This is a theory I have that TMobile is the cause, but I'm not 100% sure yet, but pretty positive it is TMobile causing the issue.
Phone: Moto g5s plus, xt1806 US variant.
Issue:
Of the 4 most popular roms that are 8.1 Android, AOSP extended, Pixel Experience, Lineage os 15.1, and Resurrection Remix, all of these roms work well on this phone except for one thing, hotspot/ tethering. I enable hotspot on my phone, connect with my laptop, and it connects, but has no internet.
I am not over on my data, I have adjusted APN settings, build.Prop settings, multiple things to get this to work, and still have no resolve.
Today I was remembering about a site I cannot get to using TMobile service at all, but I can use wifi at another place as well as Sprint cell service, att cell service, and connect to the site just fine, everything but TMobile service works. I've confirmed this by asking others on different providers to get to the site and they can connect just fine. My daughter also has tmobile service so I had her check the site and she cannot reach the site either.
The site is Omni rom download. Google it and it should be the first hit on the search. The site times out on anything TMobile. I have done more testing using ping and tracert and both result in "cannot find the IP or server domain" of any sort. Again I can get to it in Sprint or att just fine, as well as a wifi.
Fast forward to today and the 8.1 Android roms and hotspot, my guess is that tmobile is the cause.
Again I've done some asking and digging, and found two people with this exact same phone, but one is on Verizon, one is on att, and both have working hotspot without any issues. So again this got me thinking, can this be a similar thing as the Omni rom site issue? I'm going to bet yes. So without having another sim to use from another provider like sprint network or Verizon network, I have a request.
Can people with this phone, on a tmobile network test these two things for me to confirm it is indeed TMobile and not something else?
1: test the Omni rom download site, on lte data, not on wifi please, because it will result in you can connect, use lte only please
2: anyone running these roms and is on T-Mobile service, test hotspot to see if it works.
I greatly appreciate any feedback on the testing so I can confirm if my theory is correct or not. I'm betting it is correct.
As a side note, same tmobile and my 1+3 also suffers from the same issues. That's 2 totally different phones, but the same network provider. To me this so points to the carrier as the key thing in all instances, phones, sites and hotspot, yet other carriers have no issues.

What's happening man!
You may remember me from another "world" lol
In that world I believe I mentioned an app - dns changer.
One way an isp can control site access is via dns. I don't know for sure if T-Mobile uses this tactic, but it wouldn't surprise me if it did. In that case, running through a different dns may get access to that site.
I doubt it would help the hotspot issue, but who knows. Only takes a minute to try.
Oh - if ya do try - go into settings in the app and make sure it's set for all connections and ipv6. You'll see it

Cool cool I'll give it a try.
The only thing on all this that is the common denominator, is tmobile. Other things aside from tmobile work, same hardware, same os/rom, and it works for them on different providers. I haven't yet tested for Hotspot with other carriers though. May end up doing what I did before to test that site and go to the stores and barrow a sim. Only issue is, in the case of metro pcs the sim is tied to the emie so if that's the case that won't work. With T-Mobile, they don't tie the emie to the sim card so you can swap out cards to multiple different phones without any issues.
Update:
Tried the dns app still times out
Update 2:
I just confirmed my theory. It's carrier related. I switched over to att and hotspot works fine. I can also get to that Omni site I could not before.
I also have the XT1806 US model. I have tried many mods without luck. I feel this is a dns issue because I can get other phones to tether on the same $50 network plan. If anyone is on T-mobile (Metro PCS) and has 50$ plan tethering please let us know your settings and how you enabled unencrypted hotspot.

As an observation, I noticed that the omni download site is https, which means secure/encrypted. I'm thinking TMobile has some wonky setting that causes some https sites not to load and time out. I'm also thinking this is a similar issue if why hotspot isn't working on any phone I have. If it was 1 rom or 1 device, I'd have my suspicions of it being one of those, but it's on 2 different phones, and 4 different roms. The odds of that are pretty huge, this is what makes new think it's a carrier side as apposed to something else, especially since on another carrier now both work just fine without issues on all phones and roms. Also other carriers such as sprint and vz.
The one and only common denominator here is carrier which is TMobile, which is the same. Everything else in there picture is totally different. I've tested mine on T-Mobile and also my daughter's, that's 2, and from what I can tell A-bolt is also on T-Mobile network. That being the case, that's 3 out of 3 that have the issue, on T-Mobile network. That's pretty high odds that it's something other than a carrier issue.
All in all that's 4 phones that have the issue. At least one is on stock (my daughter's) so this happens on all varieties of roms be they stock or custom

Went through a few device downloads. All good.
T-Mobile, data, 4G/LTE.
Only extra thing running on ROM is DNS66 for adblocking.

