Why no interest in custom ROMs? - Nokia 8 Questions & Answers

This phone is priced competitively and has great hardware, but the custom ROM scene for it is nonexistent. Is it because of a small number of owners/users, or something else?

There is no way to unlock the bootloader for now (HMD promised they will allow it, but did not say when), so no way to flash Custom ROM.

Nokia themselves are to blame. Unlike brands such as HTC who openly support bootloader unlocking Nokia don't, for now. They also haven't released source code or implemented treble with their Oreo release.

I see... Did HMD unlock any of their other devices yet? Also - how likely, would you say, is an official LOS release sometime down the line? I'm asking because that's pretty much the only thing that's keeping me away from this device, and I don't mind using the stock software until LOS releases (because it's pretty vanilla anyway).

They said they will allow bootloader unlock one by one and Nokia 8 as a flagship most likely will be the first one.
I would guess they will allow bootloader unlock sometime in the beginning of the next year once they got Oreo out to most models.

Then they've 8.1 to do so I'm not holding my breath. I think Nokia undervalue the developer community unlike 1+ for example.

[RIP] OnePlus 3

Just going to leave this here.
http://www.androidauthority.com/oneplus-3-officially-discontinued-us-europe-729580/
If this is indeed true how long will OnePlus continue to support and develop for a device they no longer sell?
And I really hope this is not true.
They already confirmed that both phones will be on the same schedule regarding updates.
Yup, here's the article:

Time will tell on this one.
It will be very interesting to see what path OP take now, they are sending out very mixed messages about the OP3 and this is not good at all.
I don't care if I cannot buy the phone anymore as long as they support it and develop for it as if it's STILL their flagship phone.
It's OnePlus don't expect any miracles, I love the device but so many draw backs within the company, software etc... makes me look past the pricing and should just stay with Pixel no compromises, OTA + Source on time no bs, My first and last OP device
Well considering the two devices are really similar and i don't think the development on s820/s821 is that different, the support will not die. OP knows OP3 is a successful phone and abandoning it within few months will mean they have lost valuable customers. OP 3T is a ****ty move from them, no doubt, and they have lost me as a customer for sure.

Coming from a developer (you make the no-root CM version, right?) does that mean you don't think community development will continue as is has before?

It will continue but it still needs OP to release the source code in a timely fashion, to update the blobs for the hardware to better support the camera, graphics, cpu and my concerns are despite what they say support will dry up it's just a matter of when.

They are different enough to annoy some very well known dev's such as flar2 who develops elementalx and boeffla who develops kernels also for cm13/14/oos.
If the dev's say they will no longer purchase a oneplus then that's 2 or 3 or even more who will leave for pixel or other devices.
It's the first time for me, a manufacturer is reasoning an upgrade with high demand and getting parts faster to produce more devices... Especially as they were saying that the display was the troublemaker... Not the SoC, not the battery and not the front camera...
Dont think so, the oneplus 3 gets Support the whole Street.
Question is only what the Developers will do, will they leave for the op3t or will they stay. Think they could stay and Release there Kernels for the op3t also. Should be not so much difference or?
Can we cry right now?
Ye only if you don't have op3 yet
Devs here are to good to cry man
i dont see any point to cry. the support of every device ends somewhen, this isnt anything new right?
and as its said that updates for OP3 come along with updates for OP3T, the release of the OP3T basically changed nothing.
you can also say "RIP Phone X" as soon as its released because you know "Phone X 2" will come soon or later and the company will focus more on that new one.
so sorry but the title of this thread "[RIP] OnePlus 3" is nothing more than panicmongering without any base.

Not when the device is replaced after 4 months... Plus they haven't been sticking to their software update timeline still waiting for last months Stable OTA (I guess working on official N) and mostly source code is delayed already which is angering devs that want to work on this device meaning even more delays now they working on the 3T. Really ****ty move by 1+..

If it's so than i never buying op phone ever again
I can't believe the butthurt going on.
I've had android phones for long enough now, including a few Chinese ones too. Buying any phone other than a Nexus/Pixel is a gamble when it comes to updates.
Buy a phone for how it is NOW, as it is now the OP3 works great. It's getting android N too. If they ended it with just android N I'm classing it as a win! Anything after that is a bonus.
And I can't wait for all the crying when they release the OP4 and people are saying "My OP3T is obsolete after only 5 months" and "Am I getting a refund I've been robbed because you released a new phone without telling me".
I've owned phones from HTC, Samsung, Motorola, Huawei, ZTE and more than I can remember.

I was hoping they would do a scheme like apple early upgrade where you pay for it over 11 months then get a new phone on the 12th but hey no dice, shame really as I would never part with that much money for a phone if I had to buy it out right.

Is Oreo update for Unlocked Note 8 Snapdragon Out?

