Amazon descriptions clearly state no fingerprint function. Is this accurate?
TIA!
@OldSkewler
Nope, it's on the power button.
For the future, I suggest using better information-sources about those devices, like gsmarena or the official Sony device page.
That is, if actually mean the XZ1c, since there's no ZX1 .
Amazon seller, listed as "Sony", clearly states no fingerprinting hence my question.
Any chance they offer a version without fingerprinting feature? I remember when I bought my Z5C that one of the versions didn't offer this feature.
Due to some licensing issues, sony-devices come without fingerprint capability in the US. This is however done software-side, so flashing a firmware from somwehere else than the US will enable the fingerprint reader. This may be the reason for the conflicting statements on Amazon. If the fingerprint reader is enabled, it has to be activated in settings, so you can chose to no use it.
American here. I got one from Amazon and flashed the Central Europe firmware to enable the fingerprint sensor. First phone I got with a biometric sensor!
Interesting.
First I was under the impression these Sony devices were pretty locked and hard to crack, I think this was the case back in 2015. Or maybe there are different levels of "cracking" and firmware updating is fairly simple? I am relatively new to this sort of thing.
Second, I also bought my Z5C from Amazon and fingerprinting was functioning off the box, no issues or need to change firmware.
Perhaps would be easier to purchase on eBay.
It's entirely possible that you bought the international version of the phone instead of the US version. I used the NewFlasher guide in order to get the fingerprint scanner working. I'm on T-Mobile with a European firmware so I don't have wi-fi calling, but I live in Silicon Valley so there's hardly any shortage of good signal for me.

The fingerprint feature is probably the only function that is disabled on an extremely high software level for the sole purpose of being able to officially sell in the US.
Otherwise, your impression of Sony phones is generally correct - while also incorrect at the same time.
Specifically, you'd be right when things involve Sony DRM related stuff.
On the other hand, Sony opens up a lot of their phones for development and contribution to AOSP.
As long as you aren't fixated on retaining DRM locked features, it's actually pretty simple to unlock and mess around with Sony devices (that are on the list).
A bit different question about fingerprint reader. Time after time I get notice "device was locked by administrator" and I need to enter pin as it does not unlock with fingerprint? Is it possible to avoid and always be able to unlock with fingerprint?

I'm guessing you have an app, which locks the screen - check in Settings > Lock screen & security > Device admin apps to see which apps have access to lock the screen, and then just go trial-and-error from there.

Nah, I don't think it's Find My Device. I was thinking it could be a lock screen app or a launcher, which could be the culprit, but it doesn't sound like you have any of those.
Exchange could cause this, if your work place has disabled the fingerprint reader as part of their security policy. You can press the icon, and see which policies are enforced. The only work around would be to use IMAP to fetch your mails instead. Or root your phone, and use an Xposed module to disable the security policy, but I wouldn't recommend it, as you would loose your DRM keys, and be left with a non-functional camera.

You are right - it was "power toggle" with screen lock option...
But it is still working quite strange. When I disabled power toggle to lock the screen, I actually do not need and fingerprint to unlock device. I can unlock simply by swipe. I thought fingerprint is instead of a pin, not instead of a swipe...
It is a bluetooth watch that is trusted device and does not require fingerprint to unlock...

eMail Exchange is the culprit.

Google Wallet on the Nexus 5 uses HCE (host card emulation) which puts the secure element "in the cloud" instead of a physical secure element on the phone. The old way with the secure element on the phone works fine without network connectivity because once provisioned it is exactly like an NFC credit card. On the Nexus 5 if your PIN has timed out and you're not connected to the internet then Wallet won't even let you open it, but if you have a long PIN timeout you can still use Wallet without internet connectivity.
Has anyone tried Google Wallet on the Nexus 5 without network connectivity? I'm wondering if this works because there is no secure element in the phone anymore, and it's emulated by software/cloud. I haven't gotten a chance to visit a store with NFC since I got my N5, just wondering if anyone has tried it.
On another note HCE sounds less secure than a secure element. If software is emulating a card, what's to stop a well written piece of malware from abusing it? Especially on a rooted phone or using some exploit for the app to gain root access on its own?
Basically, it sounds like Secure Element was technically a much better solution than HCE. The carriers and OEMs restricted access to it, but so was Google in their setup. It would have been better if they fixed THAT system. If carriers and OEMs can change the security policy to the Secure Element what's to stop them from disabling HCE?
I'd be interested in the answer to this as well. I used the n5 at CVS the other day and it worked perfectly but my signal was good at the time .
Honestly since the gnex days I've been so paranoid about the hardware secure element becoming bricked that I barely used it on the n4 due to constantly flashing new Roms. I don't even know of the n4 suffered from that problem but I always reset the wallet from within the app before reflashing.

