Slim cases recommendation? Beware of UAG Plasma Series! - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Accessories

I've been a fan of UAG for quite some time, however i think the Note 8 UAG Plasma series has a huge design flaw... The S-PEN cutout is way too big and if the phone is dropped on that corner you will either get a horrible dent or end up with a cracked screen.
I dropped my Gold Note 8 2 months ago from about 30cm on tiles floor and got this horrible dent with the UAG case on
Couple of days ago dropped it again from pocket height and landed again on the same corner and the screen got a hairline crack starting from that corner.
I contacted UAG about this and they simply refunded me, saying all their Plasma series have the same cutouts.
I went ahead and purchased a new Black Note 8 as it was no point sending the gold one for repair. I'm looking for a quality slim case that doesn't leave the S-Pen area too exposed.
Any recommendations?

Too expensive to have the AMOLED replaced and the frame, so just bought a new one and will sell the gold one for whatever is worth.

They said "Do keep in mind that any replacement case will come with the same cutouts"
However, this is definately a design flaw, they claim that is military drop tested, yet the cutout for the S-Pen is so big and the smallest drop in the right corner will damage the phone...

Did they offer a replacement code for a new case?

They refunded me.
Edit:
After the first small drop and dent, i went to google about the issue and there were negative reviews on Amazon about the cutouts.

First, thanks for making us aware. Second I'm totally agreeing with you. There IS a design defect where protection in every corner is not possible due to over sized mold cut out. Looking at my third party 10 dollar case, the rubber/ plastic corner, there is a larger lip that extends just short of the s-pen but does not over lap. I have three other cases and all are the same design. Lastly, I used a dremel tool to attach a small tether to the top corner of my case. Not only is it easier to remove from my back pocket, but the tether ensures no slippage putting in or out getting in or out of my car. Sad that it took only two drops for the crack.
I believe you have a case (no pun) against UAG for misleading advertising claims. You should get a demand letter couriered to their head office. Maybe make a 50% deal on your replacement phone?
UAG needs to make a recall or risk being sued.

You're right, i don't have anything against UAG either, i used their cases on most of my devices and had 0 problems with them.
I am curious if anyone else had a problem with their Note 8 Plasma series due to the S-Pen cutout. I'm sure the cutout could be made a little bit different to avoid direct contact with the device in case of a drop.

Thx for pointing that out. That was one of my first thoughts after receiving two UAG Plasmas and the reason why i've sold both and switched to Tech21. There the S-Pen cut out is protected much better. The whole bottom part of the UAGs is to weak in my opinion. Good that i've not dropped my Note with one of these on.

I'll keep beating the Samsung drum here. The clear case they make is superb. I don't even know I have a case on the phone, it even feels like glass on the back the plastic is so hard. No yellowing or scratches at all on mine going on 3 weeks of every day use. Adds nearly no size to the phone and it's 10 bucks on Amazon. You'll do no better. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B074G917W3/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've checked it before and looks great, but there is no drop protection at all
I still love the UAG Plasma's i have and would like to keep using them, but i'm really afraid of the S-Pen cutout because it already cost me a new Note 8 and the other problem i have, there is no decent screen protector that will fit with this case.

I have the UAG Monarch case and it seems the cutouts are also large. I've dropped my phone a few times already but luckily, haven't hit the S-pen area.

Haha, i wasn't that lucky.. dropped 2 times from small height and landed on the SPen corner and the 2nd drop cracked the glass.:crying:

I also want some good slim protection so I ordered Tech 21 evo tactical.

Something that doesn't come up on here often but I have.
The Gear4 picadilly case for the note 8.
It feels good in the hand and used D3O for impact absorption. I found that it was too slimmline for me , hence gone back to my wallet type cases.

Best Protective Case for the Note 2?