So i am having issue. I bought a Moto X 2014 and it is clean in terms of imei. Both t-mobile says its clean and at&t says its clean. It is a AT&T variant XT1097 and like i said it is clean in terms of imei. weirdly enough T-mobile wont be picked up on the service, but AT&T will? it basically says
No Service
selected network (T-mobile) unavailable
and when i do try to select a network it says
"cant connect to network right try again later"
has anyone else have this issue with the AT&T moto trying to use it on at&t? and found a solution? if there is any solution ill take it i need all the help i can get lol
i tried reseting it, factory reseting, airplane mode, etc literally almost everything else.
Sorry.....I have similar issue..Did you find the solution? If yes could you share the info for it.

Add the T-Mobile APN.
it's discussed on the ATT thread, basically it's an issue with the lollipop radio used on our update, "fix" is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/general/att-xt1097-lollipop-discussion-t2951294/page36
Add the APN (as mentioned above)
Download the 4G/LTE switcher app
select WCDMA preferred as network, only HSDPA speeds but it's better than no service ^_^
I had this similar issue and it was driving me absolutely insane, the connection would be weak then it would just disconnect me altogether and then zero service. Most of the time if I were to get a call the radio would switch to HSPAP like normal then after the call it would fail to switch back to LTE then it would just completely drop connection. This is on an unlocked AT&T XT1097 running on the unlimited MetroPCS (T-Mobile) mind you.
Since February 2015 I've been dealing with this bug by using LTE switch to get by, but this got so tedious and it just irked me that I had to go thru all this crap because of poor development. This is a pretty huge bug that should've never been there to begin with. Seriously, how dare you mess with my service Google?
Anyways what I did to fix this completely was just purchase MoFoRoot for $20 (fully worth BTW) and flash the 4.4.4 AT&T modem and now I have zero issues. I used to not connect to the network on a reboot but since flashing the modem I am now able to connect and stay connected without any hassle. The connection is now solid and I can't be happier with this phone. Currently on stock 5.0.2 non-rooted with 4.4.4 modem and zero problems, now I don't need to get another phone.
Using the fast.metropcs.com APN as the T-Mobile APN doesn't allow me to connect. I have solid LTE and HSPA/HSPAP service with it and can't be happier... I take that back, I'd be happier with better indoor coverage.
Thank you makers of MoFoRoot for your lifesaver app, I am happy to have supported your fine work.
Using my N6 on Verizon, I frequently get messages that I have left my home and dont have data roaming enabled. I don't understand because my note 3 had no problem with Verizon. If I turn on data roaming for data might incur charges from some other provider? On the status bar it used to say either T-CDMA or Verizon Wireless, now it says 3100. My SIM is the same one I used in the note 3. If it matters I am using Liquid Smooth ROM and Franco r2 kernel. Voice seems to work. Any suggestions are welcome.
I'm having the same problem. I have to keep going back to stock to get LTE. I've tried liquid smooth, validus, and bliss pop and all gave me roaming and no LTE. All are their latest builds too. I've also tried popping in and out the sim card with reboots as well.

That is exactly what I am seeing. I'm on WiFi 99% of the time but when I leave the house I have no data.
Good ole Verizon making it impossible to do anything without them approving first. Its probably because Verizon doesn't want people to use the phone on their network before they release it.
They've never been good about nexus though. If you don't recall the whole galaxy nexus debacle
I had the galaxy nexus on Verizon but don't recall them interfering. I do hope that once they offer the 6 that our network access is unfettered, or the community will figure out how to make it work with custom ROMs.

Your roaming goes away? I can't run any ROM without roaming on Verizon...
I noticed this issue on CM based ROMs. Any that are stock based are not effected by this bug, for me at least. I have spent a couple of hours trying different things out that people suggest but none of them have worked. I was able to get 3G to work on liquid, but no LTE. and it reverted after a reboot. I sure hope someone can get this fixed soon.
im running cm12 on my n6 and using verizon and it works perfectly. No issues.
on Bliss Pop the Status Bar icon is NOT roaming but if you pull down and check the tiles it says roaming. I dont think its actually roaming though...LTE Discovery tells me I am still LTE and so does Network Signal Info.
So I think its just in the UI.

Well, I cant swear to it for sure, but I from the apps I have I am still attached to the same cell tower, so not sure how that would equate to roaming.
LTE Discovery also shows as roaming, but all the other info also shows LTE. Same for Network Signal Info.
IANAL , but if your attached to your normal home cell towers, it would be hard for us to be roaming I would think....and hope
It may have to do with LTE vs 3G. When not on LTE it says 3100 (or 31000?) and that bus when I am "roaming". So confusing. I've gone back to stock rather than Liquid Smooth. I will try an AOSP ROM like Pure to see what happens. Although I'm not missing much on stock.

