NO! Running the battery down to zero is hurtful to the battery and shortens it's life.

I saw this too and wanted to know what is going on. My phone has never hit zero and idk if I should test.

Well, I'm sure we would like to know if we have a defective phone or battery and get Samsung to warranty it while it's still covered. For me, I've never ran my battery down to zero, but now I will, because I don't want to find out when it's too late.

I ran into this issue a month ago. Couldn't find anything on the net about it. Wound up just letting it charge for a day. Never got an LED letting me know it was charging or anything. The next day, got bored...figured it was a paper weight so was gonna go to TMobile the nexy day to figure out my options. Had it plugged into my power bank. Sat there for the duration of a movie just switching the power bank on and off with the phone connected. About an hour after the movie was over I swear the red LED light come on. So I let I charge for another 4 hours and hit the power button and it actually booted up.
I was so relieved lol

Could there be any way to check if my phone might have this problem without actually draining the battery?
Curious, there any way this may be fixable by Samsung? May be firmware change to switch off at low battery?

This used to happen on my galaxy tab 4. I would do this to bring it back.
Someone else's word can describe it better. This is a quote from android central
"It's called Stack Charging. Some devices need a tiny amount of current to run the charging control. You get a few seconds of charging before the charge control system kicks in, so plugging in and unplugging about 30 seconds apart builds up enough of a charge for the phone to take over. I have done this before, more than once, to revive a seemingly dead device. Sometimes it took 20 minutes of plugging and unplugging - but it did work."

I think it's over hype.. Every note I have had, it's gone down to zero (never hurt my battery life), and I've had this one too zero a few times also already. Who knows, could be something in that software..
I saw them mention the same three senarios in like 5 stories.. And they've sold a lot of notes (mine included).. So, there probably are a few with issues of some type unfortunately. But I don't (hope) think it's the crrraaaaazzzzzyyyyy situation like the 7. If it does come down to that (which I seriously and personally doubt) I'm done..
Point is, wouldn't panic personally.. And I'm not going to..

Tested. No issues. Charging right back up.
Edit for clarity: after displaying the message, the device powered down.
Verizon variant.
Stock/not rooted
Snapdragon

I hope I have that issue. Maybe I can swap the phone then and get one without OEM issue.

This is the actual statement for Sammy:
Of course, Samsung is taking all reports of this kind seriously, we only received a very small number of customer inquiries that could be linked to charge management, and unfortunately we can only comment on the matter further if we have more detailed information about the affected devices. I have exynos. Had trouble getting it to charge after 0% 2 times in a row. Had to fiddle to get it charging.

I am now remembering that this issue is not so uncommon, I had a nokia n95, a nokia n97, a galaxy s3 that behaved exactly the same, if batt reached zero and autopowering off, I had to connect them for a while, then disconnected for another while, after that the devices charged normally, letting a device to reach zero is very, very negligent, So, do not panic, do not start spreading concerns about batteries, just take good care of the charge levels, most important, your battery will have a longer useful life

Try telling that to my kids, who regularly let their phones run all the way down, no matter how many times I tell them to keep their phones charged and why they need to stay charged. SMH

Battery bloated or bulged :-/

Guys need some advice. Recently i have been having problems with battery life of galaxy note, so following some advices from other forums, i tried beter battery stats and found nothing was wrong. But today I have taken out the battery off my galaxy note, and i found that the battery has bloated a bit..i mean it bulged than its normal size and the back cover does not fit as confortably as it used to. Now my observations are, with no data on(even wifi) battery lasts for one and half day of calling and texting. But battery lasts not more than 2 hrs if data is on (even with wifi also). So does it mean i should change my battery? Or can i go on? Ofcourse battery life is pathetic when i switch on 3G or 2G or wifi. All i want to know is, is it safe to use this battery even if it has bloated a bit, bcoz its still good if i dont switch on any kind of data usage. Or will it damage my Note?

this has happened to me b4. not with not but other phone. battery bulged from back side. cuz I was using a diff charger not of the right rating or keeping it in charging for the entire night. Or may be a non official battery. any ways u should change the battery.
There are a few questions i want to ask, they may be sily but still want to know bcoz i dont want my battery to suffer.
1. Can will charge the battery with data on, i mean either 2G, 3G or WiFi on, with some downloading or buffering going on?
2. Ca we charge the battery while running some apps. Like watching video or listening to music, both via speakers not headphones.
3. And when is the best time to keep the phone for charging. I generally charge my mobile when its less than 10%.
4. Why does prolong charging damage the battery? I mean, when charging is full, doesn't the mobile cut the power input, even if charger is plugged in?

