Nexus 4 performance report

Hi Nexus 4 users,
Its been a week some people received and started using nexus 4.can you all post the performance so far in terms of below.
Multitasking
Average battery life
Ui experience
Any flaws detected
Overall performance
It will be helpful for other users.

I am averaging about a day and a half battery life based on pretty frequent usage (novelty hasn't worn off yet) which includes phone calls, internet use, light gaming and YouTube vids and such.
UI experience is great. I have it set up the same as my Nexus 7 and everything is responsive and just happens instantly.
Regarding the other points, performance has been flawless here. No matter what I'm running or how many things I'm running I haven't noticed any slowdown or stutter
It is proving to be an absolute beast of a phone and noticeably quicker than my Nexus 7.

My Nexus 4 Experience:
This phone is quick. I thought the Nexus 7 was blazing, but compare the performance of the 7 to the N4, there is no competition. I haven't seen the N4 slow down at all, and I've been trying to find the most taxing 3d games I can. So multitasking is a non-issue. It just works. Perfectly.
Battery life is impressive (for me), for the past week I have taken my phone off charge at 7:30am and I can make it home from school at around 4pm with 50% battery with light/moderate usage. Moderate usage being sending around 30 texts, light web surfing, taking a handful of photos. If I sit down with it for longer than say 10 minutes playing a 3D game/maps or something demanding like that, then it can chug juice like no tomorrow. If I desperately need the battery to go on for as long as possible, aeroplane mode basically reduces power consumption to 0.
Signal strength massively impacts battery life, I live in a rural area with poor signal (yellow/red on the battery graph) and my battery drains quicker unless I find a 'green' signal strength place. If you live in an urban environment, expect battery life to be better.
I love the stock android UI. It's so fast. I've set it up to be identical to my N7, which is really nice.
I do have the top speaker hissing noise, but in all honesty I forget about it in a call after a while. It's an annoyance, but for £250 I'm willing to put up with it.
It does get hot if you're doing something intensive with it, but that's probably due to glass being a better heat conductor. It's a non issue from what I can see, unless you have very sensitive hands.
My only regret it that it makes my N7 look like a tortoise compared to the blistering speeds of the N4.
My experience

Multitasking
The phone is a beast when multi-tasking and glides thru most of the functions I throw at it. My device however heats up especially when playing music. I noticed this when I'm at the gym or when the phone is plugged in car's auxiliary jack. When it heats up is when I notice hiccups and slow downs. I'm not sure if they are related, but I've come to the conclusion that they might be because it only suffers in performance when the phone is hot. And it's not warm it gets not. I can feel the heat with a silicon case and thru my denim. Will look into possibly exchanging if it persists.
Battery life
Battery life to me is equal to if only just a tad better compared to the Gnex. I am hoping that future ROMs from developers will improve it's battery life.
Ui experience
Jellybean is a pleasure to use. I also find it to be graphically appealing especially when personalized to your liking. Love Jellybeans animations and transitions. I'd describe it as sophisticated.
I'm not sure how to feel about the quick settings, as I find it requires more steps for you to actually do what you want to do. Clicking on data for example should just turn off data rather than take me to the data settings.
Any flaws detected
I have the shaking or rattling noise in my unit, but is not enough for me to worry about it. Besides the unusual heat, I have yellow stains on the bottom portion of my screen. I've read that it's the glue and should cure or settle or dry after a few days of use. If it doesn't go away, the heat and yellow stains is enough reason to exchange the device.
Overall performance
I am happy and completely satisfied with the purchase and the upgrade. Even the signal/data is better. And this unit is definitely louder than the GNEX. I just need a case or something. Any recommendations?

Personal Verdicts?

What are the verdicts so far from y'all lucky ones that have the phone already? I have seen lots of reviewers out there talk well about it but I'd like to know from the real life users who have been using the phone for days or more now!
I really want this phone and plan to get it when it drops in the US but what is everyones' personal review?

