Any one still using DROID TURBO in 2018 and will ? - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

i just bought one from ebay i had droid turbo 2 but i feel like OG droid is better , so are you going to still use your droid in 2018 and why ?

yeah
i do

Still rockin mine. Over 3 years old now. Getting close to upgrading though. Already replaced the battery but its just not cutting it anymore. its still in great shape and i love that is heavy vs the others. Just the Pixel XL seems a bit too big and even though the Pixel size is the same the screen is smaller. Also been looking at the new Moto Phones but I need Root though.

I went Pixel 2 XL from the Turbo and it's really not that much bigger. It's only 1.4 cm taller.

I had to sell my U11 because of Verizon issues and went back to the turbo. Aside some lag spikes it's working well tuning the crDroid rom.

Using lineage os on mine

Yes. But why not? The Droid Turbo runs apps and games just fine. Play any game available on the playstore without problems. In some cases it runs better than most current cell phones, like Moto Z play, or any other device with a 625 snapdragon for example. I recharge my cell phone once a day. And thanks to the fact that the Android is an open source, we are running current versions of the system (soon we will have the 8.1 for the Droid turbo) So while it works, I will continue with it.

Still using mine , although gave it a rest for last 2 month because I'm using work phone ( A5 2017). Only reason It's resting is to keep it in as best condition as possible, I love this phone and plan to keep it for much much longer. Although it's technically MOTO MAXX. . Hoping there will be Oreo port.. If there is enough interest from other developers I am willing to participate with my lower mid knowledge.
this phone is for me better than most of new phones, and I have a feeling they won't make anything similar in near future..
Was thinking about droid turbo 2 ( moto X force actually) ,to have along with MOTO MAXX but they are still way pricey and custom support seems to be non existent.. So pass for now..

Still have mine and works great for my needs. Battery seems to be doing good still. I ran mine down to 7% the other day without issues. Using RRemix for the last few months. Won't replace unless it dies of natural causes. May have to get a new battery for before I can't find any.

Still using mine as a daily driver. Waiting on a replacement battery to arrive today which will be welcome (60% shutdown is annoying) but after three years that's sort of expected.
If I could track down a clean 64GB model I would probably grab it. Wireless charging, OLED and fairly durable construction for astronomy use outdoors make the quark a great phone for me.

My fell directly on screen on concrete and other so many times that I don't even count anymore.. Just a hairline very small crack at the edge of screen, can't even see it. Did destroy original red cover though , and current black ballistic nylon is a bit banged up.. Cheap and easy to replace though.. I'm never using a bumper case on it.. Only screen protect..
I will think about treating it with new screen, said to myself I will buy it when it cracks , but this thing doesn't want to break lol.. It has some burn in at top from status bar and middle though , that was there since I bought it (used) ..
Battery was pretty ok but I bought new original one when I bought the phone.. I do have to say that battery on my A5 2017 is same in worst case scenario and mostly better, and it's 900mAh smaller.. But power of those phones is not comparable too..

I am still using my Droid Turbo in 2018 as my spare carry typically. (in backpack) However, ZTE is fixing my Axon 7 at the moment, and my MXPE has a smashed screen and i have to wait until Monday for the OEM used screen i was lucky enough to find on the 'bay. So I am using the Turbo on Tmobile.
Band 4 is fast enough when i have it, but it's seriously a step backwards anywhere but my home as i live in a predominately band 12 area. I was so glad to be off of Verizon, until now. The Turbo is still a great device, even when i dont have signal in entire cities during the course of work. (i deliver medical equipment these days, mostly rural areas here in Upstate SC.)
All of that being said, all of the initial comparisons to the Nexus 6 and the similarities, especially apq8084 if ya know a bit about SOC's/etc, along with re-reading posts by some of the people in the Turbo forums that I have come to know over the last 3 years, has lead me to be convinced again that the Turbo can do whatever Shamu (N6) does. That being said, I just booted into Linux with the intention (i may not succeed) of modding the su49 radio image with the latest n6 image. Will it work? The popular answer is 'Probably Not'. However, I have an extra Turbo board, an incentive to make it work, and a day to wait on my MXPE screen with crappy coverage on Tmob. Ultimately,
Turbo has been the best android I have owned aside from the axon 7. That bar was high. No wireless charging is literally the only detraction I think most of us can come up with. Honestly, though, I don't miss the trickle charge speed of wireless. and the axon 7 daughter board and charging port are easily changable and accessible, so really, it's a moot point.
Turbo is still fast enough running the newest Res Remix and @bhb27 kernel. I hope all of you know how much that dude has done for all Quark owners. and @beaups if you're on an xt1254 running a custom OS.
Turbo still has a decent screen and rock solid build quality. Not the fastest vs newer phones, but if I had held on to upgrade, it still would hang in most scenarios and still be a great device 3 years later.
UPDATE: Although I believed it to be a simple task, I did not manage to have any success in modding the shamu flashable radio zips to yield band 12. i figured i could open the zip in Winrar, swap the mdm1m9kefs.1 .2 and .3 files, but the turbo radios i have in fastboot format dont quite jive. i tried to mod my build.prop so the phone would read as 'shamu' from ro.get.prop, but that also did not work. the shamu radio files that did not have device checks written in still bootlooped after flashing and did not change permanently the device name or radios. im sure there are people that know way more about why that is totally not possible, but i had an evening to waste for the greater good. i know there are a few moto radio people around these parts that could tell me why its impossible, or how to go about utilizing the apq8084 aspect since radio does not have any checks in TZ, but still the only out i have is to assemble one of my old win 7 or xp machines and plunk away in RSDlite. probably would change nothing. but if anyone knows of the top of their head, id love to have the knowledge.

I had long thought it would be possible for the XT1254 to at least add the LTE bands/HSPA bands the XT1225 has (LTE bands 5, 17 being the extra LTE bands the XT1254 doesn't have). That would help on AT&T, if not T-mobile. AT&T now calls their band 17 to be "band 12" in all new phone specs... But in reality they still use the band 17 portion of LTE band 12. Band 17 is a subset of LTE band 12, and their AT&T NEW phones have full band 12 compatibility for roaming purposes -- but AT&T network itself still uses only band 17 portion.
But no one was able to do that. I'm not a dev, but I messed with QSPT, QXDM and other programs to try to enable extra bands.