After searching the threads and being horrified by pictures of smashed screens, I don't think I will take my Note 2 out until I get a protective case! It recently arrived and being so used to my HTC phone which I have dropped many times and has survived falling from my lap as I get out of the car, flying out of my bag and so on, I don't think I can take this risk at all with the Note 2. A little scared it is so fragile but I am wondering if those who have had the phone for much longer have found the best way to protect the phone. I guess the days of walking down the street checking my messages are over for now (plus being afraid someone will take it from me!).
I don't mind flipcases (especially as it covers the front) but most of the cases I have seen so far only cover the back but this doesn't protect the screen, so looking for something that will protect it all round.
I had been sporting a naked note 2 until a couple days ago, but after it slipped out of my pocket while I opened the door of a moving car going 15mph (only resulting some chips on a few of the corners thank god haha) I had to get a case. I read lots of reviews and decided to get the black UAG case and I love it. I like the way the phone feels in my hand with it and it feels very protected. There are cases that are more protective but they add more bulk, this doesn't mean that the UAG won't protective because to me this thing still feels like fort Knox in my hand with it hah

Wow a lot of reviews, thank you for that.
I guess I wanted extra protection for the front (when not in use) so the UAG is on hold. Went for the cheap flipcase in stead.
I have been using the Otterbox Defender for a couple of months and love it. Since I have dropped and had to replace two phones, I need the heavy duty protection. It's got a built in screen protector that covers the screen like a window. I like the fact that it makes the phone bulky, easier to hold.
Otterbox
I didn't want to give in to the Otterbox. But after I dropped my Note and scratching the S Pen, I did. I absolutely love it and it's by far the best case I've ever had. I even got one for my daughter's RAZR. She loves it also.
I've had my phone for a few days now and have really got used to the feel of it (light and smooth) but I know I shouldn't risk it. I don't really like the look of the bulky cases, and since I am a girl I want something more girly I guess, but I've gone ahead and ordered a cheap flipcase that was reviewed on this forum. Will see how that one goes for now and will upgrade as I find something for me.

I swear by the uag cases. I've dropped my phone down concrete stairs while it's (thankfully) been in a uag and there was not a single scratch to be seen as a result of the experience. The Otterbox is just too cumbersome especially if you are like me and often switch out the batteries.

I have the Otterbox, which I absolutely love, but it feels like the size of the phone doubles when I have it on my phone. I found another case manufactured by Seidio. It's the Seidio KONVERT combo and it has a hard outer case that goes on the phone and another rubber case that covers the hard case and is braced by a skeleton type covering. It sounds like it would be bigger than the OtterBox, but it actually isn't. THe phone looks and feels slimmer and it looks more elegant, where the OtterBox gives the phone a more ruggedized look. As far as protection, I am deployed and have dropped my phone a couple times and I haven't had any issues with it at all. Plus, you can take the rubber outer shell off and still have an good-looking inner case as well. Highly recommend it, as well as the OtterBox.

My case trials........

For the verizon model.
First I tried the Incipio Feather. LOVED it. The slim profile, the rubbery grip, the clean look. But, it didn't offer enough protection around the ends or screen edges for me.
Cheapie on ebay as seen here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/for-LG-G2-V...DA_Cases&var=580258822391&hash=item4179df7db7 This one was actually surprisingly nice and one I'd used for the past 3 weeks. But....the white discolored insanely fast, it turned orange from just skin oils and such. Plus getting the top piece off if you need to remove the phone for some reason is nearly impossible without cracking it.
Enter the Incipio Dual Pro. Ding ding ding we have a winner. This thing is perfect IMO. Just enough rubber liner to cover the entire phone, and the combination around the edge of the phone screen is thin and not bulky yet plenty to offer great protection. Really really great case IMO. Think I'm done searching at this point.
Thanks! I just ordered the incipio dual pro. I was using the quick window case but I slowly began to dislike it.

The AT&T version of the DualPro is rather thin: I wouldn't have felt comfortable dropping it in that case - it didn't feel much more substantial than the Feather. nor does it have much lip to protect the front. And the AT&T one didn't come with a holster; I don't see one listed on the Incipio site for the Verizon version, so I feel confident saying that it doesn't.
Not going to drop it on it's face for no good reason. Anything can happen and I'd rather not take that risk intentionally.
The lip is rather thin, the case isn't that thick, but I don't plan to be dropping it off a balcony either. I wanted a slim profile but full coverage case for the short drops, bumps and scrapes protection. If I was truly worried about a LONG drop with screen shattering potential, then I'd definitely have considered a larger case for sure. But for my needs, the DualPro was perfect.
And it's definitely a verizon version.