Of all the phones I've had I might just be the best. Battery life is good. I unplugged it 10 hours ago (8:15 am to 18:15) and I'm down to 70% in that time I've sent a few texts, emails, listen to podcast in my car over Bluetooth for half an hour. Taken a few pictures and listened to 20 mins of music. Not bad really. It's been on wifi for most of the day which is less taxing than 3G.
The screen is very sharp and colours are good. The screen looked a bit washed out for the first day or so, but that's because I've been using amoled for the last two years. Anyone thought the same? I'm already used to the new screen now though.
Still not sure about the camera? Stills really are hit and miss and when it misses its really not good. 1080p video is good, but only in standard mode. Use the 60fps or slow motion and there are some horrible artefacts which make it unusable for me.
The speakers are amazing! Listening to music on this just blows everything else away. Call quality is again a bit hit and miss. I've heard the odd hissing, popping and sometimes the caller sounding muffled, but in fairness the muffle could have been the caller's end.
So far I've not seen the slightest hint of any lag. This phone is very snappy and looking at the used and available RAM, the management looks good. Whenever I've checked there has always been over a gig of RAM free. Why do I keep looking? Because I've come from a Galaxy S3 which was crippled by its measly RAM. This is nothing like that I'm please to say. It looks premium and feels premium too. I can't think of anything else to trump it at the moment. Go get it!

The One is a Smartphone and not a phablet like the Note 2. If you want a top end Smartphone this is the One to get. Love the screen clarity and music playback. Will be using the my One a lot for music playback. Battery life so far better than I expected. Got through a work day with 60% left. I replaced the standard launcher with Nova and I am much happier now.

true! optimism, denial on my part maybe maybe?...

My personal verdict: From a scale from 0 to 10 I give a 10000
Superfast, beautiful design, good materials used, best-looking user interface (I even like it more than vanilla android), awesome stereo speakers, perfect screensize for me. Also important is 2GB Ram (1GB is out of date, apps get closed in the background too fast) and LTE...yes, there are some phones also with 2GB Ram and LTE but for me the HTC One is the best one of them, so I chose it as my next phone ^^ Never have been so satisfied by a phone

Screen: In a word, stunning. Once or twice in the past 2 weeks I have almost gone into a daydream like state looking at this thing.
Audio: I have never heard audio of such a quality from any mobile device. It literally makes people ask "what is that". If I had one small complaint, it would be that the lowest volume level is not low enough. The granularity of the incremental volume levels is too coarse. Maybe 24 levels and not just 10-12.
Battery: I have been pleasantly surprised by the battery life. I get through a day fine with it. If you play Real Racer a lot or wish to make a blockbuster movie with the thing then battery will not last as long.
Camera: Superb for a phone. If you wish to print out your shots then you will not be able to get higher resolution images out of it. This is not the job of a camera though. The video and snaps are fantastic I have found. HDR is pretty good also.
Speed: It's fast. Yep.
If you are getting this thing soon... if you have it on order... you will really like it. It just oozes quality. It just feels like a supremely well made piece of hardware. Oh... it looks amazing also.
Ok, they are having some trouble getting this thing out of the factories to the stores... but when they do... people will forget the frustration. It is superb.

How is the overall UI experience? is it TRULY smooth/lag free? not smooth like people claim EVERY Android phone is (ok thats a stretch). I have yet to own a 100% lag free Android phone. Some pretty close, some smooth in many places, but not a single one would I call "lag free". That includes the Nexus 4, Note II, S3, etc... AOSP/TW/didnt matter.
Aosp on Note II was probably the closest but it had its bugs .

Had mine for a week now, I am a heavy user (not games, but lots of music /Internet/twitter /texts.
No lag at all yet.
I have had the nexus 4 and it even beats that and that was quick.
As someone said earlier, this is the nearest to the ios lag free feeling from any android phone. (even ios lags sometimes)
For me the only thing is the camera which I have not made my mind up about yet, I have had some amazing results but also some poor (probably more good than bad though) I need more time with the camera but overall I think it will be acceptable.
I have had a lot of phones and I have to say this is in the top 3 and I think it will be my number 1 but need more time with it before it gains that honour

The One is smooth. But lack of smoothness is Google issue as the first version of Butter was better but they changed for some reason. It is also faster than the Note 2.

This phone marks the end of the race in terms of screen quality. The camera is excellent if you have the time to make a quick couple of adjustments before you shoot. Blinkfeed is a consumer orientated gimmik aimed at users who have never heard of flip board. Lag is a thing of the past. Battery life is about what you expect from a top end smart phone, you'll see the day out with average use.
Speakers are the best of any device yet, just don't expect HiFi. Sense and indeed the initial stock and custom ROMs are very embryonic. I.e. when paranoid android breaks for this device it will open up a whole new world.
From a phone enthusiast who started with a Phillips savvy and one day traded a sony Z for a HTC canary.

