Screen flickering trouble - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

my phone started flickering (2/3 rds from down to up)
it flickers when i lock\unlock the phone
when the light is set to auto and it gets low , to 10 % or so.
i found that the issue is worldwide with at&t phones,
tried :
solution 1 : wipe cache partition. => didn't work
solution 2 : activate developer mode, turn off "disable hardware overlays" => didn't work
solution 3 : turn off : setting\display\auto adjust screen tone => didn't work
then i downloaded : screen filter , allows you to put light at any percentage you want , i tried even 1%, the screen never flickers when i do the percentage manually.
so i guess the problem is software.

I have the same exact same problem..
I thought I was going crazy thinking it was only me..
I have tried screen shooting it when it happens but when I look at the screenshot in gallery it just shows a clean picture. Like nothings happening.
So weird

Same problem here!!! Maybe it's a hardware issue already, maybe a broken display?

its all over the world :/
the only thing i learned so far, never let the phone heat up, or you this might happen.
no solution yet.

mine started doing this after updating to 6.0.1. it gets really bad if the phone gets cold (on low brightness)

Hi. I just wanna share it. I found in this (xda comment post by some one I forget him for awhile looking for him to say thanks very much) fix for my s5 g900f with latest modem and bootloader. I use RR 7.1.2 rom.
The app is "active screen filter". That save my life.

Screen Color

Hi,
I got the Galaxy Note N7000 and installed ICS (StuNNeR 1.4.19)
Now I noticed a weird thing! The screen's color changes (kind of flashing) from normal to a more red-ish then back to normal, it goes on and on and on for few minutes... (about 1 second normal then 1 second red-ish.. etc)
This doesn't happen all the time. It happens more often when the brightness is low (I have brightness set to auto)
Is anyone experiencing the same issue?
Ya I have similar thing think its just the auto brightness kicking in nothing to worry about

Yes. Go to settings display and turn off auto adjust to save power
Thanks guys.
I turned off the auto brightness and kept the screen brightness at a low level, but the problem didn't go. I think the problem has nothing to do with the auto settings, but more to a low brightness.
I'll continue observation.
The thing is I just bout the phone 3 days ago. Should I return the phone and get a new one, or this problem exists in all galaxy notes 7000.

Mohammed

Had the issue on my gt-i9100. I found it to be linked to the browser colour/brightness settings. In browser go to menu> brightness/color>press default and then ok. Worked for me anyway. Some bug makes the browser setting apply to the whole system. On my gt-i9100 anyway.

Sick of samsung's bad displays

So my display after being replaced 2 times in 6 months started flickering. My phone is very hard to be turned on because of the green flickering.
I just want to upgrade to a S6,S7 Edge or non edge. i just want to know if they have the save problem with displays ? I want to have a phone at least 2 years, can you recommand me a phone like that ?
I was just considering switching to a iPhone even though i prefer android on phones ... o how are S6,S7s displays ? Samsung still have the same problems?
Samsung improved a lot on screen quality in S6 and after, so you should be okay

Wow that's amazing. Been using samsung s5 exynos version for the last 1yr. Never had that kind of problem till date. And it have the same display as snapdragon version. And on comparison I found that this is by far the best display out there when compared to other brands.
Maybe perhaps you might be having a faulty unit from the begining.

I have the same problem here with the display and it's not a software problem (same by original os 6 and same by cyanogenmod 14).
After the temperatures are under 10 C. i can't open my s5 with home button i must do it over the power button.
Using S5 for more than 28 months still I have not faced any issue. I just had to buy new charger apart from that not a single problem and yes I mess up with my phone so much but I still working and no display failure yet. And also I have dropped it many times, it still refuses to die.
You are just having a defective model or some internals of the phone are messed up. Because Samsh*t produces one of the best displays..

Its not a good sign. Try disabling your light sensor. Even then if you experience such a problem than it means that your flex cable that attaches the screen with the motherboard needs to be changed.

Hi,
Yes and expect the same problems with the following generations. It's an amoled screen thing. The green colour happen when there's a colour displayed on the screen for a very long time (for example, I have a green on my screen of the size of my keyboard).
I think a solution to this problem is to set the display to turn off after 30s (it saves battery too) and maybe, if you're using a custom keyboard, change the colour from time to time. Use the brightness of the screen to a lowest which would still be comfortable to you (and auto unticked).
This last tip alone is enough to prevent greening. My flickering happened after an incredible fall (it had a tempered glass so the screen was safe). The flickering showed green what it had in memory.
Samsung has a 2-year guarantee for its products so you shouldn't worry for that period of time. Problem not solved, replacement.
Best of luck

