There is no FireOS 5.1.1 for 7th gen (2017) Fire 7 devices. If you have 5.1.1 it's likely a 5th gen. Use the SuperTool to root, block OTA and perform other useful functions prior to installing a custom ROM.

You probably mixed the versions of Android (lollipop 5.1.1) and fireOS (5.some.more.numbers). Since the first one is identical for all versions of fireOS for this device, please only use the latter one.
Yet there's no known root method for 5.3.2.1 and later.

My kindle fire 7 came with 5.0.1 thats why

Answered (conceptually) in another thread. Almost certainly a 5th gen (2015) Fire vs 7th gen (2017) Fire 7.

HELP | Downgrade from version 5.1.2.1 to version 5.1.1.

Hi, I need help. Recently bought my Amazon Fire 5 gen. I'm trying to remove the Fire OS and install the CM 11. However, by inattention, I downgraded from version 5.1.2.1 to version 5.1.1. Now my Fire is no longer booting. Is there a solution?
Thanks.

Buying Amazon Fire now - CM question

Hi all,
I have a question regarding Amazon Fire 7. If I buy it today on Amazon (Fire Tablet with Alexa 7 inch $49.99) and do not power it on at all / do not update the firmware, what Fire OS version/firmware does it come with? Can I install CyanogenMod on it? Thanks!

- root is a prerequisite for installing a custom ROM
- likely 5.3.2.1 or 5.3.3.x which are not rootabl at present
- CM is available but no longer being maintained; best option is Fire Nexus
Thank you, so does that mean a brand new fire tablet bought today is not rootable at all?

Likely, but not a forgone conclusion. Amazon sometimes ships out older stock sporting earlier builds of FireOS (<5.3.2.1) that can still be rooted. Typically those devices automatically update themselves to the latest version of FireOS when powered up - but that behavior can be blocked.
Devices acquired through Amazon Warehouse are more likely to come with an older version of FireOS. Of course, there are no guarantees.
I just bought a fire tablet 16gb ($59.99) yesterday (5/2/17) at best buy and it came with OS ver 5.1.3 which auto updated itself to 5.1.4 only and nothing higher (thank goodness). Was able to downgrade to 5.1.2 and achieve root.
So I guess your just going to have to purchase one and hope it comes with FireOS <5.3.2.1. Good Luck!

Which Fire Tablets Are Rootable and Have Custom Roms?

If I buy a Fire tablet from Amazon now, which ones are rootable and have custom roms?
Is there a thread that keeps a list of fire devices that are currently rootable, and which ones have custom roms?
Thanks!
You'd preferably want to find a 5th gen Fire. They have ROM support and can be rooted (make sure to keep it on a semi-old version though before trying to root)

I can't speak for 6th gen obviously since I haven't owned one. 7th gen, not yet. If you buy a 7th gen you will probably have to wait... some time (a long time).
Confirmed Root (I own these devices)
Fire 7: Root available on those devices with Fire OS 5.3.1 or earlier
Kindle 8.9: Root, bootloader unlocked, flashed with TWRP. All versions of that tablet are rootable. This is my favorite tablet.
HD 10: I can confirm, as of today, (I just bought the HD 10) is rootable as early as FireOS 5.4.1.0

There is no root for the Fire 7, (7th generation, 2017) yet.
Sent from my Amazon KFSUWI using XDA Labs
Will there be a chance for unlocking the Bootloader of Fire HD 10 any time soon? LineageOS would be really nice to have!

Almost zero. Last successful bootloader unlock was on 3rd gen (2013) HDX. Very difficult nut to crack.

Toss in a dual hyper-clocked octa-core, Android Z preview and an integrated Nutriblast Pro 9000 while we're in there.

Newbie questions

Hi all,
I understand that it is not possible to root Amazon Fire 8 HD 7th Gen running 5.6.2.0.
I assume that also means there is no way to install a custom more native stock android rom on these devices?
Would anyone be able to explain in simple terms what has Amazon done to these devices that makes it so hard to break so we can root and custom ROM them?
Thank you in advance

Good coding and testing practices. Kudos to Amazon and Google for wringing out the 'slop' in Android and its derivatives which opened the door to root (and therefore security) exploits.
Custom rom
Just want to get it confirmed. if you have Amazon Fire 8 HD aor Fire 7, both 7th gen with Amazon's latest upgrade. 5.6.2 i think it is. is there any way to get a custom ROM on? for example [ROM][AOSP][LMY49M] Fire Nexus ROM [02 JUN 2018] ?
Not quite sure i understand correctly if i need to root it before I can custom rom it
Thx

The only Amazon tablet that can be rooted at the moment is the HD 10, 2017.

Downgrade 5th Gen Fire

Hello. I own a Fire 7 (5th generation) tablet running Fire OS 5.3.6.4. I want to install Android on it, but from what I've heard, you need to be on 5.3.1. Is there a way to downgrade and install Android without ruining the tablet? Thanks!

No. Fire Os 5.3.2.1 and up there's no known root method.
If you downgrade to 5.3.1 you will brick the fire.