I'm still running a pair of them. Many thanks to @bhb27 for keeping them alive with bug fixes and security updates. Like Chazzmat, I eagerly anticipated the LG v30+. Unlike him, I was unwilling to buy without a confirmed bootloader unlock. LG is letting everyone down in that arena and it looks like it may be their new policy. I'm in no hurry to buy since the Turbos continue to perform. Nothing out there ticks the boxes and offers cdma yet.

update : my droid just arrived and battery life is very good , i got around 5-6 hours of SOT and the screen look very good it's my first phone with quad hd amoled display , as for performance it's very fast , this phone really better than any mid ranger now days and perhaps high end .

Claro que si
Claro que si es un exelente telefono funciona perfecto para todo uso aunque ya estamos esperando un moto verde pomelo xt1799-2 de china a mexico esta a un exelente precio checaremos y comentaremos saludos

Quark was very high end, the BEST phone at end of 2014. Snapdragon 805, 3GB RAM, 1440p AMOLED, 3900 mAh battery, Qi wireless charging, 21MP camera. Lack of rear camera OIS and front facing stereo speakers (both of which Moto/Google put on the Moto Nexus 6) were the only things keeping it from perfection. It was the "reasonable" size version of the Moto Nexus 6, with most of the same specs -- yet had a BIGGER battery than the larger Nexus 6.
In 2015, I won a free LG G4, but sold it to buy my 3rd Quark (Moto XT1225 with 64GB internal storage). Quark with 3GB RAM really kept pace with other phones in 2015 and even 2016.
Only with the 2017 "next gen" Snapdragon 835 phones (LG V30, Samsung Note 8, even Galaxy S8/S8+) do you see phones that are "better" (4GB RAM) while still having features like Qi wireless charging and headset jack -- and OLED displays. And these newer phones have rear camera OIS, which Motorola left off for some reason.

Luckily I also bought the LG V30 US998 (64GB) model, which does have bootloader unlock. That phone has TWRP and is rooted.
But my V30+, which I like better (128GB storage and BLACK) still does not have bootloader unlock. I'm going to wait a little longer. Maybe the V30S model which LG is in the midst of releasing has messed up things. Apparently the V30S will replace the other V30/V30+ models?

Well I, after over 3 years, jumped off the Turbo Train. For those looking for a good Moto Phone that you can still have a unlocked bootloader I would highly recommend the Moto G5S Plus.
I was skeptical about it at first, and it is now only Day 3 but so far I am loving it. Yes it is bigger than the turbo (about the same size as the Pixel XL which my wife has) and feels a lot more slippery but about to order a case. The camera is, in my opinion, just as good as the turbo (But i take pictures for work not so much of anything else lol). The Qualcomm 625 is very snappy and man the 4GB of ram? After rooting and turning off a TON of stuff on startup my phone hovers around 50-60% used VS 80-90% Used. My Turbo just hasn't seem to be like it use to be. Even after a clean flash it just was slow and sluggish still (might be some kind of hardware issue though as some people are perfectly happy still). I both cases I am on stock rom for VoLTE. it works decent on Verizion and haven't had any call drops, bad quality, or slow internet. The reception does seem to be 1 bar low that the Turbo though but I can't see any difference besides that.
Screen looks great, I can't see any difference. Only thing is I hate how the power button is below the volume now. The Finger scanner is nice. I didn't think I'd want one but after having one i like it. I use a Pin/Finger combo for boot at least and screen can be turned off with finger scanner as well which is nice. The normal moto stuff like chop and twist are there. It doesn't have the 4 IR Sensors like the Turbo so you cant just wave and see the time/notifications, but if you pick it up the screen does turn on which I only need it for checking time in which i usually picked it up when laying in bed anyways so I'm good there.
The speaker is louder but lacks the bass that the turbo has. I do miss the hardware keys but I had the Razr Maxx HD so i'm use to it.
Battery life so far is to be determined. I just got finished setting it all up last night and turning off a lot of startup items and what not. In a almost 6 hours period, but almost no use, has only gone down 15%. My turbo would be more than halfway gone by now (yes i replaced battery but this one lasted less in a year than the OEM battery after 2). The Turbo never lasted me more than a day anyways (I'm a heavy user).
Over all i like it and would recommend it to Turbo users looking for a Verizon phone that they can unlock and root. On and did i say that root was Free? XD No Sunshine earned in IMO. The Turbo was a GREAT phone but it just wasn't cutting it for me anymore. I will probably use it to play my games that detect root and what not or to play with/backup for now.

and i meant/needed Radiocomm, not rsd lite. lol. maybe i will assemble a circa 2012 machine just to have it again and plunk around.

I am still using the XT1254. I believe it is still a very advanced model as compared to devices now. It works very well in all aspects except battery. I am in Hong Kong and this model was never publicly sold, so even if I can get a replacement battery I cannot find someone to replace it, and I am not technically capable to do it myself. That's why I have no choice but to start looking for a new device slowly while mine is still working.
There is not any model in mind that get my interest. But my droid's battery is deteriorating and I do not think I am using it as the daily driver by the end of this year.

State of the Union - Moto X?

