I lost root on my G4 after the first bootloop repair so I'm looking to confirm that I can root a VZW S8 if I purchase now (Feb 2018).
I can purchase the S7 for $480 or the S8 for $552 directly from VZW spread over 24 payments. I definitely won't be changing carrier (I do a lot of support while on my mobile and need the most reliable connection which is vzw). Is there a way to get the phones for less? I used to go to Amazon and save about $100 but it appears that is no longer offered.
Thanks
no root for VZW S8.

You can root as long as you have a bootloader version 2 or below which I think is the highest they have gone yet. You cannot unlock the bootloader and install TWRP, etc. Look in the S8 and S8 plus ROM forums. Partcyborg has a rooted ROM. Also in the S8 plus Verizon forum there is a rooted ROM by JRKruse.

Yes you can root the process is a little weird there is no twrp..due to locked bl and the battery only charges to 80% a eng kernel thing....But dont be discouraged the dev for root on snapdragon is a Verizon customer And the newest release is awesome you will get better batt life at 80% than stock to 100

Why would it be so much better with just a custom ROM? Are there custom kernels as well?
The 80% limitation is because root has to be used with engineering kernel? Just wanted to get it all straight in my head. My S8 arrives next week.
Yes. It's the eng Kern. Lol that's our custom kernel. The pc rom. Is the only one but with many tweaks to make batt better

Ok, so the only 2 kernels for Verizon S8 are the stock and the engineering stock. I was curious if anyone was able to actually tweak the kernel itself.
Seems like it'd be hard to tweak battery life very much without access to the kernel source. Oh, well! Looking forward to getting my S8... they were so cheap at Samsung last week I couldn't resist.

at 80% charge i average 5.5 to 7 hours sot normally
yea cant tweak the kernel at all....on the PC rom I am ever so slightly responsible for even better batt life I went through nearly every inch of this rom and boot:good:
The newest version of the rom actually uses to combo firmware boot img and not the reg eng kernel so technically there are 3 kernels Rooted basically we have system access....
But it is deodexed and zipaligned...With a load of other tweaks.....
And with every version released it gets better
The biggest thing rooting is you will get errors....
Ignore most of them through the prosses you will see uploadmode errors and unauthorized software detected but ignore them and dont freak out most of them are part of it:good::good::good:
also you need usb 2.0 ports and remember comsy odin is for PC rom firmware only
And reg odin=reg stock firmware

Sounds good... thanks for all the info. Since my phone is factory new, I'll test out pure stock for a while and see if it's good enough.
I rooted my s8 Verizon using PartCyborg rom. Took me 2 tries but it's amazing and worth it

So it's basically a stock/rooted/debloated rom then? It has that "80%" battery bug, but that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things? Any other bugs or weirdness?
Nope that's basically it. 80% lasts me about 5 hours heavy usage. I personally don't care if it charges to 80 because of the things you can do with root.

Xiaomi phone is root ready
Download and flash latest Developer ROM: bigota.d.miui.com/4.4.18/miui_MI3W_4.4.18_793942d69a_4.3.zip and after restart, goto Security->Permission->Enable Root permisson.
Xiaomi is one of a few phones that is using rooted UI while you are still enjoying warranty with it.
Oppo, OnePlusOne which is using CyanogenMod is also comes with root out of the box.
Others brand you might need to take risk to root and void your warranty as happened to my HTC One X. (USB port can't detect at all even using fastboot, so need to stay at MIUI v5)
So now bought Xiaomi Mi3 instead of spending extra money on branded mobile phone.

i actually installed the dev rom but its laggy and has many bugs. Google plus cannot be installed for some reasons. Im using the mi 3 wcdma singapore version. i wonder if i can root with singapore rom?
Rooting steps for Xiaomi MI3
Directions
Usually, Xiaomi are already rooted from the top, so the process would be to activate it.
1. Click Security Center, on the desktop of your smartphone.
2. In Security Center, click the Permissions icon.
3. Enables administrator rights selecting first ROOT and then where it says Enable administrator permissions.
4. Download any application requiring root activation and accept that ROOT permissions, so you can check it out.

