Verizon Galaxy S8 Android Oreo - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions & Answers

Hey guys! I just got a Verizon S8 to check out and would like to try out Oreo on it. I noticed the official OTA leaked and is listed here: https://lifehacker.com/how-to-get-the-galaxy-s8-android-8-0-oreo-update-ahead-1821878689
If I install the build in that article, would I still get OTA updates over the air and not have to sideload everything? Also, I'm not sure if I'll be returning the device or not so would I be able to restore to stock software at some point? Thanks in advance!
P.S. If you've used Oreo on the S8, how's your battery life?

CRA1 is awesome battery life from what I have seen every build that comes out requires us to go back to official before installing the next Oreo build. I would think when official comes out you will need to flash back... Nothing like last year's beta where we could update incrementally

Really? I'm flashing back to 7.0 because battery life has been worse for me. I even deleted cached partition.

Did a full factory wipe after install and battery has been great.

Can this resolve the fingerprint problem? My verizon S8 fingerprint sensor didn’t working, i can’t add any finger and it always show an error message “sorry bla bla bla”
I still on BQL1 and I tried to factory reset several times but it still didn’t work ;(

Amazing battery life for me,pretty impressive!

UPDATE: Installed Oreo on my device yesterday and am noticing it feels snappier, more responsive. There's subtle changes to the way things work that makes Oreo definitely worth it on the S8. Have yet to test battery life but I'll let you guys know how it goes later today.

Does it still ask for consent when you switch on location or switch off mobile data?

UPDATE 2: Battery life stinks on S8 with Oreo just like with Nougat. Not noticing nearly any difference so far and it's been a few days. Really unfortunate since I thought things would improve. Any tips for better battery life?

Hardware?

This could very well be the last beta/final release. Here is a link to go from BQL1 to CRAG without having to jump through the extra flash hoops of the initial CRAG post.

Transfer CRAG file to SD card then reboot into recovery mode (Volume up + Bixby + Power.) Click apply update from SD card and find the CRAG file you moved earlier.

You need to downgrade to BQL1 with Odin. Right before it finishes hold volume up and Bixby button to where you enter straight to recovery. Once in recovery. Flash the update. Zip from the root of your SD card phone will reboot and you will be done

The thing is that I just rooted with KingoRoot other day, voiding the warranty.

If you have an SD card inserted to the phone, remove it before downloading the update. The phone doesn't react too well with an SD card.

yeah I received the notification as well. It's only an update to an app "radio" that I dont even use. I'm just patiently waiting for Android 6.0 as they promised the Vivo XL would get.

Will the update go through even if using TWRP? Will it break root or cause a soft brick? I'm still running the original build that it shipped with (dated 26-12-2015 with 2015-11-01 security patch level).

When did "they" (Gionee or BLU?) promise the Vivo XL would get MM?

1. It wouldn't be Gionee doing anything even those this phone is based off of it. 2. Look at the sites that reviewed it, it's been posted many times that it was planned to get Android 6.0 . Android Central....check gsmarena it's out there if you look.

I can't imagine BLU is doing much ROM development. Gionee almost certainly has to provide them with the MM ROM since the Vivo XL is the Gionee Elife S Plus. BLU makes some changes, sure, but they likely aren't developing a MM ROM from scratch.
Anyway, I was just curious and not that interested in reading up on it. I got this phone to be a bedside clock (AMOLED screen FTW) and as a backup in case my DD runs into problems. It was $100 and a good deal at that price, but I have no belief that it will see anything but security patch updates (and even then, I don't expect much).
They arent going to update to 6.0. It used to say that on the Blu website but after the phone launched it was removed from the Blu Vivo XL and Vivo 5 pages.
Can anyone make a flashable zip? I'm using TWRP. I tried modifiing the updater-script, but no luck so far.
I updated the radio but went to an error and now the phone is stuck on boot menu. I can't flash it because it won't connect to any computer.