It has been dropped on tile, hardwood, concrete including face down and both case and phone are holding up with not scratches or damage.

Nope, got black/black. Going to eventually Di-Noc in white the hard piece and see if I can wrap it tight enough around the edges to not cause installation issues, but fine with the dual black right now.
Well, mine just got a face down drop on to the wood floor from about 3 feet up, courtesy of my son who knocked if off the shelf I had it on. It's fine I'm happy to report!
Ok, for those of you who wanted a drop test, my phone got one today. From about 7 feet off the ground. I was at work at my plant, had my phone on top of my lunch bag on top of a large metal computer station next to our break area. Someone called me and the phone vibrated it's way down the bag and off the top of the work station, and according to a co-worker who was sitting there, it smacked off the corner of the keyboard drawer that was open on the way down.
I figured it fell when I walked up and saw my lunch bag half flat (it was empty, one of those soft cooler bags), and I feared the worst because it was straight down to cement.
Both the phone and Incipio Dual Pro case are absolutely unscathed. I'm sold.
so i got the Incipio hybrid one, the one you guys are talking about it, and it fell on its face.. noo problem.
i love the case but it fell off from my desk the other day and it cracked from a corner towards the buttons
honestly that's all that was, hope it'll take more accidental beatings and survive.
i really dig the case regardless.. just don't chuck it.
May I make a suggestion I hate plastic or Rubber and I love Leather and glass. For work I need to look great (I need to look money lol) and I found this company Verus from South Korea and then I found they had cases on eBay. Pros: all leather, Holds my ID and Credit Card and very well made, like VERY well made. Cons: took 3 weeks to get it.
Anyway I bought the Black and red leather one to match my watch and bought a black tempered glass screen protector they look Awesome

Hey can you post a photo or two of the Verus case that you got?
I was looking at ordering it, but was not sure if the edges came up to protect the screen if the screen is flat on a table?
thank you

Just received the Ghostek Atomic 2.0 Case. Even though Screen is not glass does not feel that back. No stickiness like plastic films. But for now just had it on for some hours so can't really say for long run yet.
It is a bit wider like a little over 1/4" more than the UAG case. Which adds to black borders on the front as seen on the pictures. So if you already had trouble using it with one hand, this would cause a bit more trouble.
The thickness is about the same as the UAG case when both are facing screen down.
This case advertises Waterproof but has 2 openings for the speaker grill on top and the home button on bottom. I would expect water could get in through those openings. Screen is dot matrix.
The look of the case for me is nice and does not make it look ugly in my perspective. As because the screen guard as they call it make it look like the screen is showing more than some cases that adds front black plastic borders on top and bottom.
The one thing is you might want to use wireless charging more due to having to open up ports more often if using a usb charger.
Here are some pictures I took. Sorry about quality. The best Camera I have is the GS7 edge. lol.
http://imgur.com/a/osNxm
Right now I'm using it with the TANAAB Screen protector.
I'll post more about it. But first reactions seems to be a good case but would depend on how you would see it and if the 1/4" width bigger than a UAG case would be a drawback or not.
It Seems that Ghostek send several out to Mobilefun or Uviyo in batches but haven't shipped through their main site.
Update:
Update about the openings mentioned above. The waterproof works and does not get inside case if there's nothing that raises the area where the openings are. I had the TANAAB TGSP that doesn't go full length of the phone let water in but when removed and tested no water went in. So waiting to test it with a similar TGSP like GPEL2 that fully extends the the phone and see how that works.
When With TANAAB. Sensitivity didn't change and could provide good protection if needed as the outside screen is just a thin plastic film.
Just wanted to point this out.

