Updating is easy and if Sony PC Companion is malfunctioning, you could use Flashtool ( get it here )
After that you can download the latest firmware ( ftf format ) here
There are some guides on how to flash the latest firmware, and don't worry flashing won't void your warranty or root your device.
This is the best and the most informative click me
Good luck
Hi
If I do that, will ota updates work in future?
Don't have time to fiddle around too much now and again every time there's an update,
Any ideas how to get it to pick up the ota update, which I'm sure has already been released for its region?
There's a thread around here with a tool to download the official full firmware files per region and flash them to your phone.
As long as you use a region that's compatible (with radios and all) the effect should be a perfectly fresh installed stock phone that will pick up OTA's just like any other official firmware.
sony flashtool or something? I can't remember.
Hi,
The firmware thats on the phone is global region,
23.0.A.2.93 - Unbranded - GLOBAL (1286-9917) #1
But i dont see lollipop updates for it.
Which region firmware should i use to flash?? Which would work 100%
Pls help with some advise asap which will work
I've gone through the process of entering my IMEI and serial number in the EMUI bootlocker website and its given me a code.
I haven't yet done any further steps including the adb commands required to remove the blootlock.
However I can now see on the MT Huawei Firmware update list that there is a new update (128) and I'm on (120b)
I've tried using the VPN option to force the update to obtain the firmware from its own servers to no avail.
The firmware checker simply states the firmware isn't compatible with device.
..has somehow simply registering caused it to be blocked for future updates?
##Secondly##.. Does continuing the process and using abd unblock commands cause it to no longer work with OTA?
Or is it only when and if you root it - that OTA can not work? (or does it work)
Quite confused and would really appreciate any advice as ideally I would like to keep OTA, but have root at sometimes with the hope that I could disable root anytime a OTA updates comes available and then re-enable after.
Any advice greatly appreciated )

It is NOT related with unlocked bootloader or rooted firmware.
It's related with emui 8.1 version whitch is NOT supported by FirmwareFinder.
So basically VPN or Proxy wont work with that.
Another thing: the firmwares listed on FF aren't approved at appearance date. This means that we must wait a bit for approval, and after that can FF download the selected firmware (again, emui 8.1 is not supported).
If you are in hurry with flashing the new firmwares, you can via TWRP (methods described on forum).
BUT be aware, that even with that you can brick your phone
(trust me: after 2 days, when i brought my phone, it was hardbricked... i haven't other choice but RMA, and obviously they have changed the phone. SO be very careful.)

Have you used this before? On the P20 Pro?
Only reason i ask is the P20 Pro is not listed on the supported devices and as i said you would need to have the correct firmware for your device, the newer firmwares are made for the European version of the device L29 not L09, so providing you're on L29 and it's the correct firmware then it should work, but i would not like to be the person to crash test this.
I'm on the L09 which doesn't take L29 firmwares unless i debrand and then try it.
I have CLT-L29C432B128. (I have updated with hurupdater since the 128 fw is not yet approved from firmware finder)
I thinking on try flashing cn firmware.

Thanks for the advice!
So the list if updates that firmware finder shows are upcoming updates - rather than being released for offical OTA distrubtion from the date listed?
If firmware finder gets it first I'm wondering if you know generally when the OTA updates start to be pushed out via the OTA update system?
I don't know.
Generally about 2-3 weeks (maybe less).
Hi guys. I bought an unlocked Sprint LG V40 (V405UA). I am from Argentina and it works perfect in my country with my SIM card, but the problem is that it has the Sprint firmware and it is in Android 8.1 and it won't update if i am not with Sprint contract i think. I'd like to have the stock global firmware and get OTA updates (Android pie at least). I see a page called "lg-firmwares.com" with all models firmwares and tutorials, but i am noob in this matter and i don't want to "brick" my phone or lose the unlocked condition. If i follow the "lg-firmwares.com" tutorial and flash the Android pie firmware for my model, can i brick my phone or lock it again? or it is secure and everythink will be ok?
Thanks.

