Unlocking my phone - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Here lately sometimes when I unlock my phone with the fingerprint scanner my phone opens up to the camera or the clock?

I'm having the same issue. I'd assume it's a bug introduced with the latest security update.

It doesn't happen every time but at least 2 to 3 times a day.

List of bugs on Note 3

I love this device but it has a couple of issues. I thought it would be helpful to list bugs in this first release of the software. I'm not rooted. These are mine:
Haptic feedback on menu keys sometimes stops
Air Command has stopped working. Its intermittent.
Sound controls sometimes don't allow me to make changes (right now I can't change notification sound level)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using xda app-developers app
I myself have not encountered the haptic-feedback, air-command, or sound-control problems.
The one problem I've found is that Google Hangouts won't do video calls via LTE. It pops up a message saying a WiFi connection is required instead. (The Note 2 used to have the same problem on ATT, but it was fixed about a month ago.)
Another annoying bug is that AVRCP 1.3 does not seem to be implemented properly.
Song/Media metadata does not get properly sent via bluetooth to receiving devices. This has been seen as not working at all to song information getting stuck on display and not changing when tracks change.
I'm definitely looking forward to a big fix for this one.
This has been seen on ATT, Tmobile, and Sprint variants.

You have to edit some code to allow video call on LTE. changing a 0 to a 1. Google to learn how. Can be fixed

But the workaround requires rooting, doesn't it? (For me, the disadvantages of rooting at this point outweigh the benefit of Hangouts via LTE.)

Whats the disadvantages to rooting?
The only bug that I have noticed is sometimes when I get an email notification from the stock email app, it appears in the status bar and then disappears within a couple of seconds. I've seen this a couple of times.
I guess we have to expect some issues since this is the first device out of the box with 4.3.
I really wish they would allow the widgets on the lock screen while having a pin for security. At least read only.

Some of the disadvantages are:
* If I screw it up, I could brick the phone, or at least make the phone unavailable while I have to spend a lot of time fixing it.
* Rooting will wipe my existing setup, requiring more time than I want to spend to re-initialize my phone.
* There may be security, stability, or performance problems that have not been discovered yet.
* If my phone exhibits any subsequent problems, even if they're not actually due to rooting, I won't have any easy way of knowing whether that's the case.
* I don't know whether rooting may interfere with subsequent OTA updates (unless I go to the trouble of flashing back to stock first).
* No one can rule out the possibility that rooting will void the phone's warranty.
screen and sound
has anyone noticed occasional brightness flickering? I thought it might be adaptive display or something like that, and i disabled it all, but I still see it.
also, I'm not sure what in the world happened, but my phone started randomly playing music. the music player didn't open, I had air gestures, off, and it wasn't ringing. I turned off wifi and the music stopped. In fact, i don't even think I have the song that was playing saved to my phone.

Rooting any device voids warranty. It does not trip the flash counter or Knox. Just flash back to stock or supersu unroot.
As for the other stuff, no issues here. Phone is as stable as it was on stock. Runs even better because debloated it myself.

Using Google Music over headphone aux cable, setup eq the way you want, listen for a sec and slide the track knob to another part of the song. The eq turns off. If you go in to the eq settings, it is showing on. Toggle off and on and you will hear the difference.

I don't have any of the bugs being list here. However, when I have S Voice on for wake up when the screen is off, it will sometimes turn on randomly even when nothing is said. Happened in a movie theater for me and it was embarrasing. That feature is now off.

Anyone else having problems using whatsapp with pen window?
It seems that when I minimise it from a conversation I then can't open it again or move the icon around on the screen.
Works normally if I press back to the conversation window first though
S voice gets weird with me too. Had it in hands free mode and it kept telling me something about my safety while it simultaneously read my text out loud. it kept getting stuck in that loop for any new messages.

Screen brightness and
Screen brightness issue: occasionally, when brightness is set low (not auto), when phone is turned on, screen turns on at full brightness for a split second then go to low setting level. Happens about 25% times.
Haptic feed back when screen off: after I turn screen off, if I move phone, I get a haptic feed back once. Doesn't repeat until I turn screen on and off again.
Edit: this is caused by 'smart alert'. Under Controls -> Motions. It vibrates when you pick up the phone and you have a notification and the screen is off to let you know there is something you missed.

