Installing TWRP without unlocking bootloader ? - Lenovo Zuk Z2 Pro Questions & Answers

I've seen that on Lenovo P8 tablet, it's possible to install a special version of TWRP using QFil, without unlokcing bootloader first.
Any idea if this could be achieved too for Z2 Pro ?
Maybe by tweaking some QPST files to use the TWRP recovery instead of stock ?
Would be great to restore stock 1.9, install TWRP, and still keep the OTA updates, even after magisk

Yes. It is possible. Copy the twrp in the Phone storage.
Now in ADB,
Jus boot TWRP & install the twrp file stored in the phone.
I tried flashing twrp through fastboot. It didn't work.
But the above method is easy & will definitely work.
The above method worked for me. I am running 2.5.462 with custom twrp. No root & without unlocking bootloader.

What is the advantage of installing TWRP without root? I am currently looking to transfer Google Authenticator accounts (I have too many) from my Z2 Plus (ZUK Z2) to a newer phone. It seems that I need access to root to get to the underlying db and extract secrets so that I can add them back on the new phone. The normal process get to root involves first unlocking bootloader and I believe that will end up doing a reset. I tried taking a adb backup of com.google.android.apps.authenticator2, but I get an empty file that doesn't include any data. Is there a way to elevate the privileges just enough to get access to the Authenticator data? Can TWRP help in this regard?

Looking to Root - running marshmellow stock

Just had a problem after using root toolkit to attempt root on nexus 6 with marshmellow. (6.0 ), build MRA58R. After this attempt, got the message that" device is corrupted" and would not boot into system. Luckily bootloader was still unlocked and was able to flash stock image. Phone boots fine now with Boatloader unlcocked, and TWRP is gone, with no root. How do I root from here and install TWRP again without going through what happened before.
In the beginners guide to root, Chanifire's link hasn't been working and I want to be sure I do this right to avoid what happened with the toolkit. Also, my phone is setup with apps and data, and I dont't want to loose my setup.
Thanks for your help.

Best method to image/backup phone for a later full restore?

My phone is not rooted (in case that make a difference on what method should be used in this case)
I would like to make a full image backup of the phone, factory-reset it, and then re-image it from this backup at a later date.
What is the best method to do the full backup (image) and later restore for a non-rooted phone?
Thank you
You can temporarily boot to a custom recovery like TWRP easily with Nexus root tool kit.
Advanced Utilities - Launch - Fastboot Boot - Custom Recovery
and make a nandroid backup.
I think you need to have your Bootlocker unlocked though....
From a very quick and unscientific Google scan it looks as if pure1water is right - you'll have to unlock your bootloader, which means YOU'LL WIPE YOUR PHONE!!!
(Just making sure... )
To install TWRP you don't need to be rooted.
There are lots of guides, so I won't repeat the detail. You can use Wugfresh's Nexus Root Toolkit (NRT) to set up your PC/laptop drivers so that you can use ADB.
Developer options/enable USB debugging/reboot to bootloader/temporarily fastboot TWRP (or install it permanently, since you'll be using it to restore)/take TWRP backup/copy to PC for safety.
It's well-known that XDA doesn't really approve of NRT when used as a way to circumvent knowledge. Use it for the driver setup, then read a great deal about how to do these steps that I've skipped quickly over above. That way you'll be able to recover when (not "if") you make a mistake and get a bootloop without asking panicky questions in the forum.
to install twrp for a one time use only..
fastboot boot recovery recoveryname.img
to install twrp permanently..
fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img
If you bootloader isn't already unlocked I think the best you can get is backing up your apps and app data with helium..
It wont be nearly as good as a full TWRP backup but will be able to get a lot of stuff backed up.
I know this doesn't answer your question directly, but just so you know there is at least a little bit of backing up you can do without root or an unlocked bootloader to boot or flash twrp.

I can't figure out why anyone who knows enough to worry about full phone backups wouldn't have unlocked the bootloader on their Nexus 6 as the very first order of business.
But if you haven't unlocked the bootloader (which will wipe your phone), then the best you can do is to root it, install Titanium Backup, and do a full backup Apps+data. That's not as good or nice as a bootloader level backup, but will get most of the job done for a restore.

Don't you need to have your bootloader unlocked before rooting though?

internal storage not mounted!!!