Normally buying a Nexus device is a no brainer to me as I love stock Android, but in the case of the Nexus 5 I've been so turned off by all the problems I read about in regards to build quality that I just can't bring myself to buy one. I also can't get past how boring it looks design-wise, the Nexus 4 was absolutely gorgeous and was a must have the moment I saw it, the Nexus 5 was a complete meh.
As far as the MI3 goes, I got one myself two weeks ago for a price I couldn't refuse to play around with. The specs may be the same as the Nexus 5, but I think the quality of the MI3 is higher. It has a better saturated screen that is on par with the HTC One M7 (my previous phone, which I still have), which many regarded as the best screen of 2013, whereas it's widely said the Nexus 5 has a very bland, washed out screen. I think it's safe to say the MI3 has a better camera as well. Lastly the MI3 has a very sexy, minimalist design. It's a phone that makes just want to pick it up and hold it now and then.
With that said, you really have to love MIUI, because that's all you'll likely ever get with the MI3. There are no aftermarket ROMs for it at ALL. And stock MIUI is most definitely not the most stable ROM around, even in its supposedly Stable ROM form. The Developer's ROMs are horribly buggy. I do find MIUI is part of the fun though of owning the MI3, there's lots of themes to play around with that truly changes the entire phone's UI looks, not just at the launcher level. It's also the easiest phone to root that I've ever encountered, the stock recovery is quite user friendly, and makes it easy to replace itself with CWM without doing bootloader unlocks and whatnot. In the Developer's ROM, rooting is literally just flipping a built in switch.

if not for the price i wouldn't have thought of Mi3. the fact you're stuck with that UI and no developers behind that can banish it out, no thanks. i would like Nexus5 any day over it. but i do appreciate your post to highlight Mi3. people really queue up and grab that phone here.

Is it possible to gain Root without installing the buggy Developer's ROM? The Root Permission option is disable on my stock ROM Mi3.
Hi all,
I recently ordered SM-N920C on ebay. I have not received it yet, expect to get it sometimes next week. I am going to use it on AT&T network, and checking several threads here, some mentioned that it works on AT&T.
I have no idea what stock installed firmware come with it (since I don't have the device with me), however per ebay seller listed as SM-N920CZKAXFA, so not sure, it seems like south africa.
ok now here are my questions:
1. Does it makes big differences what firmware it is on if you live in USA (like Google play, Google acting crazy since you are in USA..etc)
2. I heard that there could be issue with getting 4G/LTE performance issue, etc. Do you experience it any differences? or any other issues you experienced while using it on AT&T?
3. I am planing to root it, I know there are couple of custom kernels out there for it, would you recommend stock kernel or custom kernel? I like to keep phone pretty much stock based since this phone will be my daily drive.
4. If you recommend custom stock base ROM, what would be?
5. I hope Samsung brings back "Note" brand! (no this is not question )
appreciated in advance if you give some feedbacks above concerns and questions!
thanks,
J.

thanks for this info, made me feel a bit better knowing it will work on AT&T. As far as rooting goes, based on my research on threads, most recommends custom kernel(s) for easy rooting, but seems like using custom kernel may introduce some other issues (based on bugs they listed).

Every device i own is rooted except my att note 5. You can root with cf auto root from odin with stock kernel but will trip knox 0x1 its no big deal with me being in the states using a international device no warrenty anyhow.. https://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ This is the cf auto root just look for the file N920C But this one is for mm firmware. Ive already flashed most of the roms on the 920c thread and all behave pretty good. But with kernels i mostly use stock kernel or skyhigh kernel. Your just have to play around a bit and see what works best for your liking....

same here....I always rooted all my devices (except my Nexus 6P), and I really don't give darn about warranty, and top of this Note 5 (bought from ebay, still did not receive it yet) has no warranty anyway.
so simple download CF-Auto-Root file for 920C and flash it with Odin..done....looks like CF-Auto-Root-noblelte-nobleltejv-smn920c.zip there now says 6.0.1 (MMB29K.N920CXXU2BPB9), so seems like it is up to date.
by the way, someone told me stock kernel gives better battery life than custom kernels......ohh well, like you said, play around and see what works....but I have feeling I will stick with stock kernel (rooted with CF-Auto Root).