I posted another thread on here earlier, but Samsung has driven me over the edge. Both my Note 3 and my wife's Note 3 have hardware problems requiring manufacturer replacement. Every Samsung product I buy (including non-mobile) just has problems - I have never had more problems with any other brand. Their support and service is terrible, and if it wasn't for T-Mobile I'd be looking at a 10 day warranty repair through Samsung. So bad quality and bad support just tell me "time to move on."
As mentioned I'm with T-Mobile and my house is in a valley so signal isn't great, but they are mailing me out the signal booster. Otherwise my signal is typically OK. I read up on the Moto X a lot awhile back during initial reviews, but haven't kept up because I went with the Note 3. Beyond obviously losing the stylus and larger screen, is this a fair assessment of what I'll be looking at with the Moto X?
1. No WiFi calling for T-Mobile, but also read a report where the Moto X maintains calls with 8-9db worse signal than other phones.
2. Camera isn't great, but it is much better than initial release.
3. Voice activation is also much more consistent than initial release.
4. Motorola, in warranty situations, mails out a replacement.
5. Great battery life - among the best
6. Less buggy experience as it is closer to stock Android
7. ~$300 in my pocket by the time I sell my replacement Note 3 and buy Moto X with the $70 sale
#6 is interesting to me because what bothers me since switching from Apple is overall quality. In one year with Android I have had hardware problems, endless software bugs, and while I still like Android more than iOS eliminating the headaches with bugs sure sounds appealing right now.
If you're comparing Android to iOS 5 or 6, Android still has more bugs. I have avoided iOS 7 thus far. I gave up on Sammy years ago due to reasons you have stated so can't speak for certain, but am willing to bet there are plenty of bugs in all of Samsung's cruft that won't be present on a Moto x.
Don't count on Motorola shipping you a replacement throughout the warranty period.
The radios in the Moto X are superior to the Nexus 4 and 5. I'm in the mountains and never had reliable service at home and around town with the Nexus phones. No problems with the Moto X; one of the best things about this phone! Another is the quality of the speaker (phone).
My X is on Verizon but yes the signal is excellent. The camera is fine but not as good as Note3. Voice controls work well. Not sure about warranty replacement, doubt it. Considering you are on TMO you can pop your Sim in anything and keep going. Battery life is very good 18+ hours runtime with 3-4 hours of screentime stock unrooted. Nearly stock Android is nice, first android device I have not needed to root and run custom rom (posting this from my rooted hisense sero7 pro tablet). Take the money and run while the Note3 still holds value. MotoX should be worth $150 later this year when you get bored with it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
Side by side, my Moto X was 4-5 db lower than my friend's HTC One. Both phones were on T-Mobile.
Don't worry about the warranty. Except for the occasional app crash, my phone runs flawlessly. Though I haven't had an app crash since 4.4.2, so maybe that's fixed now too.
Cool thanks everyone. I'll go with the Moto X. It sounds like it is the perfect answer to what I need right now.

MOTO X Slapped
Another owner chiming in here. Been through each company (except Sony cause I'm on TMO). Motorola phones (even the Moto X) have always had the best signal in my area. Where other phones would get -100dB and drop me off HSPA, I can get around -90 below otherwise and maintain a steady connection.

I'm with t-mobile and am in the same signal situation as you. My Moto X signal reception is slightly worse than my Sony Advance, and sometimes I am unable to make a call with the Moto X where I was able to with the Sony.
You and I are in a valley. No carrier can reliably supply a consistent signal in my location and it doesn't matter what brand phone I have. I'm curious that when you get the signal booster if you could report your findings with it here on it's performance.
Since the Moto x does not have wi-fi calling I use the "Xfinity Connect App" to make wi-fi calls if I can't make one regularly, which is rare since I can usually find a signal somewhere in my house, but sometimes I can't. You can make and receive calls from your home phone # from any location where you can get a wi-fi connection. For instance, I can make and receive home phone calls at my workplace thru "Connect App". Obviously, you must be a Comcast subscriber to use it.

You know I can't give T-Mobile a total pass here because I had AT&T for nearly 14 months in this same house and never had problems. A friend stayed with us for 3 months when they moved out here with Verizon and they also didn't have a problem. As far as I can tell it is because of the placement of T-Mobile's 1 tower, where if I'm not mistaken AT&T has 2 and Verizon maybe 3? I still like TMobile better. They are cheaper and their customer service reps have been great to work with.
Regardless, I do seem to consistently get 1 bar of 4G upstairs so I think the signal booster should work at home. If you are in the same spot you might want to call T-Mobile because they have started sending signal boosters out for free again. They just run a quick study on your area to see if you qualify, the equipment is sent, but you do have to return it if you ever leave.

I understand. In my case no provider can supply a consistent signal where I live. It's all about the towers, and nobody wants towers in there backyard. My local government won't allow them in the area where I live, so I'm stuck. Thanks for the info, i'll check out the tmobile signal booster as I'm sure I will qualify.
My gsm moto x is pulling down signal where work Samsung Verizon is unusable in a few areas. Damn I miss Motorola and Nokia phones.

My observation is with iOS generally, there may core functionality missing that should really be there. But broadly the OS that is there working pretty well overall.
With Android, there's often a lot of stuff on there that just doesn't work
don't get me wrong, I'm a huge android fan.

Just a quick note... the T-Mobile (Cel-Fi) require a 3G signal to boost. Since 2G is all that is available at my home, it was not an option for me when I had my Nexus 4.
As for cell towers in your back yard... I wouldn't mind having our small town's tower much closer to me (considering it is disguised as a tree).

Got the phone not that anyone really needed an update. I can say with certainty the move from the Note 3 screen to the Moto X is a bit of a shock. Especially since I'm going from pure 5.7" usable screen to 4.375" (4.7" includes the buttons). Of course I knew what I was getting into, but that doesn't mean it still can't shock a bit.
This is a really well thought out phone. When this came out I was totally caught up as a new Android user in the "arms race" of software / hardware functionality going on with all the new phones, and I forgot until now how sometimes just a few features that aren't that glamorous on paper can be so nice. This is why I was partial to Apple for so many years, they always seemed to have things setup in a way that made life a touch easier in moments.
This phone takes that to a new level, and I hope they are able to sustain this direction under Lenovo. The notification system, the touchless controls, and the minimal but purposeful software Motorola added is so great. Some of the simple stuff too is great - a more natural unlock motion and the time that fades in when I pull the phone out of my pocket to see what time it is. I can see why so many of you are passionate about the phone. All this stuff on paper is hard to show off, but get it in your hands for a bit and it's a "wow this is nice" experience.
Anyway I'm pleased - thanks everyone.
I had a GNote3 that I returned for my Moto X. Loved, loved, loved the GNote3 screen but hated, hated, hated Touchwiz and the crap Samsung radios.

The camera is not great in low light and indoor shots and varies with HDR on or off. It is an ISO/white balancing problem that can be improved with software. There are paid camera apps like Camera Awesome and FV-5 that help but they don't open with the wrist gesture, which is a very nice feature.
Colors are not as vibrant even outdoors, but again paid camera apps help with this as does Snapseed post processing.

#6 is interesting to me because what bothers me since switching from Apple is overall quality. In one year with Android I have had hardware problems, endless software bugs, and while I still like Android more than iOS eliminating the headaches with bugs sure sounds appealing right now.

