Screen freeze, blue box keeps scrolling - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hello everyone, I have experienced this problem quite afew times already. All of the sudden, I would not be able to use the touch screen, and the blue box would appear and keep scrolling to different parts of the screen. I've attached the pictures below. Restarting the phone doesn't solve the problem. I'm not sure how it got back to normal again. Any clues on what is this problem?

I have heard that themes cause some sort of problems, are you using one?

Have you tinkered around with anything in the Development Settings? There is a setting that I'm sure shows you the areas that are being refreshed.

Hello, I'm using a theme currently. Using High_contrast_theme_II. I'll change the theme and see how it goes!
Thanks for your input!

That's the funny thing, I didn't tinker in any settings. It just randomly appears and randomly goes away.

Hi,
@xgsh, it looks like Voice Assistant? https://youtu.be/T-QgE4bT0c0?t=91
Take a look in Settings-> Accessibility-> Vision-> Voice Assistant and see if it's enabled, maybe in the other Voice Assistant settings.

Hello, I think it is something similar. But for my case I am not able to touch anything on the screen at all. It is like a screen freeze, And that blue box keeps scrolling.

Hello everyone, I have found out the issue already. It is under Accessibility > Direct Access. Apparently it is on. So if you have it on, pressing the Vol Up + Power button at the same time causes the issue above to happen.

Just for anyone coming in here looking to solve this as well: it might be the above issue, but also you may have Universal Switch turned on. Reboot your device, press the Home button three times (that should temporarily disable that pesky blue box preventing you from clicking stuff, and then go to Settings > Accessibility >> Dexterity and Interaction >Universal switch and disable it. You're good to go again.

Froyo Roms and WiFi disconnect while sleeping?

It seems like after, I don't know, maybe 5-10 minutes or more of the phone being in sleep mode, when I unlock the phone and go to do something, like check mail, or hit a website, the WiFi is always showing disconnected. Wifi Logo with the Red X over it in the upper left of some Roms.
Then, it jumps and tries to reconnect after a few seconds and shows the normal connection icon bars onthe right. Kind of frustrating waiting 10-15 seconds for it to reconnect.
Is this normal?
Every Froyo build I have tried (three different) have this same behavior. It seems the WiFi is disconnecting itself while sleeping. Then once awake again, it connects back to the access point.
I can't find any setting that seems to be affecting this.
Anybody else have this issue? Is it by design?
Thanks
Search didn't help? Really, this was brought up a lot.
Press "menu" when in WiFi menu, I bet you can take it from there.
Ah, and look in the Apps section, first page will probably help you, if the suggestion above didn't.
No setting?
How about Settings->Wireless&networks->Wi-Fi settings->(press Menu)Advanced->Wi-Fi sleep policy?
(and yes, I do agree, they shouldn't hide an option like that behind a menu in settings, think that's the only setting screen with a menu)
The wifi sleep policy is broken is some phones. See this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=706454
or google it, there's a bunch of people complaining about it for a long time.

This option is no guarantee..unfortunately (thereĀ“s a bug in the OS)
Haha...what a tool I am. Could have sworn I looked in the menu and didn't see that option.
Will give it a go and see if it works and not a bug like some have had with it.
Stupid policy by the way by default to set it like that. Kind of like when closing the lid on a laptop running Wiondows. It goes to sleep by default?!?! Ok.
My searched terms must have sucked also...I went through pages and couldn't find this.
Thanks.

Haptic feedback disabled, still vibrates for long screen touch

Hi folks,
I swear I had this solved once but after a factory reset I can't find a way to do it again:
Settings > Sound > Feedback > Haptic feedback disabled
In fact everything under Feedback is disabled.
Yet when on the home screen I long press an icon in order to move it or delete it a feedback vibration occurs.
Is there another setting for this?
Cheers,
Daniel
Hi
under feedback tab uncheck all the 4 boxes and note you're not in silent mode(vibrating)
then check the issue and report the result.
Goodluck
Thanks a lot,
that's exactly what I did.
Please see attachment.
For some weird reason the vibrating
still happens for long screen touches
(but not for anything else).
In other words, is there a way to completely shut the phone up vibration-wise?
Am not sure about TouchWizz but I think other launchers have the option to disable the long press feedback..sorry can't remember for sure as I've been running ICS for quite some time

Try downloading "Spare parts" app from Google Play and disabling "Haptic feeback" from it...worked for me.
In Settings >> Sound , you've got "Vibration intensity". Pull all sliders all the way to the left and this will get rid of all vibrations (well at least I didn't notice any since I changed that).
I am not sure if it disables the "battery charged" vibration though, and don't want to risk being woken up at night to check

[Q] Screen off app

Hi there,
im just searching for a simple app, that i can launch, which will turn off the screen, nothing more. Ok, now you say search the play store and you are right, there are plenty of them.
BUT all of them have the same problem: The screen goes off first, then back on and finally shows the lockscreen. But im just look for off, nothing more. Does anyone know an app which does work correctly?
Thanks!

not sure if it is what you are searching, but try an app called Gravity Screen-Off, I use it and I've almost forgotten that the One has a power button on top

I am using turn off the screen app without issues. I like it because you can change the shortcut label and has really polished look to the icon.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=turn.off.the.lights&hl=en
I have also used the lock screen widget, but it takes up more memory and the icon is not as nice:

Thanks for the input. Gravity screen off hast the same problem unfortunately. Turns the screen off, it flips back on and i see the standard sense lockscreen.
@crushalot: I tried "turn off the screen" already, same behaviour as mentioned in my first post. Are you on a viper ROM? Im using InsertCoin...