As a One X owner who intended to keep his phone for the full 2 years, I originally didn't have much interest in this phone...but the build quality is striking, and my One X is definitely feeling the limitations of its 1 GB of RAM.
Really looking forward to trying this out when it finally gets released in the US.

Here's my review after five days of ownership. Please remember where I make a statement below like 'x is better than y' it is purely my subjective opinion and i understand and realise others will not echo my thoughts. This is a reworked and updated review from the one I posted on Phandroid a few days ago.
This is my first HTC phone, having currently got an iPhone 5 and a Samsung Galaxy S2 which has been replaced by the HTC. I did have a Galaxy S3 but thought it was a POS.
Battery
Wow, i'm impressed. I ran it alongside my iPhone 5 and both had emails pushed to it at the same time. I received and replied to about five sms messages on the iPhone and about fifteen on the HTC and had maybe twenty emails to both devices over that time. I took them both off charge on Monday morning at about midday and the iPhone died at 11pm on the Tuesday night. The HTC didn't die until approximately 5pm on the Wednesday although it did have power saver on for the last fifteen percent. I am a light to moderate user of any phone and I am truly impressed that the battery on the HTC is a real stormer. For instance, I took the phone off charge one hour and twenty two minutes ago and it is still sitting on 100%. This battery is way better than my iPhone and that was impressive in itself. I couod not be happier with this result. I don't care what any of the reviews say, for me this battery is brilliant and that's what matters.
Build materials and Build quality
It's spot on. No gaps, no dead pixels, no dents, dings or scratches. Perfect. It feels great in the hand, has a pleasing weight to it; not too light, not too heavy. It looks and feels a million dollars. The aluminium is beautifully designed and the volume buttons sit flush with the side of the phone and have been cut in a concentric circle pattern, which is one of those little touches that shows that someone has really thought about this phone when they designed it. Sometimes I miss the power button with my huge spade-claw hands but that is more to do with me getting used to the power button being on that side (remember, I am an iPhone user so the power button on the top is perfectly natural to me).
Screen
Dear god! The best screen I have ever seen on a smartphone! No ghosting, no bleed, no tears and videos are crisp, clear and extremely high quality. I am very very impressed with the screen. The finger glide action is crystal smooth and the viewing angles are actually very good indeed. At the moment, colours seem vivid. I gather from other reviews that the screen colours look slightly washed out against other phones. If that is the case, you will not notice unless you are looking for it. For me, they are perfectly fine. Darks are dark and lights are light and all the colours in between seem rich and vivid; so I can't complain.
Beats Audio
Loud or what? Incredibly clear and distortion-free no matter whether you are playing Mussorgsky or Megadeth (I tried). Forget about booting up that phone in a quiet room like a bedroom at night or a library though! Try as I might, I couldn't get it to distort at all, no matter what I played through it.
Sense 5
Very good indeed. Easily better than my experiences with stock Touchwiz on my Samsung S3 and S2. Very smooth scrolling and the icons look sharp and have obviously had a rework for the new high-def screen. I thought I would dislike the vertically scrolling App drawer but it feels fine to use. I wish I could put more icons on my homescreen though but that will require a launcher. Maybe i'll do that in the not too distant future. Blinkfeed was interesting for a while but I found it very cluttered so I have removed all feeds from it. I will try it out again in a few days once the initial small-child-at-Christmas feeling has subsided a bit. As I mentioned in another post somewhere, Blinkfeed would be miles better if we could add in our own feeds or mail accounts. I would have no issues in having that as my home screen then. Until that time, it has been relegated to another screen and emptied of feeds.
The stock UI has some great touches and the various inbuilt apps are lovely and uncluttered to use. there isn't the sense that HTC have tried to cram as much in whether it will fit or not. Again, to me it looks like real thought has been given to the apps they have in the UI and they haven't tried to dazzle users with a function that looks cool but will never practically be used by 95% of the populace (i'm looking at you Samsung 'Popup Play' feature).
Camera
I am not David Bailey, so I don't care if my photos are not the best in the world. I have an expensive DSLR if I want to take exceptional quality pictures anyway. The camera on the HTC is perfectly adequate for my needs. It's not the best out there for a smartphone, sure, but it is perfectly serviceable and it is far from the worst. Low light photos are great and they easily capture more light than my naked eye can see. Zoe is fun to use and I have already found it useful for capturing 'that perfect shot' and discarding the rest. The time from tapping the camera app icon to taking an auto-focus shot is approximately one second, which is astonishing and way quicker than I was expecting.
Afterthoughts: - HTC Sync Manager
I'm new to the HTC and found this to be a very crappy piece of software that tries to be smart and immediately started trying to add in over twelve terabytes of movies and music (yes you read right). I imagine I would probably have had to come back sometime late next week once it had finished. I dislike the way it tries to intelligently scan for all your media. I have a lot of media across my RAID and NAS and so I have had to manually delete everything from HTC Sync Manager as there was no easy way that I could find to do it en masse. It does however allow you to port an iPhone backup straight to your HTC which for me was an absolute godsend.