The funny thing is i already did "by mistake" all the tips you said and still have this. Never dropped the phone though. This problems seems very big though, i expected a burn in to be the biggest problem, but to have flickering at a level that i cant turn on the phone. I wanted recently to switch to a Nexus 6p, but knowing that it uses Amoled too, its a bad ideea. So the only "solution" is to switch to IPS screens? (btw i want a phone that holds on for at least 3 years)
In my research thus far, the AMOLED screen technology is to blame. When the display circuits get old or damaged, they don't sustain current at low power settings. In LED screens, a back light controls brightness, but AMOLED screens send current to each pixel for brightness control. If the circuit is damaged, or any corrosion has built up inside, this could attenuate the current below the point required to sustain light flow. I see this problem with some LED and CFL lights on motion sensor switches. Just enough current goes through the motion sensor to keep it's circuits active, and that current causes a flicker in the light.
With the screen though, since the problem is only resolved when you increase the brightness just a bit above minimum, it seems anything that lowers the display power (auto brightness for example) will cause it to flicker if this setting gets too low. I also noticed that before the screen locks on timer, it dims to low power for a few seconds and flickers as a result. There are apps that attempt to resolve this by putting a translucent black screen over your desktop and apps. This keeps the power up on the pixels but adds a black overlay, kind of like a screen filter. You can adjust the darkness if you need it to save your eyes when reading in the dark but it doesn't help save power any. They also require a rooted device, which could void warranties. The reason for this I believe is because apps are supposed to operate in a way they don't intrude on each other, and a filter that lays over your screen does in fact alter the output of your display rendering. With the added security concerns of these apps possibly collecting screen shots and sending them to another site, I would avoid this. Best to use a physical screen overlay you can put on or remove as needed as long as it doesn't interfere with your touch screen options.
Ultimately, these devices were meant for replacement every 2 to 3 years so if you're like me and you like to make your investment last, best thing to do is apply any work around you can come up with. A repair shop may be able to wipe the circuit boards down with a solution that clears away corrosion, but it won't repair any weakened pixels. I'm still using a Samsung S5 G900F
- And i finally got this fixed. it sounds like the reason for this is that since the latest update your phone cannot decide whether to use hardware or software back light settings. I managed to make the problem go away by doing this:
Go to settings >> system >> About device.
Find "Build number" and click 6 times fast on it.
You will then get the message saying: "You are now a developer"
and then go back to Settings >> system >> Now you will see the "Developer Options"
Now go to Developer options >> Drawing Section or Rendering Section >> Find "Turn off hardware overlays" or "disable hardware overlays" >> This will force the phone to always use GPU for screen adjustments. no more flickering.
but If I turn the brightness ALL the way down, it still flickers like crazy, however, if that's the only time it'll do it, I consider that a win.

Always on display. Sametimes it's help but it's probably fault of ambient light sensor or screen.
It is the same If aod Off
Not good
That's a common thing with faulty oled screens, it is a hardware issue
I have the same flashing screen when I turn the screen off before the aod is displayed. It does not happen all the time. Turning off aod does not help. I doubt that it is a hardware issue as the flashing started after updating to MIUI 11 - at least for me.
I have also this problem, started a while ago when I was on MIUI 10 after I installed some kind of dark theme
This indeed looks like a AOD fault cause turning it off solves the problem, and the latest version of AOD with custom picture customization, reduced this issue for me
But it also seems like it mostly happens when the ambient light is low so the automatic brightness reduces the screen light and AOD starts to flash
I hope it won't be a hardware problem
One other thing that I want to mention is sometimes it goes really bad and the screen starts flashing for a long time, in this case phone seems to become unresponsive as not touch and not the fingerprint sensor and infrared camera doesn't work at all

It is used for past time if you're asking
So a little update on the flashing screen situation
I disabled auto brightness and set the brightness a little below middle of brightness bar and so far so good. No flashing here for a while
Also disabling the AOD completely solves the problem
Another update on the state of this flashing issue, after Android 10 update haven't seen any flashing so far, AOD display works fine, light sensor and automatic brightness work just fine.
I guess it was a software issue after all
I hope you have solved it. Do you have the anti-flick on?

Nope I don't
Anyone else who has this issue:
Try disabling hardware overlays in developer options, also check to see if the Game driver option within Developer options is set to default. Although its possible that this could be the beginnings of a hardware issue, it could also be a software related issue.
If none of the things that I mentioned work, i would try reflashing the stock fastboot rom. ( must be fastboot version)
Similar happened to me but i think this is not recoverable.

No matter what i do, it only flashes and nothing else is visible. Device purchased about 1.5 years ago.

You need to return to stock using a fastboot rom, using a recovery rom will not work.
Most likely you have corrupted files. but sure it could be an hardware issue, especially if you have dropped the phone or installed something to increase the refresh rate. If you flashed a refresh rate mod, then you need to flash the DBTO image from the fastboot stock rom.

