Hello,
I switched from Lumia 920 to Nokia 8 about a month ago. But it often freezes and hangs and apps crash (Chrome, Camera, System UI). It's my first Android device after years of Windows Phones and I don't know if this is an expected behavior of Android. Is it?
Could this be a faulty device? Or maybe app incompatibilities? I use the Microsoft Launcher and TrueCaller and it happens quite often that Chrome crashes when I open TrueCaller (although I don't even use Chrome).
And I don't like the camera. I always liked taking pictures, but with this camera it is so annoying. The app often freezes the phone for minutes and is laggy overall. I tried OpenCamera and the Google Pixel Camera app and although they are better, they still lag or crash sometimes. And it takes very long to take a photo compared to all my previous devices (Lumia 920, Lumia 925, Lumia 950), even with HDR turned off.
I mean, I really like the hardware of the device and there is much to like about Android, but I really hate the inconsistent performance and lagginess of the software and since there is no soft reset key combo (at least I couldn't find one) like on Windows Phones I don't have as much trust in it than I had with my old phones and can't do anything, when the phone freezes.
Any tips for me to get a better experience or something?
I didn't have any freezes or crashes so I would try factory reset and if didn't help then RMA the phone.
As for the camera - lag in other apps maybe cause by above problems (Nokia's app is laggy even on my device so it's normal in this case).

I found one version of Pixel Camera app caused lots of issues with my camera crashing and hanging so switched to a different version which was fine.
I had the system ui crashes a lot recently using Nova launcher so unistalled it last week so used standard launcher and then MS Launcher and Action launcher and no issues since, I think it was a problem somehow with Nova so I will try that again soon - my point is the launcher could be causing some issues so install it and test with standard launcher for a few days to make sure the phone is performing as it should or if the launcher is making the problems due to somethng strange going on.
I tried uninstalling some apps now and it seems that the performance has improved. But I want to test a little longer and then I install again to see which app makes problems. I uninstalled "Microsoft Launcher", "ESET Security", "VLC" and "ES File Explorer File Manager", btw.
And I am playing around with Tasker to make little changes, like turning off the sound it makes when I plug in the charger or that a caller will be announced via Text-to-Speech or that the screen wakes up when I get a new notification.
I am quite sure that I found the reason for the laggy experience. It seems that the Microsoft Outlook Calendar widget makes problems when pinned to the homescreen, even on the default launcher. As soon as I add the widget, it starts to lag and as soon as I remove it, it works again - even on Microsoft Launcher. Although it seems that either Oreo 8.1 or the latest update for Microsoft Outlook resolved the issue. At least there where no problems the whole day today with the widget on my homescreen.
I thought I let you know if anybody else has this problem. Now I start to really like the phone, especially with Oreo 8.1. I really hope HMD can fix the default camera app in the near future, which is the only problem left. And more settings for the Glance screen would be nice as well, so that I can keep it always on and have the option to see if there are new WhatsApp messages.
Truecaller has a problem on Android 8 where chrome crashes when it's launched, it's not just Nokia.

Strange for me I had zero issues with MS Launcher, it was the fastest and most reliable.
For a few days I had Nine calendar, Outlook calendar and normal calendar widgets on home screens at the same time as I was trying to test which one I like more and I had no slow down.
Nova is working great for me on 8.1 also - after I did a brand new setup from scratch.
I found some issues with Action Launcher - not for speed but every so often the side swipe screens caused issues.
Default launcher is very fast but I just don't like it - no customisation or icon pack support,

I have now zero issues as well and I am happy about my phone now. Although pinning the calendar widget of Outlook to my homescreen still makes my phone laggy. I don't know why, but I use now the calendar widget of MS Launcher which doesn't make any problems.