Those secure elements sure are finicky! I don't understand why the brick. Apparently they brick if they think they are being tampered with, but why not just securely erase themselves instead of bricking? That way they can be re-provisioned instead of ruining a part of a $700 phone like what happened in my Note 2. I wasn't even flashing ROMs when it bricked. I was on a custom ROM and it was working great. I hadn't flashed a ROM in months and then one day I opened wallet and it instantly crashed. Kept crashing on start, so I wiped data and re-loaded it. Google Wallet never activated on that phone ever again. Always failed.
So no SE to brick is a nice thing about HCE, but just making the SE not brick-able would've been better. Requiring network connectivity (if it does) is a big fail. And it definitely does require network connectivity to enter the PIN in if it has timed out. I keep it at 15 minutes because I don't want someone stealing my phone and using it to buy ****.
Just tested it and I can confirm it does in fact work without internet connectivity. I put my PIN in to unlock it and then turned airplane mode on and then NFC back on by itself. Put my phone to the reader and the transaction went through. Then I turned on my internet and it downloaded the details. So if you don't mind the lack of security or if you use a passcode on the whole phone then you can set the timeout for wallet to never and not worry about needing internet when you want to use it to pay.

Part of the reason is that the Secure Element was such a prissy *****. Flashing a ROM, even a stock ROM, without first uninstalling wallet would immediately "brick" it and render it unusable. It's like your front door key not working if you changed your pants where you put your keys in.

Right, but they could probably make/configure secure elements to ERASE instead of BRICK when they think they're being tampered with.
Either way, HCE for Wallet works offline. It just now requires you to be online to enter your PIN in. Wish they'd change that.

They probably assume that legitimate implementations are "correct", and interpret anything unusual as a hacking attempt. If you're trying to exploit the SE but it bricks every time you try something, it will be an expensive endeavor. If it can't be reset, you cannot programmatically fuzz the protocol.

Anyone figure out how to have a lock screen and use touchless controls... you know... touchless? Giant gaping hole by Moto.
Whoa - documentation here https://motorola-global-portal.cust...a_id/94881/p/30,6720,8696/action/auth#privacy
This implies we have the ability to do this but I'm not seeing the setting anywhere???
How do I use Touchless Control with the lock screen?
Touchless Control now includes two new features to make using Touchless Control with the lock screen easier. The first is voice pin entry. If you use a numeric pin code you will be prompted by Touchless Control when you encounter the lock screen to speak your pin. Simply say your pin code to unlock the phone to complete your request. The second feature is to allow the Google application to run in front of the lock screen without needing to unlock the phone. This feature requires you to agree to the terms and conditions before you use it. Enabling the feature can be done by agreeing to the notification or turning the feature on manually within Settings -> Touchless Control
Using Open Mic+ seems to be a viable alternative. Does it use the low power core from Moto though?

It's a necessity that it will not work as you want it if you secure your phone (there's really no way to have your phone be secure and has full access to the touchless controls). Your best bet is to buy something like a Cobra Tag alarm and use it as a trusted bluetooth. Turn it on/carry it with you whenever you don't want to have to unlock your phone. I use my car's bluetooth to keep my phone unlocked while driving. It works great because you can wake the phone up and tell google now to navigate somewhere or ask about the traffic all without touching your phone. I think the trusted bluetooth is another great feature that Motorola included that separates it from other phones out there currently.
I've also been beta testing the new SkipLock app for it's developer. It allows you to disable the lock screen when you're connected to trusted wifi points like at home and work. I've been using it a couple days and it has been working well.