1. Yes
2. Yes.
3. Some people like to let the phone run dry i.e. power off so that they know like every last bit of battery is used.
But I don't think it makes too much of a difference.
4. I'm not really sure with this question.
But I think there are two sides to this argument.
First is, cuz it is still connected to power, it still drains battery or something. I'm not sure.
Second is, over charging is a myth and you can go nuts and over charge it cuz as you said, it stops charging when fully charged.
Feel free to correct me on anything I screwed up in.
i guess 1,2,3 has bee correctly answered..
4: i would like to add is i am sure phone cuts the charge and so does laptops.. but with laptop it is not recommended to keep the charger plugged in when its full.. its always recommended to disconnect the charger.. as mentioned in some battery guides as well. there are software installed in pc for limiting the charge to 80 or 85 % called as battery care functions... which clearly states that it saves battery life in the long run. so i guess its applicable to phones as well.. u may not find an immediate diff but i am sure ur battery will long last
as i said before.. i dont take these chances with Note but i had the same issue with a Nokia phone that i owned..
Sounds like heat dammage. The battery has a bag inside which swells during charging. The hard case is bigger than it needs to be ,to take acc. of this. If it has buckled the outer case it loks to me you have been using power draining apps while charging. Its got vv hot made gases and bullged. It's ruined. Id not use it ,incase it leaks into the phone. so long as the charger has more capacity in watts than the battery needs it will just take what it needs. Never use a charger of higher voltage!!!
As someone said overcharge is a myth. So is the need to drain the battery every time on lithium-pollimer.
Were you using a Samsung or generic batt?

I use only the samsung charger thst came with the phone. I do not use any ither charger.
Yeah but i have to make a point here. The way i use my mobile. I use my mobile a lot, i mean we all do, but please read on to see if the way i use my mobile is not good.
Generaly everyone gets free time from friday nights to monday morning. So, from friday night to sunday night, the way i use my mobile is.....continuous usage of net, say i have forgot using my laptop, desktop and note is the only device, even for facebook etc etc...then gaming as we all do....next videos and music (using both headphones and speaker)....then watching videos on mobile, both online and downloaded, sometimes watching streaming movies online (while charging too)
So all i want to say is, I use my mobile a lot on these three days in such a way, that my charging goes from 100% to 25% within 2 to 3 hrs and then i charge till 100%, and still use the mobile while charging for music or videos. Its like i dont give rest to my battery...
Does usage of mobiles this heavily damage batterys....i said all this because i want to know if my usage is the reason behind my batterys damage, so that i can avoid it when i buy the new battery. I use even XDA from my Note all the time and I have both posted and replied to this thread from my Note itself, i almost forgot using my Laptop

1. Yes.. I'm doing that for 3months now..
2. Yes.. I'm doing that for 3months now..
3. I always run my battery to the point that it turns off the phone..
4. I dont believe in the "overcharging" when you keep your phone plugged in for long.. With the big salary of Samsung Engineers, for sure they have thought of that and protected the device/battery from overcharging..
I tend to keep away from tethering and/or plugging my phone to a USB port since it charges the battery no matter what % it is.. I really want to fully discharge a battery before charging it... Had an old nokia phone and its battery has been going strong for 4years now... So im going to stay with this method to take care of my battery..
As for your bulged battery, i would go with the earlier replies.. It was most probably caused by heat damage.. Either you placed it in a hot place while charging.. or placed it on top of some cloth.. I charge my phone face down so the battery can dissipate the heat.. I notice that it tends to overheat if i have it charged face up..

Ok guys thanks a lot for all your replies...but i want to know one thing for sure....using a bulged battery like the one i have now...does it damage the phone in anyway??
And the other thing i want to point out is, the battery is bulged..but for some reason, even with data connection on all the time, battery is lasting for almost 4 hrs. I wonder wats happening now, with my phone's battery.
Although i have decided to order a new battery now, and i am mostly thinking to order one Samsung Battery from Samsung and one Mugen 5400 mAp battery too. But till i get those batteries, can i use my phone with this bulged battery?? Or will it damage my phone in anyway??

I think once it's started bulging, it's only going to increase in size and you run the risk of the seams splitting and it leaking which would make a real mess of the internals beyond repair pretty instantly., but that being said, I'd be surprised if that was to happen before you got replacements delivered. There's always a risk but you should be ok.