I'm happy to report that no, there is no lag on my device with live wallpaper enabled.

Wow! So this phone basically sounds about as amazing as I keep reading online. But the one thing I keep hearing about is the camera.. I'm going from an EVO 4G LTE (so basically a One X)... Is the camera quality going to be better or worse? From what I hear it's hit or miss but on average would you say it's an improvement?
I mean I really only use my camera for Instagram pics so I'm not really expecting 100% professional quality but I just want to make sure it's not a decrease in quality from my phone.
I just want a release date for Sprint now

The screen is great quality not as good as the galaxy s6 but it is close second. The speed is great on this phone i don't experience any lag. The camera to me isbetter than any phone out including the iPhone and galaxy s6. Battery life gets me thru a day...i take out off charger at 7 am and when i get home around 6:30 it's no less than 40% and thats with emails coming in all day, few calss, surfing the web and some game play. I dont have any heat problems unless im charging it and playing a game.

Great phone minus touch screen issues. Phantom touches are a nuisance. Especially while lying flat.

Below Average for High End Phone
My last phone was a Note 3 so this is what I'm comparing the G4 to. Had the G4 for 4 weeks now.
1. Heats up compared to the note.
--When using Waze for 80 mile trips the phone heats up like a frying pan.
--Never noticed any heat issues with the Note but always have a hot phone if using internet for longer than 5 min. with the G4 (to be fair I had a silicone case on the Note and never noticed any heat issues. Could have been the case not letting me feel heat?)
2. Battery inconsistant.
--With a 65% charge I used Waze for 1 3/4 hours yesterday and the battery was at 0% charge (turned itself off). Today had 70% charge for return trip using Waze and had 45% battery life left at end of trip. Note 3 was also unpredictable with battery life. Could go 2 days on lite usage and then other times with same usage would have 30% left at end of 1st day. I find that a re-boot usually solves the battery issue on both phones.
3. Screen
--G4 is nice for most tasks. Sucks when watching HBO-Go, Netflix.
--Note 3 had better blacks and much more enjoyable to watch movies on. (to sum it up, G4 is like watching a LCD TV & Note 3 was like a Plasma TV. I have both tv's at home and the plasma picture blows away the LCD tv's. Maybe just my preferance.)
4. Love the 2 tap to wake the phone and the rear toggle just feels right for one handed operation. Big improvement vs non LG phones.
5. Camera
--Not enough usage to do a complete comparison yet. So far the pictures and video look good on the phone but havent downloaded to the computer to compare with my Note 3 pictures yet. I have noticed that the 8x zoom on the G4 makes the pictures look washed out. The Note only had 4x zoom which looked great in day light. The G4 night/low light pictures do look better than the Note 3.
6. Sound.
Volume goes much louder on the G4(a plus). Speaker phone is better on the G4. Music is kind of tinny sounding if the volume is to high vs the Note 3.
7.Build quality.
The Note 3 feels like a better built phone. Note is heavier than G4 and feels more substantial. I do like the fact that the G4 is lighter and smaller than the Note. Easier to hold one handed and not as heavy in the belt holster as the Note.
That's it for now.