ZTE Axon Proximity Sensor bug

Hi guys
Just bought Axon and first thing I found is that proximity sensor doesn't do its work well at least on my phone. When I am on call holding my phone by ear the screen is till on unless I turned it on pushing power button. Does anybody has the same issue, is this a software bug which can be fixed with future updated?
My device was working great but recently developed this bug. I noticed it after my last playstore update to 6.0.0. Device also doesn't seem to sleep anymore so my battery life fell off a cliff. Going to try a factory reset.

My bug has gone but light sensor is not working well in most cases I have to adjust it manually. I got the same version of Google play as you do. To maintain proper battery life try to install cm cleaner or something similar.
Thanks for the battery saving tip will check it out. Unfortunately for me factory reset changed nothing annoying as hell having to manually turn off the screen for all calls.

Random Reboots

Anyone else suffering random reboots? I have got my Note 8 N950F for a few days now and sadly have to notice that I see random reboots from time to time. Sometimes I saw the Samsung boot logo, sometimes i noticed it because I hat to enter my PIN after reboot. For now it seems to happen once or twice a day. Quite annoying.

Rogue app?
Sounds like something installed is not agreeing with your device. Usually thins can get tangled up when you do a restore from an old back up for example.
Did you have an older model note device that you restored form perhaps?
I'm using a T-Mobile variant ands no such issues.
As an aside, there is an option in the phone (you may already know this) that will restart the phone at a setting you setup.
Maybe also try clearing cache on your device?
Did you disable a lot of stuff with a package disabler?
A couple of mornings now I've woken and my phone asks for a password because it restarted overnight. I haven't experienced a crash or reboot yet, but something seems to be happening overnight.

Do you have Substratum installed? I installed Swift Dark and noticed what I call mini reboot, phone would lock up for a second and just the carrier label came on and everything was fine again. Was using the S8 for my Substratum setting and I guess the Note 8 isn't compatible yet. Uninstalled most of the layers and haven't had a reboot since.

Ive seen people that posted having random reboots being that they transferred a backup to the new device.
There's something to be said in a fresh manual install into a new machine with new guts and firmware/builds....
My Note 8 just randomly rebooted itself this morning for the first time. I have had my phone since September 7th. After the reboot it has been fine but shortly before it rebooted it quit functioning altogether. I think I will go in and clear the cache when I get to work.

Its a system wide ad-blocking app that does not require root
My note 8 n950u1 has rebooted multiple times, but not in one day. It has restarted for the third time (ever) this morning. The first time was Gmail, second was Facebook, and this third time was Gmail again. My best guess is it might be a ram glitch because it seemed to happen when the app was trying to do a lot. Now, I have no idea if this is true, but it is my best guess. At first I thought it might be because of the snapdragon but seeing how others on an f varient with the exynos chips are rebooting too, that theory is shut down.
Could be apps like others pointed out. 2nd option the battery? But due to how new this phone is, I doubt that. In my past phones it was old bad batteries.
Not a single random reboot since day one, I got my note 8 on 22 Nov 2017, I dont use substratum or adhell, but I installed bk disabler and blocked all bixby, microsoft, google music, video, books, all carrier trash, almost all samsung stuff in "bloatware section", also disabled many services in a lot of apps, I am running naptime, greenify and hibernator, so far, all working fine
SM-N950F here same problem.
Mine ended up random rebooting four times from Sept 7 through about Feb 1. Then about two weeks ago, it completely froze, then decided the port was wet and wouldnt charge at all (port wasn't wet). tried a few things, then did a factory reset, where it actually rebooted probably 20-22 times (well, during the reboot process, the black screen with Samsung flashed probably 20 times).
Needless to say, I talked with Samsung and then TMobile. Got a replacement and it's been great since.
Can't believe it's now been over 5 months since I first got my Note 8. Even counting the replacement, I still LOVE this phone.