Im the same my friend. I've not used my laptop in months. My gf lives in the usa do I'm on skype all the time as well as the net .
I had heat problems. It was down to the rom...well since I changed I've not had it . I'm using cassies with it stripped back . The middle choice in aroma .using hydracore OC but have it under clocked to 1200. The phone works great at that . Id say your games are a problem.don't use a case to play .id also say you are better keeping the charger on if you are using it a lot. Draining then charging and using stresses the tree. Better to keep it full.
Get CPU spy to see how much you are using the cpu and what frequencys. Do that and drop me a pm anytime:thumbup:

Thanks a lot for the information and the advice to get RID off the bloated battery, I thought Batteries exploding is a myth, but looks like I have to agree they may explode as so many members here say that.
The battery I am using has reached a state where I was unable to fit it with my back case, So I have replaced it with a genuine Samsung battery as I could not afford to wait, even for 3 or 4 days without my Note. But then, as you mentioned about cases being the reason for heat damage, I use the below two cases for my Note. Do you think they are harmful for Note?
http://www.flipkart.com/amzer-94203...PHAZ&ref=d3b725c6-32a7-4104-8329-3170c53c88c1
http://www.flipkart.com/amzer-92933...YC2Z&ref=f7c6e607-3dd6-4f38-bcc2-fcc748923dd0
And Yes, I have installed Cpu Spy as you suggested, I will let you know my findings.
i guess both the cases are fine.. just make sure none has magnets cuz that interferes with the touch and spen sensitivity

Solved erratic battery issues

Like many others I was experiencing weird battery issues. It would jump 5% increments within seconds. I'd have 46% turn on a movie and 2 minutes later it would shut off. I tried every app fix in the play store as well as different kernels and ROMs. During this issue I broke the screen sent it in for repair and they said they'd fix the draw problem. All they did was Chang the data cable. I got it back and it was worse than before. Before I sent it in I ordered a replacement battery and decided as a last attempt to fix the problem I installed it. Believe it or not I'm now getting 8 hrs sot. I watch the battery meter expecting it to change but it stays on the same number for at least 15 minutes. Hers a screen shot of halfway through a cycle. Also when I go to sleep i wake up to find the battery meter is on the same number as when I went to sleep. Finally it seems all I needed was a new battery. Hope this helps others
Can't get the screenshot to load gets stuck on processing but these are the stats
50% used in 21h
Screen on time 4 hrs 6 minutes
Well congrats you got it fixed, too bad you had to spend your own money to buy a battery. You would think that would be covered under warranty?

I bought the tab online the battery I bought from batteryship.com for $35 comes with free toolkit which was awesome. They even have a walk through video on yt. B4 the most I'd get was 2.5 hrs sot now I'm getting over 8hrs I can't kill it videos gaming nothing. I know a lot of times batteries are just rebranded but its funny Samsung's OEM is crap and aftermarket is quality. IMO its definitely the battery.

Depending on the countries legislation, a manufacturer can't really decide a certain component isn't covered under warranty. If a device is warranted for 12months from defect then so are all of its components.

Samsung covers batteries but I think they know exactly what's causing this issue they just don't want to absorb the cost of changing out all these batteries.
Moto X 2014
The only thing that Samsung do not cover is loss of battery capacity - they do cover faulty batteries for 1 year.
How do you prove that the battery is faulty?
I have been getting erratic battery performance also, how do you prove that the battery is defective?
I was just having a look to price a battery for my T800, I found one on ebay uk at an amazing price with free shipping.

John.
I just bought a Tab S 10.5 yesterday as a replacement for my Nexus 10 who's battery is almost useless. Right now you simply can't find N10 batteries so depending on how long you plan to hold onto your Tab S, buying a replacement now may be a good investment even if it is only used to increase its resale value down the road.

Battery Experts say that you should not buy extra li-ion battery`s that you are not going to use, like a spare battery that you alternate with the one that came with the phone, camera, ect.
As as soon as an li-ion battery comes off the production line it will start to age if it is used or not, so you might buy a replacement battery, and put it into storage and 3-5 years later you come to put it in your tablet, but find that 50% of the battery`s capacity has been lost.
If you really abuse your battery and it dies within 6 months to an year it might be worth buying an replacement then, but only if it`s a really really good never to be repeated price, or you are in a country that you cannot get a warranty repair.
John.

How do you dial on a wifi tablet?
another battery problem
I have 2 tab s8.4 to play with.... mine was bronze my sister has the white one... both t705... on my tab i am not having any battery problem but with my sister At first it was having erratic battery issue... i opened it re attached the battery and problem fixed she had longer time to use the tab.. it could go on for more than 12 hrs.. now she used a power bank to charge her tab for only about 10-15 mins because she needed it and while we were eating out.. A day passed her tab is experiencing the similar erratic battery.. from 45% down to 20% then restared it 36%.. what seems to be the problem?? Should i reopen the tab?
The same issue is with my tab s 705. Battery goes to 4% from 100% in 25 mins. Shuts down & when restarted it show 74%, but again behaves the same way with different %. Mediaserver also runs a lot, i have not rooted tab s.