I use tasker + secure settings to keep my phone unlocked when within range of both my work or home wifi. I feel secure enough at work that I'm not too worried about having it unlocked. Anything extremely sensitive is locked up anyway. I also use my truck's BT as a trusted device which keeps it unlocked there as well.
So basically my phone is unlocked unless i"m not in my normal places.

Did you follow any specific Tasker guide on how to set that up? I have tried setting it up and haven't have much luck.
I have however just tried Skipunlock and it works well on my Moto X with 4.2.2.
Provided I can get it to work properly, I would rather use Tasker so that I can set it up to unlock when "near" a wifi network rather than being connected.

I've been using this setup for a while. I'm sure I didn't just figure it out but saw it somewhere but I don't have any idea where. The only gotchya is that with 4.4 you need to use the beta version of secure settings.
I use pattern lock, so I just create a task when connected to wifi to disable pattern lock. Secure Settings does need to have the 'helper app' installed too.

Here's the two Tasker projects I've been using to unlock my device while connected to a "safe" Wifi network. One of the projects maintains a set of variables that can be used as states or referenced within tasks. The other project handles the locking and unlocking, and depends on the first project. It's was working fine on my Galaxy Nexus for a long time, and appears to work fine on the Moto X as well.
There's a lot in the "states" project that's not needed for locking/unlocking, but it comes in handy for other things. You can probably just change the "Wifi Connected" state to a "Wifi Near" in the myTRUSTEDWIFI profile, and get rid of the Wait action and uncheck the "if" box in the remaining action in the exit task.
Yes!!!! New version of touchless control fixes this!!!

I was just getting used to the fingerprint scanner after setting up my phone and went to add my VPN connection. It seems there is a bug(feature?) where you can not enable VPN connections while using the fingerprint scanner lock screen. Why it would force you to disable a main selling point of the device to use the VPN connects is beyond me...
Aside from how strange the request was I switched to passcode lockscreen protection and was able to add a VPN connection. However, now I can not seem to turn VPN support OFF or to get the fingerprint scanner back ON. The option is grayed out in my options menu with this message "Turned off by Administrator, encryption policy or credential storage"
Any ideas? As a bonus the VPN connect did not even work! It connects perfectly from my S3, but this S5 seems to hate VPNs?
Can't speak to the built-in vpn settings, but perfectly able to use OpenVPN and fingerprint security without any problems.

I was just going to post an update saying I solved it by switching to OpenVPN. Updated my pfSense router, setup the server and exported the client file to my OpenVPN app.... Worked!
However, I still was not able to set the fingerprint lock screen back. It turns out you must delete ALL your VPN profiles(the one I had that didn't work) in the settings menu for the option to become available again. Moral is avoid the built in VPN support like the plague if you can and use OpenVPN,
But that would be true anyway OpenVPN is arguably one of the more secure VPN protocols....IPSEC is probably another good one, but with such....umm....not great implementation of it in android OS, always happier to use another very safe and secure alternative....
Fingerprint and VPN on S5
The answer to the original post is that Android requires a higher level of security to store secure access gateways like VPN's that could grant access to entire business data systems. Samsung rates its finger print sensor as medium. Perhaps medium might even be a step too high especially after it was fooled soon after launch with lifted fingerprints on tape and rubber blocks. Its akin to the facial recognition security option of earlier Android models that was bypassed using printed photos held up in front of the phone.
If you want a VPN in your S5, then you will have to forget fingerprint security and go for the higher level pin or password.
If you have made this mistake and ended up in this forum because your fingerprint option is now disabled, then you will have to delete all of the manual VPN's that you have entered. You then need to reboot your phone and re-check that all VPN are now missing because if you have an updated security profile, it may make the VPN profiles hidden and you will only see them on reboot.
Once the VPN profiles are all fully deleted the fingerprint option will return as a medium security.
I agree with earlier suggestions that if you want the fingerprint to work along with having VPN access, then the best option is to setup an OpenVPN connection. It works fine.
Help!