hey, i just installed the Pdaimatejam ROM with mango and everything is really smooth, however, Whatsapp is really slow. From the homescreen it takes almost 10 seconds to go to chats and then into a chat another 5 seconds. Is there a fix for this or is this normal? All other apps are fast and smooth..
The app is not well developed. This has nothing to do with the rom. I had the same experiences on other WP7 Roms.
yeah i had the same impression it is just crappy software somehow. I used it a lot on Android the past few months and its always a bit on the slow side.
I just saw skype for WP7 being released as a beta and it is already working really slick. No compare. That's how software should be.
Hey, seems to be problem with whatsapp itself. switched to WP Mango yesterday (from hyperdroid) and am pissed when comparing whatsapp with the android version.
But I have another Question: Mail accounts on my leo piss me off. everything is synced well. googlemail starts...but somehow i cant really navigate through the mails. cant even use the search button because the keyboard starts off a life of its own? ghosts typing? i cannot explain why its the way it is. same problem with yahoo account. seems to be a problem of the mail application.
I go with this rom 9.Marc HD2 Pdaimatejam Rom Wp7.5 mango 7.10.8107.79 v7.5 >FULLY UNLOCKED
everything else works like a charm, but no freedom with the mail application... anybody experienced similar problems with haunting ghoists in ther mail app?
Actually no. I was on UltraFruit and there it was fine.

same experience
slow and lagy...hopefully it will be fixed on future releases
Whatsapp developers dont care about wp users!!
i have the same experience too,
i was on Android using the x10 mini pro and whatsapp was normal to fast and very responsive.
i switched to wp7.5 Lumia 710 the OS is supper fast , faster than any Android i ever seen (i used lot of devices htc desire s, HD, sensation XE, evo 3d,Samsung GS1 & GS2, sony ericson Neo, arc & arc s), but whatsapp was very f***g experience.
BTW WP is not mature yet but it's really the best OS i ever used, Fast (always), Easy, Powerful, and it never crash, even faster than iOS.
i hope wp8 will have all the missing futures, I don't care about market app numbers , neither about what some fans says against wp, i have all what i want integrated into my OS.
and i hope the big developer like autodesk, adobe .... who focus just on iOS to look at wp......
It's a shame really, I came from android and whatsapp was superfast on that.. But on this it is an absolute nightmare. Takes centuries to load up! Although everything else is butter smooth. The whatsapp devs need to put some elbow grease into it..
hi people,
I'm looking to switch to WinPhone.
I've got a few quite good features on Android that I'd like to make sure I can have/reproduce on WinPhone too. May you help me with those ?
- Have ringer/notifications volume to get adjusted to ambient noise and/or calendar events automatically
- have a car mode
- have an event/place actions system (like Tasker or OnX)
Many many thanks
Fabio
- for ambient no...
- all this (car mode, task manager with close X) is available with upcoming GDR3 update or today for developer or via WP AppStudio...
notice: car connection with BT for hands free calls and audio reproduction is available long time ago in WP but with upcoming GDR3 come additional settings
I'd say it depends on what type of android user you are. If you just user the phone, sms, browsing and occasional app then you're fine. If you're a power user then you'll just get annoyed and frustrated at simple things that you use yo be able to do but now can't.
As I've said in the windows 1520 thread, its undoubtedly a gorgeous piece of hardware and is the prime drive for me to keep looking into windows phone. Dare I say it and definitely not trying to be a troll, but if it did run android, I'm sure myself and others would buy it in a flash.
Sticking with realities though, I don't think WP8 is quite there yet for the advanced android user. I'm still very concerned that without DPI settings/apps with phablet UI, that the 1520 is just going to be running blown up phone apps, like first gen android tablets, which is not ideal.
File browser is key and offers so much flexibility. Copying and sharing photos off your DSLR, sending whatever file you want through gmail, deleting downloaded files etc. Skydrive is not a suitable replacement, especially if you're not always on wifi/limited 4G data plans.
Apps is becoming less of an issue with most of the core apps there in some shape and using 3rd party official apps is not something I worry about. It is still an issue however for niche apps. Eg Niche medical apps, a reliable CHM file reader (reference text books), advanced pdf reader/editor with the ability to underline/comment/draw in.... I can go on. Even office 365 functionality that is supposedly a huge selling point is largely replaceable with Kingsoft office which is superb sans the synching (you just need the extra step of google drive).
Then there are the core google services which have really exploded in functionality to become more than just gimmicks in the past 12 months. – Chrome browser with its desktop session synching, google now with its local contextual searches, automatic G+ photo uploader (full size backups with auto enhancement unlike dropbox).
Lets not mention 3rd party accessory compatibility with Windows Phone...ie. there APIs are so closed that no BT keyboards work with it for example.
There's a lot which is being fixed and is "promised" to be fixed in upcoming updates from MS – unfortunately thats always been the story with WP as they play catchup, which I understand being a new OS. However, 12 months on, even basic things like notification centre, screen rotation lock, separate notification ringtones, separate notification/system volumes are still yet to be fixed/only being patched now.
In terms of positives of the windows phone os, to be honest there isn't anything that appeals to me that I'm not already experiencing in android. Metro UI I don't mind but can be hit and miss with no notification centre and when you're relying on 3rd party live tiles which don't always update frequently enough for your liking (and wit no option to change). Simplicity is always touted as a windows phone advantage, but to be honest I find android simple enough if you know what you're doing and the appeal is more for perhaps people new to smartphones. As an android user, the simplicity actually feels limiting as I can't get things to work exactly how I want it to. In short it's a matter of how much I can compromise when coming from Android to wp on the software side unfortunately.
Having said all this I'd still keep looking at WP due to Nokia's hardware and their general nailing of the camera (which android hasn't accomplished fully yet), but there needs to be a lot of improvement on the software side from MS and 3rd party developers before I can fully see myself changing platforms. As good as the hardware and camera may be, my smartphone is my mobile computer replacement and the OS needs to be able to function like that.
Perhaps when RT merges with 8.1 and a few more MS and Nokia updates roll out it'll get more capable and phablet friendly. But until that time I'm keep jealously watching and admiring in awe at the camera and hardware but deep down knowing I just can't do what I want to do on it right now.
YMMV.
Good luck!
Something like Tasker or automatic volume adjustment will require homebrew, or at least an OEM app; third-party apps aren't allowed to run continuously in the background (it's bad for performance and battery life) on WP.
thank to you all so far
is it possible to have voice driving directions in car (thinking of Here Drive) AND listen to music from another app at the same time ? Or view a Youtube video ? Is WP8 really multitask these days ?