screen cracked with Zagg protector and otterbox defender

Didn't believe it when I saw my screen. Fell from my shoulder after a call and landed on the wood floor in my horse. The zagg protector flew off and was about a foot from my phone. It was cracked all over originating in the corner and middle. My actual screen had a crack curving from the left top corner from edge to edge. Well anyone that has these watch out how you drop them. The screen protector won't stay on very well with the edge adhesive protector. Never buying them again. Apparently the defender fails at defending. Had otterbox for many years without any incident. Watch out people.
Damn that sucks. Sorry for your loss. Starting to wonder if even my bulky case with integral protector will do any good if an Otterbox failed you.
Does the Defender also leave the screen proud of the edges of the case?
Those stick on screen protectors do not work well with the edges. All the protectors ive tried that just stick on like that dont stay on for me for more than a week. Im currently rocking a whitestone dome with a spigen tough armor case and ive dropped this phone like 6 times so far. 2 Down my wooden stairs.
Sorry to heat that your phone didnt make the fall though Hopefully you can get it repaired or replaced....

No the case is higher than the screen. It dropped on the top left corner. The crack goes over the sensors up there. I'm with Verizon and asurion said they were backordered so no replacement. Plus it 200 for replacment
Those sticker PET films that I use are only good for scratches not drops, agreed. hence why I use a leather wallet style case.
OP sorry for your loss, hopefully Samsung will replace with a 300 bucks charge, I think thats the going rate here in teh USA for screen replacement from them?
that sucks sorry about that - can you upload a pic of the carnage and your setup? thanks

Wasn't intentional. But after my friend went through a similar thing with the same setup, I wanted to put out a PSA that got people's attention.
Just dropped mine yesterday. Wearing sweat pants with short pockets, my phone slipped out of my pocket after taking a seat, and fell to the floor, the edge of my N8 hitting the edge of a brick step. Thank God, my phone came out unscathed, with the exception of a broken Whitedome SP, and a slightly chipped 19.99 Official Samsung plastic cover protector.

Sent that back and tried another thinking it was my fault.. nope the second one cracked on its own. Called verizon and got a credit they them sent me one of theirs and after 2 weeks my screen was full of lint and dirt and would barley stick to screen. I am now convinced anyone with a curved screen just better be extra cautious with their device because it's difficult to keep a screen protector on long... if only other box would .and the full defender case with glass protector attached like they did for previous devices
I bought my Galaxy Note 8 in September 2017. I have a SPECK Presidio Grip military grade case and later got the Otterbox Defender thinking it was the case Since purchasing the ZAGG $49.99 from Verizon in March 2018, I have had 3 screens replaced. 2 within one week's time as it also CRACKED ON ITS OWN! I am very careful with my phone, even went as far as purchasing a Michael KORS phone wallet. I agree with one of the other customers. It must be the curved screen and the Otterbox no longer come with a protective screen over the case.

Mines also cracked with outter box defender ,I will never buy outter again
Sorry for your loss. Might want to consider SPIGEN for your case. Ive been using it for several phones for several years. Ive dropped them several times and the screen never cracked. I also used their tempered glass but I used Whitestone for Notw 8.

Otterbox commuter is still great, but yes I'd stay away from the Defender from now on (due to the hard inner shell design).
This has me worried; I'm using the Whitestone Dome with a standard Caseology case.. I've dropped my phone multiple times and I've had no issues save for the protector lifting on one corner at one point; I was considering a bulkier case- do you guys think it's still worth it?

help with case/screen protector ASAP

Hey guys, my gray note 8 with Verizon arrives tomorrow and I'm kind of stressed out because I can't find a good case / screen protector on Amazon. All the screen protectors have horrible reviews and I want this thing protected as soon as I get it. There was one case that seemed good until I read the few bad reviews. It came with a tempered glass protector but some people said it would start coming off. It was the Zizo bolt series. I'm hoping someone can give me some recommendations so I can try and order them tonight and have them get here at the latest Wednesday.

I wonder how that one compares with this iq shield?
Galaxy Note 8 Screen Protector [2 Pack][Case Friendly][Not Glass], IQ Shield LiQuidSkin Full Coverage Screen Protector for Samsung Galaxy Note 8 HD Anti-Bubble [S Pen Compatible] https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072W8X2SK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_phAxAbH8JF2YC
It's only 7 dollars I'd just buy it and try it.

