Can't restore backed up data - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions & Answers

I had to get a new phone and backed up all my stuff. Well, the one thing that won't restore from Samsung cloud is my texts. Apparently, my phone does not allow texts to restore.
It's there a way to side step this and restore my texts from the cloud?

A bit of confusion about Sprite Backup...

I purchased the full version of Sprite Backup (figured it'd be well worth it) so that I could backup my 6800 and transfer some of its data to my 6850. More specifically, I was hoping to pull the contacts, call history, and text messages over to the new phone.
The contacts came over with no fuss -- actually, they came over through ActiveSync, so there was no problem there at all. However, when I tried to restore PIM data using the 6800 backup, the phone tells me that "Sprite Backup Requires Authorization To Run". As you can imagine, this is a bit weird. I tried using "Personal Data Only" as well as "Merge Level 2" and came up with the same result both times.
I've only had the phone for about 6 hours and haven't started combing through the threads here to make necessary edits, so there's nothing I'd care about losing. How do I pull the text messages and call history from my old phone?
Thanks in advance for any and all help, and sorry if I posted this in the wrong section.
Edit: I'm using Version 6.5.2.102
Sqube,
Even Sprite shows it needs code but you can still use it as in evaluation period for 10 days, so you can go ahead with the software and restore the utility. But i suggest using PIM backup for contacts, task, and messages as that works better than Sprite backup.
Unfortunately, I can't. That's why I'm posting here. I've already purchased the software; it's just not letting me restore the information from my 6800 to my 6850.
If I had known that Sprite Backup was incapable of restoring that information across different phones, I never would have purchased it, especially since I was coming to an all new phone.
Thanks for the help anyway.
It should be capable of doing what your asking. Why haven't you contacted Sprite about this issue?
Quite frankly, I was hoping I could find an answer here because these forums are (a) better; (b) more populated; and (c) don't have random spam in every other thread.
hmmmm
i have had the same problem using sprite to restore from PC.
solved issue by re-installing sprite on PPC before executing the restore from the PC. hopefully this issue has already been solved for you.
cheers.
As far as I know, the problem is you are tryign to back up data from a HTC Mogul to a HTC Touch Pro.... It doesnt; work like that... Settings in diffrent versions of windows on diffrent devices just don't work.... But what SHOULD work for you is that new "Microsoft My Phone"... you can back up lost of those things you wanted up over that, and restore them on a diffrent phone.... Try that and let us know... then when it is setup how oyu want... THEN creatire you backup using sprite backup
thanks teej, i did manage to backup and restore my HD2 to and from the PC. had to tweak a couple of things though.
i did a full backup to PC (everything except storage card - contacts, emails, messages, all calendar data, system data and my documents).
i also did a PIM data backup (contacts, emails, messgages and all calendar data) to my devices storage card (luckily).
so i flashed to new ROM, hard reset a couple more times, then attempted a full restore from my PC. used sprites same device/new ROM restore setting (called 'merge mode 2' i think), and it restored everything except my personal data (so the full PC restore didnt restore contacts, emails, messgages and all calendar data). luckily i had the PIM data backup and was able to restore all PIM data from that.
so with the two backups combined... i had success.
although this wasnt as straight-forward as i feel backups and restores should be... it was MUCH better than the backups i had done with SPB (using SPB i have had corrupted backup files on multiple occasions - i definately recommend using Sprite Backup over SPB, and i havent tried Resco or Microsoft My Phone).
advice to anyone backing up.... create multiple backup files, so if one fails or is corrupted... there is a safety net.
cheers.

Back Ups

Back in the day when I had windows mobile, I had a program that synced my text messages, picture mail (sprint mms) and call logs to Outlook. When I upgraded to Outlook 2007 and this app ceased to function, I found a backup program that I could schedule to run each night that would backup these items to the SD card, retaining 3 days worth of backups on the card. If I forgot to restore them when I wiped, no problem the backup program could add only the new or missing ones back to the device. I would like to find a way to backup the same way with Android, does anyone know of anything like this for Android? :cyclops:

for contacts and pics you can sync with your google account.
For messages you can use sms backup & restore.
I think there is no way to sync with outlook atm.