youtube no, because when you switch to start screen or other app automatically stop playing (but only tried in official YT app and SuperTube)
Here Drive will run fully in the background (battery warning: don't forget to stop it if you take a break somewhere short of your destination!) and will override other audio playback to give directions. Start Here Drive, enter directions and start navigation, then hit Start (or press-and-hold Back) and go to your media player app. You should continue getting turn-by-turn prompts. It doesn't actually pause the audio, which is annoying - you'll miss bits of songs or audiobooks, for example - but it works.
So the finial version has come out. Im sure a lot of you guys have updated to it. Plus a lot of you have been using the Dev version along the way.
What are your guys thoughts?
I like the the new version but also there are still tons of things are are bugging the *poop* out of me.
I thought this was going to be "THE" version that appeased almost all android fans. Fixed a lot the issues since 2.3 while bringing a lot of new features.
1st the things i dont like.
1. Battery % WHY THE *heck* do we still not have an option to turn on a battery % next to the battery icon?????!!!!!!!
2. Hangouts picture (when syncing with FB) not always showing up bug is still present.
3. I like the new light colors with white and grey but why did they choose that color of teal. Im not super excited about that but i do like the white backgrounds.
4. Multitask menu. I dont like how EVERYTHING is in there. And why do we STILL NOT HAVE A CLEAR ALL
5. Google Now launcher. I like it and dont like it. Dont like how everything is so big and dont like how i cant have the middle space be my default. But Nova fixed that. Plus im rooted so i changed my DPI
6. Battery life. Ive only used it for 1 day (going on 1 day) but it seems my battery life is worse then on 4.4.4
7. Battery menu. Dont like anything about it.
Things i do like.
1. Material design (in most places) animations and universal layout for apps is nice.
2. Lockscreen notifications although i dont like how EVERYTHING is on there but im still messing with the menu for this feature.
Im still playing with it and im sure it will get better as apps update (what took them so long) but over all im kinda disappointed with the amount of hype 5.0 got.
Same here, like it but meh it's not there yet, hoping for apps updates etc. And my battery life is slightly worse too
I like it so far, but smart lock seems buggy as hell. I've got my Moto 360 set up as a trusted device, and even went so far as to set up face unlock, and still, I'm prompted for a passcode more often than not. There really needs to be a rescan option -- or, better yet, just make it work like it's supposed to.
Battery life seems worse for me too but I will give it another few days before really making that decision
Make sure you turn WiFi always scanning off. I am getting better than the Dev preview because of the fixed WiFi drain bug. I like it though.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
You cant know anything about battery one day after update, after update system still need some time to "sit on place" and its drains battery.
Where is material design music. Sadly it doesn't animate when I press the play button. I really like what was was shown in the demo .