Bugs come with the territory on Android. But in return for tolerating some bugs and finding fixes for them, you get freedom. If minimal bugs is important to you, get an iPhone.
I can't believe the radios on Samsung are still so bad. I would consider the note 3 as a second phone and put CM on it but it would be a pointless endeavor.
MotoX Developer Edition went from German 4.4.2 to Great Britain 4.4.2 to T-Mobile 4.4.2 no problem. Fastboot FTW!

Based on the phones I've owned...and guests phones, my only phone options that I've witnessed working in my house (not having to go outside to make a call) are Motorola and iPhones.
And most the big phone brands and flagships have entered my house. Lol

Yes... ironic that it seems the actual "phone" part of most of today's superphones is an afterthought.

Anything I should know?

Work is supplying me with this phone on Monday, I am relatively sure they will update it before giving it to me. So no root for now.... Even if it isn't I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the current root methods.
Anything I should know about the phone?
Sent from my DROID RAZR M using XDA Free mobile app
It's pretty fast and powerful.
Root situation:
I'm an owner of this phone for about two months now, coming from the Droid Razr Maxx HD and the Droid Razr before that. As someone who has owned those phones and has used, rooted, and ROMed other phones for friends, I can tell you that the root and bootloader unlock situation situation is terrible. The short answer is there will likely never be a rock solid root method (Mofo is lame) and certainly no ROMs coming this way. My previous phones have had amazing ROM support over the years and a reliable root method as well as an amazing bootloader unlock on the HD. Using the Turbo, initially I craved having root but that feeling subsided after some time (stock ROM is somewhat nice on this). When I finally realized I wanted to use Tasker and Titanium Backup to remove the bloatware, I felt high and dry by Verizon and now let's say I'm super pissed at the situation and really want root.
Verizon bloatware and updates:
Originally, I didn't care considering I love Motorola's implementation of Android but it wasn't long until I realized this isn't just a Moto phone, but a Droid one as well. The bloatware is unreal and needs to be disabled ASAP. The Command Center widget that some people have been going nuts over is actually really bad and uses a little fortune of your battery reserves. The Circle widget from the previous Droids is actually way superior; it is more attractive, just as useful, and is smooth unlike Command Center (4FPS animations). Let's just say I wished I had a Moto X 2014 over this strictly because of the Verizon situation on this phone. This doesn't just include bloatware, but updates as well. This was a struggle for me to wait for Lollipop on this thing because I've used Cyanogenmod 12.1 on my Razr Maxx HD. When Lollipop actually came, I was bored of it instantly because I've already used it in the past. When Android M comes out, I'm scared to see the wait for this phone. The Moto X 2014 will probably get it in a week or two and we will be waiting until at least March. Also, it is worth noting that some features are completely absent on this phone like User profiles. Thanks Verizon.
Moto software:
The custom Moto stuff on this phone is another story though. It is the reason to use a Motorola phone. Touchless control is handy, camera and flashlight gestures even handier, and being able to text and drive without looking at the phone is a nice touch. Moto Display is probably the crowned jewel of the software though. As a design critic, the interface is actually kind of ugly, but it is so damn useful and battery friendly. I seldom ever hit the power button. It was the only reason I could deal with Kitkat on this phone, it was the stuff that kept me intrigued coming from my Razr Maxx HD which never got the same Moto love.
Build quality/hardware:
The build of the phone is disappointing, even on the ballistic nylon variant. I doubt there is any metal on the outside of the phone, if so it is just metallic paint over plastic. The ballistic nylon is fun for a week but then you wish you still had a kevlar back. Don't get me wrong, I prefer this ballistic nylon WAY more than plastic and about as much as metal construction, but I have never enjoyed a material like I have kevlar. Kevlar is smooth and provides the perfect grip, as well as surprisingly good protectiveness. I doubt this phone will withstand many drops like my Razr Maxx HD, that phone took multiple screen-first asphalt drops. This was due to it's front edges that extended slightly over the screen. This is ALMOST absent on the Turbo, the screen edges extend only very slightly to protect the screen. Speaking of the screen, the screen is quite good. It is very clear and colorful although not as color accurate as I would have liked. AMOLED burn is present on this phone but only barely. Also, I MISS ONSCREEN BUTTONS SO MUCH. The camera is really excellent at taking pictures of still moments in good lighting. In low light, it is slightly above average and takes pretty grainy shots. The weak point of the camera is the speed of it; not the wait after you take the picture but the speed it can handle. It cannot take a moving picture to save its life. As a final point, the speaker is absolutely terrible. It is front-facing but it is so damn quiet. I digress with MKBHD, "It's not the best front-facing speaker but I'd take it over any rear-facing speaker". I'd take the extremely loud rear-facing speaker on my Razr HD Maxx over this quiet one any day. I've never realized how important speakers are to me on a phone until now. The only redeeming quality is that because it is so quiet, it has decent nuance and hardly ever distorts.
Performance:
I think this is easily the fastest phone I have ever used. It was pretty fast on Kitkat but I'm pretty damn sure it's even faster on Lollipop. This thing is a speed beast and it really shows. I thought nothing could ever be faster than the G2 on Cyanogenmod but this phone proves that notion wrong. It puts every other phone to shame, even the Galaxy S6 and the iPhone 6. Maybe this phone is on par with the S6 in performance or slightly worse, but this phone still came out way earlier. It also scores 54,000 on Antutu in case you were wondering. It was 50,000 on Kitkat.
Battery Life:
This is a mixed bag. It's better than other phones but I've been spoiled by some other phones that I've used. I got anywhere between 2-5 hours of screen-on-time with Kitkat. With Lollipop, I'm getting 4-5 and it's been somewhat consistent. Most people on forums have been posting battery stats of this phone and they have been getting 5-7 consistently. It doesn't help that this phone has terrible standby time. I can go to sleep with 15% left and it will be dead when I wake up. My case may be irregular so take this with a grain of salt. I may perform a factory reset in the future and see how that fares. However, the Turbo charger is truly glorious and charges this phone really fast. It has been a life saver countless time and I'm happy it came in the box. It also supports wireless charging. I've used it a few times but I prefer the faster Turbo charger.
Overall:
I've mentioned the Razr HD Maxx many times, I know I know, but in my experience with the Turbo...it hasn't been that good when compared to my old phone. The reason I don't go back is because of the speed, fantastic camera (in good lighting only), "actual" AMOLED screen that is also much clearer (the older Droid phones don't seem to be true AMOLED), and added Moto features. And also because I gave the old phone to my girlfriend...
Recommendation:
If your work phone is going to also be your daily driver, I might suggest getting a personal phone as well. The Moto X 2014 is really appealing to me. Strangely enough, owning the Turbo has made me crave the Nexus 6 like something fierce, and I have small hands which is strange. The Nexus 6 has better build quality, better software and updates (excluding Moto goodies) , much better speakers, possibly better battery life, and most of all ONSCREEN BUTTONS; it's just a matter of adjusting to size and having a slightly worse camera albeit kind of faster camera. If you actually do enjoy the Turbo with its awesome speed, nice camera, great Moto additions, pretty screen, above average battery life, mediocre build quality, slow updates, lack of root, and lame speakers then I have another recommendation. Install Google Now Launcher and activate it as your default launcher. The latest Google Play Music update added free music stations so I would use that as a music player. Use Google Keyboard (should be default keyboard already) and set the appearance to Material Dark. Activate Hangouts as your default SMS app. Go into settings and configure the Moto software. Deactivate the lock screen (set it to none) because you don't want to unlock your phone twice. Activate developer options and set transition animation scale to .5x. Finally deactivate the Verizon bloatware: Amazon, Amazon app suite, Amazon Kindle, Amazon Music, Appstore, Audible, Caller Name ID, Cloud, Command Center, Droid Zap, Email, Family Base Companion, IMDb, Message+ (actually not a bad app), Mobile Hotspot, Motorola Flip Case, My InfoZone, NFL Mobile, Quickoffice, Slacker Radio, Support & Protection, Verizon Location Agent, and VZ Navigator.
Now I think that is all you possibly need to know about the Droid Turbo.
Thanks, the turbo was my pick, I had very few higher end options. Basically just the turbo, s5 and the note 3. I've been a Samsung fan boy for a while now, but I owned the razrm and enjoyed the experience. Mind you I waited over a year for root. But the happiness of boot loader unlock came with it.
Root seems to be rare in all phones these days. And my next phone may have to be bought out of pocket. But for now this one looked like it deserved a try. From the razrm to this will be an amazing speed increase and from 700 megs to 3000 megsnof ram Motorola has room to grow. My razrm could barely handle kitkat. Could not handle lollipop.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. Although LOLLIPOP does have some glitches that people are a little upset about, this phone is the top of the line by far. My friend has the note 4 and we both ran benchmark tests. My turbo was on kitkat and his on lollipop and still this phone won by about 7,000 . I would definitely recommend this phone to anyone, even with the glitches of lollipop which will hopefully be addressed soon.