I have it and i like it. Once, this case save my note 8 from been broken, i drop it in bathroom on the floor accidentally. 0 damage
About screen protector, you need just regular silicone film. You can ask for it in every shop. I think its the best solution.

I have these on two Note 8's here and they are working well so far. I have a Spigen case and my son a Otterbox Commuter. Just line up the protector with the sensor and speaker cut outs just enough to not cover them and make sure the sides are even and they work great. ILLUMI AquaShield is another to consider. I thought those had a more glass like appearance.
I had the Incipio dual layer and it was too bulky and cheaply made. The 2 pieces didnt line up evenly. So I bought the Alcantara case and couldn't be happier. I dont use screen protectors though. I have never dropped a phone. If i did I still got my pixel or nexus 6p to use while it gets fixed. I went for Samsung care this time around. Only $99 deductible is pretty good.

Protection from breaking is only part of the reason for using a screen protector. My main reason is for scratch protection. The glass is very soft when it comes to scratches.

Yeah I've read this too. I'm always a bit skeptical though about people's stories of "easily damaged/scratched" devices. I've owned several phones over the years and have not had scratching issues outside of the normal wear and tear. And the scratches never where noticeable unless you looked for them. Definitely not with the screen on. There is never a shortage of "screen easily scratches" threads either for any device you look at. Then you can go watch jerry rig everything literally scratch them all at the same level. Even iPhones sapphire glass scratches at the same level. I just don't see the need for another layer of glass that will look just like the layer of glass I put it over in the same amount of time. By the time it had enough scratches to bother me I would have all ready moved on to another device. But I keep something at most 2 years anyways. I do also never lay my phone on its screen and it's alone in my pocket or in my hand. That's it.

I'm talking from personal experience with the Note 8 and the S8 Plus.
And that "normal wear and tear" is what I'm trying to prevent. I like to keep my phones mint for resale value. But the S8 plus and Note 8 do scratch a LOT easier than my past phones. I unfortunately scratched my S8 plus the ONE day I used it naked. Not even sure how, as I am also very careful.
My Note 8 screen scratched in the area above the screen protector. Presumably from me wiping dust off the camera lense. Remember, dust and dirt is made from rocks eroding. Most rocks are made of minerals harder than your glass. All it takes is a spec of dirt...

Yeah for resale it definitely makes sense. Im kind of an electronics hoarder lol. My wife ends up giving away my old phones when I no longer use them. That's lame yours scratched all ready. I know dust is the number one scratching agent. I just have never had any issues. But I do believe you when you say yours scratched easily. I'm not here to discredit anyone. I suggest screen protectors all the time to people I know because they seem to always have cracks and scratches. I hope mine doesn't get scratched. But if it does then maybe I'll start using them.

Note 8 uses newer Gorilla Glass which is more impact resistant but less scratch resistant than before.

LOL, I cant afford to hoard. I change phones every six months (though I plan to make this Note 8 last at least a year) but i always have a primary and a backup phone. I had an S8+ with an S7 Edge as a backup. Now my Note 8 is my primary, and my S8+ is my backup. I love everything about my Note8, but I wish it was available in the same Coral Blue color as my S8+. Actually I liked the Coral Blue color of the S7 Edge the best. I wish they would bring that one back.
But to support my habit, I have to sell my phones for thr most I can, and generally buy used, mint devices.
Let's not also forgot about the back glass. I installed the Skinomi back wet applied protector on mine on day two of ownership. While cleaning the back in preparation for the film, I use strong light and magnification to help with dist removal , I noticed a tiny short scratch on the back glass. Probably caused by something that was in the case.

If you want good protection get either the Seidio or Otterbox, they are a little bulky but provide awesome protection. As for a screen protector I've had a smartphone since the T-Mobile G1, 18 or more phones with no screen protector and no scratches.

Sometime you can find them on amazon for about 1/2 the price from the OEM, don't try to save a few dollars on a case to protect a $1000.00 work of art.