Try reattaching the battery and fully drain then fully charge it then ×#0228#... worked for me
I just returned my tablet for this same exact issue was playing Hearthstone on it after 35 days of having the device all of a sudden it was dropping from 100% to dead in 45 min. After it turned off I would turn it back on and it would be at 75% battery. It would then die in about 20-30 min again and when i turned it on it would be around 40% and so on and so on until it actually hit 0%.
Things I tried before I returned it:
- Full discharge and Charging while the device was on on a slow charge
- Full Discharge and slow charging while device off
- Battery Calibration
EDIT:Thing specific to my use.
- The device was ALWAYS charged with a 1amp anker backup battery/ charger over night
- The device was plugged in to a belkin quick charger 2amp most of the day while at work
- The device was always charged with a 2amp standard Samsung charger when at home and needed a cap off
I did not try the dial trick or opening the devices up because of how new it was. Can I ask why would using the ×#0228#... Do anything for the battery this seems to be a misreported battery capacity that is coming directly from the battery. I could see the reconnect doing something I just don't understand how ×#0228# could do anything for the issue being displayed.

This definitely seems to be a connection with battery, or calibration issue. I have no idea what that number does so... yeah. When you play a youtube video or some sort, does the battery drops still happen when just playing a video? The last thing I can think of is type that number in and see what happens. If the problem still persist, I'd suggest you take your tab back

Mine is already returned I am picking up the replacement in store today. I was with in my 45 day grace period wasn't going to go crazy with it. If I had seen the ×#0228# suggestion before returning it I would have done that to but I didn't. I hopped in this thread in the hopes of helping others who weren't as lucky as to be with in the grace period for return and repurchase brand new.
Not looking forward to re-customizing my tablet when I get it. No root(for warranty reasons i don't root till it expires......LIKE this one I am in now) = fun adding all the accounts back!

Tab S2 slow charging

Hi. My T813 (with snapdragon) charges very slow. It needs almost an entire day to charge to 100%. I read that it only accepts original charger. Is someone here who has T813 and an original bundle charger? Can you please provide the exact model? Is it EP-TA12EWE?
I have the T-810 model, and noticed that after the Nougat update, my S2 now takes FOREVER to charge. This is using the OEM charger I have used since Day 1. Makes me wonder if Samsung tweaked something in the software for slower charging to maintain battery health.
I just got t813 from eBay for a few days. I don't know how long it charges from 0 to 100% but when I use it and charge at same time, it still charge up. So I guess it charges fast. I use model EP-TA12JWE with Rapow cable. BTW battery life is very good all stock no root yet.
The day before the Nougat update came to my S2 9.7 (Monday for me) my battery stopped charging almost completely.
It's been on the Samsung supplied charger for close to 36 hours and is just now at 38% - and the tablet has been off the whole time!
Of course my 1 year parts/labor warranty through Samsung ran out almost 6 weeks ago.
It's a damn shame because it has performed flawlessly until now and with the exception of the sharp edges on the body I absolutely LOVE the tablet...
PS: I have the smaller 8.0 version as well (as does my wife) and the charging/battery life are as expected.

Nope, that's not true. I use an Anker quick charger.

Updates..
Apple used to use updates to obsolete older tech so as to make customers buy their new devices sooner. Irony.

Interesting info, Mr. Niceguy.
The Drok device will definitely take some mah.
But I highly doubt an iPad will be better.
No SD card support. Hell no!

I'm not sure of the laws where you are but I'm fairly certain that in Australia that doesn't matter. Consumer law says something about "reasonable life" and manufacturers cannot limit you to 1 year for something like that. You should look into it where you are just in case.

In Europe they give at least a 2 years warranty on electronics. And some stores offer warranty extensions up to 4 years.
Personally, I think handsets should last at the very least 5 years, better yet a decade.

Unfortunately in the US it's simply whatever the mtg says it is - mostly 12 months parts/labor/defects...
Though, in the US electronics are even cheaper than in Europe.

I have the same issue
Or Samsung tweaked something in the software for slower charging so as to make you purchase the new s3 sooner.
My advice: avoid updates!