Hard to find an upgrade phone!

UPDATE! Unfortunately my note 4 took a fall and landed on a jagged rock (serves me right for holding it in my mouth using the flashlight) - Anyway, I ended up finding a (like new) LG V20 for $300 USD (It's big but I had to make a sacrifice) It was very hard to decide over the mate 9, oneplus 3t and the V20. Because I got it at a reasonably low price it won't be much of a loss at resale if I decide on something else, especially as something is always right around the corner.
UPDATE COMPARISON BETWEEN LG V20 AND NOTE 4
Impressions about the LG V20 after 2 weeks in comparison to the Note 4.
What is better?
Performance is snappier on the V20 (for obvious reasons)
The screen looks more detailed and sharper (even though they both have the same resolution I think the LCD tech is better in this instance IMO)
The device is easier to hold (I really didn't think a small reduction in width could be so noticeable)
The second display is very useful for launching recent apps and using it to launch flashlight while the screen is off is very handy
Battery life is very similar (I average 5 hours of SOT over 24 hour period) - This is a tie but considering people would constantly rant about poor battery life I had to mention it
Although I don't use headphones often you really can tell the difference when using high level cups
The cameras are much better for enthusiasts. You also have a lot of options that are usually only seen in actual cameras (focus peaking, advanced manual modes etc)
What is not?
Loudspeaker and earpiece are deeper but sound less detailed and clear (even after removing the speaker grille from the chin). If you rely heavily on listening to podcasts or anything else where plain vocals are concerned than this will be a bit of an adjustment for you
There are so many different model variants that development is far less than I originally read in to (almost to the point where I am prepared to look for another phone)
I really do miss having physical keys (I am getting used to it, though)
Overall I am not disappointed in the actual device or it's capabilities in comparison to the Note 4. I could definitely forgive the little things I don't like if it had a stronger community. I will see how it goes over the next few months
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm really struggling to replace my note 4. Don't get me wrong, you can get better handsets, but not a big enough leap for me to make the switch. For example I will list the features that I require in a list from most important to least important features.
1. Community/company development
2. Screen size to body ratio (NON CURVED) (Critical. I want a smaller phone but with still at least a 5.5" display)
3. Capacitive/Physical buttons. (Heavily preferred but open minded to change if everything else is perfect)
4. Large removable battery (Open minded to change)
5. Micro SD and IR Blaster (These aren't deal breakers)
Obviously the rest of the phone would need to have higher internal specs etc, else it wouldn't be an upgrade!
The closest i can find is the
Oneplus 3T (But it unfortunately is a similar size with smaller screen)
LG V20 (Quite bigger than Note 4)
Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus (Little bit taller than Note 4 and unsure about future dev)
Mi Mix (Much bigger and poor camera but this type of design really caught my eye)
Without reducing screen size it's really hard to find anything that ticks every box by a large enough margin to make it feel worth it to me. What are your thoughts? Do you have any advice or do you feel the same way?
I'm kind of in the same boat. I think I'm gonna go with the One Plus 3T, I like how the community looks and One Plus also look like a decent company. Another Samsung isn't an option for me as this will be my last.
My Note 4 has developed the lag, freeze and reboot issue that many have reported, so it's either stick with the workaround of the partial wakelock which hammers the battery life or get a new phone (struggling to find replacement mobo's here in the UK). My last 3 phones have been Samsung and all were bought used but this is the first that's developed a major problem.
So I'm with you guys in wondering what to go for. Something around 5.5 inches with an sd slot a removable battery and a solid camera are my main concerns.
Ideally I'd like a removable battery as it's amazing when I'm travelling (and I travel a lot). What would be the best alternative_A powerbank with quickcharge 2.0?

unexpected reboots/shutdowns can be due to degraded/dying battery,
freezes/lags (tried to flash from 0?) due to the EMMC is about to fail.
i'm in the same boat, but i want at least:
a 6-6.2 inch screen with minimum to no bezels,
635 CPU with 6GB (to be a substantial upgrade)
removable battery.
our note 4 fits 6.4 inch bezelless display (sacrificing home button), so it's perfectly viable.
i guess, we should wait 3 more months till S8 and other options will come out, that promise to be bezelless. Xiaomi Mi Mix did the job, now everybody wants such a phone. At the moment, i see no options to buy either.

