story.

You can see the difference if you have the video/game that uses it otherwise it's number theater . I would venture most folks couldn't tell between 60 and 144 unless it was in action. 24 to 60 yes, but beyond 60 is splitting hairs. Also on the small form factor of a phone, with the control latency of a phone not sure tour getting bang for buck . I am aware that Hz and fps are different ,just as I am aware that using different refresh rates in a triple monitor set up is just asking for problems as well. To me it's just the same as THX speakers on a phone or Dolby Atmos on a phone, yes they're there but it's more like a gimmick because of the small form factor. I am also biased towards pc gaming , and could not imagine playing any serious shooter on a phone, just like I couldn't do it on a console either(but at least consoles have the horsepower now).
My biggest fear is this catches on and Samsung ditches it's Amoled displays for LCD just to get the specs for the next phone.
Sent from my Galaxy Note8 using XDA Labs
No as I said you can see the difference just moving a mouse (or watching movies, etc). Also, no issues at all in a triple monitor setup with different refresh rates, so long as you know what you're doing. Obviously if you try and play a game on 3 monitors at once with different rates then you're asking for trouble lol. Anyways, moot point now as OP's question has been answered.
Animation in android
Can the animations and UI in android currently even run at 120? Are they not rendered at or around 60fps?

Sounds like the refresh rate on the Note 8 could theoretically be increased through software alone, but that it would likely introduce issues such as screen tearing, etc. In contrast, the Razer's panel (for example) has hardware technology to reduce or eliminate these types of artifacts. So I'd say yes it could techically be done on the Note 8 to some degree, but even then the results wouldn't be great. Better to have the hardware that makes it work right and delivers the desired/expected visual experience.

I wouldn't put too much credit in this article. They seem to be sort of talking out of their asses on this.
Adaptive display technologies reduce screen tearing yes, but their main benefit is the reduction of resources. Allow me to explain.
Your free to correct me if I'm wrong but this is my full understanding.
When a screen displays an image it has to get told to display an image. However, it's not quite as simple as the CPU saying, please display an image.
The screen will continue to display an image until it's told to Change to a new one (think of when your PC freezes. This is why the image can sometimes freeze. The display adapter has stopped sending new images to the monitor).
So what happens when your computer is creating a new image, 1000x a second? Well, it would tell the display to "display" 1000 images in a single second, even though it's only capable of let's say 60 (this is where 60hzcomes from) this creates the tearing effect. To combat this there are controls we can use, Such as vertical sync, where we can just Pull an image from that 1000 image pool when we want to display a new image. For example, your phone might tell android, since it is running at 60hz to just pull a new image from that pool once every second. We could also limit the software to only create a new image once every second as well to combat this. The problem with these is they require CPU cycles. And they have an impact on the memory, with the frame buffer holding that 1000 count image pool. Ideally went want the CPU to only worry about creating an image when we 'want' one. So that it can move on to the next process in it's Queue.
With adaptive display technology, we can 'sync' these two numbers without creating a significant performance impact, and because we have synced them the overall smooth transitions require less motion smoothing, or blur effects that alot of movies might use to help create that clean look (This magic is why movies at 24fps look fluid). When it comes to Android, 120hz vs 60hz would most definitely be noticeable, so long as UI transitions and the OS itself had animations that could display 120 different frames. Currently I think that it does not. Also, let's be honest, until the hardware starts supporting it, android won't support it. We are starting to see that support now, in the Razer phone and in some Sony phones.
I am unsure of the currently refresh limits of OLED. I do know however that OLEDs response time is faster than that of LCD. Response time doesn't directly effect refresh rate, That would be the job of the display controller, or whatever that strip is called haha. Response time is important though as it'll determine the quality of the images being displayed at higher refresh rates. Which would be the significant factor in whether you would want your display running at 120hz or simply 60hz
Also... Before anyone chimes in, with "you can't see more than 60 frames per second" your wrong. Don't bother. Sorry, but you've done zero research.
Note 8
So samsung Note 8 runs on 60 GHz?
And razer runs on 120 GHz