Okay you have 3 ways to do this.
1st. If rooted/Unlocked Bootloader: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v40/how-to/guide-crossflash-unlocked-pie-to-t3944359
2nd If rooted/Unlocked Bootloader: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v40/how-to/guide-make-lg-v40-compatible-lgup-t3953120
3rd I personally haven't tried this yet: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v40/development/lg-1-16-t3967559
With the 3rd one you should just simply be able to flash any KDZ but you should make sure it's compatible first.
But once you Crossflash no more OTA's you would have to download NEW KDZ and flash it over the one your on.

https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v40/how-to/guide-lgup-root-t3967858 This Guide i made should help you with your 3rd question. That we have seen no you shouldn't loose Sim unlock if it's factory unlocked or if you carrier unlocked it for you after so many months being active with them. You always loose your data when KDZ flashing. You wont get OTA updates if you Crossflash...if you stay with your current rom OTA's should be possible
If you're using a us carrier phone outside of the us, you should just forget about ota. It won't work. Do yourself a favor and learn about the various flash methods. You're gonna need one of them at least to keep it updated.
Thanks guys. It sucks that it's imposible for me to get OTA updates, but at least i can try flashing my phone to keep it updated. I will check the guide and learn more about it then. Anyways i think this is an amazing phone and a bargain for the price nowadays..

Hi i am new here and need help with updating my Samsung note 9 i still have a baseband N960USQS1ARI5 but will like to update to the latest firmware. i'm using an unlocked AT&T phone. can anyone guide me? I'm not sure if updating the firmware will lock the phone and the process to update, do I just update the firmware in stages as the updates were released till i get to the latest update or can i update straight up to the latest? I am thinking of using Odin, is that a safe way to do this? any help will be appreciated. Lastly, can I change from the AT&T firmware to lets say a none carrier based firmware so as to stop seeing the AT&T logo on boot up? Maybe switch to a firmware that supports global or international? Does anyone have links to an unlocked firmware update i can use, as well? Please help!
I must state that the phone never updates automatically as it always says the software is up to date.

to your last point, at&t phones are notoriously bad at updating
factory unlocked phones will remain forever unlocked and phones unlocked that are bespoke to a specific carrier will also remain unlocked even with Odin flashes providing that the method employed to unlock it was legitimate. Some unlock methods employ root and only trick the phone into thinking its unlocked. Well, once you remove root, and thusly the trick, the unlock is gone. I have ran across rare examples where the person swore up and down that they unlocked their phone with a legit unlock code and that it relocked to a carrier once the sim was inserted and initial programming completed, but i dunno. Sounds weird to me, but every person who said this also said that the phone locked to a carrier other than the one it came from originally. Take that for what its worth, but i still mostly stand by the first couple lines of this section of my diatribe
If you want the at&t crap gone, get the N960U1 firmware and flash it in Odin. You will need the modified version of Odin to flash it so it can ignore the 255 errors the phone throws up from flashing firmware for a carrier (or, in this case, no carrier) on to a phone that it wasnt originally designated (not designed) for
go to sammobile.com/firmwares, get the info for the firmware you want to d/l, get the Frija tool or Samfirm and download the firmware thru one of those as theyre literally 5x faster and flash it

Hello everyone i've been really struggling with updating my phone that i got pre-owned It's a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (SM-N960U) and I have not recieved updates since I got it the phone is still on Android version 8.1.0 and security patch from 2018 so i've been really wanting to update it to the latest version but I couldn't and i figured out that phones from AT&T only update via their own app or OTA thing anyway I thought of flashing it with a stock firmware VIA ODIN but i checked on sammobile that the note 9 AT&T csc only has 1 update and thats 8.1.0 also so i was wondering if i can use some other firmware to flash it or do i change csc? would that work if i changed the csc or am i gonna have baseband and signal issues? I tried KIES it said it didnt recognize my phone probably because the software version has never been updated and very old , i wanted to flash it to a different CSC than AT&T but i dont think thats a good idea, please help

Kies is for older Samsung devices, Smart Switch is for newer Samsung devices.
Here is a list of firmware at Sammobile that has android 10 for your device. They are for T-mobile but I'm pretty sure it can be used on the AT&T Note 9.