I have my moto 360 set up as a trusted device and I never need to unlock my phone. Only on reboot. rest of the time works perfectly.
Im not using face unlock though.
hmmm...
i don't like how you'not able to delete multiple contacts + separation of the phone numbers from the emails.
photos app gather all the jpg files that are in the sdcard which kinda sucks (dude, i don't need my album art in my photo gallery.) + you need Google+ enabled to be able to just look at the photos.
multitask is OMG.... really really nice effect but damn, is there any real need to "mark" every menu page i open? (oh, where's the "clear all" button?)
camera is ok but there is no 0.03 seconds of the new API. pictures are taken as slow as before.
material design is not bad but it shines on multiple layers only.
keyboard is really cool looking and although it'll take some time to get used to "button-less buttons" i do like it.
and battery, well, i can't say since it's only 1 day of use.
still, i think it's going to be ok (i still hate those wakelocks though... ) and last but not least, Chrome... i still miss "text wrapping" that's why i use Opera
all in all, i don't hate it, i'm not thrilled about it but i'm sure it'll "grow on me".
UI looks definitely great, performance and battery haven't improved, nor got worse. But it's too early to comment on that.
No toggle in quick settings to cycle through sound modes(sound/silent,vibrate), dafuq Google? I'm certainly missing Xposed.
very annoyed about the removal of the stock email app, i dont want to comingle gmail and my work stuff.

I really like having all my emails in gmail app. First day of use, I'm going to get 4hrs sot without messing with settings. It runs really smooth with hells kernel. I would like the pull downs yo have more options, but all in all, I'm happy.

I haven't had to enter my PIN once since I set up smart lock with my 360 and face yesterday. Works great!
You can't use the Photos app if you disable the Google+ app. So.... now I have to open the camera app and scroll through my pictures one by one to view them. Super!
I kinda don't like it.
1: The color scheme is not consistent throughout, which really irritates me. While you spend most of your time in a launcher (I use Nova pesonally) or in apps, some of those apps are system apps, and it seems like almost all of them have had color changes, they don't look good and don't even make sense.
2: Some of the features are cool, and even sound great...but they are commonly riddled with "omg, no way!" points of frustration. Smart-lock...would be AWESOME if it would just freaking work when connected to a specific wifi network! For example...in prior versions I had used tasker and secure settings to disable the lock screen and have a significantly longer screen timeout whenever I was connected to my home wifi. Tasker works just fine for the other things I use it for, such as reading my text messages outloud...but only when I'm connected to my home wifi or headphones. But the pin lock errors out, every single time. Root works, tasker and secure settings are configured exactly as they were before, and they both even have administrative rights. It still fails every time, and I get the toast message pop up. I wonder if it is because Google is worried that your neighbor might name their wifi network to the same as yours is, and have it be an open network so when they steal your phone they would automatically be able to get into it. If that is the case...well, that should be easy to fix, one make the service only work with password protected networks, and I'm also sure they could just only have it work when the network name is also reporting the same mac address. But I digress.
3: Lightflow. Ugh, enough said. You might say this is not a lollipop specific thing, but the guy posted an inquiry on this on the support thread since it was an complication with the new notification system, and they responded back saying they fixed it, and it has still not been pushed out by Google yet!
4: I find myself unable to quickly remove notifications from the lock screen and even when the phone is unlocked in some instances. For example, if I am copying lots of individual files over wifi from my computer, and there are multiple "copied" notifications as a result, the first few can be swiped away, but the rest can't! I have to click on them, and then close it. Kinda annoying.
5: One of the only reasons why I really wanted Lollipop were for the improvements to the lockscreen notifications. I envisioned being able to stop using dashclock entirely, and also having an all around easier time with notifications while the phone was locked. Nope! Sure, the basic functionality is good, I can read text messages without an app for it, and that's great...but I have to say I really miss having the unlock ability from just turning the phone on and swiping. Now I have to turn the phone on, press the padlock to get the phone to switch to the pattern lock, then do the pattern lock. That extra step is really quite annoying for me. I'd prefer to have the "extra step" be to SEE THE NOTIFICATIONS. You know, just like how it used to be with dashclock. (You would know you had a notification by the little icon right next to the time and you would swipe down from there to read them) Maybe I'm crazy, but I unlock my phone a lot more often than I have notifications to read. Especially since I can't get the pinlock automatic toggle to work when I am connected to my home wifi!
6: Most lock screen icons are blocked...and for good reason. But some of them are not. For example, in power toggles I have always used an icon that automatically makes a 14 minute timer, and another one for 29 minutes. I use this for my breaks at work of course. (The icon triggers a task in the "Trigger" app that does this) This works from the lockscreen...which sounds great because I can set that timer without having to unlock my phone...but it has also been deactivated by mistake when the phone was in my pocket. Ugh!
7: I don't like the "swipe down" from either the lock screen or from notifications bar option. A lot of this is because I am really used to using powertoggles for this, and this duplicates a lot of that functionality, but
I knew this was going to happen, I have been complaining about software "improvements" at work for the last year and a half. If something is working, don't break it!

