FireOS nor any of the custom ROMs support this natively. You'd need an app to pull this off which itself would be vulnerable to curcumvention on an unrooted device.

You can download applock or similar apps from play store to lock apps.

If Im sideloading apps does it pay to root device

Hi
Im just trying to find out what rooting the device will buy me...since I sideload apk files anyway...I know with rooting I can eventually get the Google play on the device...I'd like to hear from those that rooted it, what else it brought to the table. Because of all the bricked units and the bootloader being locked...Im a little nervous to do it..especially when I see one user successfully rooted it..only to have the screen come up blank a few days later..any input or feedback would be greatly appreciated....
If you follow all the directions right in rooting your device. Then you should not need to worry. If you have experience then you should be fine. Root gives you access to all system files. The reason people are getting brick is cause they mess with the system files. We do not fully know what all the files are for yet. So you just need to be careful. Root gives access to a completely different launcher keyboards. There are many topics on what you can do.

Just two things for example:
without root you can't use any other launcher except the amazon one
and can't use international keyboards.
Other things like backups, optimizing your device.. are not so critical

Not entirely true. Without root, you are limited to the number of launchers that will work. And with those that DO work, tapping the home soft button brings up the default Amazon UI. But you CAN use a launcher different than Amazon's.
I'm using ADW Launcher EX on a full stock unrooted KFHD. I like the flexibility of having access to both interfaces. I have decided that I won't root it until there is a foolproof way to prevent Amazon from forcing a subsequent update that would undo root.

is there a way to disable or freeze the component responsible for update downloading?
or to disable communication with update server?

I´m done with rooting
I root my KFHD as i get it out of the box; then get an ota update, lost root, root again, another ota, and another root and son on and on...
Since the google play market remains usable after lost the root privileges, i don't intend to root again; i live in mexico so i cant afford to brick my kindle fire.
The only apps screwed after lost the root where google maps and youtube; i got them in system/apps and disappear after the update, side loaded they dont log in, they need the google login service apk found in this forum, and after a reboot the login fine.
I dont care for backgrounds, widgets or alternate launchers; i just need to launch my games and apps on the superb screen of my KFHD and the amazon launcher does just that.
until someone breaks the bootloader...

[Q] Unable to Launch Music & Videos

I recently rooted my new Kindle Fire HD 8.9 purchased a few weeks ago using Bin4ry Tool. The root worked fine. I was able to load up Google Play and install apps.
I am now having a problem where I cannot access "Music" or "Videos" from the main Kindle Dashboard. It simply states "Unable to launch video." or "Unable to launch music.". Is this a known issue or are there any additional steps I need to take to restore this functionality? During the root I had to wipe the device and I have purchased music and movies that I would like to restore from the cloud if possible.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Matthew

Next Launcher 3d

Can someone pls write a noob guide on how to install on KFHD 7? I've followed similar instructions to GO Launcher with Next but it doesn't seem to work. I'm not even sure if it's possible. thx!

You might need to assign it system status, which requires root. Some apps can't seem to run on the KFHD7 on Amazon's custom Android, but after rooting, and giving apps system permissions, they work.
You will need to purchase Next launcher. Then the best thing to do is install Kinology. Then the Next launcher will work flawlessly.
This is a Kinology HD using XDA Premium
Did the system thing and it didn't work. Gonna skip next launcher but thx guys.

I've simply downloaded it from play store and used it flawlessly on CM10, PA, and Kinology. I just install it as a regular apk, no making it a system app or anything. The only thing I did was go to app manager and delete data from Trebuchet. Worked every time (actually using it right now)

Does anyone no how to get all launchers working without putting them in system apps. I have a rooted kindle fire hd and after putting next gen launcher in system apps it put me in a boot loop. Don't want to risk that again. Do you know how to get all launchers working without putting them in system app folder. Kindle Fire HD 7 running 7.3.1 forked version ICS 4.0.3

Before kinology or CM or anything else, we were stuck at the point that you're at now, the ONLY option was to put a launcher into system app. Without loading a custom ROM, it simply isn't possible.

[Q] Unable To Install Apps Via Google Play Store

Hi all,
I've rooted my Kindle Fire 7" HD but I'm unable to install any apps via the Google Play Store. SuperSU has been install successfully & I've also upgraded it to v1.3. Root Checker Basic confirms that I do indeed have root permissions. I followed the tutorials posted by @prokennexusa & the app loads up fine. But when I attempt to install anything, the Play store closes. When I attempt to reopen it, it will close straight away. I have to clear the app's data before I can load it up again.
I had done this previously on a different Kindle & all was fine so it's probably me missing a step. Anyone got any ideas on what that missing step might have been? I'm running v4.1.10 of the Play Store. Is this the latest?
Cheers for any tips you can give me,
Lee
Make sure you're using the right GAPPS for your OS. I recommend flashing Kinology ROM, as it includes GAPPS and SuperSU. It's just stock with extra features, so it works really well.

[Q] Rooting my Nook HD Plus

I often get a message on Google Play Store "your device isn't compatible with this version". If I root my Nook HD + will I be able to install those apps? Any help with his question would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

After I rooted my nook hd+ I was able to install a lot of the apps that I could not before. There were still some that I couldn't but the majority of them I was able too.

Thanks for the reply. I did root my Nook HD + but still get the same reply "not compatible" the apps I want are Bank of America and Wells Fargo. It's looking like I'll have to do without.
On another note, I also tried CyanogenMod 10.1 at one point and those apps did install but I found CyanogenMod 10.1 to be to unstable and went back to stock. Guess I will have to stay with plain old Nook HD + Stock.
You can try sideloading the apps that works in a lot of cases where the app says it is not compatible.

I don't know how others do it but what I do is download the app I want to my phone and then use Titanium backup to make a copy. Then depending on size I either email it to myself or transfer it to a PC and then to the Nook.

I GOT IT! Thanks for the info...
I used a slightly different method, I downloaded "APK Fetcher" from google play to my non rooted android phone. It copied the apps that I had wanted and that were already installed on my phone. It placed them on my phones SD card and then I transferred them to my pc. I transferred them to my rooted/with extras Nook HD Plus. Then simply installed them. They work perfectly!
Thanks for everyone's help and many thanks to XDA.

I am able to download some apps that were not compatible previously by sideloading them. This is my first post, you can find instructions for sideloading in numerous threads that have way more expierence than I do.