I found this post after I installed FoxFi on my Galaxy S5. I've heard that FoxFi creates a VPN, so I thought this fix might work for me. I uninstalled FoxFi and removed FoxFi's admin access then tried a reboot but I'm still not able to use the fingerprint. Do I need to do a hard reboot? Any thoughts?
Samsung S5 solutions
I'd just like to chime in and thanks to those who suggested the change to OpenVPN. This worked:
1) Deleted current VPN
2) Change screen lock to fingerprint (or whatever you like, I suppose)
3) I changed from PPTP to OpenVPN (I use StrongVPN), downloaded their client app for Android
4) Using their client app, I can now login to VPN using OpenVPN
5) lock screen still functions as normal.
What a pain. So lucky I enabled the Samsung remote before this happened as I got a bug where the phone crashed at the PIN entry screen and I was unable to unlock the phone with the PIN. So, S5 users, do enable "Remote Control" in your settings so you can unlock your phone via internet.

If you delete/remove the security credentials it will work again. It took me a while just trying everything to get it to work again but this fixed it. You just have to do that after using VPN.
Is there any other way to enable the finger print unlock option?
I use StrongVPN too... and I am in China right now. OpenVPN doesn't work well here somehow (confirmed by StrongVPN support staff), and it would disconnect or get no internet access randomly. I was forced to use PPTP for a more stable connection. I have set up a VPN router using the main account (PPTP now, but I am able to change it to openVPN if I want...but then it won't be stable), and I have an addon account (extra $2 per month) and it can only be PPTP (I won't be able to change it to anything else). Right now I have the addon PPTP account set up on my S5.
Basically I can only use PPTP right now. Is there any other way to enable the finger print on screen lock?
Is it a bug or done on purpose by the manufacturer? Will it be fixed in the near future?

Hi guys,
Let's put this into context for a minute. Android is assuming that if you're using the built-in VPN functionality of the phone, then it's for corporate use/access. As such, the security on the phone needs to be at a maximum in order to avoid a potential security vulnerability if you lose your phone. If you lose your phone, or if it gets stolen, a malicious user may intentionally access your corporate network via the VPN connection and this can result in some serious issues. Therefore, if you're going to use the BUILT-IN VPN, the the phone requires you to change the lock method to one that is considerably more secure than the fingerprint scanner, which has very easy and known work-arounds and much easier to hack than a PIN or password.
If you delete your VPN account from the system settings, then you will be able to re-enable the fingerprint security on your lock screen. Pretty simple.
If you REALLY want to use the fingerprint scanner along with a VPN connection, you can see if the VPN you want to use supports OpenVPN, as that protocol is not supported by the OS natively, and therefore, there are no security restrictions on the phone to use the app. Alternatively, you can try to find a VPN Client app that doesn't rely on the phone's built-in VPN functionality.
Hope that makes sense....

That is strange and I'm not sure. What kind of VPN did you set up? OpenVPN? L2TP/IPSEC? PPTP? I would contact the VPN provider and see if they can help you troubleshoot. Sorry, wish I was of greater help....
I have the same problem, I installed the openVPN connect app which forced me to switch to password on the lock screen. I then uninstalled the app but that still did not restore the fingerprint option. I checked the built-in VPN and there are none. I can't figure out how to restore the fingerprint option. I hope someone can please help me!

Unfortunately:cyclops:, they consider that a security issue. So unless you use a hack, you are SOOL.
I suppose it is a bit of a risk but the range of NFC is so limited. Too small to penetrate one's pocket or read from a distance. The only thing I used it for was in the car to toggle WiFi and Bluetooth which kicked off a chain reaction to start/stop Pandora streaming. Now I have to wakeup the phone first to scan NFC and connect BT. Not that big an inconvenience but I did like the option.

It's no more a security risk than being able to enable "Ok Google" when the screen is locked. Not being able to to use NFC when the screen is locked has always annoyed me and was glad Xposed allowed me to do it with KitKat, alas no more. Even my work Blackberry, any current BB10 model and supposedly the most secure of the OSes, allows me to enable NFC when not locked.
Lost in translation?

