Hello,
I've been trying to figure this out for days now and I can't seem to find any permanent solution. My Nexus 6 on Sprint (Android L 5.0 / LRX21O / Up to Date PRL) 50%-75% of the time sends duplicate SMS messages to recipients. On my end I see one SMS message outbound and it sends without issue. On the other end, people will get the same message one to six times. I've seen it myself on a separate Sprint phone and a Verizon phone.
From what I can tell, sometimes updating the profile helps for a few minutes and that's it. It doesn't matter if I uninstall/disable the stock Google Messenger or Hangouts. This issue happens in every single 3rd party SMS messenger I've used. The only time I've got the problem to stop is if I force 3G service and not the Global or LTE settings. Strangely enough, If I'm on LTE, and I switch to WiFi, the issue remains. If I force 3G and then go on WiFi, the issue is gone.
I've tried uninstalling certain applications that come stock with the phone.. I've tried not updating any applications. I've done factory resets (and I sent an SMS to test without doing 1 update) and it still duplicated. I returned the phone and got another phone. Same issue. On the Sprint end, they changed some settings on my phone and had me reset the network connection via the phone *#*# etc. menu. That fixed the issue, and it lasted 24 hours. Upon either a reboot, or perhaps just a power cycle, the problem returned.
Any ideas as to why this is happening? I have zero Data issues. Hangouts works fine. Youtube, Gmail, Chrome etc are all super fast without issue.
Thank you in advance.

I always just thought this was an issue on Sprints side and not the phone itself. I just started with Sprint myself when I picked up the Nexus, prior to this I had Verizon.
My girlfriend however has been with Sprint forever and no matter what ROM or phone she had, this issue would pop up from time to time.
Now that I'm with Sprint she's told me a few times that she's gotten duplicate messages from me. It seems to happen when we are in spotty service areas from what I can tell. I haven't even bothered calling Sprint like you have though... I just chalked it up as Sprint service is sketchy.

The issue here is that it's not popping up from time to time...it's pretty consistent. I've been with Sprint for at least 7 years and have never ran into the issue until this phone. My prior phone was a Nexus 5...and I have a galaxy s3 here which I can't duplicate the issue on.
We all need to complain to Sprint so they either fix it on their side, or put pressure on Google to fix it on their own side.

This phone is really flaky for me with SMS. Doesn't want to send when I am on wifi. My wife did get a duplicate from me one night when I was trying to figure out why it won;t send when wifi is on but she hasn't mentioned it since. ( I am on Sprint)

What SMS application are you using? Did you install any 3rd part SMS applications?

Yep, this has been happening to me. My girlfriend started complaining she was getting my text 2x-3x for each message. She is on T-Mo, I'm on Sprint. Tested with a few coworkers on different providers and only 1 out 4 received it more than once and they are on Verizon. Rebooted, tried updating PRL and data profile. She hasn't complained about it doing it anymore but we will see. Super frustrating

I've tried every combination you can think of:
1. Google Messenger as default with and without Hangouts installed.
2. Hangouts as default with and without Google Messenger installed.
3. SMS Messenger AOSP, ChompSMS, 8sms, Textra, Handcent, all with and without Google Messenger and or Hangouts installed.
I've tried forcing 1x, updating PRL and Profile and then going back to LTE. Same issue. Multiple Hard Resets and Data Network Resets. Only ONCE the Sprint support person did something on their end ("Changed a number") and out of nowhere the duplicates stopped. But it only lasted 1 day while using Google Messenger.
This happened to me with my G3 on Att, it just stopped one day and I still don't know what started it

Lol. Yeah. Doesn't hurt. I'm on the phone with Sprint again and they said they are making a ticket with their engineers.
Just picked mine up today from sprint. My buddy who is also on sprint made me aware that he was getting repeat sms from me already. It's funny because I would always complain that I was getting them from him before I jumped to sprint. He's on a LG G2 though.

Don't get me wrong.. the phone is absolutely amazing. I love it. I can't go back to my Moto X, which to me was one of the best Android phones ever made. Again, what people don't understand is this is a REAL issue. People are very quick to say that "bad service" caused it. We're all smart enough to know that if you have bad service, 1 or 2 duplicates can happen, on occasion. Not repeatedly in a full service area or on WiFi.
As an Update:
Everything Sprint tried has failed. However, my original debug information holds true:
1. If the phone is set to 3G mode only: The problem is SOLVED.
2. If the phone is on WiFi, AFTER being set to 3G mode only: The problem is SOLVED.
3. If the phone is set to LTE mode only: The problem REMAINS, unless you are in a no LTE service area and revert to 3G or less.
4. If the phone is on WiFi, AFTER being set to LTE mode only: The problem REMAINS.