Yes, I'm on ViperOne. (Not ViperRom, confusing isn't it!)
I have seen the issue you describe in the OT but I can't recall having that issue in months. Not sure what it has to do with, could be a conflicting setting/config in the rom.
Try searching on that symptom to try and track down what causes it.
ViperOne allows you to set the volume down button to lock which is nice. Also a custom kernel like ElementalX will allow you to use the htc logo to lock/wake.

If you're into using pie launchers you can use key 26 in lmt to turn off the screen.

Unless you disable the lockscreen or delay the actual time after the screen turns off to lock, you WILL see the lockscreen after turning off your screen.

What do you mean by this? I have not disabled the lockscreen (I use the productivity lock screen on every rom I flash) and changed nothing with delays and the app I referenced in my original response works perfectly on every rom I have tried.

From what I gather, the OP wants something to turn the screen off and make it NOT go to the lockscreen but the home screen instead, but I don't believe that's possible to do without disabling the lock screen or using an app that does so?
Although, I take that back. It is possible using Gravity Screen if you enable the "Disable Screen Lock" feature as it allows you to turn off your phone without the power button and doesn't enable your screen lock (unless you said in your settings that you want to activate the screen lock right after the phone goes to sleep). I have mine set to lock on power button and automatically lock a minute after sleep so that way, Gravity Screen does not lock my device. Although, this isn't the solution you were looking for per say.

Not completely right. I just want to press a button/launch an app and my screen goes off and stays off. Nothing more. At the moment it turns back on showing me the lockscreen which i generally want to use, but i dont want to see it in this particular situation . I hope all clarities eliminated ...
On my old One X with Android 4.1.2 everything works fine with those screen off apps...
@ crushalot: I will take a look at custom kernels, maybe they will help .

I honestly have no idea what you're trying to say now. Are you saying that the screen goes off, but comes back on after you turn it off? Or are you saying that when you turn it back on, it shows the lockscreen?

The first part is right . It just comes back on from itself, right after turning off in the first place. I dont press any button, the phone is doing this on its own.
(Launch the screen off app -> screen goes off -> screen turns back on -> shows lockscreen) -> after screen timeout screen off again -> stays off. This is what happens. The first part (in parentheses) happens in about 1 second of time.
Im using InserCoin with Sense and llama for automation.

Try disabling any screen off animations like CRT off.
Do you use any apps like Screebl? They are known to cause this issue.

Hm i have the CRT Animation activated at the moment, because i really like it, but maybe it interferes with the shutdown...ill keep that in mind, going to flash again on sunday^^.
And no screebl or something like this, screen on/off is a manual thing at the moment.

[Q] Dialer screen loss

I'm running 4.4.4. Rooted and unlocked.
This problem occurred before I upgraded.
When I call someone, the dialer screen immediately disappears and when I'm done with the call I usually have to press the power button 3 or 4 times to get my lock screen back. I have blue tooth for my hearing aids. When I use that, it doesn't disappear although after the call I need to hit the power button twice for the lock screen. I might have changed some settings inadvertently due to the screen changing when it sould have turned off. I think the blue tooth on my hearing aids is what activates the screens. I'm using Apex launcher. I have had my phone completely apart because of a plugged mic opening. I don't think this anything to do with the problem at hand, At one time on my phone I saw a setting someplace where I could end a call with the power button. Anyone know where that's at? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I might flash it back completely stock.
Moto X DE
Do you have two dialer apps? I had a similar problem and the problem ended up being having the stock dialer as well as the google dialer installed.
I got rid of the stock dialer and then the problem went away.
Settings > Accessibility > Power button ends call (check that).
Do you have a screen protector? If misplaced, it may activate the sensor that turns off the screen when the phone is up to your face.

To anyone having this issue: I have seen this issue several times now with multiple members. I haven't seen a working solution yet except that a factory reset sometimes solves it, and flashing back to 100% stock as per the return to stock thread (in the General sub-forum) always solves it. I know it is often a pain to have to set everything up all over again, but it is the only solution I'm aware of.
Good luck
Yep factory reset was the only thing that fixed it for me

Already,,, no use.
Now safe mode tried and no screen wakeup.
It means some third party app issue.
I'm trying to figure out which app exactly.
I had this with my wife's phone.... Screen literally cam on everytime the phone was moved.... She has a flip case, which i assumed was the culprit, and i could see the screen pop on even if she moved the phone to one side a little...
I found the answer to our solution in the settings somewhere under advanced features/motion and gestures.... Untick all that lift to wake crap!
Screen stays off now until you press power button or double tap screen...

I tried the same already but problem was still there.
Since once I reboot into safe mode, there w no issue. then started apps one by one in normal mode,,,, now not facing issue. I suspect one or two third party apps. Still not finalised which app exactly as these apps got updated meanwhile.
Any way thanks,,,,
my issue already resolved.
