What are the things to consider before buying Note 8 ? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hey guys,
According to you users what are the think i should look for ? Particular model ,data storage , color etc ? Will buy one this week so hoping someone could siggest me on this ? Also i need root, that would be the first thing i would do .anything on tempered glasses or case?

1. Do I want a great phone?
2. Can I afford it?
3. Can I read reviews?
If the answer to 3 is yes and you still want to get it ... go for it!

Well, I already mentioned that i was buying it this week but i want to know which version, color, storage etc to go for? If you read my question again perhaps you will understand it better. Thnx

Oh ... I'm so sorry! Buy whatever you want based on your needs and desires and what you have read! I've got the 256Gb dual SIM from China and it's brilliant, does all I ask. I won't root as I don't think it warrants rooting as everything is so improved and Oreo will probably improve things even more!

Case: I'm using the Samsung Clearview Stand case (blue), no screen protector and I'm very satisfied. I do take care of my phone I.e. I don't put it in pockets with keys, throw it on tables, etc and I feel that I have sufficient protection.

1. You want the N950F or FD model (exynos) if you like root/custom ROMs
2. Data storage doesn't really matter 32GB is enough, you can always put a large SD card in later if needed.
3. IMO black is best but I have a Gold note 8 and looks great also
You can always skin your device or slap a case ok to change colours

What did you have before the Z1

Just wondered
Me....I came from the HTC One....and being honest, thinking about going to it, I do like the "1" but there's something pulling me back to HTC but don't know what
I think the reasons can be many. Whit any HTC you can do whatever you want, from flashing 100 roms and mods and updates. This is more restricted on Sony devices. Then or you are a huge fan of Sony Xperia, if not, you have many reason already to go back to HTC.
True....i know bugger all about flashing roms ect....if it works, i leave it
What did notice on the Z1 though, i see now what a few reviews i watched said the screen on the One was a bit better, imo their right, it's hard to explain but the screen the Z1's kind of to sharp (for want of a better word). Again, i went to the settings but i think it's the diffirence between Sony's Tri (whatever the hell it's called) screen, and HTC's (whatever they call thiers)....it actually hurt my eyes watching it (Z1 that is). The only othe thing i don't like about the Z1 (everything else i liked ), when texing, on the HTC you can change the background colour (i've got it set on black with blue tex...easier on my eyes), the 1's just white. But apart from these 2 things, it's a bloody good phone and i'm still hard VERY hard pushed as to which one to keep and sell
See sig.
This is my first and last Sony, HTC all the way, honestly should have kept my HTC One and waited for a newer and better phone, which is literally around the corner, the M8 will be out soon and i'll have shot myself in the foot again.
I won't allow myself to do this to myself again.

I have the best story, I switched from xperia X10i and it was okay, it got slower in time, but it was good for that time 2.5 years ago, but Z1 is the best now

Ditched Samsung and decided to try Sony (Previously Note 1 & Note 2 owner), no regrets whatsoever. Love it. I dont depend on custom ROMs anymore...Exposed Framework. That's all what I need to fully customize my device.
Came from the Arc S... was going to get the Xperia Z then i read about the Z1 so i waited and then took the plunge.... No regrets.. this phone has been a champ!

Yeah I am excited to ditch Samsung too, as I hear the sony ui is already/nearly perfect, and don't need custom roms to make it way better. Going to come from a note 1 also.
Came from S3. Wanted a phone with premium feel Added to it modding the S4 is getting to be really difficult due to KNOX security. This is my first Sony, and I am quite happy - just that I do have camera issue still running around which I believe the Service guys should be addressing effectively.
Came from the Evo LTE and man is it a whole different world.