I've got 3 different batteries including an Anker one that's only a couple of months old so I dont think it can be that.
What did you mean, flash from 0?
I'm using this Note 7 rom based on aurora 3.1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/note7-port-n910f-standm-aurora-base-t3500338/page1
Before I installed it, I flashed the latest stock rom with odin to get updated base and modems (sammobile) for 910F version.
After that Flashed twrp, did three consecutive wipes in twrp (incl data to clean internal memory) and then flashed the note 7 rom.
Did take a very long time to boot, but that's normal.
If roms don't boot, it's probably because of the bootloader or base not compatible with rom.
Used a couple of kernels, and the best one so far is the latest Xceed test build (N910FG-MM-Test-bld4k.zip) and set it on conservative for food battery.
Absolutely love the rom, no problems at all for me. Makes the note 4 look up to date again.

Ah I posted in the wrong thread
Welcome on board. Have the same problem. My contract ends now and I've completely no idea where to go now. List of phones which I could get isn't too great. Huawei P9, Samsung S7, HTC 10 or Sony X. Naah. In the end I will probably just buy something but still it's hard to find for me a decent replacement for Note 4. Thought about Pixel but a quick look at the price tag and bam we are far,far away.
On another hand, LG looks interesting. G5 or V20. Especially the G5 with add-ons capability, but I'm not sure would it be an upgrade or just simple change.

I did spend like whole Sunday looking at different phones, Youtube vids, reviews etc. but still don't see anything claiming the top spot to replace Note. In the end I did just order new battery and Ill just wait till 2017 to see what will show up.
A perfect replacement for a Note 4 is a Note 4S, better spec with a decent fingerprint scanner, LOL if only Samsung thought of that. You guys should wait till after CES 2017, it's in February (CMIIW) there should be new phones out afterwards. The only worthy replacement thus far is either the S7 Edge or V20 IMHO.
This rumoured smaller Mi mix looks interesting. Next year will be the year they perfect screen to body ratio! http://m.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_mix_nano-8439.php

Thought about that this morning...being a huge LG fan in the past, I have to say I'm quite disappointed with the G5.
V20 is a beast I've heard but don't know if the G5 would be that big a leap from your Note 4.
I'd probably say the Oneplus 3T or hold out for S8 Edge

Thats true. For me personally Note 4 is so well made and tailored that I would be happy to stay with it forever. Ticks all the boxes, and thats the problem for me.
Lg G5 is nice but lacks something to convince to change. V20 on another hand is tempting. I really like the idea with second wide angle lens. If nothing jumps till march I will give Lg a go.

don't forget about the EMMC time bomb, and it's low performance (read/write speed).
also, it could be time to upgrade to a faster, more efficient chipset with a modem of a higher LTE Category, and more bands.

Mine just started showing the EMMC issue's. No luck at the end of year. The only option for me is S7. The best choice from what I can get from my provider, not much too choose from.