I've had no battery issues thus far, Waze or otherwise. Goes a longtime on a charge. But I'm not a heavy user. A glance here and there, 20 emails, 20 texts a day. No video watching.
You'd feel the heat in a silicon case. But mine was ugly on delivery. All kind of issues. I did a reset and that has cleared up most issue.
There are still some intermittencies with WiFi Calling (T-Mob). But usually a toggle of WiFi will fix that.
I like the build Q of my HTC M7 better as well as the stability. But this was a better deal, and unfortunately better featured, otherwise I would have taken a M9.
Perhaps next year there will be a M10 (or MX) and I'll jump.
But I think as phones become more sophisticated, the carriers get more boxed in by the manufacturers.
OBTW, fave feature is the Paste Bin of the G4. Very smart.

I have been using P10 Plus (6/128 GB) for a day, and I am trying really hard to like it. I haven't found all the good/bad points yet but the list of bad things is already kind of outweighing the list of good things. Were my expectations really just too high?
These are really just my opinions, and you are free to disagree. Even I might change my mind if there are really good reasons to!
I might as well add that paid about $860 (in Norway) for my P10 Plus while Galaxy S8+ costs "slightly more" (about $1,000). I just feel like I got so little in return for the price I paid.
I have to decide by tomorrow anyway whether to keep this device or return it, and I am currently leaning towards returning it.

Good things:
Responsive fingerprint reader on the front side, unlocks screen pretty much instantly.
Has a nice shape (like an iPhone 7). No annoying sharp edges except at the bottom holes for connectors, where I support the device with my pinky finger.
Lots of camera settings.
My device luckily has UFS 2.1.
Pretty good WiFi speed (measured more than 200 Mbps during internet speed test).
The DAC's quality is okay (not very good). A little bit of noise when using my sensitive in-ear headphones, but it's very bearable. This is only a "good" point because it's an upgrade from my old phone.
Bad things:
I already found some sluggish menus on day one.
Somewhat bad performance when taking photos and shooting videos, even playing back videos I captured is somewhat choppy.
The device gets pretty hot during "normal" (in my opinion light) use, and really hot while charging and during "heavy" (in my opinion normal) use.
Seems like the battery drains more quickly than I expected as well (larger battery does not make it much or any better than P10) so that I still need to bring an extra battery with me if I intend to use mobile data and GPS.
The swiping on the fingerprint reader is a bit of a hit and miss because it might register a tap which means "back" (or exit).
Photos taken and saved as JPEG look bad. RAW images look quite a bit better but it takes seconds to save each image.
My GFXBench result is pretty bad compared to other devices.
Nitpicking:
The edge of the screen protector is so annoying I want to take it off. Note: If you do it, you might want to apply oleophobic coating.
I wish the fingerprint sensor indentation was a bit less deep, because it makes the swiping motion feel less comfortable. The screen protector is probably most of the reason though.
I was never able to transfer app data (only apps themselves) from my old device using any method suggested by Huawei. The thing that did work was a backup/restore using adb.
USB 2 is pretty slow after getting used to USB 3.
The device sometimes thinks that I am using a knuckle gesture when I am using the tip of my finger.

sometimes very laggy also. And some apps not compatible with the camera.

Turns out that I am stuck with this device due to the shop's no-return policy on phones. I might as well begin training my mind to like the device. Won't feel guilty about rooting and trying custom ROMs now either.

Camera send not so good to me, maybe I don't know how to use it

Pretty much this phone is unusable due these 2 things, battery life is poor as AF, and from my perspective, Huawei messed up EMUI 5.1 really hard.
Probably an update would fix it, but we don't have ETA yet.
I will return back the P10 Plus because I think is not worth it, and I will buy a Mate 9 Pro that is virtually the same device, but battery life is so much better.