Yeah, I've figured out the issue. I use "Gravity Screen" to shut my device down when I put it in my pocket. It seems that if Gravity Screen puts the device into standby, it also locks the screen in such a way that Smart Lock is disabled. Since that's normally how I shut off my device, I was seeing this almost every time. I'm hoping that the dev can fix this, because I'm really not used to touching my power button.
On another note. I wouldn't mind the email integration with Gmail, except that there's no way to label my various Exchange accounts. I have two separate Exchange accounts that I must monitor, and both simply show as a random-colored circle with a letter "J" (which is the first letter of each email address). I can't even change the color to something that would help distinguish the accounts. I just have to remember that random-color-J #1 equals one account, and random-color-J #2 equals another. It's very annoying. A combined inbox certainly wouldn't hurt, either.
Hello all.
Some context: I recently purchased the Huawei Mate 20 Pro because I had that ‘itch’ for a new gadget/phone that I’m sure many of you are familiar with. That, coupled with its beautiful design, its amazing camera setup and the positive reviews made me go out and buy it without hesitation.
That was 4 days ago. I have now decided to return it tomorrow.
It has simply been the most frustrating experience I’ve ever had, with any phone.
I decided to post this here for three reasons:
1. To inform others of my experience with this phone before they go out and buy it themselves
2. To inspire Huawei to do better
3. To simply just vent
So, why am I returning this phone and what has been so frustrating about it?
Here are the bullet points:
• Huawei’s modifications to Android are terrible. Probably the worst OEM ‘skin’ out there.*
• EMUI is a buggy mess with extremely poor memory management. Especially when using a homescreen replacement app like Nova Launcher.
• The cameras produce great results. Sometimes. But it often struggles with getting the exposure right, the video output is choppy with disappointing stabilisation (which can’t be turned off!) and crashes all the time.
• NFC just doesn’t want to play nice with my Banking app making it so that I’ve been unable to perform contactless payments like I’ve been doing effortlessly with my previous two phones.
• Huawei’s implementation of notifications and the status bar icons introduce a ton of usability issues to the point where the phone simply fails to effectively inform the user about incoming alerts and messages.
If you’ve made it this far, I’m sure that by now you either recognise some (or all) of the things I’ve described or have simply become curious about what I mean by this.
Let’s go through them one by one.
Huawei’s version of Android
As I’ve said above, EMUI is probably the worst OEM ‘skin’ out there. It looks ‘fine’, I guess. But if you’ve used pretty much any other recent version of Android before (either stock or modified) then you’ll feel ‘handicapped’ using the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.
No access to notifications or quick toggles from the lock screen. No way to set a live wallpaper as the lock screen background. The default ‘Home screen’ is 'ok'. Just ok, but not great. I get that Huawei aims to simplify things for its less tech-savvy customers… but when you have the option to either have the ‘iOS’ solution of having all apps on the home screen or use the traditional Android solution of having an app drawer, then don’t use an old fashioned, outdated ‘drawer’ button to bring up all the apps. Just take Google’s lead here. Makes you wonder what Huawei’s UX / research team has been up to these last 2 years.
Plus, why on earth is there no option to open the notifications panel using a ‘slide down’ gesture from the Home Screen?*
Instead, you have the option to add a ‘button’ to the navigation menu across the bottom which allows you to quickly open the notifications panel. But then they decide to re-arrange ALL the other icons (Recent Apps, Home, Back) so that they are aligned in the center of the screen and I keep pressing the wrong button when I rely on muscle memory when trying to hit the Home button. Incredibly frustrating and just very, very poor UX design.
EMUI: A buggy mess that doesn’t play nice with homescreen replacement apps like Nova Launcher
So what? Most of the above can be fixed by installing Nova Launcher, right? Like on any other Android phone. Well, guess what? Nope.