I've been a Sony owner since 2006. Before the Z1 I had the SP. Good phone but Sony won't update it because its busy with the Z series, so I sold the SP and bought the Z1

Dont get me wrong m8, the phone has a lot going for it and a lot to like but it's far from perfect (I suppose a lot of phones are) also the flashing process and the issues I had with it initially really put me off, not to mention that the touchscreen has a crazy issue where u lose contact with it and it appears intermittent too, unless youre holding the metal frame.
With previous handsets I used to be able to flash a new rom from the pub, no pc needed nothing, just me an the internet, can't do that no more. Plus the phones a little chunky for it's own good, no doubt that Sony will fix that in future releases (smaller bezel)
Maybe it's just me being picky? Or that I came from such a good phone in the HTC One, it's quite a hard phone to top really.
Either way, 2 years is an epic amount of time to think about things that niggle you.
Should have got a note 3 or waited on the One + M8

Various Symbian phones, then SGS2, then SGS3. Flashing was infinitely easier on the Samsung side (no locked bootloader to begin with, default recovery, simple installation of CWM, then we had Mobile Odin...). I'm still somewhat uneasy about the constant need to use a computer on the Z1. On the other hand, on Samsung you had to get rid of Samsung if you wanted to have a decent experience, and the Exynos chipset made everything harder to develop. On the Z1 I still see no need to go AOSP: Sony's ROM is quite light, and Xposed allows for the necessary modding. Besides, there's no "brickbug" or "sudden death syndrome" here, which is a definite plus.
Since HTC is simply nonexistent here in Brazil, my options when my SGS3 started to get those damned freezes from the brickbug were either to stay with Samsung, come to the Z1 or move to the LG G2. Staying with Samsung was something I considered for about five seconds. Between the G2 and the Z1, the microsd slot was a dealbreaker on the G2. The fact that the Z1 is much better built, is water resistant, has a much better camera, and can be modded more easily also helped the decision. Really, I haven't been happier with a phone since the first months with the SGS2.
I'm surprised there's a few giving the HTC One the thumbs up, I thought it'd have been the opposite, especially here..... having said that....I'm replying via my "one" ....says enough about me too I suppose

If the price is identical you should opt for the 910S variant, since that will exhibit zero glitches. I own the 910C variant and almost all of the apps work flawlessly except for a few graphics issues (which you easily fix by going into menu then returning, so its not a processor thing but rather a bug in their software). But straight out of the box the 910S is probably the better option for you.

Thanks for ur reply my friend
The price difference is about 30$ which isn't that big.....,but I saw benchmark tests and the exynos kicked Snapdragon's butt almost in every test (the snapdragon was superior in graphics tests though)
The important question now is where do u live my friend??!! Because I heard about regional lock and I'm afraid that neither one of them will work here in Egypt (due to the lock)

Gear VR has no such locks in place (though they probably will start adding them once the pay store arrives). Nk4 firmware and up and it should support gear.
If you're referring to cell phone operator lock, thats a different thing, depends on what you purchase and where (here its illegal to operator-lock phones). You should consult with your carrier if its compatible.

Quick browse through some sites shows that egypt is selling 910c, so that should be good to go. 910s probably warrants a chat with some tech support guys on your carrier.

Interesting. I would figure that the cleoag patch also "solves" this little issue since I did not experience any region locking at all on 910C. As I said before, exynos works - coldplay and matterport are nonworking, everything else runs smoothly.

I will get 910C variant and order the Gear VR....
To be honest I would wait with VR for something with higher resolution. I've just received Gear VR and the resolution is really bad, pixels are clearily visible. Apart from that it's a great toy.
Rumour says that Note 9 and Gear VR 5 MAX Space Edition will do miracles. You could wait if you have enough patience. Rest of us enjoying current latest and greatest.

The problem is for me it is not enjoyment, which is why I think it's best to try it first before buying (unless the price is nothing for you). It is painful for me to use because of the screen effect. No disrespect meant, just my opinion.

Screen effect may not be the problem... at least wasn't for me. Thanks to advice found here, my experience improved dramatically after 1. replacing the cushion that it came with, with one in box and 2. Paying closer attention to how gear sat in my head (should be at slight angle). Once I found sweet spot, it made world of difference.
Even with 4k display you probably would see pixels. Magnification is so great that in current technology is no way to eliminate screen door effect. Once you find that sweet spot experience is pure enjoyment.