HTH, but remember I added the caveats, caveat emptor
Any update?
I have same kind of problem too. Im afraid the bill will goes up by this.
Please let us know if there is a fix for this
Yeah same problem... I don't get why some Verizon users agent having the same problem. Would unrooting and doing a factory reset maybe fix the problem? Frustrated that I can't run a custom ROM without roaming...
Go take a look at your bill/usage online and see if things are showing as roaming. like I said mine looked fine. And it seems like an issue with quite a few roms from understanding.

I just tried out Broken and it has working LTE on Verizon! I'll have to look at my bill, haven't been on a custom ROM with roaming in effect for very long though, so I probably wouldn't be able to tell very easily.
I have a Stock Rooted, Unencrypted N6, with a few custom Tweaks. On VZW have not had ANY issues whatsoever with my service or LTE. Perhaps some custom ROM/Kernels might be causing these issues?
Stock seems to not have the issue. It is said herein that AOSP based ROMs don't either but that is not true in my ecperience. LTE Discovery says 31000 is Verizon Wireless so I believe that even though it thinks it is, it isn't roaming from VZW. I enabled data roaming and switched back to Liquid Smooth and I should be alright. Thanks to everyone for the insights.

Problem: WiFi calling not working.
I'm currently overseas in the uae right now and will be year for a whole year. I've tried getting my WiFi calling to work on both LP and MM but no luck. I've tried fresh installs, airplane mode toggle, WiFi tether toggle, WiFi toggle and nothing seems to work.
After I finished setting this aosip 6.0 ROM today, I looked at my quick settings and it showed T-Mobile WiFi calling but immediately after that, I had to reboot the device for a layers theme install. After reboot the WiFi calling was gone. I've tried everything I know possible to get it back but no luck.
Anyone ever experience this or can anyone possibly help me out because T-Mobile has already started hitting me for roaming charges.
Please and thank you
My current ROM
wifi calling doesnt matter about your rom, its about your provider. if your provider does not provide wifi calling(like tmobiles wifi calling), then wifi calling will never work.
It's T-Mobile. And I've check with multiple reps who told me that it's active on my account

cool, i had no idea.. now i know
try using google voice instead, I know its boot what you asked about but it's what I used and it has nothing to do with the Rom, it's standalone app
I use T-Mobile Wifi calling in Europe back to the US without issue, but I set it up while still in the US.
Since T-Mobile has a *very* nice international roaming data scheme, I suggest you use Google Voice/Hangouts to avoid incurring roaming charges until you get this fixed,
Hi all,
I'm currently running LineageOS 16.0 on my OnePlus 3T on the Three UK network and was wondering if anyone out there has managed to get native WiFi calling working in a setup like this?
I get zero mobile reception at my work so for over a year now have been using the Three inTouch WiFi calling app which has been pretty good, however last week I received a message saying that due to upcoming network upgrades Three will be retiring the app in a month or two so I now would like to be able to use Android's native WiFi calling if this is at all possible.
Three's website says that WiFi calling is only supported on Android on handsets purchased from them on contract, however I'm a SIM-only customer. I've got the latest OxygenOS modem firmware etc. installed as far as I'm aware, so was wondering if any of you clever people here on XDA have managed to find any unofficial ways of getting the native WiFi calling working for any old network?

Wifi calling is working out of the box for me. VoLTE too*. (LOS+3+SIM only+OP3/T) Been working with that setup since the beginning of LOS16.
*With 3 you'll only connect to VoLTE when 3G is unavailable as they prioritise in that order. For some reason they don't like people to use 'Super Voice', even though they advertise it as a feature. There's a big thread on the Digital Spy forum covering 3 and 4G in the UK that you might find useful.
Edit: Try the field test number. Enter *#*#4636#*#* in the Dialer. Is Wifi Calling 'Provisioned'. See my own screenshot:
On my stock op3t there is no WiFi calling toggle to switch on. That probably explains why I don't have it despite being able to switch it on under enhanced communications under sim settings.
Is there a way to activate it? The volte calling I got by doing a code thing.

Yes the "Wi-Fi Calling provisioned" toggle is on.
I've just upgraded to the latest LOS 16.0 nightly (2019-05-02) but still no sign of the native Wi-Fi calling working.
You said you've had it working since the start of LOS 16.0. I upgraded to 16.0 over-the-top directly from 15.1, do you think that could have anything to do with it?
Are there any settings in the SIM itself which could be needed to enable Wi-Fi calling? I think my SIM is a good 3 years old or so, would swapping it for a newer one be any use do you think?