Because on the Mate 20 Pro, things just break all over the place when using alternative home screen (Launcher) apps.*
• The memory management is so poor that it effectively becomes impossible to be productive. Apps refresh to their original state when switching between them to simply copy and paste some text over from one to the other. Spotify is killed in the background while using Chrome with as many as 3 tabs open.
• Navigation Gestures stop working properly, causing the ‘swipe up to go Home’ gesture to briefly bring up the ‘Recent Apps’ switcher first
• The ‘Recent Apps’ switcher can only be navigated by pressing on an app preview that is perfectly centred. Tapping any of the apps on the sides simply just closes the Recent Apps switcher, taking you back to the Home screen and ignoring your input. It’s infuriating, since it works perfectly fine when using Huawei’s own Home Screen.
• Huawei’s ’Themes’ app (and probably other apps) doesn’t respect Android’s native Back button behaviour, resulting in weird, inconsistent and frustrating navigating behaviour.
The Cameras: Sometimes great for photography, terrible for video
I’ve already said pretty much everything I wanted to say about the cameras. The cameras produce great results. Sometimes. And I love the wide angle lens. Unfortunately, the camera/software often struggle with getting the exposure right and the video output is choppy with disappointing stabilisation. This can’t be turned off, by the way… so if I wanted to mount my phone to a gimbal, there’s really no point since the actual image is already cropped.
Also… no 4K 60fps is a big disappointment, but I should have read up about this before buying the phone I guess. Still, is it odd that I assume a late 2018 ‘flagship’ phone would have it by now? I don’t think so.
Furthermore, the camera app crashes all the time, or gets ‘stuck’ rendering the final image (the Gallery would display this image slightly darkened with a white ‘Loading…’ text on top of the photo). How can this be a thing, Huawei? This is not Beta software… but it certainly feels like it!
NFC doesn’t work properly
From the 4 days that I have had this phone, I must have spent at least 2 trying to get it set up with my Banking app (ING). An app that I have used with my last 2 smartphones to pay contactless without any issues. I have reinstalled the app, reset the phone, called my bank, called Huawei customer service to see if it was perhaps a known issue with this phone model… all to no avail. Unacceptable to me.
Notifications / Status bar icons usability issues
Repeating what I wrote above; Huawei’s implementation of notifications and the status bar icons introduce a ton of usability issues to the point where the phone simply fails to effectively inform the user about incoming alerts and messages.
• Since there is limited space due to the notch, you would have thought that Huawei allows people to hide any icon they don’t need (NFC, Bluetooth, etc) so that the more important icons can be seen.
• The lock screen allows up to 3 notifications to be seen concurrently. It’s impossible to interact with any notification that lives in the ‘more (+)’ group. You have to unlock the phone, reach out all the way to the top (since you can’t assign a ‘swipe down to show notifications gesture) and then drag down the notifications panel.*
I constantly felt uninformed and kind of nervous about missing out on important notifications using this phone. And this is on Android, the OS that does notifications RIGHT… usually. Not when it’s a Huawei phone, apparently.
In conclusion, I really wanted to like this phone… but I simply can’t justify keeping it. In the past I would have looked for other ways to 'fix' these issues, look into custom ROMs or check the headlines for info on future updates... but I simply don't have the time and patience for that anymore. When I spend this kind of money on a premium phone this day and age, I expect it to work. And to work well.
This phone simply doesn't.
Reading through this forum and catching up on Huawei’s track record where it concerns updates and bug fixes didn’t inspire much confidence either.
I sincerely hope for those of you that decide to stick with the phone that Huawei get their act together in the near future. In fact, I hope to one day buy another Huawei phone and find myself pleasantly surprised… but right now, I would not recommend this phone to anyone.