Potential future user with some questions (coming from an iPhone!)

Hi everyone,
seeing the prices of the new XS Max here in France and wanting a bigger screen than the iphone X I currently have, I am considering the Note.
Even if I have tended to own mostly iphones, I regularly buy Android phones (every 2-3 years I would say) to see how they evolve. The last one was an S7 Edge whose screen found its demise during my holidays as it rebounded on my bed onto the iPad that was unfortunately waiting here...and it broke the screen.
Hence, 1st question, is it as fragile as the S7 edge? In any case, I have already found 1 case (there does not seem to be a lot of choice, right) and a glass protector :
I Cannot yet post links but the references are: Spigen 599CS24569 silicone for the case and GEEMEE glass protector for the screen protection
What do u think ? I am looking for a case that is rather slim but can still protect in case of a fall.
Other questions :
1. Are you happy with the S9 so far ? Is it fluid ?
2. How is the eye scan ? I saw a review saying that it was not very responsive.
3. Do you use the S pen a lot ? It seems to be doing quite a lot of things in theory but I am under the impression that in practice few people actually use it.
4. Another question which is more related to the OS : is it still possible to really customize the icons/screen and the home and lock screens without rooting ?
5. Why did you choose to buy the Note 9, compared to say, waiting for the new Pixel 3, which will probably be more innovative ?
6. Is there a kind of clipboard where when you select and copy text it is saved in this clipboard (such as Copied on iOS)
7. I have found less expensive versions of the phone on Rakuten. However, it is said to be an international version with the reference SM-N960FZKDXEF. Are there some differences, for instance in terms networks ?
Finally, would you recommend the Note 9 ?
thanks a lot !

1. I am happy with the Note 9,possibly the best phone i have ever bought and i have used over 24 phones in the last 11 years but it does have its flaws like poor battery if you're not tweaking it to a brick.
2. Supposedly works well for me unless outdoors, else there is a smart scan function to improve the scanning even with glasses on. Believe this existed on the S9/8
3. Ive always used it to illustrate ideas to people, though its not as useful in large groups but that pen's ability to snap pictures like a remote is awesome
4. Yes with the inbuilt theme engine which is almost liken to xiaomi's or i dare say nova.
5. In asia, pixel 3 would be much more expensive. What do you mean by more innovative when the note 9 comes with all these features. Apart from the speedy updates and vanilla android, i think the masses dont really bother much with the overall UX of samsung
6. Yes
7. Best to check the network bands, im sure someone can reply to that. The only big difference is Snapdragon 845 versus Exynos 9810. There is a healthy debate on which is better but my experience with both chips is that the battery on 845 tend to hold better.
Conclusion, this phone is a beast, im overall happy but if you're using the exynos version, prepare to have a powerbank or a charger. I previously used a Mix 2s and a Mate 10, both of which, imho, lasted longer than the note 9 battery wise but that screen and sheer size will keep you glued to the screen not to mention the amazing speakers. Also anything with glass will crack if not careful, the said case and tempered glass would suffice if it was not thrown with force and will protect from bumps and dinks. Goodluck with your decision. Get the snapdragon if you can and satisfaction guaranteed
The Pixel 3 being more innovative than the Note9... Now THAT was funny!
???
Best phone ever.

Yes, I would recommend the Note 9.
PS. The first thing Pixel users do (former user here) is head straight to the Play Store and install a crapload of apps so they can have just some of the features of the Samsung Phones, or wait for someone to come up with a ROM with a bunch of features in it. I'm a Google guy, Chromebooks, etc, but if I'm being honest, Pixels are one of the least innovative devices on the market right out of the box. 3rd party apps/ROM's bring them up to speed. The iris scanner works great, the fingerprint reader is lightening fast and flawless. If you have managed to not smash the iPhone X, which has the durability of a potato chip, the Note 9 would probably be plenty stout. You have a feeling that people don't use the S-Pen? Those people are using the S9 or S9+. I use the S-pen every single day. You can customize icons and screens etc without rooting, yes. I don't use iOS so I have no idea what it's clipboard is like. I can have 20? messages in my clipboard at one time and a simple click of the clipboard icon on the keyboard brings all of my clips up for selection.