OcUK. User name looks familiar.
We're having this conversation in multiple threads.
VoWifi does NOT work, despite any previous assertions to the contrary. As i mentioned, it was flawed testing methodology.
VoLTE does work, but with Three network restrictions. i.e only when there is no normal 4G (1800Mhz) or 3G available. VoLTE is only carried on the 800Mhz band, which is prioritised lowest.
There are two very long Three 4G threads on the Digital Spy forums. Worth reading if you want the long version of what i have stated above.
Edit: Just a suggestion. Try this app so that you can monitor what Bands you are connecting to at any given time:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wilysis.cellinfolite&hl=en
What you need for VoLTE to work is Band 20. (800Mhz)

I posted the link here as I thought it was more relevant here.
The app is telling me I have band 20 so volte should be achievable but doesn't seem to be working on lineage (worked fine on OOS 9.0.6)

To save time can you post a screenshot with the App displaying that information?
'Connected to Band 20' is what we're looking for, rather than 'is available'.

I'm guessing this is the screen you want.
I also installed VOenabler v1.7 which seems to have restored volte. I haven't seen the volte icon but I'm still at home.
Edit: I installed the module before installing the bandwidth app.
Double post..

It looks like you have Wifi turned on in those screenshots. If you turn it off you should be able to make a VoLTE call. At least it looks like you should.
So has 3G always been bad where you are? I assume you don't have 3G or normal 4G reception at all? (Bands 1 & 3)
I almost always connect to one of those two in my area, although where i am now it looks like some neighbouring towers do carry Band 20. I just need to destroy the other towers to connect to it!

It's abysmal. I'm in a Victorian basement. The only reason I went with three was the WiFi calling app.
Have left the house now for some air and now I band 1 so I'm guessing I'm connected to a different tower.

So what you're seeing is evidence of Three de-prioritising Band 20. As 800Mhz has better building penetration it's all you're getting while inside. When you step outside you begin to pick up the other Bands which you are immediately switched to, whether you lke it or not.
I only latch on to Band 20 once in a Blue Moon. The coverage of the other Bands is almost total so i don't stand a chance!
VoWifi is another matter altogether. If it could work with the 'intouch' app there must be something in the app that could be added to our ROMs natively. That's my logic anyway. (Also support is added to phones bought from Three using their official ROMs, so the same logic applies).

I thought newer phones had WiFi calling by default and didn't need to rely on the carrier.
That's a very good shout but way beyond my skills. Maybe it can be suggested?

This is the official word from Three:
http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/Three_inTouch
They say 'update' which suggests that people who bought phones on contract might have received an OTA which enabled VoWifi. How much would we love to get a copy of that OTA zip!

Poor us who bought our phones right out. I wonder if this is the case for newer phones too.
There must be someway to get that zip!
Just got my Pixel 5 today and in reading up on it I discovered it has wi-fi calling capabilities. While this wasn't something I was actively looking for, it would be nice to have as the finished basement of our new house doesn't really get cellular signals, and even the rest of the house doesn't have the greatest cellular connection.
I do have wi-fi all throughout the house though, so if I could enable this feature it would be a bonus. I'm on Straight Talk, using the AT&T towers, and I'm just wondering if anyone has had any luck getting this feature activated with them. I've tried using their automated tool to see if the phone is capable, but it's telling me no. I don't see any options looking through the phone settings, and looking around on the ST site they don't mention the Pixel 5 in their FAQ section.
So is this phone feature only available on certain carriers? Do I need to get an updated SIM from Straight Talk (the one I'm using I've had for about 4-5 years or so)? Any help would be appreciated.
AT&T is very particular about what devices can use VoLTE and VoWIFI. i've found occasional workarounds, but for the most part you need an AT&T branded device for those features. AT&T has a running list of provisioned devices.
I'm afraid you are probably out of luck on this.
Too bad to hear this. Luckily, I've been surprised to find that I'm able to actually make and receive calls, at least in the main living area of the basement, so everything worked out okay in the end.
I can't promise you that it will work but from experience I'm pretty sure ..... If you can get customer support at ATT to provision your account for wifi calling AND put a dummy IMEI in your acct from a device that does wifi calling (one that is whitelisted by ATT) the wifi calling will work ..
I have done this many many times. The dummy IMEI had actually never been needed with pixel devices though, for me

Would that even work in my case though, since I'm not an AT&T customer? I have Straight Talk, which is using the AT&T bands/towers, but I'm not technically with AT&T.

Not sure if calling Straight talk sand using an IMEI from a phone that normally does wifi calling with ATT would work or not. Go to an att and copy the IMEI of a demo phone then call straight talk and switch to that phone

I may have to try that if it really starts becoming a problem. Surprisingly, as I mentioned above, I can actually make and receive calls in the main part of the basement. Maybe because it is the house above us, and not mostly the garage/solid cement like in the other portion where I was having trouble before, I'm not sure. It's pretty much just storage rooms in that section of the basement anyway, although that is where the internet comes in and the modem is located (the house is fully wired for internet, so I have a switch that feeds out from the basement to go throughout the house). Only time it would really become a concern is if I have to be on the phone with our internet provider while simultaneously working on the router or modem. Barring that, the phone seems to work fine throughout the majority of the basement, which wasn't what I was expecting.
