Hi! First of all I have a question... Why our lovely Xperia SP has that memory management? No matter what I do it becomes laggy after some hours (android 4.3), but after rebooting it is just fine, over 380/400 MB free!
I have been investigating a little bit in my owm phone and I found this: No matter what I do changing kernel or rom I can't change the values on /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/adj they are (always): 0,58,117,235,529,1000
I was wondering if this could be the origin of all our problems with RAM management! Please answer.. As far as I see this options
1. Investigate if changing this values make something important
2. Ask Sony (with signatures) for an update, or at least fixing all 4.3 bugs!, cause I was in Vanir AOSP 4.4.2 and it has always over 400 Mb RAM free, and my firend's moto g in 4.4.2 has the same, BUT it has worse gaming (Vanir), pease help?
I'm going back to 4.1.2 and see if it can be changed there
Thanks!
Edit: I just flashed stock indian tft 2.254 and RAM its damn good almost 500MB free, i'll test and see if it stills "eating it"
4.3 is disgusting. Its time Sony must hire new developers.
Ram management is awful. Even after using greenify, Ram is below 200mb. Unnecessary app and services are running in the background like mirrorlink, throw which I dont use.
Another weird problem after 4.3 update is phone automatically switches off itself when connected to charging overnight. After switching it on the uptime is over 8 hours.

You are right not just sony but almost every company, comming from HTC and was the same :/
But I'm now running on stock 12.0.A.2.254 (indian TFT) and after debloating a little bit and odexing with titanium backup i'm really happy for now, RAM management is great I always have over 400 Mb free! And obviusly it has less bugs than 4.3, I highly recommend it if you are up to accept lossing the useless Sony's update
I think if you want to change the values if /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/adj you first need to mount / as R/W. You find that option in. ES File Manager on the sidebar below, click on Root Explorer and than on Mount as RW.

will try thanks!
I actually covered this adj when discussing ram issues with a dev friend of mine. They should be much lower, however it seems impossible to edit. Might play with deeper permissions like chown and report if I have success
Edit: ok I actually managed to change it with just mount R/W, this didn't work on 4.1 rom. Have roughly halved the values, will report if I have any success

Yeah I got back to 4.3 to test what you said in your own post, I made a script, but on 4.1 still better and more RAM, and it has no.bugs, however it looks that 4.3 is smoother while gaming... what do you think? please give me your personal opinion! :3
oh btw my current values are 0,10,20,40,90,150 if you wanna try them... (stock minfrees)
Hello,
Waiting for my Z3 Compact to arrive. I can't wait!
Question for you owners out there. Did Sony add the option under storage settings like they did with the Z2 to move apps to SD?
Fingers crossed!
Thanks in advance!
Would like to know myself. Seems like a boneheaded move if it's not an available feature by default. I mean, I know eventually root will allow us to achieve apps2sd even if it weren't, but it would be such an Apple move if this were a restriction.
I could only see 'Transfer data to SD card'
Photos
Videos
Music
no apps or any other options yet.
App2SD is not present and I'd predict that it'll also not come. I'd already be happy if we could get write access to the SD. Thank you Google... no, I don't want to use your Cloud "services".
Can you set pictures, videos and Music to get stored on the SDcard by default? Setting the location by default would make things much easier. Not too worried about 16gb for apps, always was fine for my N4 with everything else as well. Just needed to clean up storage every once in awhile.

Anyone found a solution to this, running low on internal storage!
Luckily Google will bring back Apps2SD in Lollipop. Now we just have to wait, till Sony releases a LP rom...

Hey all, in KitKat we introduced APIs that let apps read/write file in app-specific directories on secondary storage devices, such as SD cards.
We heard loud and clear that developers wanted richer access beyond these directories, so in Lollipop we added the new ACTION_OPEN_DOCUMENT_TREE intent. Apps can launch this intent to pick and return a directory from any supported DocumentProvider, including any of the shared storage supported by the device. Apps can then create, update, and delete files and directories anywhere under the picked tree without any additional user interaction. Just like the other document intents, apps can persist this access across reboots.
This gives apps broad, powerful access to manage files while still involving the user in the initial selection process. Users may choose to give your app access to a narrow directory like "My Vacation Photos," or they could pick the top-level of an entire SD card; the choice is theirs.

you can set the default image/video location from the camera settings, read somewhere that you can do the same with music via the play music app.
Okay probably got that wrong, but on the other hand effectively it's the solution to the problem. If the apps can easily store their biggest part of data on the SD, the internal memory will be save.
Xiaomi Mi 5 is a great phone and it's biggest flaw appears to be OS. I don't really mind the aesthetic of MIUI, some additional features are nice. My only problem is that MIUI has super weird memory management. My phone has 3GB of RAM which I considered to be plenty. I don't ever game on my phone, I keep Spotify, Messenger and some reddit/browser open. I've seen on a considerably lower end device, samsung galaxy a5, that it handles background tasks much better, you don't need to pin any applications and it keeps so much more in memory. I've also tried most of different settings, disabling memory optimization, disabling MIUI optimizations.
Unfortunately I'm heavy user of Android Pay so I cannot switch to a custom ROM. How do you handle multitasking, what is some optimal setting for Mi 5? Is there a way to make phone not kill my alarm clock app without locking it in memory(same with active music player)?
Why you cant switch to custom rom?
Android Pay works fine with Magisk on any rom.

From what I've read it's very clunky, sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I wouldn't also want to sacrifice the performance of the camera and builtin app lock.
Like mention on the title..
bought a Sandisc 128 GB Micro Sd card and there is NO other option other than just " format" ...
i am pretty sure that Android DOES support that feature since MM .....
so does this have to do with Nokia/HMD or am i missing something?