She's already complained of getting my messages 4x a piece this morning, so I'm thinking positive!

I just posted my issue.
Hi,
Just got the verizon S8 a week ago and this has been driving me nuts. When my gf calls, her name doesn't come up. Only displays her number. My contacts are on my gmail account. All other contacts i have show up. She has an iphone and her name showed up on my old s5. Her phone is already set to display caller ID and so is mine. I spend like a few hours aday trying to troubleshoot this.. No luck whatsowever. Weird thing is, sometimes when she calls, her number appears with a ;oli=62 behind it. Example: 714-555-5555;oli=62. I googled oli (originating line information) but it makes no sense to me..
Things i've tried already:
1) resync gmail contacts
2) deleted her contact on gmail/phone/etc
3) readded her contact to phone internal storage and also gmail again
4) tried in safe mode to see if a application is blocking it
5) rebooted phone of course
6) re-adding her contact info with her data deleted from gmail
7) called verizon support
8) and last but not least.. reset/restored original s8 to factory
HELP.. i was gonna try to exchange the phone for another s8 but i really don't think that might be the issue.. i tried researching IPHONE issues with caller ID not showing up but all her settings seems correct.
Thanks in advance.
Same...
I'm having the same issue on my Note 5 after updating to Nougat. I'm having the issue with only one friend, no one else.
I found a temp fix. Go to your a computer and log into your Google contacts. Add that weird number. Example. 555-555-5555;oli=62 to the contact along with the regular number. That should fix it.
Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
Same issue on my new s8+, adding the number plus ;oli=62 on the Google contacts via editing from your Google contacts from googles website works great, thanks for the work around. The only problem I have with these Samsung devices is the slow ass updates. Their still on 7.0 even though 7.1.2 has been released for months
Me too. I have a Note 5 on VZW. Pretty sure it started after the Nougat update as well. And also for only one contact. I know I could add those characters to the contact info, but I want to know why the heck it happens for only one contact. Found this info (not that it cleared up jack for me, lol) - https://www.dialogic.com/webhelp/IMG1010/10.5.3/WebHelp/oli_isdn_sip.htm
i have this same problem. It is on a S6 and has been happening since before the Nougat update. It only happens to me for 2 contacts 1 full time and the other off and on. If i look at the missed calls screen afterwards the phone displays the correct contact just during the incoming call is it not displaying.
the problem actually stopped for me around the time of the roll-out and then started back up a week or so later.
The only connection that i can find is that both of them use Family mobile (T-mobile) service.
Last time i researched this problem, i found the same problem a few years ago with T-mobile and VOIP phones but never found a solution
its the feds
Are you just being a douche or are you serious?

This is the same problem I'm having. I have the S8 on Verizon the two contacts whose numbers don't work are both on T-Mobile. One of the numbers it happens to constantly and has the xxx-xxx-xxxx;oli=62 while the other number does it intermittently w/o the extra's at the end.
"Me To" Bus
Ok, I'm a "Me to" I blocked all phone calls except for people in my contacts, because of all the Spam calls.
But my best friend gets blocked because of this problem.
I have a Samsung S4 Note, Also using Verizon. And google contacts.
I'm going to save him only under Verizon Contacts. And see if that does anything.
He is using a Blu Phone and also using T-Moble.
Anyone have any idea's?
Jim
my phone just started doing this when I installed a reminder ap. I uninstalled it, and it stopped. Hope this helps.
Is anyone having the issue of not receiving text messages from different people on T-Mobile S8? There are several people that text and I don't receive the text messages. My wife is in the same network as I'm with an iPhone 7 Plus, a friend of mine in the T-Mobile network as well with an iPhone 7. A coworker in the sprint network with an iPhone 5S and a friend of my on T-Mobile with an S8. Sometimes I don't receive their messages. My Friend with the S8 sometimes doesn't receive mines. Anyone has this issue? I have several weeks with this issue and it's frustrating.

For the past few weeks I have been reading about text messages not being delivered/received on different networks. Some Google Pixel phone users face this as well and google said that this will be fixed in November's update. I haven't noticed any issues with my text messages. Looks like you have a mixture of Android and iOS devices and these usually didn't play well together especially in group chats I know some iPhone users would temporarily turn off iMessage to have a proper group conversation.