To be honest, I felt your pain with most of these issues, except NFC.
I use Action launcher instead of the standard Huawei one. It wasn't until yesterday, when I deleted the stock launcher that ALL of my issues disappeared. It seems the stock launcher is also responsible for some of the recent apps issues too.
That would be my suggestion. Whatever launcher you use, set it as default and delete the stock one via ADB.

This is very interesting... and I would have tried it if I still had the phone.
But I suppose it still wouldn't have solved the issues with the poor lock screen and notifications implementation.

I have just tried that. The phone feels snappier now. RAM management more stable. Thanks.

when you do this, you only have vertical task manager, right?
Wow, you've described my relationship with this phone perfectly (except NFC, I've not yet set up Google pay). Very interested in what's been said about deleting the stock launcher, I'll be trying that tonight
i'm just not convinced with the camera.. as you say sometimes its good. But not good enough to be a reliable camera. Video is disappointing. I fear buyers remorse will soon set in and i'll be stuck with it for two years. Also hesitant on the amount of updates we'll get for this... Shame. Back to the pixel 2xl it is.. trusty old workhorse!

Once stock launcher is removed, only the left/right back gestures work. You need to install another app (like Fluid) to enable full gestures.

Thanks for confirming that for me.

I agree and have been experiencing most of you issues mentioned. Nova launcher apparently is a mess to use and camera performance even at 60fps was choppy. I've been trying to talk to guys at huawei about the camera performance since P20 pro and all I kept getting as a response was it's fixed in the upcoming update.
I don't know how or why most of the youtbers or people who own the phone never mention choppy frame rates....almost to a point where `I thought it must be something I did wrong!
nfc works flawlessly here. please check default apps for payments. mine was defaulted to sim card then i switched to pay and it worked amazing
minor os issues, this phone is still a beast.
To uninstall the default huawei launcher run
Code:
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.huawei.android.launcher
I totally agree with most of what's said - "the most beautiful, disappointing phone" sums it up perfectly.
I really, really want to like this phone and I do about 99% of the time but then there are these constant, daily reminders of suckiness (notfications, nfc, bluetooth, video, etc) that totally ruin the experience. I will return mine and wait for the P30 or the S10 (probably S10 for the headphone jack).
I totally disagree with all of this. I'm a power user who gets a new flagship twice a year! I've had everything from the s6, s7, note4, note 5, note 8, and currently own a note 9. I thought the note 9 was the best phone I've ever used till I got the mate pro. I'm selling the note 9 ASAP, enough said!!! This things a beast and a beauty to use and hold. Can't say enough about the fluidity and battery life of this phone. I'm in love with it, I might actually keep it for at least a year till the mate 30 pro comes out.

For those who prefer disabling instead of uninstalling (meaning they can just enable again if they have second thought):
Code:
pm disable-user --user 0 com.huawei.android.launcher
To enable again:
Code:
pm enable --user 0 com.huawei.android.launcher
Ppl still use lockscreen? Last time I saw lockscreen was right before fpr sensors were introduced, half a decade ago.
Hi everyone
Hope you are all well!
Last night brought the dreaded EMUI 9 update to my HUAWEI P20 PRO. Before the update, I’m sure some of you also have the same, but I had downloaded the app; HUAWEI Theme , with the blue icon. I specifically downloaded this app for the use of the iOS 12 emoji
Whilst the update is great in many aspects, my emojis have stopped working in certain places around my phone. For example, snapchat text, facebook and facebook messenger have all stopped working with the emoji. But Twitter, and actual text messages have not. Whilst the emojis are not working in snapchat, notifications still come up with the iOS emojis.
I’m sure some of you are also having the same problem, so wondering if anybody can help?
Thanks in advance.
Those are not the only things "broken". Actually the screen lock timer has disappeared - turn screen off and the screen locks after a set time. I had it in 5 minutes. Now it locks instantly or no lock at all. Also the pie animations that kinda reassemble the iOS do not work on Nova launcher unless if you're using the huawei launcher. Meh... I'm thinking of unlocking the BL and install vanilla android on it
I wish i was somewhat knowledgeable with phones so i knew what you meant by changing it. But i am actually so peeved that it works sometimes and not others, that i am actually thinking of moving back to apple!
God forgive me now!
Hello everyone,
I'd like to know if somebody has a solution to this issue because it's annoying, not only for me, but for every EMUI 9 users.
Thank you very much?
My emoji is 100% fine,
but am root user and using Apple Sans Fransisco Fonts w/Emoji installed as Magisk Module.
as per other issues, i can't really relate,
i always turn off animations on any phone i use. And i always set my phone to lock instantly combined with smart lock on body detection enable as well.