Worse batterylife with OOS 3.5.4

Hey guys, is anyone also facing worse battery life in the newest version? OOS 3.5.3 to 3.5.4
I noticed the drop too....but with dash charge I don't care too much
just read..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70143031&postcount=67
I'm trying to test if using the 3.5.3 modem radio helps even a little. It does not seem to do very much.. The battery still seems to drain faster then on 3.5.3. So i am contemplating on downgrading it aswell..
Maybe I will try to downgrade. Seems to be the only possibility at the moment.
no change for me in battery life.
still 8h sot daily.
fix your setup.
Same problem here with 3.5.4.
Especially phone calls use a lot of battery power.
Is it possible to downgrade to 3.5.3 without an unlocked bootloader?

I don't know, I just downgraded, but you can easily relock bootloader after flashing. Idk the exact commands. As always Google is your friend.

NOTE: This should only be used if running stock, bootloader locked and unrooted. Haven't tested this downgrade procedure on any other configuration.
CREDIT: Namanjr for the link to the OTA in his wonderful thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/how-to/zip-flashable-firmware-modem-t3509015
Yes it is definitely possible. I just did it because I noticed the battery drain. The process couldn't be easier. Follow these steps.
1. Download the 3.5.3 OTA Full Zip from here: https://s3.amazonaws.com/oxygenos.o...8_OTA_027_all_1611222319_884473ff95304c30.zip
2. Connect your phone to your computer via original usb cable.
3. In your phone's notification shade, press on the "USB for charging" notification and select MTP file share for Windows and Mac.
4. Open the phone on your computer's file explorer. (You should see your storage contents and folders on your phone)
5. Copy the previously downloaded OTA into the root directory of your phone. (Don't navigate into any of the phones sub-folders just stay in the root directory)
6. Go to your settings menu on your phone and scroll all the way down to "System Updates" and enter into that menu.
7. Hit the gear icon in the Upper Right-hand corner and select "Local Upgrade"
8. It should list the OTA that you put in the root folder. Click on it and confirm "Upgrade Now" (The upgrade dialog box also indicates that this method does not affect your data so you should be good to proceed and keep you existing data)
9. It should begin the update process, reboot the phone and complete the "Upgrade" (Really a "Downgrade")
10. Once rebooted go into your Settings on your phone and confirm that it downgraded to 3.5.3. in the "About Device" section of the menu.
11. Hit the Thanks if this helped.
NOTE: You will probably see a notification in your settings menu and also your notification shade advising you of an update being available. This will be the 3.5.4 OTA again so don't choose to update to that until they have released a better fix for the battery drain issue.
Thanks a lot!
Does this keep all my data?

I don't think it touches your /data/ folder so you should be good. Actually I just confirmed that during the process when you click on the OTA it says that it does not affect your data. Cheers
I noticed the battery drain too, so I downgraded to OS 3.5.3.

Yesterday I got reboot while charging ..
and it has Bluetooth connection drops. (regression to 3.5.3)
Gps need some more filtering... Loosing sightings in Pogo becouse of gps drift spikes..
3.5.4 is a mess.
My phone feels hotter when gaming with 3.5.4
Higher temperature = Higher energy consumption.
For me, SOT is worse with 3.5.4.
I switched back to 3.5.3 by downloading the full OTA ZIP and placing it in the root directory, then select it as a local system upgrade.

[Discussion / Poll] How successful was your unofficial upgrade to Nougat?

Hi! I am starting this discussion / poll in the hope that people will think twice before upgrading (unofficially) to Nougat. So far, what I see is 3 outcomes: 1) Device gets bricked 2) Unofficial Nougat has major bugs and people decide to downgrade back to Marshmallow 3) Upgrade is successful and user is pleased. I think that the latter scenario is actually quite rare and I feel for inexperienced people who brick their device. My question, before you try to upgrade unofficially: is it worth it?
People who brick their device doesn't follow the steps as there are written.
for example t hey flash the b370 version without the additional package and they reply 'bluetooth isnt working'
i encourage people upgrading to nougat because of the new ui, the better battery/ram management and the appearance of drawer
i rollbacked too many times to marshmallow, upgraded to nougat without any problem or brick, just follow the steps and the installation is successful.