I can't use my internal storage!! Cant copy anything into it!! It does show that thier is internal storage shows that its free but cant copy anything into it??? I have twrp in my phone but after a factory reset in vanished!! I rooted my phone installed than uninstalled it!!! Any help?
Next time, root and install TWRP again!
Why the hell do you need to ****ed up your phone guys? Is the stock firmware not enough for you?
I'm not sure whether he wants to copy stuff into internal storage via TWRP recovery or while the phone is booted up.
Mounting issue usually means you tried to factory reset via TWRP when it probably should of been done via unlock bootloader method.
I don't think I ever did factory reset via TWRP when upgrading from Marshmallow to Nougat + Debranding + Root.
If u are using the old (wrong) twrp recovery you are not able to use your internalstorage while booted into recovery, but it should be accesable if u boot into android.
Since there is only systemless root for our device your system partition dont get touched while rooting, but if u flash SuperSu.zip which is not specially for EMUI5 (there is a special one), you maybe tried the wrong SuperSu.zip file and you "****ed" up your SystemPartition - you need to flash the right system.img now - just use official firmware and start rooting from scratch.
What you do now?
READ
READ
READ
Flash the rollback package.
Install desired firmware.
Unlock Bootloader
Flash TWRP
Flash SuperSu.zip for EMUI5 in TWRP.
Thanks for all of you guys!!! I have just got out of this ****!!!
The problem was i was not able to copy anything into my internal storage no even install apps from play store!!! !!! But it is resolved!!! Thanks for you reply guys

OTA update over Magisk? What's gonna happen?

If I have a P9 on Nougat B391, I receive an OTA, am currently rooted on Magisk v14. If I install the OTA anyway? What will happen? I know I will lose root, but will my bootloader be relocked? Am I going to lose any data?
Would like to know what will happen next as I am thinking of installing it. thanks!
there are 2 posible outcomes, maybe 3.
1. update will be successfull and you will lose root, twrp, bootloader can be locked too, but on fastboot it will shown as unlocked, if you cant instal twrp, then you need to unlock bootloader even if there is tuped unlocked.
2. update will fail and you will be back on same build you was.
3. never hapened to me, but are possible, that phone got bricked!

IMO, (2) is most possible utcome. (3) may happen if you force DLOAD and other manual methods.
Better:
1) unroot by Magisk Uninstaller, find the download link in the post https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74913863&postcount=1
2) flash from TWRP original stock boot img
3) wipe Dalwik and Cache from TWRP
3) flash from fastboot original stock recovery
4) let it make OTA update but select in the System Update settings to use Full (not differential) update - it will not delete your apps and settings
Of course, you will loose root and TWRP but bootloader will remain unlocked and you will not risk bricking the phone.

Magisk Uninstaller does not wipe your phone.
However, unlocking or relocking Bootloader (from Fastboot) triggers Factory restore

!!!Please Answer THIS!!!

Unlocking bootloader always erases Data Partition. First check that yours one is unlocked or not, not most devices are come locked. Unlocking will take time as Xiaomi gives you permission to unlock by their own software.
Make a backup, get all your data off then root it. I'm not entirely sure if you can unlock without erasing, but you should never be in a position where you can't afford to reinstall your applications.
This is why it is always best to get twrp on your phone asap so you can back up it.
No, unlocking bootloader doesn't wipes data but you must backup everything just in case anything goes wrong.
it is always recommended to backup everything when flashing ROM, kernel, mod, zip, flashing rom via fastboot method and recovery. in short you should backup everything in all this cases.

Actually I know most part and have already done getting permission but this was just a quick question as that's my sister's device and she won't accept its data being erased still thanks for your quick answer...
And by the way that device's bootloader is locked I have checked it.

Yes i have flashed recovery and roms i always do backup important thing and i take screenshot of installed apps before making any changes and save them to pc or to cloud storage.
there was issue i had was when i flashed TWRP 3.2.1.0 via adb i do not why but it asked me for password i didn't know to password so i had to wipe everything including internal storage and data.
latest twrp is must which is TWRP 3.2.1.0 in order to flash Oreo based ROM.
i was using TWRP 3.0.2-0 before and i had no issue with this recovery i has flashed several nougat roms on this recovery even have upgraded and downgraded from miui9 to miui 8 everything worked perfectly.
i don't know why but i wasn't able to flash any marshmallow based or nougat based roms on TWRP 3.2.1.0 recovery.
yes i did lose data when upgrading from TWRP 3.0.2-0 to TWRP 3.2.1.0 but i had done backup so no issues.
i would highly recommend you to do backup if you are making any changes in your device.

Thanks bro
you need to install stock rom after unlocking
Unlocking Xiaomi Redmi4x santoni bootloader doesn't delete the data partition, but after unlocking the bootloader your phone won't boot, you need to install the same stock rom it was on phone previously.
Download MIUI Stock ROMs (if you didn't make OTA update from MIUI, check Older versions and download the correct ROM)
You can copy the ROM image to phone before unlocking or if you have already unlocked and stuck in boot, you can copy the ROM to an USB flash drive.
You need ADB installed on your PC.
Download the TWRP for Xiaomi Redmi 4X image.
If you want to restore the existing state of your phone, you need to make a backup of the data partition.
Press Volume Down + Power until phone gets in FASTBOOT.
Connect phone to PC with USB cable.
From PC command prompt type the command: fastboot.exe boot twrp-3.2.1-0-santoni.img
TWRP will start on your phone, you can backup all of the partitions, but you need only the data partition to restore.
Now Install the stock rom (you can select USB OTG if ROM is on USB drive), then RESTORE the backed up DATA partition only.