@nougn Which firmware are you on? In terms of battery life the phone may not be the best, but from my experience its also not bad either. 6 hours DOT should be possible unless you are a heavy gamer. However what you said about the device getting hot that does sound like it may have faulty hardware, I'd be careful with that. You should grab an app monitoring CPU and battery temperatures. If you come to the conclusion that the device is getting warmer than it should I'd contact Huawei on the matter. What I find most bizarre is that you say the performance is laggy at times, I never experienced even just the slightest lag no matter what I do, it is smooth as silk in every situation. Maybe another indication for faulty hardware.......? On a side note: the price you paid seems really high, a lot of commercial seller on ebay offer it for a lot less than that... but anyhow if you really wanted to get rid of the device you could always sell it on ebay or something, no? So you're never actually "stuck" with a device

This device always works in high temperatures, and is really easy for it to get hot. Use the camera more than 3 minutes and it will start to feel uncomfortable on hand.
I had the same experience, poor battery life and device most of the time hot. I checked the temperatures and is around 30°C on stand by, and after some minutes of WhatsApp and news, it was reaching 40°C, which is not normal at all, when my previous phone was around 18°C on stand by and 25°C in normal usage.
I'm used to stick with cold devices and is one of the first things I noticed when I used this device, and is a pretty common problem among many users. Most of the people would say that is only "warm", but I had the Mate 9 as well, with the same specs, and trust me, it was an ice cube the whole time.

One has to keep in mind though that temperatures like that are impossible to reach in summer (unless its a very cold summer), the device can never be cooler than the air surrounding it

Well, I'm talking about my room, which has air conditioning, and I just bought the P10 Plus and today I returned it back.
Problem solved, I got my money back, and I'm trying to see which phone to get, but pretty much I don' t like what I see in the market now.

The standby drain is crazy and as you said the phone gets really hot when using the camera more than a few minutes.
Also one more problem is when the phone reach certain temperature the wide aperture effect in the gallery will stop working..
It's a pity since I like this phone in many ways and the camera is great.
But if Huawei don't fix it (very) soon i may be "forced" to sell it and get another one..
Almost regret that I sold my old Mate 8..

Today I returned my P10 Plus, for me there's no excuse to pay so much for a phone that has basic problems.
I will see if I get a Mate 9 Pro or any other phone, but I'm kind of picky when getting a new device.

Sorry for the late response. I have been traveling for the past few days.
I decided to bring this phone with me on vacation to Japan where it is currently very humid and it feels like 33+ degrees C (91+ degrees F) in the sun. Trying to use mobile data, GPS and Google Maps is not exactly pleasant for my hand. The worst part is trying to take some photos because the device's temperature gets uncomfortably high for my hand. Will try to measure the temperatures next time I go out!
I am also really glad that I brought an extra battery, although the output of the extra battery (per port) is just enough (2.4A) to keep the device's battery percentage stable while using mobile data and GPS (goes up when idle).
I also guessed hardware defect, but it now seems like I am not the only one with problems. I really hope that Huawei can fix some things in the software, including the heat issue.

My point is to raise awareness about the different screen technologies, because I've seen more than one comparison where the two devices are said to use the same screen (probably because of same size and res.), but that is plain WRONG!

I understand your point, but still having AMOLED display means nothing in 2017. You can see the HTC U11 with LCD and has pretty goddamn battery life. You can have the normal Mate 9 with IPS and also has a really nice battery life. Right now screen technologies are really mature and it doesn't influence much (or at all) what kind is on a phone.

Came from S8, I used it for a couple of months and now Im using P10 Plus.
Im more than happy now with P10+.

I have had my P10 Plus for about 2 months now and I can tell you I get around 5 hours of SOT with 1-2 of gaming. The battery stays at 100% for about 15 minutes regardless what I do and then begins to drop. Somehow form 70% downwards it starts to really slow its discharge rate. You might worry about this but the honest truth is that I can make it at the end of each day (around midnight) with around 15-20% battery left. For me this is more than enough as I recharge my phone every night.
I would suggest you stop worrying about your phone dying on you and just start using it. Also use Phone Manager once a day and you'll be good to go.

Question Thinking about getting the ZenFone 8, is it worth it?

I am thinking about switching phones from my OnePlus 9. I like my OP9, but it is very glitchy for what it is supposed to be and really the only thing that impresses me is the WarpCharge feature. I am very fond of smaller phones, such as the ZenFone 8. I haven't purchased an ASUS device at all before, not even a computer.
Who has it and do you think it is worth even considering? My daily use consists of social media, internet browsing, and watching videos. It is very rarely that I download a game and play it on mobile. I also prefer somewhat swift updates, but have been an avid Motorola user before and was perfectly fine with their update timings.

I'm also in the same boat however 'm using Nord now..not very much satisfied with it..Oneplus really lost its glory now a days . Also 'm looking for compact phones..ZF8 seems to be perfect..would like to hear from real users..