I'm not a gamer either, but bought the Razer 2 because it was on sale for $400. I've had the phone for a few weeks, and I'm loving it.
For this price, I don't think you can find similar specs currently.
You'll see a lot of negative reviews of the camera, which are mostly true, but there is an excellent Google Camera port on here, which has made a massive difference.
The display is beautiful.
Sound is great.
Processor and Ram are overkill for a non-gamer, but at this price, hard to pass up.
Just a great device overall, and I'm coming from a Pixel 2xl.
Also, I promise I don't work for Razer. Haha.
Yeah, I got one for £240 and upgraded from an S8, it's great. You can turn off the 120Hz to save battery (it's actually 90Hz by default) but I love the smoothness.
Biggest con for me was the lack of LDAC, but rooting fixes that up.

how so?
As a non gamer, 120hz is easily my favorite part of the phone. In fact, I tried going back to 60hz as a one day experiment, but it makes everything feel sluggish in comparison.
Its a steal at $400. Since other high refresh phones have terrible flicker, there's not another phone I'd rather have at any price atm.
Cons are LCD instead of OLED (though its still a very good Sharp LCD), and a questionable future as far as Android updates go.

Yes.
Treble compatible.
I recommend havoc 2.9
Latest security updates.
Android 10 beta builds work as well.
Best phone with an SD card slot with all the bells, whistles, factory unlocked with all bands for all gsm carriers, works with Verizon too.
For under 300$ us, best phone imo
If you flash the custom kernel.

Google camera port working flawless.
Logo+ working as well, So the back logo light functions with more options.
Thank you so much for the kernel/twrp. Makes this the best under 300$ unlocked usa phone with an SD slot currently available imo.
Depending on your carrier you may need to *#*#4636#*#*
And select phone information>set preferred network type.

Generic system image. Its similar to flashing any ROM, except its just the system image partition.
I got one off amazon used earlier this month for under 300$ used.
Arrived in mint condition, with all accessories, still boxed up, looked like it was never touched.
Thanks for the info.

Now is there a way to return to stock if needed? Like a full system restore. I bought mine because it was on sale for $399 but I have to decide between the Razer 2 or my Galaxy S10e. I can't keep both. Recently I went back to using my oneplus 6t which I had as a spare phone. Such a tough decision now. My biggest concern with the Razer Phone 2 was that it wouldn't get any updayes and since it is still on February security patch I panicked lol.

Not a problem on the info, its Much easier than porting or creating ROMs
And yes very easy to go back to stock. With the gsi images you'll be up to date more so ( and many options for gsi, than the s10e, more freedom, and unless you have an s10e enyos I don't see the being any major development for a long time, if any.

What are your impressions

So those of you who bought it, what are your impressions? Is there anything you don't like about the phone?
Hi, I have the 128GB Tencent version since almost a month.
So far can't be happier with it; great screen, audio, performance, design, software and battery life. They really improved on the OG ROG phone in every aspect.
Google services and all my apps work flawlessly, and although I'm not an avid photographer, the cameras seem decent.
Extra bonus points for a headphone jack and the LED lights (both the small front one and the rear flashy one).
128 GB seems more than enough for my needs and thus far the Chinese ROM hasn't been bothering me at all, after some small tweaks.
In summary, the best phone I've had until now (and I pretty much owned every worthwhile Android flagship every year)
Only issue I have is that the accessories aren't available yet. Other than that, best phone I've ever owned in terms of everything. 128gb version here as well and I just have a portable micros reader I plug into the bottom port for serious emulating.

How about portability(weight, size), jeans pockets fit while sitting, and one handed mode?