I have two p9 lites, and they are both running on b370,updated trough hicare (1.99gb),and it works perfectly.Battery life, camera, bluetooth, everthing works amazingly compared to older nougat betas.
L-31 P9, Battery life is much better used to get only 4 hours on screen time watching videos now i get 6 with 25% left so easily 7 (my screen is always at 60% brightness) I'm not rooted because i didn't flash it after but i will root soon using a PC (I'm new to rooting (came from IPhone) yet i can easily do it probably because I'm a very techy person) anyway it seems faster my camera and everything works fine i used to get 1.8gb 4am max now i get 2.2 (with no apps running) also split screen works very well and is not laggy at all, one complain i have is the live wallpaper i used for some reason stoped working after i updated (black hole stock love wallpaper) i went into settings to re apply it as it's happened once before on MM but i said there was no wallpapers at all not even still ones, if someone could give me a link to the live wallpaper I'd really appreciate that but other than that no complaints at all it's much better than MM it even has a F.LUX like function built in to reduce blue light levels to help late at night so you're not wide awake , the pull down menu has Many and i mean Many more functions not just 5-10 there's probably 20+ and you can have more than 5 at one time, notifications are good and work well, everything seems overly big to me but thats probably because i used to have my phone on a 300 DPI before de-rooting and updating, like i was saying it has almost no drawbacks it's very polished If you install it correctly (one package before the other and it only takes 20 mins max and you data is not deleted i used tarp not the one from this forum but it works the same i got logged out of apps and that's all that's happend when i updated)

I agree 100%.
Upgrade to newer version of OS, official or unofficial, is one of the best thing of Android. But people need to be careful with their device, if it's not an OTA update obviously there are some steps to follow.. every device is different and just flashing whatever without attention may cause problem. Reading the steps to follow takes only 1 minute.
I'm on B132, is there a quick way to upgrade to B370? I've tried hi-care app but says no updates
Thanks

I take your points but looking at the answers and questions forum again today, I still think the number of people bricking or downgrading is quite high. I love Nougat too, but I am warning newbies that it might be worth waiting for an official update or if not, concentrating on what you're doing. My penny's worth...

I think that you must be bootloader unlock and rooted to use TWRP method . Too complicated for me :/

Whatever I try through Firmware Finder or HiSuite it keeps downloading the 1,24GB file and not the 1,99 Gb upgrade so I always and up with ND90 test key .
Something is blocking it but no one knows what

It's really not all that difficult and there are several guides around here. Unlocking the bootloader and rooting MM is pretty much without risks. I'd say go for it.

do you intend to keep your device stock/unrooted? i'm reluctant to take the update for fear of losing root.

My Note FE is my prime device. Not keen to experiment too much.
ROOT?!

I haven't found a reliable method of rooting my N935L model. I am dying to root it. Can you link me?

i followed the same process to install the latest version of TWRP for the Note 7 and flash the latest version of SR1-SuperSU-v2.82-SR1-20170608224931.zip. that's how i rooted my 935K. so far, this process still works with the latest AQG6 release which is available from updato.com. NOTE: if you flash the full OEM ROM via Odin, be sure to backup your internal storage; i had to format data after flashing the OEM ROM.

Good to know. Do we still have adhell? I expect Google will want to see that app spiked ASAP. Also, whether you update OTA or flash the full firmware, you will need to format data to get root. I long ago routined this process so that it takes about an hour all told.

correct, the format data requirement is a bit of a pain; however, i keep very little important "stuff" on internal storage and back up my external and internal storage once a week.
Have updated by flashing stock to clear Knox first. Adhell still works. Just as well: cannot install TWRP, neither Exynos variant. Not such a pain while adhell keeps ads out and allows me disable copious junk. Still, am I doing something wrong? Odin installs always a success (four times so far). Any other reports?
Perhaps we need a device specific variant now...

what do mean by flashing stock to clear Knox first? and you flashed build N935KKKU3AQG6? i had no problem flashing twrp-3.1.1-0-gracelte.img.tar (not the Korean version twrp-3.1.1-0-graceltekor.img.tar) using Odin 3.12. reboot to Download mode and be sure to untick Auto reboot. next load twrp-3.1.1-0-gracelte.img.tar to the AP slot, flash and when complete, reboot to recovery. my method is to hold the down-volume and power key until the phone turns off, then press and hold the up-volume key, the power key and the the home key until the device boots to TWRP.