Problems with T-Mobile GN4. Read more

I recently sold my phone and got my friends old Galaxy Note 4 (T-Mobile) and immediately started flashing TWRP and a custom rom on it. Now, I've noticed that something fishy was going on with the battery percentage because once it starts to go below between 30% - 20%, it'll immediately cut off and triggers a bootloop until the phone's battery drains. Sometimes when it shows me a low battery notification at 15%, it shoots to 11% right after. I don't get it, is it possibly the battery being defected or the phone itself cause I had a Black Note 4 (under the same network) and it NEVER had these kind of problems and was using the same exact roms (on the proper baseband and kernel). If anyone could explain why this is happening and could give me a solution, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks
Currently running the Maximum Overdrive S7 Edge Port MM Port ROM
Buy a new battery.
Defective Note 4?
Hello, my father has a note 4, it's 1 year old, and 6 months ago, we got a new battery from Amazon, and it dies at 14% exactly, and when you charge it. It boots up at 14%, but again when removed from charger, it dies at 14%. Not to sure what to do... Old battery does the same I'm pretty sure.

Bypass battery and use DC

Hi,
I have a note 8. I had thought today that is therr any possibility that somehow when mobile is connected to the DC it bypass the battery and use the direct current instead of charging the battery and using the AC.
Means maybe we can have the toggle to get the battery charged or use the DC when pluged in.
Anyone can shed some light on this concept?
TIA.

It already does that as the battery reaches 100%. Why would you want it to NOT charge the battery when plugged into DC if the battery is not 100%?

Dear @KruseLudsMobile as i have heard if we use the mobile while charging it reduces the battery life. Like i play games and sometimes i need the phone for use but battery is needed to charge in that case i want to usw DC and charge it later once i have done with game.
Further the earlier statement of yours is not endorsed by anyone as overcharging may harm your battery according to alot android forums.
I would like to seek further clearance on this. And what you suggest i may plug in my phone at 9 pm and sleep and can unplug the phone at 9 am and there would be no effect on battery, is that you are saying?

Yes, LOL
To be thorough in our answer, we have two items here:
1. We do not know the details of how Samsung's circuitry manages powering the phone while on and charging the battery at the same time. Ideally they would be separate and the battery would still be charged while only the DC power supplied would be accessed by the phone for power usage to run the phone. On older phones I have seen the battery % go down even while plugged in to a charger if it is using something intensive like a game. Does that happen here with both generic chargers as well as Samsung adaptive chargers or Samsung Fast Chargers? If it stays at 100% while you are using it when plugged in, that is the best scenario because you are not using the battery at all!
2. Leaving the phone plugged in while idle for long periods of time such as overnight while you are asleep. In this case, overcharging used to be possible but with this phone (and all modern phones) there is circuitry in place which stops the charging when the phone is at 100% so this is not an issue.
Lastly, with Lithium Ion batteries, the life is shortened by A. draining it often as it only has a limited number of charging cycles, B. Draining it down to a very low level such as down to 2% or 0%, and C. Storing it unused for long periods when charged to 100% (that is why you see most batteries only have 50-75% of a charge when you buy it new - that is the optimal storage level when not used for a long time.
When reading documentation on batteries, be sure you read it from a good source and it is written recently (older documentation sometimes refers to Nickel Cadmium batteries (without saying so) which are very different).
I leave mine turned on and charging overnight, and whenever possible, keep it plugged in while in use. This gas prolonged the life of my phone batteries - mine typically last 4 years. Keeping it plugged in and using it while at 100% allows you to use the phone without even using the battery at all, and that really prolongs it's life because it is not using any of the finite charging cycles.
About charging cycles: draining the phone to 50%, charging it to 100%, then using it down to 50% again, then recharging it to 100% again - in that case you have used one charging cycle. Make sense? There is software on the play store that tells you how many charging cycles your battery has been through, called "Charge Cycle Counter". I've attached a picture of it from my phone.
Hope this helps...

I'm not sure if I buy into that. I've plugged many 'modern' phones (if we're talking after 2015) for extended periods of time (more than two months connected to charger) and the battery swelled up on all of them. Specifically I'm talking about my Nexus 6P, LG G4, Lenovo K3 Note and Moto Z.
I use some of these phones as an IP cam, and without a charge limiter set in place, it will all eventually swell. From what I've heard, the ASUS ROG phones and Sony phones are currently the only ones that bypass the battery when it reaches 100%.

Fair enough... my experience the last couple of years (you are replying to a very old post) I've been using the Samsung Galaxy Note series of phones - and that has been my experience - leave plugged in or on wireless charger whenever near same... battery never swells and lasts maybe 3-4 years!