Thank you for the speedy reply. I'm not doing group conversation. They're individual text messages. It's random that's the worse. It can be working fine and then it just breaks. I have tried with the Samsung Stock Messaging app and the Google Messages App as well.
I am having the same problem. I tried clearing messing app cache and system cache, but this has not solved the problem for me. I am considering a factory reset next.
I have an unlocked s8+ on verizon and I also am intermittently not receiving texts. Co-workers and I tested it yesterday and I was intermittently not receiving texts from a windows phone on sprint, a unlocked note 8 on verizon and an iPhone 6s+ on verizon. I would receive a majority of the texts, but once in a while I would miss one... Issue seems to be with my s8+.

I am factory reseting now. One frustrating thing about this problem is that I won't know if it fixed it or not unless someone tells me they texted me and I didn't reply.
BTW, I am pretty sure Samsung customer service employees don't know anything. They wanted me to send my phone in for repair without even trying any troubleshooting first.
I am so frustrated with this problem. Its a basic feature of any smartphone to be able to text and expect you would receive one, but not the case. Mine goes from never receiving or sending at times, to getting multiple copies of the same text. Way to go Samsung to destroy a great product. Problem is they haven't acknowledged or done anything about it.
Same on S7 edge
TLDR: same issue on my Tmo S7 Edge last few weeks. Not just S8 problem.
Full: So interesting - I came here to look at S8 reviews etc, just dropped my S7 edge and busted my glass. Thinking about upgrade to S8 vs fixing glass for $275, partially because of my intermittent text issues on S7. Samy symptoms. Just with a few contacts I regularly communicate with, mix of Android and iPhone, mix of carriers. No way to know I've missed one until they ask if I received. They get 'sent' reciept like normal no matter what. No apparent impact on my ability to send - they get all of mine. Just sporadic recieving problems . Tried clearing cache, switching SMS apps, resetting APN, etc...but no luck. Factory reset is next. Then have to decide on what to do next...S8 or Pixel 2, or fix screen.
Same problem with mine and my wife's S7s. It's sproadic, not related to carrier or phones, or even locations. It's very frustrating that TMobile won't acknowledge there's a major issue here that is affecting a lot of people.
I used to have the problem as well. Then I dumped all SMS apps I used to use, and went back to ORIGINAL app that came with the ROM, and problem disappeared.. So my question is - Do you have messages not received/Sent with the ORIGINAL built in app?
Also - Oreo Beta can be downloaded today. Seems like Google have a fix (to whatever the bug was) anyways.
Same problem with S8 on Sprint. It's not a carrier issue, it's Samsung (or Android). There is no help. Nothing from Samsung or Sprint. I've missed so many important messages, at least 6 a day. At least my fiance knows about the problem, and if I don't respond she'll shoot me a screenshot showing me what I missed. Until she started that, I had no clue how many texts I was actually missing. I've been to Sprint, on the phone with Sprint, on the phone with Samsung. They're all useless and won't do anything. I've already done factory reset, changed from Google messages back to stock, turned off all entrance enhanced features etc, cleared cache, changed network mode from automatic to LTE/CDMA. Nothing helps. The problem continues. So we're all stuck with a broken product until Google/Samsung fixes the problem. Who knows when that will be. I'm highly angered about this problem, it's BS. I'm trying to get Sprint to let me out of my lease without fees, but so far that's going nowhere. So I'm paying for a phone that is broken.

I use a 3rd party, not sure about the stock one. I think the app is going to sleep and missing texts.
Same problem here. Been going on for months. Completed the following: Formatted phone, deleted txt message DB, used stock sms app, and used already activated sim to test. I just activated a new sim and will see what happens.
It might be the sleep mode or saving battery issue.
Do messages come through with wifi?
Had the problem with samsung app but not with Google messages.

If you are not receiving text messages from iPhone owners it's because the iPhone owner doesn't have their phone set up right. There is a setting on the iPhone in imessages that has sms and a check box. That is for people that don't have imessage, they check that box and anyone who has Android phone will now get text message.
I have both iPhone 8 & Galaxy S8.

"READ Tmobile acknowledge Native message app is corrupt. Don't update Says TMobile
It seems that if you read online on T-Mobile forms in other areas people are not receiving all their text messages if not 10 to 50% of them are missing people are finding this out by logging into T-Mobile digits and same messages they never got through the native messaging app after the 8.0 update.
I noticed this when I did not receive messages for a good while until I put my SIM card into a Galaxy S8 and 20 to 30 messages popped up that were pre conversation topics from the past days before after talking to T-Mobile and digits support team they are being told to replace the device one time and Advising customer to keep the Nougat software until a fix ia found or until further notice this issue seems to be tied to the Z2 only and Oreo update just wanted to throw this out there as a pre warning the alternative solution the tech told me is that you can use a different messaging app but who's to say you'll ever know if you're not getting all your messages .
It evidently seems to be affecting incoming messages alternatively at your own choice maybe Nougat could be flashed back "Not sure" but this is a real life issue for this phone . If you want to be certain and surprised login to T-Mobile digits activate it and see what messages that you have not got