We are not talking about being able to enable NFC when the screen is not locked. We are talking about having NFC enabled, and the device is sleeping with screen off, not being able to have NFC detect tags or what not without first turning screen on then also unlocking the device. I think you know this but just must of typed it wrong. If not, NFC works great with screen on once past the lock screen. I never disable NFC, I use it the same as the previous post. Getting in car, turns on bluetooth and then launches Pandora and GPS.
With the new Android Auto app and a supporting head unit, all you have to do when you get in your car is plug your phone into a USB port and everything else is automatic. Yeah, one great thing about Nexus 6 and mobile hands free tech.

You're correct, it's a miss-type and I wrote "unlocked" instead of "locked" - corrected.
I too also always keep NFC enabled, but having to unlock the phone is a real nuisance, thankfully as I also keep Bluetooth on now I can set my in-car to be a trusted device that disables the lock, so once the the connection is made I know I can just tap the phone without worrying. But now I don't even do that as I get Tasker to detect the connection and do it for me
I'm bumping the hell outa this thread. Just bought 20 of my first NFC tags to use various places just to find out NFC is disabled when the screen is off!? Mega-fail.
Anyone find any way to do this or is there a ROM that supports this yet that anyone knows of?

i just wake up the device with s2w and then use NFC for various actions including unlocking the screen ( i use a pw due to exchange enforcement )
+1
Anyone have any luck getting this working?
I've tried the Xposed module and can't seem to get screen off detection working.
I'm on 5.1.1 (LMY48I)...
Im in the same boat as Jazic... any updates here?
no way?
You would think this functionality would be natively inherent...
This should be at least a quasi-option.
Like you should be able to enable NFC while screen is asleep to a white-listed tag, and be able to set it to wake up screen or not, and be able to unlock phone or not.
So long as a white-list is required it's not a security risk.
It would also be cool to be able to set up app specific UI macros to initiate from NFC.
Hi everyone,
so my issue is simple, yet I don't know what to actually do.
After a recent update via Google Play of some applications (i think that's the main problem), my draw pattern (a correct one) is not recognized by the phone anymore. Whatever I do, my Lock Screen doesn't recognize my correct pattern and lock itself from 10 seconds to 5 minutes depending on how many times I've tried to open it. Even my fingerprint is not recognized (altough as far as I remember, it never is when my phone boots for the 1st time, as pattern must be validated first).
My phone becomes unusable, as it can't unlock. The only 2 options I have are "Emergency call" or "Forgotten password". The latter option just says I have to Wipe Data Format which is not an option for me, as I have important things on my phone.
What solution could I apply, so I can unlock my phone WITHOUT having to delete my data :/
Important to note:
- It's not a problem from screen protector (I've removed it..)
- Generally I was using the option for invisible draw pattern, thus no one sees what I draw as extra protection (maybe it could be part of the problem now after some updates of random apps).. but obviously is working
- My SIM code is still accepted and it's fine, so not everything was Reset for whatever reason, as it's not 0000..
- My phone is updated to the absolute latest version available via OTA and nothing else was added or done
- I didn't use 3rd party Lock Screen other than the one included with the Xiaomi 11T Pro from the system
- I was using Bitdefender (which was not updated when the problem occured), which has the option to randomize pin for applications only (not pattern)
- I've also made the battery drop and the phone to turn-off and left it like that for 2 days to see if it will somehow reset/remember my pattern, but nothing..
I read so many guides online from Google and all seem are promoting some sketchy software which I dont want to risk with unless it's 100%.
Model: Xiaomi 11T Pro 5G 256GB 8GB RAM with Miui 14 (European version)
Thank you Xiaomi friends!
Weird that updates on the playstore have created this problem.
Not much to do, security issue.

Well, I see no other reason for this to happen. Doubt someone hacked me, altough at that time I was using Public wifi in a hotel. It can't be Bitdefender as well I think to scramble my pattern and I've remotely removed it. I've read that maybe if in my pocket the wrong pattern was entered by accident many times, that it will reset, but it makes no sense to me. I'm using latest versions of MIUI and standard apps (not using any unknown ones), everything is from Play Store, as I really can't imagine what issue could be, but for sure I would like to enter without deleting my data :/
Never seen or had this problem and it may be Bitdefender that caused this problem.
No solution without deleting your data.