Yes you can set schedule backup to SD card for SMS, MMS, and call log(and much more) with Titanium backup, with flexibility to select frequency as well number of backup.
Read 'How to keep device backup up-to-date' on my signature.
dr. ketan, does Titanium Backup offer the flexibility to backup the entire phone (ROM, application programs, data, pictures, videos, etc.)? Thanks in advance for your reply.
No, TB can't backup ROM/Kernel or Pictures/Video.. TB can backup application(system and user) and data of application. It needs root to backup system app and data of app(syst/user)
ROM/Kernel can be backup by Nandroid.
Use sms backup+ to backup & restore all your messages, MMS, Contacts, Call logs to your Gmail account(s). It;s Freeware.

What do you mean by everything? Because absolutely "everything" would be a nandroid backup. Do you mean just your emails? l you emails, apps, and other play services? Or apps, media, launcher, sms', contacts?
All of your services linked to your Google account (such as Gmail, Play Store Apps, G+ media, Play Music, etc) is backed up by default. Have you turned this off and want to know how to turn it back on?
If you want to grab everything off your SD Card, you can zip it up and upload it to Drive.

sorry for making you confused
what i want backup is all data, like contacts, messages, gallery, settings and notes.
before a year or so, i done this with my note. that i made a backup, and restored another android phone, i got everything, including last message and contact list which i used before the backup on the first phone.
situation.
front glass of my S4 got a scratch. they says, this need to change display system, so there wont be any guaranty for the data.
so i must to make a backup, and later to restore.

If you are rooted and have CWM then your best option is a nandroid backup. This is only if you will restoring your backup to the same (type of) phone that you used to make the nandroid backup.
What I believe happened to you last time was the auto-backup feature provided by Google. This should already be on for you, but you can check by following these steps.
PS: This is the S4 Active forum, not S4 forum. Doesn't matter in this case though, but in the future you should look for the right one.

[Q] best non-root backup?

So my phone died and is now miraculously working. So now I am backing everything up in case it happens again.
Here's the thing. Google sync never works perfectly for me and the HTC backup doesn't either.
I've tried MyBackup in the past but whenever I used it it would mess up the contacts. It backed them all up but upon restoring each entry of a contact (i.e. home phone, mobile home, notes, etc.) became a new contact with that name. So instead of having one Bob in my contact list I would have six bobs, one with the cell number, another with an email, and so on.
I was wondering what backup apps you guys could recommend that restore the contacts properly. I only care about the contacts. MyBackup works well with SMS and call logs so if need be I can use different apps for different backups and what I need now is a good contact solution.
Thanks
Helium from Clockworkmod. Its the best method of backup for non rooted users IMHO. https://www.clockworkmod.com/carbon
I have never experienced a problem restoring my Google account contacts, I take it you have removed the account and tried to set it up again to see if it will let you save the contacts. You can verify that they are saved if you log onto gmail when using a browser.

Thanks for the suggestion but trying out the free one it backs up apps but the people/contacts app doesn't show up in the list meaning it doesn't do what I need...

best way to backup everything?

so now after my ongoing volume issue all the sudden my persistent ? Google search bar seems to partially disappear if almost totally randomly! f#(+ing annoying!!! I need to factory reset I guess.. I don't use backup to Google so cross that out. WHAT can I use to backup apps contacts pics music pics etc..? I've always had a rooted phone until now HATE IT SCREW VERIZON. THANKS GUYS
I've used Helium to back up app data and text messages. Some programs (such as whatsapp) allow you to manually save a backup to your internal storage as well. You can copy the backup to your PC with AirDroid or many other methods. You can also upload it to google drive or another cloud service.