Your on the right path then after rooting with cf autoroot with odin first then flash twrp in odin 3.0.2.0 img.tar file https://dl.twrp.me/noblelte/ after you got that set up make a fresh backup of that stock rom so you always have it. Battery life depends on the user and the number of apps each user uses if one gets 5 hrs sot that doesnt mean the other users will..

One question: when I checked About Device, right under Software Info tab, it says United Arab Emirates, probably the firmware it is on I guess...
well, i guess my first two step will be root it and then install TWRP, then think about trying some stable N7 port ROMs that can be my daily drive without bunch of bugs...

I haven't flashed anything in over a year because I've been using a Verizon S5 which has little available for it. I'm wanting to buy a new Verizon Nexus 6 from eBay and have a couple questions -
Is the phone easily unlocked and rooted?
Can I flash any of the ROMs in the development section? http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development
I just want to be sure I'm not buying another useless phone as my S5 is.

1. Yes. The "gotcha" now here appears to be SafetyNet is tripped with an unlocked bootloader (means if you use something like Android Pay, it won't work).
2. Yes. Obviously you cannot flash a 6.0 kernel on a 7.0 ROM and vice versa.
I myself own a Verizon Nexus 6 and it's easily been my favorite phone. It is easily unlocked and easy to root. I've flashed plenty of ROMs since I've had it. I've flashed Dirty Unicorns, Pure Nexus, Chroma, and a few others. Obviously, just do your research before flashing a ROM. As long as you know your way around, you'll not have any issues.
Thanks guys, I'm glad its all easily possible. I used to crack flash like crazy back when I had my Fascinate, Galaxy Nexus, and S4 with the unlocked mdk bootloader, but not with this locked down S5.
I don't use android pay and would be happy with a rock solid LP or MM ROM. Id like to try OctOs also, its been one of my favorites.

Thanks I've been out of the game for so long I feel like I know nothing, it will take some getting used to.
You will love the Nexus 6 after being locked down on that other phone. I have 2 one straight from Moto the other straight from google.
Easy to unlock boot loader - command line simple
Easy to Root
Power to do anything with this phone.
I love them and with all the xposed tweaks, Roms, and apps that can make the N6 do somuch more.
Been awhile sine I last checked in with my S8... back in the time, only way for root was with the eng build that kept you only at 80% battery life.
Thought I would check in to see if there were any new mods or anything that would be worth while on a stock tmo s8 if anyone could fill me in?
Starting to really feel like I made a mistake getting an S8 lol... My s6 still is prettier.
I've been looking, still a noob. Unless you never updated to v5 bootloader, it seems the only way for true root is to install the newest safestrap hack, then flash a pre-rooted Android 7 rom, 80% battery. No root for pie or oreo exists.
So far, with the v5 bootloader, we can only install safestrap, then flash one of the few roms available, tune using xposed or something similar. There is no one stop, twrp-then-check-out-all-these-cool-new-roms place to go.
I really appreciate what has been done here, because Samsung made it so much harder to mod these phones. However, compared to the good old S5/S6 days, it kinda sux. There's no complete noobs guide, tougher to get started.
So I got an s10 today. I used one back in May of last year and was very disappointed with battery life on stock.
So where do I start with custom Roms and kernels if I want better battery life?
Also is any of that possible and still have Samsung pay work without tripping any counters?

You should not root it dude.... Neither install TWRP or a custom ROM / kernel. In 2020, there is pretty much 0 avantage to root a Samsung phone I think. You'll just break some features like Samsung Pass/Pay, OTA updates and some other cool things.
Sometime, battery life is worse on custom firmwares

Ads blocking, custom kernel with under/overclocking, custom themes, root app like Afwall, adaway, button mapper, nav bar customization, magisk modules...
There are plenty of reasons to root.
To answer to the op, I think you should give a try to ambassadii ROM with Nemesis kernel. Great battery life and performance overall.
However, I don't think that you can keep using Samsung pay with root.
But friend advice, you should avoid mixing your phone and your bank details, regarding privacy ?

I don't use it anyway. I'm just worried that once I flash it back to stock and sell it to the next person, he or she might not be able to use samsung pay.