What about it ? Wether on wifi calling or not this is a message issue acknowledged and very pronounced In many ways . It's simple to see with a few trial and error tests regardless of wifi
Or LTE Data
Seeing all your messages show up on TMO digits comparing them to messages you've got or never got .....putting a SIM card in a different phone and seeing multiple messages pop up that have still been trying to push through that are tied to specific time line conversations. TMobile literally already acknowledges this it's just nobody is realizing it because they're not expecting messages that they're actually missing from people.
Feel free to test it if you would like have multiple people text you wait for it to come through not saying it affects everybody T-Mobile did tell me that they already have a ticket out for it and it's software related to this particular phone.
On top of the SMS of all things is one of the most critical uses of a phone .
Just trying to shed light on a rising issue that most would never be aware of .
Because all Android phones ship with settings set to wifi preferred wich leads to dropped calls and unsent messages after setting up a home wifi. And if you have no sim installed your obviously using wifi calling wich is most definitely not as dependable as volte.

I'll look into that....but if your not on wifi calling "connected" to a wifi network you would still be using volte right ? This is happening to people conversating anywhere Mobily in a vehicle not on wifi. Messages for instance with my brother whereas I never got a reply in which I would have came through after I put my SIM in my s8.
People are seeing ungotten messages in TMobile digits.
I don't really care i was just looking out for the community here with a potential problem hindering, and T-Mobile tech support made acknowledgement about it . I highly doubt a community across United States all at once is screwing up by keeping WiFi preferred on.
You're only going to be using WiFi calling if you're connected to an actual at work under that settings menu otherwise you would be using cellular by default just like it says to choose below that
You're only going to use Wifi calling if you're connected to a WiFi network otherwise you're going to use cellular default which is the same as being on cellular by default correct me if I'm wrong
Can you post a link to the discussion? I can't find anything after searching for a while.

How this has not made it to xda is beyond me but it is real situation
It's really not a good feeling to really not know all the messages you should be getting that you're not especially the ones that you're not expecting the scenario is playing out just like it shows in these support forums and with myself.
It's like not "Some messages are blocked in a limbo status never reaching the target device
Like myself you could stick a SIM card potentially in another phone and see stuff that pops up that was related to conversations long ago that you never got replied too.
I haven't had much of a problem with T-Mobile to T-Mobile network SMS but many other people I know that use other carriers I never got replied to until I stuck my SIM card into a different phone of mine.
It's a janky situation and if TMobile is already acknowledge this and told to replace phones one time then evidently the issue has gotten out to the people that needs to I just don't know how nobody here on XDA knows about this .
I have tried multiple text apps and nothing seems to be different I even thought about editing access point but usually that only solves MMS problems
This issue was already addressed with a fix to boot by xda. I had the issue my self. With no issues after I updated to oreo.

I tried this method and it did not work, after the Oreo update I tried again but kept having issues. Decided to Force stop the CPS app and install the Google Carrier services app and this worked. Don't remember where I heard/read about Google carrier services. BTW using Googles messages app now and seem to be receiving all messages.
I discovered this a few weeks ago then installed google messages and everything works now
Missing messages FIXED

Hope this information is appreciated.

I have already experienced this issue. It's NOT related to wifi calling at all. I tested it with wifi calling on and with it off, same results.
What worked for me to FIX it was to clear storage and clear cache on the "native" app. You won't lose messages already on the device but you should backup with Carbonite sms first to be safe. Once I wiped storage and cache for the app I started receiving messages again normally.
I found out I was missing messages by installing digits. It's all working now but I'm keeping digits temporarily just to be safe.

I deleted and deactivated digits completely. After I had it completely removed from my account, I rebooted and changed to Android Messages and everything has been fine since October.
Are the issues with this phone sorted yet? I was looking to purchase the T-Mobile variant of this phone but have read about issues such as not receiving texts (huge problem), VoLTE not working with Galaxy S7s, and WiFi connection issues. If they are not fixed, can they at least be avoided by refusing the Oreo update? I would like to avoid rooting my phone just to fix a defect and would only consider using a 3rd party messaging app if it fixed the problem without introducing other problems.
I have my phone choices currently narrow down to the Z2 Force, LG G6, and Galaxy S7 (all are currently in the $400 range). I was leaning towards the Z2 since it's the most powerful, but the issues I'm reading about seem quite severe.
After a little more research I see 2 patches were released for the Z2F after the Android 8.0 update.