Looking into buying this phone, but wanted actual owners inputs

I'm looking into getting this phone, but wanted actual owners inputs on the phone.
I bought a g5 plus on black friday at bestbuy, and used it for about a week and a half. I has issues with calls were cutting out, as if I had dropped call, but if I waited long enough, the call would resume fine, but the other side could not here me and eventually hung up without waiting long enough. This is a known issue on lenovo forums, as others have the same issue with the g5 plus.
I'd like people with say a month or better to chime in on this if you would.
I've watched numerous videos on the 5s plus and read thru countless reviews on it as well, and the biggest complaint seems to be with the camera and the depth feature, both of which have terrible lag time and wait time.
I've also sifted thru lenova forums to see if there are any issues, and the only other issue that I would call major is the screen cracked when it was not dropped or anything, was due to an alarm, although I'm not sure how that would happen.
That being said, has anyone encountered any issue, that I would call deal breakers, like voice calls, wifi dopping, slow hotspot or cell data, etc....
I'm not an avid big user of the camera, so I'm what you'd call a casual point-n-shoot person, so the camera is a low priority on my list when it comes to phones, as I don't do much with selfies or picture taking.
What I do want in a phone is good working voice and data, hotspot, and fingerprint scanner. I could even get past a buggy or glitchy fingerprint scanner even.
I've had some really bad bad bad experiences with phones as of late. I bought that g5 plus and had the voice call issues, which was not a carrier thing it was the phone, as my nexus 5x and oneplus 3 do not suffer from it. Now I have a oneplus 3, and although I love the phone, but it seems that I cannot upgrade my os at all, past 7.1.1, due to I get drastically slow data speeds. I won't go into a lot of detail on that, just in short anything past 7.1.1 android it happens, data speeds get cut near in 1/2. I'm in contact with 1+ and hope dearly that they can find a fix to this, but I am still shopping as I don't hold much stock in they will actually find a fix and more sluff it off, especially given they no longer support the phone at all.
My poor nexus 5x is suffering from bad battery life, more-so than before , and has some slow downs now, and stuttering at some points. I'm guessing it's on it's way out, this is why I was shopping for another phone and I got the 5 plus, but had issues, and now this oneplus 3 issue.
So as for looking and researching, it seems like the g5s plus doesn't suffer from the issues the g5 plus has, so it seems like it would be a good choice.
So I'm hoping those who actually have the phone and use it on a daily basis can chime in and tell me what the pros and cons are, what you like and/or don't like, aside from the obvious camera issues.
Thanks for any input that might help me with my choice.
I never faced any issue with Fingerprint, call, Wi-Fi. The only issue that's particularly bothering me is that most call recorder apps don't work (except Boldbeast recorder which is doing fine as of now).
My phone fell from 6 feet height once and landed flat on the screen. I thought it'd have shattered by some miracle (or the chinese tampered glass), even the protector didn't get any scratch except like 3 mm of it got chipped off one of its corners.
So, it's quite a sturdy one. Moreover, the camera quality has been improved significantly after the updates. Now, there's almost 0 shutter lag clicking the normal pics and almost half a second to 1 second lag to click in Depth mode or HDR mode.
However, I still think one plus3 is still a much better option than this one. You may also have a look at Xiaomi A1.
For the money, it's a great device. Had it for 3 months, used on gsm (att) and cdma (Verizon) no issues with calls. Since camera isn't am issue for ya, I'll say it takes pictures, certainly not the best pictures, but it works - but what would ya expect for a $300 or less phone. Low light is where it really struggles (as expected). Rom development isn't the greatest, is a relatively new device, hoping that gets better but what is available is good enough for daily drivers at least. And custom roms are 64 bit, not 32 like stock which does give a noticeable performance bump. Battery life is great - better than my 6p when it was new, and better than my n5 when it was new. Games, if that's your thing, run fine. I tried some racing sims for fun and no problems (I was actually impressed by how they ran). The all metal construction feels solid, really solid. I've never used a case or screen protector (it lives in my back pocket), dropped it from about 4 feet one day on to a hard tile floor, not a mark in it. I'll also say the finger print gestures are great. No need for the nav bar, which makes the screen almost the exact same size as the 6p (at my age bigger is definitely better!). The sd625 has enough power to run everything smoothly, with the benefit of being very power efficient. Ruining 64 bit os, performance is almost as good as my 6p (before the big cores died) - sorting and adding formula to a spreadsheet with 100k to 150k rows takes a few seconds, but barely longer than the fully working 6p.
This is a good bang for your buck device. I'd recommend it, and have to a few people who are getting it now.
It has its Pros and Cons, but it's really the first Android device I've had that I haven't immediately thought about my next phone. It's fast enough, smoother than my wife's iphone 7 at least..Everything is a little better than average except camera performance. Camera is "meh" as others have pointed out, and there have been times where I was frustrated trying to take decent photos over the holidays.
*Really wish it had NFC for Android Pay
*If you can afford it, get the 4GB RAM version. Using the camera causes most apps to close out of memory for some reason on my 3GB model. Sent bug requests and they say it is due to RAM management.
In the $200-$300 price range, I think it's either this phone or the Honor 7x. Honor has a better Camera, but has EMUI
Thanks for he input.
On looking more, it seems moto released a patch that fixes the camera issues now, so that's a good thing. The video I saw with the new update and depth setting was a HUGE inccrease in speed now....almost instant now compared to 2-3 seconds or better.
So far I can't seem to find much negative about this phone, perhaps because its still new, not sure.

Looking on Swappa.com, I was seeing OnePlus 3T's in the $300-$350 range, which if you ask me, looks like a better phone...Not as "new", but Snapdragon 821, 6 GB of RAM, I think they're already on Oreo too...
Coming from the oneplus 3 and having slow data issues, and this is not just a little, this is at least 1/2.....24Mbps before the update to Oreo, down to 8-10Mbps after. That unexceptible in any terms. I've been in contact with 1+ and after 5 emails, still no fix in sight.
I don't feel like repeating the same thing all over.
This data issue is rampant on the one plus 3. Do a search on "oneplus 3 slow speed after android update". Tons of people having the issue. This has haunted these phones since 2016.
Not everyone has it, some do, but I'm not willing to take that chance again.
Update:
Did some testing on my hotspot today on the 1+3, so I wanna ask, is anyone here with a g5s plus, using tmobile service and hotspot? can you test your hotspot speeds and let me know what you get.
I have a suspicion tmobile is limiting non-branded tmobile phones ie: a phone that's unlocked, and not bought from tmobile store or tmobile.
Both my 5x and 1+3 have the issues of slow hotspot, but when I went to a tmobile store today, inserted my sim card in a tmobile branded phone and tested hotspot on my 5x and 1+3, I got good speeds, 24-50Mbps, but when I put the sim in the 5x or the 1+3, both suffer from bad slow hotspot speeds 1-3Mbps, while cell data on the phone is fine.
If they are indeed blocking or limiting non-tmobile branded phones, then even the g5s plus will suffer from slow hotspot as well.
Last update:
I finally did some more tesitng today, and found that the 1+3 has what I think is hardware issues with hotdpot. I placed my sim into my 5x phone and now things are fine, so it's not a tmobile issues or blocking non tmobile phones, as my 5x is still non tmobile, but it works fine.
I'm going to chalk it up as the 1+3 has bad hardware or flawed hardware of some sort that affects bad hotspot.
I'm going to order the g5s Plus this coming friday so I am looking forward to getting this phone.
" the screen cracked when it was not dropped or anything, was due to an alarm, although I'm not sure how that would happen."
Lol. It wouldn't. I read that a lot about the xperia z3 too. People drop phones and struggle to admit "i was clumsy and dropped my glass phone and it cracked".
I have the g5s plus and it's great. The camera isn't very good, and sometimes apps crash, usually at the point they're loaded/switched back to, and sometimes an app I'm not using will tell me it's crashed but other than that it's very stable. I've had no random reboots. Battery life is great. I had the z3 before for about 3 years and the screen just failed while I was holding it. I just can't be bothered with expensive phones any more so I got the g5s plus expecting it to be a step down from the z3 but it is better in every respect except for the camera (awesome on the z3, average on the g5s plus) and the magnetic charger (z3 has, g5s plus has the old fashioned usb only and i'm always worried it's going to die one day). If I lost this phone I'd buy another one to replace it without thinking about it. I considered the oneplus 5 initially but it's twice as expensive and the camera isn't very good on that one either so i wasn't sure where the extra £250 I'd need to pay would be going (I paid £260 in the uk for my g5s plus).
I'm not expecting moto to rush out oreo, however. I get the feeling they're even slower than samsung for updates.