1. Probably clumsily expressed. I flashed the original AQFE stock to get out of root then updated that. I was dloading the AQG6 firmware at that time but rather than wait (when I could have flashed that instead) I went ahead.
2. Usually I flash TWRP, allow the restart, close down and reboot into recovery-TWRP. Didn't work this time - is this a significant change? Followed your method, which worked - except perhaps to underline that the device should remain connected to the PC while closing it down (otherwise it will automatically reboot). Thanks for taking the trouble to give detailed instructions.

This is an old one I guess. Found this new firmware on Sammoblie on 2017/12/13 but I cannot flash it at the moment.
Can anyone try it? Hope it will bring bixby voice to our Note Fe
Got my K-version updated through OTA, no Bixby.

That's a bit unrelated but I was wondering : how did you managed to show your carrier name (AT&T) in the status bar ?
I've always tried but other than with root capabilities I've never been able to display it.
Just received January security patch.
Me too!

Android 9.0 / One UI / AOD Contact information missing

Hi all,
Today I have updated my Note 9 from 8.1 to 9.0
Everything went smoothly, and the update was installed without any issues.
Seems to be that everything works fine, except one small little thing:
Contact information on the AOD.
It does exist, and it's visible on the lock screen.
Tried to remove it, re-add it, phone restart, cache removal, app cache+data removal, but without any luck....
I'm using the up-to-date version of the app, 4.1.37.
Basically, everything is stock and up to date.
Does anyone have the same problem?
[UPDATE] I have just talked to Samsung Support, and looks like it's a bug.
Her advice was to do the factory reset.
I need to do the backup first, and then I will let you know the outcome.
Could you share how you updated to Pie please? I'm getting mixed, confusing info. after browsing thru all the forum threads...
Thanks!

*#1234# <--- Type that into phone dialer and see if it's the same as the screen shot firmware Note 9 version info i have posted! if yes then follow below!
NOTE: THESE UPDATE.ZIP's ARE ONLY FOR DEVICES WITH MULTI-CSC OXM!!!
You can check this, to type in your dialer *#1234#, and check if OXM is in the CSC-build...
Managed to get the UPDATE.ZIP if your Note9 is currently on ARL3 (Oreo) to CSA2 (Pie)
ARL3 -> CSA2
If your device is still on ARK2, then update first to ARL3:
ARK2 -> ARL3
* If you have sd card place update.zip in it boot to recovery by holding power up + power +bixby button.
* Go to apply update from SD card.
* just choose install update, If no sd card choose adb in recovery.
* Download adb from here https://dl.google.com/android/reposi...st-windows.zip
Please NOTE this is not my guide!! All Thanks and all credits go to @jaylence for taking the effort to reset his device, and getting the "update.zip" for you!

Hi,
Thank you for your time and effort!
Looks like it's a Android 9 feature.
Just to make it sure, contact information text does appear on the lock screen?

Customer support told me to do the factory reset.
Not sure if I want to do it, and reconfigure the whole thing back again.
Has anyone tried to do and restore the complete phone backup with Samsung Switch?

I`ve done factory reset after the update and then set up the device. And after installing all the apps wipe cache.
But still, have the same issue.

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it!
I was wondering if I should do the factory reset, because I've done everything except factory reset.
But, now you told me that you did it, and that the problem still persists, you have really saved me some time!
I'm going to contact the Samsung support one more time, and let them know what's going on.
Stay in touch!

You`re welcome mate.
BTW, how is your battery life in Android Pie?
Mine is not satisfactory. I used to get better battery backup in Android O. Though I know this new OS would take some time to be stable, and battery backup might be increased.
Sorry for the off-topic.

To be honest, I haven't noticed any difference.
I'm able to go through the day without recharging it, and that's the most important thing for me.
How often do you charge it?