I found a Reddit thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/Moto_Z/comments/7zxcpo/tmobile_moto_z2_force_ocx271_update/) where some people mentioned it fixed the SMS notification and Galaxy S7 VoLTE issues. I didn't see anything anything discussing the Bluetooth/WiFi issues or more importanly, the SMS not being received issue (the topic of this thread). Can anyone comment if those were fixed?

The latest 2 Oreo updates have fixed those problems, and they didn't affect everyone.

Need help diagnosing and solving a bizarre problem: S10 doesn't receive texts from a specific sender, except after restarting, retroactively receives all texts sent by that sender. Supernatural powers might be involved, given the sender's phone is mine, and the fickle S10 is my wife's.
I'm including a lot of info below, b/c this seems to be a tough problem to diagnose, so I'm erring on the side of completeness.
Specs: My phone is an LG V35, rooted with Magisk, Android 9. Her S10 is not rooted, running Android 9. Her phone is logged in to the same Google account I use on the Play Store, so that she can use any of my paid apps without paying again. (This has never caused any SMS problems in the past, just annoyances like her getting my reminders, which I then turned off on her phone.)
The problem started on 10/26/22 (about three weeks ago). I know this b/c I sent her a long text that day, which her phone received immediately, followed by another text that same day, which she didn't receive until eight days later on 11/3/22. There were several other texts I sent btw 10/26 and 11/2 that she didn't receive until 11/3. However, we did not catch this problem until yesterday (11/17), when she discovered that I had not, in fact, been ghosting her, but that her phone was not getting my texts. We found this out b/c some other app on her phone wasn't behaving normally, so I restarted her phone -- and BAM, all my unreceived texts suddenly arrived on her phone. Since then, I've tried texting her phone, and it receives nothing from me until a restart, and then her phone receives all my texts retroactively.
As far as we can tell, neither of our phones has any problem with SMS communications with anyone else's phone (except some iPhones -- don't get me started). Other people receive my texts normally, and her phone receives other people's texts normally.
I tried texting her from two different Google Voice accounts I have (both different from the Google account our phones share), and her phone received both G-Voice texts immediately.
I tried changing my SMS app (from Pulse to Textra). No effect (her S10 didn't receive texts until restarting). I tried changing her SMS app. No effect. I did a Samsung software update (thru Settings) on her phone. No effect.
I have an old S10e, my last phone before I switched to the LG. As an experiment, I popped her phone's SIM card into my old S10e. I installed an SMS app neither of us has ever used before, Handcent Next, on the S10e. Without doing anything else (i.e. w/o transferring her S10 data or settings to the S10e), I texted her number from my LG. The text arrived immediately in Handcent. I thought, Eureka!
I promptly factory-reset my S10e, and used Samsung's Smart Switch to transfer "Everything" from her S10 to the S10e. After all her data, apps, & settings were transferred to the S10e, I texted her number, and… NOTHING. The S10e did not receive my text, until I restarted it.
So, my question to all Android sleuths out there is: What the hell?
Excellent detail and info.
My initial guess may be because you're sharing the Google account. Yes, I know you said this didn't cause problems before, but now with Google Messages (I know you're not using that, but still) doing lots of RCS and background stuff, I imagine there may be some behind-the-scenes interaction that is causing problems. I'm not saying this is a fault of RCS or anything like that, but I think the sharing may be the issue?
I would suggest trying to create a new Google account, and keeping the phones on separate accounts... it's a free and easy test, I figure... and you seem quite skilled in more difficult things, so this should be easy enough?
Also note, some apps support family sharing, so if you setup a "family" between the two accounts, you may get the purchased apps on both accounts without too much issue. My wife and I do this and it has worked pretty well for our apps. (FWIW, we both have S10+ and use GMessages on separate google accounts, family shared, and don't have any issues with texts, etc.)
schwinn8: I liked your idea & reasoning, and I implemented it -- new personal Gmail account for her, added to my G-family. Restarted her phone, and sent her a text which did not arrive. (I texted her from a Google Voice account, and that SMS arrived instantly.) I then restarted her phone again, and, for the first time, the initial text still did not arrive. That's new, at least.
What setting could possibly delay a text from coming in?
Well, that's not the direction I wanted things to go either!
Not sure what else could delay texts from coming in... not aware of any delay mechanisms in most cases.
Are both on Wifi during this process? Is the LG running a ROM with working VOWIFI? Yes, I am grasping at straws...
Well, recalling my old Windows 3.x experiences, I factory-reset the S10e (my old phone), and installed all of my wife's apps and recreated all her settings on it from scratch -- i.e. no transferring apps or settings from her phone. A labor-intensive solution, to be sure, but it is working so far. The S10e receives my texts normally.