I'm on the same boat except I'm using Xiaomi Mi 9T. Zenfone 8 looks like a perfect phone but I heard the thermals are bad and it gets hot af, like really hot.

I have it and the only down side is standby drain. Even after a few system updates my drain is about 50-100% higher than my op6. It's gotten better since the first version, but still not great.
I love it's form factor, GUI fluidity, Asus apps are great.
I haven't played any games so I can't really say anything about thermals.. never felt any temperature build-up.

The screen isn't the best and the battery drains a bit too quick, but I'd say it's worth it. I like the stock ROM. The power button can be customised to perform two different actions, Game Genie shows CPU, GPU, battery, temperature and FPS, Optiflex speeds up apps and reduces battery usage. Also, didn't expect to find system performance modes, dt2w, dt2s or gestures, which, if drawn while the screen is off, launch apps.

This opinion is very subjective and quite off.
The screen isn't the best? Maybe there are literally few phones with better screens but it's definitely among the very top. No idea what is wrong with it.
Battery drain? I get easily 6h SOT and whole day use. No issues at all. 8h during night eats me like 5-8 percent. The good is that all my smartwatches and earbuds are very stable and I get no disconnections like on Huawei flagship phones.
I can confirm that coming video in bright sun in 30 Celsius gets the phone hot, very hot. I think that's normal. And it's waterproof so I've just taken it underwater for 5s and it was back to normal.
If you can live with the cut out camera - this phone is brilliant.
I was using LG V30 and Huawei Mate 20 before this and I see no downsides. Everything is better than on those two. I like them all.

When I said "not the best" I had two things in mind. First the backlight issue at 60 and 120 Hz. As for the second one, few days ago my Zf8 was on a desk together with my previous phone (Xperia 5 II). I think I had some web pages open on both at the time because the screens were mostly white. When I looked at them while standing and almost at a flat angle, I immediately noticed that the Xperia's screen was white as a sheet of paper, Zenfone's wasn't. I assumed the Xperia's screen can be viewed without distortion at wider angles.
I played one game which is locked at 30 FPS, CPU and GPU usage was 10-30%, temp stayed at 36-37C. Will try something more demanding and see if it can go over 40C during the weekend.
Edit: idle drain 0.5%/h, but Franco Kernel Manager shows 0.28% for some reason

Right now i have a OnePlus 9 Pro and as i really like it I'm kind of done with big smartphones.
As i had the Pixel 5 before i was thinking about going back and then the ZenFone 8 came to my attention.
It's damn ugly but that's something that can be changed with a case or skin.
I'm in doubt about the camera's compared to the Pixel 5 but the reviews I've seen so far seems quite good, not the best but good and comparable to the OnePlus 9.
I also read that Asus's update policy is not very reliable.
Anyone can give their opinion about this parts?
Everything else about this phone seems really good!

After using the zenfone 8 and Pixel 5 I went for the Pixel 5 because of the insanely better battery life than on the zenfone 8
Zenfone 8 had a slightly better camera with gcam but overall I was more impressed with the Pixel 5

It is true that other phones may have better battery, the Mate 20 I have is much better but at the cost of unreliable smart devices connection.
I can't get 2 days of my normal usage out of any phone. If I go hiking and just have the phone with me the Zenfone will also last 2-3 days easily. For me 1 day is the requirement and Zenfone does it easily.
The cameras are really good and with gcam and the right settings in there it gives great, real to life pictures. The super wide camera has the same sensor as Pixel 5. The main and selfie are even better and newer.
And the main thing - here in Poland the Pixel is 290USD more expensive than Asus. At the same price I'd probably buy the Pixel as it is a more established brand and has better support.
People write here that ZF8 can be bad at getting updates but the initial month had 4 updates. Can't see anything wrong here.
If the ZF9 will be the same size and gets the flip camera I will 100% buy it.

Pixel has a different sensor for the ultra wide. For the others i can't comment on that but it seems they are at least very close to each when it comes to picture quality.

The wide camera sensor in ZF8 is the same as main in Pixel. At least I read that.

Anything that runs the CPU/GPU high. You have to enable performance mode (or custom mode for max performance/temp limit) to let it get hot though. Case mitigates its feel to an extent.
And it can get burning hot, try it on any 3d game.