Basically the title! I know the Snapdragon variant for Oreo is out and we can flash via Odin, but as far as I know all those builds get you bloatware and boot animations. I'm wondering if Oreo build is out for the unlocked version, one where you get the pure Samsung firmware without any carrier third parties.

Sad. Thank you
You figure the unlocked phones would be the first ones to get it since there is no extra crap in the ROM, but it's not the case.

It used to be that way, certainly in Europe. I expect that providers in USA have made deal with Sammy to wait with the FW updates for the unbranded/ unlocked until the providers have pushed out their updates, this to lure customers to buy phones and services from the big providers.

Oreo for the Snapdragon is not out yet. Just the Exynos. The Oreo builds for the Snapdragon all come from leaked OTA zips. It has not been officially released so no Oreo ODIN files exist for the N8.

Well I wouldn't say they don't exist at all. There's an xda thread on how to flash N8 to Oreo. Issue is the build is carrier build so you get bloatware and boot animations even on an unlocked phone. But if you meant the unlocked version, then yeah I don't think there's a build out yet.

I would say that. The thread for flashing Oreo involved using ODIN to flash a specific version of NOUGAT. Then, as I stated, you use a leaked OTA zip to update to Oreo.
So no, ODIN files for OREO are NOT available.

This is actually pretty upsetting. I went out of my way, avoiding all the carriers great buy one get one deals, to buy direct from Samsung thinking I was going to get priority updates. I really honestly would have bet money on getting Oreo before the carrier Note 8's did.
Naivety at its best I guess. Meanwhile I've been running Android P on my Pixel 2 XL for almost a month now. My Note 8 will never see Android P, at least not while I own it. Kinda sad.
I wouldn't expect Oreo until near when the Note 9 comes out (in the US)

Yeah, I agree. The sufferings of capitalism and putting money before costumers.
Anyhow, I don't get why S8 and S8+ are getting updates and Note 8 isn't. Like I haven't even heard of carriers actually releasing Note 8 OTA for Oreo yet. On the one hand, I want to be optimistic and think that's because they're implementing newer features in N8 version, or perhaps releasing Oreo 8.1. On the other, I think that's not true and they just wanna piss us off. N8 is the latest Note flagship, they gotta take care of it!

If you took a moment to search the forums before commenting that Samsung is not taking care of note8 users it would be awesome. Just because it's a flagship does not mean it will get updates first.
Note8 series is not the best selling popular Samsung phone. S series is the main bread and butter for Samsung.
Past couple of years I have been following Samsung and it's update cycle, it's always S series first and then N series.
Just have patience and again learn to use the search function sometimes. This discussion has happened multiple times and answer always is if you need immediate updates get Apple/pixel phone. If you can live with decent delayed updates, go for s series.
If you care for good hardware and build but ok update speed (updates will come for sure) note series helps .

I am just making a point that people need to search the forums before posting any comments. Also no one should feel entitled that since its a flagship or they paid big bucks, that the manufacturer should drop everything and cater to their needs. Samsung never promised faster updates than s series. It has always been like that.
None the less everyone is entitled to their opinion. You can read it or choose to ignore it and move on.
Got Oreo (OTA) to my unlocked Note 8 (SM-N950F) yesterday - so at least in Europe it is out and deliveries started.
I could be wrong but.. I think this at 1st was about a PHONE. I guess life is a slap in the face to some.. they express it to all..
I manually put it on my phone. Securty update is March 1st. Never had one problem. Runs great...

I know I know, some people will be ok even samsung releases the OREO next year. Because they never promised right... I wonder what they have promised. OMG...some people just....

is anyone aware of any developers who are on their way to getting this phone

I only ask the above because we have one unofficial ROM and zero modified stock ROMs and nothing to flash in case of emergencies, it's off putting for me to modify anything as I've nothing on my memory to flash should I need it.
Not being needy, just concerned that this flagship isn't getting the treatment it deserves
Well there's reasons for that. Phone just came out not long ago, not released in the US, and in a strange move Huawei have said in two months bootloader unlocking won't officially be supported basically killing development for this phone unfortunately. I wouldn't expect any major developers moving their ROM's to us.