I was thinking the same, but remembered that LockScreen for Bitdefender was disabled way before that. It was not working for the official Xiaomi LockScreen to scramble anything (especially pattern) as I choose which apps to lock and it was not working on it. It does it only for applications which I've selected and with pin numbers :/ Also I've remotely removed the app support via their Center which means that even if that was the problem (for some unknown reason turned ON lets say), it should not be valid now. Also it was not updated via the last moment I had it working , so for sure it's not this the problem unless someone hacked Bitdefender via my profile, which should be valid also for my 2nd Xiaomi phone, but there I have no problem and it seems very unrealistic scenario for me :/ Also if it was true, they can't change my pattern or pin via website. Problem is somewhere else, as I remember, most were some Google and Xiaomi apps that got updated which I even usually don't use like Auto. I really look for some way to unlock it or somehow make my phone "remember" the correct invisible pattern :/ of course to delete everything would be most easy but that should be last last resort for me :/
Try here to see if the password or account is still the same and works.

I didn't register Xiaomi Account when I took my phone, neither it has such, I don't have Xiaomi Cloud or account, I just have Google account in order to use Google Play :/
Is your bootloader unlocked? If yes, try boot a twrp a12/a13 for 11t pro, see if you can retrieve your data using that.
If you're not unlocked, wipe/format data is your only option. Either from recovery or your google account

As far as I know it's not unlocked/rooted or anything as it's brand new phone I bought in November. So in such case, whatever I do or read from sketchy apps/websites/videos, I should not trust and it's 100% impossible to unlock it or recover my data in any way? In general I can open the notification to turn Wifi on/off, etc, but I can't view messages for example, so just very basic things

Interest to have a Xiaomi account:
Ability to locate the phone and erase data in case of theft or loss.
Cloud Backup:
Sms, Calls, Mms, apps, password, bluetooth, etc..

I am privacy concerned about Xiaomi in general, so that's why I try to minimize services used by it. I have the ability to locate and erase data with BitDefender and Google as well, but that's not an issue at the moment. I can do it, but won't do me any favor. Also Xiaomi Cloud is the last place probably someone would want his private information stored from the hundreds available free alternatives, also is limited to just 2 GB as far as I remember by before, which indeed is useful for SMS, but nothing else. I dont see a reason to use it , neither why would my phone do unnatural things. I worry that this issue will repeat, so yes, backup is always worth to have, but I couldn't imagine I will need it so soon and that it will be for such unlogical reason which none of us seem to know what's the problem which really frustrates me and makes me rethink in general the use of Xiaomi, as such random events happening should be a red flag

Hey, also on 11T Pro? And after update?? Do you remember last things that happened before it "forgot" the pattern? And was it also the invisible type of it? Tell more details, maybe we can get some common points and maybe some solution could be found hopefully :/
Yes on Xiaomi 11T Pro, received miui 14 a week ago. It just randomly happened yesterday as my fingerprint is not detected it asked me to draw the pattern. When I drew it doesn't allow me into phone even though the pattern is correct. For me the pattern is VISIBLE.
did you activate usb debugging? and at least once connected with your pc?
then you can get your files with XIAOMIADBFASTBOOTTOOLS.jar
that's the only option you have left before deleting everything on your phone.

Indeed, it is necessary to have activated the USB debugging and to have already used this program so that the authorization is granted.
Anyway, nothing about this program will remove security or be able to recover data.

Nope, there is no such option and even if it existed, this data is encrypted.

Guys, do you think it's worth to wait for some "miracle" to happen? It seems it's some bug that happens to other people too and hopefully Xiaomi takes action. Maybe if I can get update in background, might get fixed without the need to Wipe data?
PS: I did use before USB Debugging, but from the Settings. I dont know how to turn it remotely from the computer. I also have installed ADB, but I'm not sure how to debug it as it doesn't detect my phone now :/ The XIAOMIADBFASTBOOTTOOLS.jar I havent used.