Hello people, having exactly the same problem, so its a SM-N960U phone, unlocked from AT&T. First to say, im not in the US, dont have AT&T sim, the phone is updated to android 10 with 2.0ui, with baseband ver. N960USQS3DTB1.
Now somewhere i read that bootloader must be unlocked in order even to begin thinking of flashind the device, dont know how accurate that is... Id like to ask the Owner of the post, if he was able to make it, to update his firmware. And if so did he indeed succeded from the link above from ep1kku ?

No, the bootloader does not need to be unlocked before flashing if you are flashing stock software, unlocked bootloader is required to flash custom software, not stock software. There are some manufacturers that require unlocking bootloader even when flashing stock software but Samsung is not and probably never will be one of them.
You can flash your device with stock firmware any time you want, provided that the firmware is not a firmware that is older than your currently installed firmware and if the firmware is for your model number or an equivalent variant of your device with a similar model number and the same CPU series.

You can boot into download mode and it should say whether the firmware is "official" or "custom".
As I said, you can flash stock firmware provided that the firmware that you are flashing is not older than your current firmware, you can't downgrade the firmware, you can only flash an equivalent firmware to what is already on the device or a newer, updated firmware. Your error may be due to this. For all Samsung firmware, the 5th character from the right in the build number is referred to as the binary version. Your currently installed firmware has a "3" for the binary version, this means you can only flash a firmware that also has a binary 3 or you can flash a firmware that has a number higher than 3 but you can not flash a firmware that has a binary that is lower than 3(you can not flash a binary 1 or 2 firmware).
Depending on the specific error that you got, this could be your issue. What was the specific error that you got?

When using Odin, in the box that shows the flashing process, it should say exactly which error you are getting. When I asked what error you are getting, I was not asking "why" you are getting the error, I'm asking what it says in that box. Post the exact name of the error. Try to flash the device, while it is flashing, watch the dialog box in Odin, when it gives the error, take note of exactly what the error is, you can scroll up and down within the box and read all of the output data in that field.
Yes, it could be due to being from a different region but I doubt it. It could also be because your device is a Snapdragon version but the firmware that you are trying to flash could be for a Exynos version instead, or vice versa.

You still aren't telling me the SPECIFIC error that you are getting in the dialog box in Odin. That has been the most important question to understand your issue but you keep dodging it. Flash the firmware, watch for the error, take note of exactly what error it says it is, then post exactly what it says the error is. If you can't post that then there is no point in replying.
If you are trying to flash the device in a different region, you may not need to flash the whole firmware from the different region, you may be able to flash just the modem.img from the alternative firmware. To do this, extract the firmware, find the modem.img then convert that modem.img into an Odin flashable .tar using 7zip with its highest level of compression, then flash the modem.img.tar via Odin.

You still aren't telling me the SPECIFIC error that you are getting in the dialog box in Odin. That has been the most important question to understand your issue but you keep dodging it. Flash the firmware, watch for the error, take note of exactly what error it says it is, then post exactly what it says the error is.

I added to my previous post.
Strange, your screenshot doesn't show an error, it just stops without giving an error.
I'm assuming that your firmware came in multiple parts with some CSC files? If so, try flashing without using the CSC files.

Give me a link to the firmware that you downloaded and I'll compare to see if it is supposed to work.

Alright, https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-note9/firmware/#SM-N960U this is without the carrier, if you put at&t in search menu, you will see that only 1 is available, with android 8.1
So i tried U1, version at&t https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-note9/firmware/SM-N960U1/ATT/#SM-N960U1 also didn't work, i tried T-mobile on same U1 model, also didn't work. Everytime same error/none error like on the screen shot