My own opinion, coming from a Note 4..... Camera isnt good. Other than that, this is a spectacular phone, running rooted stock only. Catch it on sale and cant beat it.
Use it as my work phone, great battery life and very smooth. Here in the UK I can't get volte or WiFi calling which is a little annoying.. Motorola don't release updates like they used to either, they are much slower.
That's not too say is a bad phone though, I really like it.
Phone is really good for a normal user. I'm using this for more than a week now. It works well. I get 2 days battery backup. This is the best phone available at this price for the hardware specification.
My 2 cents , is this I had a Nexus 6 p and then an Essential , the Nexus was great but it had a terrible battery issue, the screen wasnt very good, i actually had two of them the first one died within a week, then aftrr 2 years i got the Essential , what a beautiful phone , very elegant, barely drop it , crack, still nice, but there is a terrible camera. The calks dropped because the cellular software and radio is messed up , the side screen s have touch issues , theres a lot of little things
The G5S+ , i bought because it was rated high for midlevel phone and to be quite honest , its lightbthan both previous phones, better call quality , vetter battery life, this phone wont be any other phone on any test , but it will always rate in the middle of the pack, it has not let me down at all, feels good in the hand , great touch , everything about it is mediocre , but thats ok, because it rocks, its my go to daily driver , it was sim unlocked when i bought it, bl unlocked after 5 minutes adb , havent rooted or twrped it yet , nit enough time, but its worth the money

Got a few questions about the phone - Current Turbo user - EDIT for Turbo/VZW users

Update: My post over in the turbo thread. My opinion for Turbo users to this phone.
OP:
Hello everyone.
As the title says I'm looking for a new phone and I currently have a Turbo. Its over 3 years old and just not quite cutting it anymore (I have flashed roms etc and it just doesn't run the same anymore period). Was looking at the Pixel 2 XL but its a bit too big for me.
Are there any ex turbo users here to came to this phone? I'm looking at this one mainly because 1) decent CPU 2) Good amount of ram (Would be getting the 5gS Plus with 64GB Stoage) 3) AND ROOT!
I'm not too worried about the camera as my wife is the picture taker with her Pixel XL. I just have Work pics of cabling and jobs etc. Not worried about the down size in screen res either. I mainly use my phone for work, and a few games here and there, facebook, etc. So below are just a few questions since I can't walk into a store and play with the phone.
Edit: I'm not a huge custom ROM fan. I have always reverted back to Stock almost every time with my Turbo and Razr HD. Don't use all the fancy extra addon apps. Just a root hider if it still works on here or not for my Pokemon Go really lol but honestly, i haven't even touched that. Mainly use root just for 3 things. 1) Backup Backup backup 2) Reboot app as Turbo doesn't have a Reboot in the menu 3) Since I do IT work and connect to every single one of my clients wifi i have a wifi password app to show me the passwords if i need them.
1) Does it support VoLTE on Verizon?
2) Does it have the IR sensors so that a wave of the hand could be used to wake on screen, see notifications, silence calls/alarms like all the flashship phones from moto since the turbo.
3) Does it have the Chop and Twist to turn on Flash Light/Camera app?
4) How are the speakers for video?
And I think that is it.
Any input would be great.
Thanks!

1. While I don't have a Verizon SIM to test, VoLTE works on T-Mobile USA and based on the IMS configurations on the device, I believe it should work on Verizon. May be worth calling and asking Motorola directly.
2. All phones now have at least 1 IR sensor on the front for facial detection, it's located at the top of the phone just right of the front facing camera. This phone does NOT have the 4x sensors older moto phones had for better detection. It also has a basic version of "Moto Display" for displaying notifications while the phone is at rest, and I don't think you can customize how it's triggered (aka wave over the phone).
3. Yes, it has those features available, as well as using the fingerprint sensor for navigation, and flip to silence just to name a few.
4. It has a single bottom firing speaker which is OK, but by no means impressive for quality of volume.

Just to add
Volte is working, on stock and 1 rom I know of reliably - pixel experience (which is basically stock - don't bother with other roms). I'm using it through straight talk and no problems.
Stock camera works, that's about all you can say about it. Shouldn't be a problem for your usage.
I hear magisk works, if ya get the right version. That's all I can say as I only use su and don't have a need to pass safety net (no problems - stock and custom).
All in all, for the money, it's a decent device, and you wouldn't notice the drop in screen res (1080p is way more than enough for a small screen).
Coming from a 6p (after the big cores died) I've been very happy with it in the 3+ months I've had it.

Yea I may shoot them an email. It just sucks because all their good high end stuff either is Verizon Exclusive which means its going to be locked down tighter than fort knox, or doesn't support Verizon at all. This one, and the X4 seem to be the top two contenders. I want to stay Moto. for the most part it sounds like this phone would work for my uses even though the big reason of hanging on the Turbo is the 4 IR sensors for the whole wave thing and what not (honestly I just do it to check the time and nothing else really XD so I could live without it). There were some turn offs for the X4 though, mainly how it is more of a amazon phone and I don't care for alexia and bootloader is still locked. This ones seems to be the best for tinkerers who want to stay on Verizon honestly. I have another 32GB Turbo but I have tired to use it and it just doesnt work as good as my 64GB.
So next question would be battery life? I mean my turbo is dead in less than 10 hours now so anything better than that is good haha

I mean, this really varies on your usage, and the apps you run. With that said, my G5S Plus when used as my daily driver has no issues making it from 7am til 11pm with some juice left on the stock firmware, without root.

Fwiw - I haven't had a device that got this much sot (my usage has been very consistent over the years). But, as already mentioned, battery life is all about usage. This time of year I'm using it 8-10 hrs a day. Mostly surfing, light gaming, some music - haven't been below 25+% battery left yet.
Thanks guys
Yea i mean I went from easily the whole day (or at least 14 hours off the charger on a "normal" day meaning me not using my phone to remotely look at the camera's I am installing to set them up right lol) to maybe from off the charger at 5am to like noon is 25% now. Thank goodness for Quick Chargers at least.
Well I went ahead and bought the phone from Moto. I figure i got 14 days to test drive it and if I don't like it I'll just say I had issues using it with Verizon lol either way I have yet to be let down by Moto yet I have not had one since the Lenovo take over. I will live without root for the time being (Just load my apps and not restore them in Titanium Backup) and just see how things go.
Like I said i'm a stock kinda guy. Only apps that i really have running all the time is Nova launcher, Drive Sync, Text/Call backups, BlueTooth, but I'm sure it will run way better than my existing phone. Even if the battery isn't as great at the turbo when i first got it if it last me all day i'll be happy.