Thanks for the update, please keep us up to date even if you continue to have no problems under Oreo. BTW, I have the exact same problem (using N9500 dual SIM with Samsung processor as opposed to Qualcomm) as you but do not have Oreo available yet. I'm getting the restart message every few days and its always after the phone has been idle, usually overnight. Its asking for a PIN due to restart as I use face recognition. Also I transferred over data from a Note 3. Want to ask you, did you try to wipe the phone completely as a solution to the restart problem (before Oreo became available)?
Thanks so much in advance!
I am still waiting for oreo OTA, but after almost 5 months, I have not had a single random reboot or freezing, even though I have a bunch of stuff disabled

Lag When I Unlock The Phone

Hello after i updated my phone to oreo it lags sometimes. I assume that it is kind of a Glance problem cause when i turn off glance there is no lag at all(pretty strange i know). I contacted support about this 2 times and they said restart the phone and clear the chace of the app that causes the issue. Neither of them work. Does anyone else facing this issue?

The only lag I have is with the fingerprint senzor. If I doubletap the screen and then I press the fingerprint, it unlocks instantly. If I press the fingerprint with the screen off, it takes a while before the screens turns on (~1.5sec). Maybe this is how it is on the Nokia 8, but on the HTC 10 was lightning fast.

Had a 10 as well as don't really notice that much difference. What I will say is that battery performance trounces the 10 so I'd imagine it's pulling the Nokia from deep sleep that causes the minor lag.
always restart wherever it lags. it lags with the amount of oreo update.
Did you tryed a factory reset? I did it and it is more responsive then before. But safe needed data first. Backup before factory reset!

I think it is so the phone isnt getting false attempts to unlock it, only my opinion though, i am not saying that is deffo the reason.
I just have the same problems with my Nokia 8 since 2 days.
Fingerprint or power-button unlock is sometimes painfully slow. Maybe up to 5 seconds.
I have the Android 8.1 Oreo update installed since some months already and also the newest security patch.
I have read, it's a general problem of the 8.1 version, that unlocking gets slowed down.
Anyone has a solution so far? Factory reset doesn't seem to help always (I didnt try), but maybe downgrading to Android 8?
nokia 8 unlock delay fixed

No, this didn't work for me at all.
I think it's related to deep sleep / doze feature. Try to restore factory settings and wipe clean data + cache of the phone and see if it will help. There's so many things that can cause this that we're not able to help any of you.

Thanks, I know, but that also didn't help me. Currently I am following this bug report at Google:
https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/109710373
It seems to be an issue witht he June Android Security Patch... a lot of Pixels are having the same problem.
I don't thinks it's the June 2018 update problem. If u look at the dates on this thread, the problem started after the oreo 8.0 update back in November 2017. Hopefully it'll be fixed in the android 9 update coming soon. I updated straight to 8.1 after unboxing so I don't know if this problem was around during nougat

Stop Auto Updates on Oreo (AT&T)

I have an SM-N960U on AT&T that came with Oreo. I have instituted network-wide blocking of the update servers but when I leave my house (and forget to turn on my VPN), the phone is fair game and it downloads the update over the air. If I leave the phone alone for any length of time, regardless of battery level it will update. I have asked AT&T multiple times to flag my line as non-update or set it as BYOD because I think that "might" stop the updates (not their phone, why would they update it?) but nothing works. I have disabled auto-updates in Developer mode and that does nothing either.
The phone has updated about 4 times now and every time I downgrade back to Oreo which is starting to get annoying (hey at least it encourages backups of the data on the phone when I copy all my documents off). I am wondering if anyone knows any way to block the updates from being downloaded to the phone. Maybe a way to modify the hosts file in the phone? Who knows, I am grasping at straws at this point.
Thanks
Install Package Disabler and disable updates. My question is where did you get a Note 9 still on Oreo? I would like to find one.

Downloaded it, hopefully it works thank you so much! Also, I have had this phone since the Note 9 came out and every time it tried to update to Pie I would downgrade again. I have read though if it updates to 10, you can no longer go back to 8.

I opted to stay on Pie because I am very happy with my device's performance on it. I'm on T-mobile and when the alert came for the upgrade to A10 I froze it in the queue, thus preventing the download.
I disabled both of those (and a host of other things) and the update icon not only disappeared from the status bar, its gone from the options too so I would say its working. Thank you again for the tip!
I chose to stay on Oreo because I don't like One UI. It changed too much for me and when I got the update the phone was almost two years old. I didn't feel that a phone this old (I say that because new phones seem to get released every 6-12 months) should have such a massive UI upgrade. JM2C.