This is most likely due to Google as they instruct manufacturers not to include it (in the ui) in a higher capacity devices (32gb or more).
At least that is what I gathered when I was looking for a way to get nokia 8 to format ext-sd card with a file system that supports over 4gb files.
Most likely you can enable it similarly like they managed to do so with the Samsung galaxy s7, and it didn't even require root access.

i thing there is an option when using a file manager, just like it shows from here
https://fossbytes.com/android-sd-card-internal-storage-adoptable-storage/
Here are the steps to adopt your SD card:
Put the SD card inside your Android phone and wait for it to get detected.
Now, open Settings.
Scroll down and go to the Storage section.
Tap the name of your SD card.
Tap the three vertical dots on the top right corner of the screen.
Tap Storage Settings.
Choose format as internal option.
On next screen, you have the final chance to decide whether you want to change your mind. Tap Erase & Format if you want to format your SD card as internal storage.

Oh, didn't know that... Still i dont have the phone to try it because i'm still waiting for the phone to arrive in Cyprus !
I have added a 32GB SD card into my Nokia 8, and now whenever I restart it, I get the SD card icon in the notification area. It's a small niggle, but anyone know how to stop this happening?
"The message is: Samsung SD card
For transferring photos and media"
I know this though, and I don't need to be told every time I start the phone...
The reason I feel SD card can't be used as internal memo is due to the fact that it cannot be formatted as exfat or NTFS. There's a separate thread on that.

something new?
hello can you help me please someone knows if the method indicated by hinuk works because as far as I require root because the memory encrypts it in EXT4 format

Wish I'd read your post before I wasted £30 on an ad card that will only format as portable. The phone user guide certainly promotes and says it can be formatted as either. What's the point of portable storage I wonder?
Oh, don't you hate it!!
Just bought Nokia 8, only to find I cannot move all my apps to the SD card to free up the internal memory. What a total waste of money, even at 64gb it is still an option I require. Also I was stunned to find that contrary to all the specifications I had read from various sources, I ended up with a single sim version when I wanted a dual sim version. Darn, I think I'll get rid of it and get a phone that does everything I want it to do.... a pox on you Nokia and Google too!!!
Using ADB to get adoptable storage?
I tried using the method shown for getting adoptable storage on the Galaxy s7. I connected to my Nokia 8 using ADB, I found the name of the SD card I'd inserted into my phone, and then I ran "sm partition disk:179,0 private" and received the following error message: "java.lang.IllegalStateException: command '16 volume partition disk:179,0 private' failed with '400 16 Command failed'" I found another post which said that in order to run this command on Android Oreo, I first had to run "sm set-force-adoptable-storage true", however when I tried this, I received the error message: "java.lang.IllegalStateException: Adoptable storage not available on device with native FBE".
Does anyone know if there is a way around this? I haven't been able to find anything else which might allow me to use my Nokia 8 with adoptable storage.

For the first time ever since getting my Mate 10 on launch day, I just received a pop up notification to defragment my phone which will improve performance. I did so. Wow they were not wrong there! Everything is so quick now. Apps launch super quickly! Anyone else had the opportunity to defragment their phone?

Stange, I got the same phone and rom version .
All I've got was an update to .132 yesterday....
haven't noticed anything about defragmenting phone......
Where can I find it?
cheers.
Great Post.
I don't think you can find it. It just appears out of nowhere. I guess it depends on how much you have used your storage and delete and save files.
One thing I have done recently is empty the recycle bin folder in the gallery app which had over 30 days of deleted photos and videos. Perhaps deleting the accumulated storage taken up left a big gap in the storage file system. This is purely a hunch. Have no idea if this was the reason I got the defragmentation notification.
I wish I took a screenshot of it now.
Just found this blurb.... Defragmentation is mentioned....
"The HUAWEI Mate 10 and HUAWEI Mate 10 Pro take the “Born Fast, Stay Fast” promise to a new dimension. Leveraging AI-powered Battery Management, the devices improve memory allocation utilization, using different mechanisms such as: CPU Resource Allocation and Management, Run-time Memory Management, IO Resource Management, Storage Management and Defragmentation and Battery Management."
Yup I get a de-fragmentation pop up once in a while.
Still waiting for a firmware popup.
I saw this once and laughed, remembered me of Windows 98.
Android is supposed to support trim, so devrafmantation shouldn't be a thing... Unless Huawei is calling it Defrag but instead they're doing something else behind the scenes.
Anyways, the born fast stay fast BS is based on the system continuously trying to shutdown processes ASAP and keep them from working properly, and it's continuously pushing the user to delete all kind of "unused" files.
So I've a phone with 128 GB storage and 6GB of ram, but I neither can use the storage nor keep apps open in RAM cuz the system doesn't like it.
Wished we could disable the phone manager and its BS entirely.

I agree, that could be the reason apps like Adguard keep getting killed regardless of if its been whitelisted in Phone Manager.
As we approach having a stable TWRP/Root solution for ALP's, (cudos to Pretoriano80) I hope devs would find a solution to the over zealous AI/NPU.

You are full of BS, one of the weaknesses of F2FS is fragmentation decreases performance more than EXT4, so it actually needs defragmentation.
doesnt F2FS do auto trim?

I just got the notification to defragment on my Huawei P10 VTR-L09 and I clicked it, But I was doing something so I decided to go back to it and do it later. I figured I would be able to do a search In the settings to find the defragment option. Well guess what... It is not there. I guess the only way to defragment is when the system wants you to and not whenever you feel like it. I should have just done the defrag when I first got the message. Now I have to wait until it pops up again.... They should give you the option in the phone manager. Anyone know how frequently the defrag option pops up??

Yes a warning to others. If you get the defrag option, you MUST do it there and then. Do not navigate away from that notification as you can't get it back.