I have TWRP installed and thought of checking it out but it simply flashes there as well. Right now i have the display on, set never sleep in Developer options and simply keeping it up until new phone arrives. Once i am on new phone, i will try factory reset on this first and go from there i think. Not sure how to get to fastboot when display is not working.
Due to such weird nature that nothing really helps i tend to think that this is HW issue.
EDIT : Turned off display by accident (because phone call happened) and now it's back to flashing disco with absolutely nothing working. Fastboot (power + lower volume key together) is of course flashing as well so inacessible.
Happened to me too. Turned off AoD, restarted, turned on and it was ok for a while. Now flashed again. Dont know what is causing this :/
Odesláno z mého MI 8 pomocí Tapatalk
I also got the same issue on my dipper. The only solution that works perfect is by flashing to LineageOS 17.1. I know it's an OLED screen faulty but Lineage really fixes it. Been using Lineage for a few months and never have this display issue again. Other custom ROMs can't fix this display issue.

Samsung Note 9 - Display Discoloration & Overheating

Who else are facing the same problem ?
1)Initially, when I unlock phone by pressing power button the display was changed to dim colour(mostly yellowish) and with horizontal lines displayed when the brightness is below 50%. After tried with multiple times pressing on power button the display came back to normal.
2) Next stage, it's not solved with power button. I have to keep my phone aside for some time to get back to normal display. It's been 15 to 20 min then.
3) Now, I would get normal display only in morning. Else, I need to keep my phone idle without touching for at least 4 to 5 hours. I've also changed screen power off time from 30 Sec to 10 Minutes. So that my screen wont turn off and I can keep the normal display. If I forgot to use or kept aside more than 10 min then my screen would go off and display would gone again and irritation starts with that discoloration problem..
4) If display changes to yellowish to reduce the horizontal lines problem I need to increase the brightness to 80 or 85% but this causing my phone with another problem "heating issue"
Samsung haven't responded on this issue yet, how could we bring up the issue and get the proper resolution from Samsung.
This happened after last March update installation?
What note 9 do you have?
Probably not a hardware fault if it happened after recent software update.
A number of note9 affected although samsung seems to disagree at the moment.
Hello,
I also have a problem with the display after waking up with the POWER button. There are tinted colors distorted and some stripes like dim lines and slow refreshing. Everything started after updating to Android 10. In fact, when the display lights up incorrectly, it starts to heat up from the bottom. Putting the smartphone aside for a moment or cooling down causes the display to work correctly.
Workaround? I turned on Active Display and first knock to activate it, then the display lights up correctly and then I unlock the screen and use normally. It is known that battery consumption increases. Of course mine is Exynos.

Try wiping the cache partition in Recovery Mode. If that doesn't work then back up your device and manually reinstall the OS back onto your device.
Im having the exact problem. I flash LineageOS and it worked by max brightness then back to auto. I installed brightness widget to max brightness and back to auto everytime I turn on screen.
This issue is popular after March update. I tried everythings you mentioned above, reset, flash new firmware, even April update, wipe cached, flash cooked rom, heat screen, turn off features, disable gpu overlay, etc... Samsung Vietnam guaranteed can fix with new screen but I'm out of warranty.
I dont have any issues us unlocked snapdragon xaa model on latest android 10 version.
Can we confirmed that a screen replacement fixes the display problem or is it still a software issue

I'm having the exynos version too but with ITV (Italy) firmware ...never had this problem and now I'm on April's version after March's version.
This looks a little bit like what happened to the S5 years ago when after 1 and a half/ 2 and a half year's the screan began flickering, having green spots or lines, randomly didn't go on with low luminance settings since it completely died....a lot of people said on forum's that it was the screen and a replacement solves, but when it happened to me years ago the Samsung assistance center told me that it was another component (never told me what it was) causing the issue and once they changed it , they solved the problem.
So, after my experience with the S5, don't know what to think now for what is happening to some guys even if I think that this issue might depend with something happening after marchs update because for the too many people having it after the update, coincidences are not credible.

So, after my experience with the S5, don't know what to think now for what is happening to some guys even if I think that this issue might depend with something happening after marchs update because for the too many people having it after the update, coincidences are not credible.

Yes, many people were facing this problem and how many times we have contacted the Samsung they are behaving like they just hearing the issue for the first time. Just created and posted the link in Members app and 67 members joined so far. Everyone having the display problem out of nowhere. All of them on out of warranty except one or two. Still members app floating with the display problem messages.
Display issue got noticed in S20 too but they immediately released the security patch and solved it. Don't know why they were silent on Note 9.