Still find it odd, firstly with every flagship I've had and as you can see from my signature ( if you're viewing this on a pc ) I've had quite a few.
I have never once seen, after over a months release only one non official ROM available for a phone, the Sony z1 and the note 4 being the worst amongst every device I've had, the OnePlus and the HTC sensation being the best with the most.
Secondly there is a huge chance that Huawei will overturn their decision to allow bootloader unlocking, not only that but id have imagined that with today's developers whether or not Huawei allows unlocking, we would still have a hack around it S-Off for HTC devices springs to mind.
The US not being involved is a loss but at the same time, some of the best developers I've had the chance to communicate with here on XDA have been from all over the world, not too many from the US iirc so I'm not buying that.
I'm not bashing here but just a little concerned that not a single ROM had been released, I think it's a terribly sign for such a device to have nothing.
I've even been looking into making my own ROM myself, will know over the next few weeks if I can make that a reality or not, but as it stands I don't even have a starting base and the difference between devices unless debranded is quite stark and would probably end up bricking devices.
Such a shame, I sincerely hope it changes but I'm holding less and less hope as time goes on.
PS: I'm not sure but wasn't treble meant to be able to be used on this device too??
There are plenty of treble based ROMs and most of them should work fine.: https://forum.xda-developers.com/project-treble
Just flash them via TWRP. Otherwise Huawei phones have traditionally never had much independent ROM development.

Oh mate??? You might have just become my hero, I know literally nothing about project treble other than the fact that it may help with ROM flashing, but again have never done it..
Coming from the OnePlus 5 I never needed it.
Have you flashed any treble ROMs on this device ?
If you don't mind can I just ask.
If I flash something, how can I get back to my normal ROM if it becomes unbootable?
Update: @mrabcx
I tried to install a treble ROM, made a nand back up first and it failed to boot, restored nand and it's now back up and running.
I think we need a treble compatible twrp, does it even exist for the p20 pro??
I don't have P20 myself so can't answer that, but the phone is very similar to other Huawei phones such as Mate 10 and should in theory be able to boot Treble ROMs. I guess there could be some issues with clearing cache/wiping data etc. If you can post the details in the Treble ROM sections then I'm sure someone there will be able to help you out.

Yep I was under that impression myself, then I tried every single ROM there is in the treble section, not a single one booted.
Not only that but everyone there is trying to get it working on their phones so no one really cares for anyone else.
Not good.
Tried via fastboot as our twrp doesn't work.
Tried via twrp and the sand issue.

What are the chances of unlocked bootloader and root?

Since HMD / Nokia said that they'd begin offering bootloader unlocks on a selection of their devices, very little has happened, and consequently, very little if any development or popularity on XDA or among other tinkerers or power users has followed.
The 9 is potentially a very attractive device, and I've ordered one on the potential strength of the camera and general value proposition, even if I'd rather the screen weren't so small (6" 18:9 is tiny - given tall aspects' narrowness and poor usability).
I'm hoping they'll do the right thing here, but if they don't, I can't see myself keeping it, and would struggle to recommend it or other Nokia devices to anyone.
I'd like to know this as well. I'm so used to having devices with unlockable bootloader, I was in my feelings when my PureView 9 wasn't unlockable
Anyone who has the phone already, what does it say about the 9 (if anything) when logging into the Nokia bootloader unlock portal?

There's a dev that asked for $30 to help with development of TWRP,i can give you his telegram link in DM and you will see some of his work on other Nokia devices, we just need enough users who are interested to donate since he'll not make it for free, keep in mind that he might still not be able to make one that decrypts data and there for making the whole thing very useless without ability to make nandroid backups of /data

A sad time for the Nokia 5

Don't get me wrong, i still love this phone, but it's just sad it is almost completely ignored by HMD
The potential of giving this device custom roms and mods has pretty much died out now, for them not giving kernel source and not even allowing us to unlock our bootloaders. rooting is also almost impossible unless you want to pay for a bootloader unlock key or stay on Nougat to achieve a temporary unlock.
It's been two years now, and nothing has changed their minds, and no huge progress was made for this device here in xda, there is actually one custom rom under development but i think it's barely usable, and it was never finished, we all know this phone will soon virtually die because of lack of software support after the 2-3 year period. If this keeps up, then there's no point for me in using this phone any longer, cuz i lived my android phones through root and customizations, and I'll get really bored if my phone can't get any of it. i thought HMD was kind enough, but they favor other higher end devices instead
GCam spared some of its worth at least, but it's only a matter of time before this device will be forgotten the way HMD forgot their purpose who broke the trust of a lot of Nokia fans.
The Nokia 6.1 might be my next phone, but after HMD's poor performance of "service" I'm having doubts now of me not ever creating custom roms for this.
If you have any opinions or if i said something wrong feel free to leave a reply below...
I've got a Nokia 6.1 and it is the best phone I've had. I enjoy using it on latest Android one pie with root. 64gb internal storage, 4gb ram :good: , I'm very happy with it
I recommend the stock rom over GSI ROMs but that's my personal preference.
Here is a list of a/b treble gsi's for Nokia 6.1

You need cash. Visit techmesto website.
It's business. HMD wants you to buy a new phone.
On the other hand, it was never popular on XDA. It's on the low-end side that was a little bit more expensive than any other phone with the same specs. There was no reason to buy it in the first place.