It is quite heavy, and not too svelte, but I come from a Huawei Mate 20X which is a lot larger and more cumbersome.
The ergonomics and size are fine, but the weight is noticeable in pockets.

I bought it from the Liaow online shop. Not the cheapest source, but quick and reliable. And they're usually one of the first having stock of just launched Asian smartphones.
How is the brightness in sunlight?
I own the 512gb 12gb CN Version. Quality of the phone feels nice. I like the weight and how it feels in two hands and in one hand via gaming. My only complaint is the brightness. Wish it was a bit brighter.
Just waiting on the twinview dock II then I'm set.

Because of this question I went out to my driveway and decided to test it out myself. This is probably one of the better screens I've seen in direct sunlight. The one thing that's probably making a difference is the fact that I have the dark theme on the phone and it makes it a whole hell of a lot easier to be able to view the screen while I'm typing or doing whatever in my driveway. Full sun, 82 degrees, and I can read this screen perfectly fine without an issue... Sans the fact that I need bifocals in my old ass is not able to read this small ass text as much as he used to be. In short, this is probably one of the best screens I've seen dealing with the ability to display text in direct sunlight.

My first impressions are that I really like the weight, the touch response, speed of everything, and holy crap! The audio is amazing coming from the phone without headphones. I genuinely hope that the modding community does get around this phone. if not, I'll have to get rid of it and get the actual international version so I can get some additional or better band coverage, but for I live in Ohio so far bands 2 and 4 have not been an issue and I think that I saw 1900 show up, but that was just for a moment before one of the other bands picked up. This battery is amazing. there's some tweaks you can make to it within the system settings to allow it to last longer and it provides you some estimated times until it is about to die oh, so that's really nice. I don't want to reach you my cabbage since I already posted some comments in the USA Buyer thread, but feel free to ask me any questions about it if you don't own the phone if you want to know some information about it or off of it.

Best phone review ever!
How is camera quality? How is the 2x zoom without a dedicated telephoto camera?
Any impressions on usage on North American bands? T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, ATT? My contract on Verizon ends tomorrow lol.

Not sure what will show in the images. I went outside, found a flowering plants. 16:9, HDR Enhanced.
...185624=1x
...185715=2x
...155814=5x
...185844=8x
Sorry for the blur. Did my best to set still.
They're set at default resolution... 4k x 2250 I think. Like 4MB each. HDR Enhanced required a little more time for exposure. If you think additional pics or a vid or two would help, lemme know. I'll see what I can do

I left VZW with the intent of getting and using this phone on TMO. If u do this, get to Costco and save youself the $25 SIM crap. They don't charge anything when you switch.
If there's a real world test you want, lemme know and I'll see what I can do.
I'd call you if you want so that you can hear the phone quality yourself. PM me if that's the case.

My mate 20x has way way better camera
Even oppo realme x has way better camera than rog 2
Rest is amazing
I recently bought rog phone 2 from flipkart in India. My device is working fine. But i noticed there is one problem with the phone and it had happened many times that it automatically reset its network.
Like it automatically turns off wifi ,both sim signal for 10 sec and turn it back on again. This happens once or twice in a day at any period of time.
Sometimes network goes blank and i need to restart the device.
Please help me out if anyone finds the solution. Or people having the same problem.

Keep in mind that this camera is capable.
And just port GCam onto the phone like I did, the Night scape images with GCam are almost equal to iPhone 11's Night mode.
It's NOT CRAP.

How does the wired headphone volume and sound quality compares with mate 20x?
Love it! I got mine for $300 shipped brand new, since I had $200 in ebay gift cards! So much bang for the buck!!
Awesome phone
Fast, responsive, the fastest 4G i've every experienced, and that screen! The FPS is also fast too.
I sold my Note 10+ as the ROG2 just kills it in almost every way. Probably the only thing that was better on the Note10+ was the triple camera setup. But TBH, for what I do with photography, its perfectly fine - and there's always Snapseed for minor corrections.
